The Botswana-headquartered Choppies chain entered the Zimbabwean market in 2013 by acquiring several Spar shops and expanding its presence in 2014 with a distribution centre in the country.
Choppies operated 30 grocery stores nationwide under its subsidiary, Nanavac (Pty) Ltd, trading as Choppies Zimbabwe. However, the retailer recently exited the Zimbabwean market, citing a strategic decision to focus on sustainable growth and profitability across its regional operations.
In an interview with the Chronicle, Modi, who is also the Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce, said that all former Choppies outlets have been restocked and are now part of the Sai Mart chain. He said:

We acquired all the Choppies outlets, not only in Bulawayo but nationwide. We bought everything from Choppies and retained all the workers, about 1 100 and something.
We have already started rebranding; we began with the ones in downtown and those in the suburbs. As soon as we finish here in Bulawayo, we will move on to Gweru, then Gokwe, Mutare and finally Harare.

Modi said that by the end of last year, Choppies had cleared its stock. He added that all the outlets have now been restocked.

Residents of New Lobengula in Bulawayo intervened to stop an armed robbery at Sai Mart on Saturday evening, throwing stones at the robbers and causing them to flee empty-handed.
The armed robbers entered the Sai Mart outlet, formerly Choppies, around 8 PM and fired shots, injuring a shop employee with a gunshot wound to the thigh. In response to the gunfire, the community confronted the armed robbers, forcing them to flee.
Emmanuel Mutoko, a resident, narrated to the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/residents-stone-armed-robbers-shop-manager-shot-mob-steps-in-to-help/">Chronicle</a> how he scaled a nearby precast wall and hid in a neighbour’s yard as bullets flew in different directions.
The robbers fired indiscriminately at the crowd of residents attempting to stop the robbery. Said Mutoko:

The shop closes at 8 PM, and as staff were leaving, there was a commotion as some men forced their way inside. One of them, who seemed to be watching the place from outside, started shooting randomly.
Residents gathered around the shop and began throwing stones, and he fired a few more shots. I jumped over a perimeter wall and hid next door because I was scared of being hit by a stray bullet.

Mutoko said the robbers exploited a malfunctioning tower light to escape into the darkness after realising the residents were determined to stop them. He added:

It all happened within a few minutes, and then the robbers were gone. No one chased them. That’s when we heard that the manager had been shot inside the shop.

The acting spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, confirmed the incident. She said:

Police in Bulawayo are investigating a case of attempted robbery and attempted murder that occurred on February 1, 2025, in New Lobengula, Bulawayo.
At approximately 8:10 PM, a brazen attempted robbery and attempted murder occurred at Choppies (now Sai Mart), where a 59-year-old male complainant, a resident of Cowdray Park, sustained serious injuries.
The complainant (the shop manager) was reconciling invoices in his office while the rest of the staff were clocking out.
As the complainant was about to open the door for the staff to leave, three suspects emerged from their hiding place near the shop.
The first suspect fired a single shot, causing some workers to scatter and others to seek refuge at the back of the shop.
The second suspect fired two shots from the exit door, attempting to intimidate the crowd of onlookers.

One of the suspects forced the manager into the strong room and demanded that he open the safe.
When the manager said he didn’t have the keys, the suspect shot him in both thighs. Said Msebele:

As more people joined the crowd outside the shop and began pelting the suspects with stones, the armed robbers panicked and abandoned their attempt to rob the store. They left the scene empty-handed.
</blockquote>
She urged anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact their nearest police station.
Msebele also encouraged business owners to hire security guards from reputable companies to protect their employees and property from criminal activity.

The takeover of Choppies Zimbabwe outlets by Modi followed Choppies Enterprises Limited’s announcement to exit the Zimbabwean market.
When Choppies announced its plans to sell its Zimbabwean operations on November 29, 2024, it had 30 grocery stores nationwide under its subsidiary, Nanavac (Pty) Ltd, trading as Choppies Zimbabwe4.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Mphoko, who Mphoko, has been involved in legal disputes with Choppies over shareholding issues, claimed that the retail chain collapsed after he left in 2019. He said:

You can try and re-write Choppies history in Zimbabwe. You can never take away what I did at Choppies even if you tried. Modi sold his assets to us in 2013. We took over his very unprofitable shops. Grew them to 35 in 4 years. I left in 2019. It failed to hold, it collapsed.

A security guard at Choppies Supermarket in Bulawayo’s New Luveve suburb narrowly escaped death after armed robbers fired at him and missed.
The robbers then attacked other employees, stabbing one security guard four times and injuring the manager with a blow to the head.
After overpowering the staff, the robbers forced the manager to open the main entrance, escaping on foot with US$1,000 in cash.
According to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/choppies-supermarket-robbed-of-us1-000/">The Herald</a>, the incident occurred just after 8 PM, shortly after the supermarket had closed for the evening.
Staff were preparing to leave, and security personnel were conducting their routine checks.
A female vendor, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Chronicle that they initially dismissed the sound of gunfire as celebratory fireworks, only to realise with unfolding horror that a robbery was underway. She said:

It was just after 8 pm when we heard the shots, which we thought were firecrackers. We even chided the person, telling them not to do that near us. Moments later, we realised in horror that it was actually a gunshot, and we ran for our lives.

A supermarket worker said that the robbers fired three shots. The first shot was aimed at a security guard conducting his routine end-of-day checks behind the building. Fortunately, the shot missed, causing the guard to flee in panic. He said:

When the shot was fired, one of the robbers manhandled the cashier, fired two shots in the air, and demanded to know where the manager was.
In shock, the cashier told them the manager was at the back. In a flash, the manager had a gun pointed at his head and was ordered to open the shop.
The manager sustained severe head injuries, while one of the security guards suffered multiple stab wounds — three to the leg and one to the arm.

According to the worker, after collecting the day’s takings, the robbers walked on foot towards Cowdray Park.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the robbery, saying investigations are ongoing to determine the number of suspects involved and whether they used a vehicle during the robbery. He said:

The robbery occurred last night (Saturday) when the supermarket was closing. The security personnel were preparing for closure when they heard shots being fired.
The suspects then forced the manager to open the front entrance, took some cellphones from employees and US$1 000 from the supermarket, and fled.

Commissioner Nyathi urged supermarket owners and managers to boost security measures, particularly during closing hours, to deter and prevent similar incidents. He said:

Accordingly, shareholders are advised to exercise caution when trading in their Choppies shares until a further announcement is made.

Botswana retailer Choppies Enterprise Limited is considering withdrawing from Zimbabwe due to challenges faced by its local subsidiary, which has impacted the group’s financial performance.
These challenges are attributed to the instability of the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency, introduced in April to replace the Zimbabwe dollar as the official domestic currency.
Choppies holds a 100% stake in the local company Nanavac Investments (Pvt) Limited, which operates as Choppies Zimbabwe.
In its annual report for the period ending June 30, 2024, Choppies conceded that Zimbabwe continues to be a challenging environment. It said:

Operations in Zambia remain fairly stable and should improve significantly, following the ending of the drought and El Niño conditions which affected hydroelectric generation resulting in power cuts.
Once Namibia reaches critical mass, we believe the business will be profitable. Zimbabwe, however, continues to be a challenging environment.
The new ZiG currency, which replaced the Zimbabwean dollar, has not as yet helped to stabilise the economy, and consequently, the Zimbabwean operation has experienced a decline in performance. We are evaluating our operations in the country and will address the situation.

Choppies says it has 11 388 employees (10 289 Choppies, 1 099 Kamoso) in 287 stores (185 grocery retail, 75 liquor stores, 27 hardware stores) across Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
In Zimbabwe, Choppies has 30 stores and employs 1 051 (567 male and 484 female), who could end up losing their jobs if the retailer pulls out of the country. Said Choppies chief executive officer Ramachandran Ottapathu:

The long-term focus of our strategy is to reduce debt. We have exited all loss-making areas apart from Zimbabwe which is something we are currently considering. We are also looking into expansion plans throughout the group.

Choppies Weighs Exit From Zimbabwe

Former Vice President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Phelekezela_Mphoko" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Phelekezela Mphoko</a> and his son, Siqokoqela, have dragged MDC vice president, who is their former legal representative, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Welshman_Ncube" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Welshman Ncube</a> to court for failure to transfer payment made to them in a business deal.
The Mphokos, through their lawyer Zibusiso Ncube of Ncube and Partners, on Tuesday filed summons at the Bulawayo High Court. Ncube of Mathonsi Law Chambers is cited as a defendant.
Mphoko and his son are demanding US$1.5 million from Ncube for allegedly squandering part of the US$2,9 million they got as shares from Choppies Enterprises after they were bought out of the company. Part of the summons read:
<blockquote>Prof Ncube while acting in his capacity as their attorney under a contract of mandate and having separately been contracted to do so in a written addendum to a settlement agreement signed between the plaintiffs, Choppies and him on January 11, 2019, received the money.
… wherefore, the plaintiffs pray for a judgment against the defendant to pay the sum of $832 500 to the first plaintiff (Phelekezela Mphoko) and $619 708,50 to the second plaintiff (Siqokoqela) as well as payment of five per cent interest on the amounts.</blockquote>

Emerging reports suggest that former Vice-President Phelekezela Mphoko and his son Siqokoqela misled the government into believing that their family owned 51% shares at Choppies a company headquartered in Botswana. It has emerged that the family was given only 7% shares for facilitating the company’s entry into Zimbabwe. The law demanded that 51% of the total shares of foreign companies be owned by locals.
Mphoko’s actions robbed the country transactions of about US$500 000 and upwards as per the indigenisation laws.
Choppies’ suspended chief executive Ramachandran Ottapathu was quoted saying that Mphoko and his son had not invested a cent in the operation. He said:

Former VP Mphoko Misled Govt On His Shares At Choppies

Mr. Ramachandran Ottapathu, the suspended Choppies Enterprises chief executive officer has denied any wrongdoing and has vowed to challenge his ouster in court. He was responding to the company after it criticised him in Stock Exchange News Services (Sens) announcements in Botswana and South Africa on Monday. Choppies claimed that Ottapathu’s suspension was “valid and proper” and related to a collection of activities and conduct by him.
Ottapathu was suspended last month by the retail group over accusations of financial variances. The group has said that it intends to first complete investigations which are already underway and in due course reveal to shareholders why Ottapathu was suspended. Mr. Ottapathu said:
<blockquote>This is simple character assassination, which does not give me a chance to defend myself. I was suspended without notice and without a hearing.
I deny the insinuations and allegations that I have done anything wrong. I have said repeatedly that I have not been involved in material wrongdoing or that I benefited financially from any of the transactions, which have now been under investigation since our shares were suspended almost a year ago.
I am going to challenge my suspension in court at the soonest opportunity — as I do not believe it is justified or that it was done in a manner, which was valid or proper.</blockquote>
