The Midzi family, living near the roundabout where Robert Mugabe and Kumbirai Kangai (Aerodrome) roads meet, narrowly escaped death on Wednesday when a haulage truck lost its brakes while descending the Christmas Pass slopes and crashed into their home while they slept.
According to <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/girl-5s-incredible-instincts-save-family/">The Manica Post</a>, the house was reduced to rubble in this incident, marking the 18th road accident at the property since 2007.
The family now lives in constant fear of a deadly accident, as haulage trucks with brake failures continue to descend the slopes and collide with their home.
The truck, which was transporting lithium to Mozambique, crashed into the property around 1 AM. Remarkably, the previous night, five-year-old Kierra had asked to sleep in the sitting room instead of the main bedroom so she could watch cartoons on television.
Kierra and her mother, Melania Midzi, typically sleep in the main bedroom, which was destroyed in the crash; however, both were in the sitting room at the time, resulting in no injuries.
Unfortunately, three rooms, including the main bedroom, spare bedroom, and kitchen, sustained significant damage.
In an interview with The Manica Post, Melania stated that they might not have survived had Kierra not insisted on sleeping in the sitting room. She said:

I am still traumatised and shocked. My little daughter is my angel. She insisted that we sleep in the sitting room, otherwise, both of us would have died had I not listened to her.
</blockquote>
She said the other bedroom that was destroyed is often shared by her niece, Mary, and their domestic worker, who both were away for the holidays. Said Midzi:
<blockquote>
If they had been around, we could have been talking of a different and sad story. Both travelled for the holidays and were supposed to be back on Tuesday, but they did not.
I believe it was God’s miraculous hand that stopped and spared them from this accident. Had things been different, all of us would have perished in our sleep.
I heard the truck making a lot of noise, and immediately knew it was charging towards us. All I could do was pick my little girl from her slumber.
I did not know what to do next, considering the trauma of the 17 previous accidents.

Midzi said they have been petitioning Mutare City Council since 2007 to be relocated, but nothing has materialised to date. She said:

At one time we were told that it was expensive to relocate us. We have written to them on many occasions, and it seems they want to act when someone has died first.
You can imagine the trauma that we have been enduring since 2007 when the first accident occurred. This is the 18th accident, and it’s trauma after trauma.
</blockquote>
Midzi’s nephew, Joseph Midzi, who was also under the same roof when the accident occurred, said the truck driver said the vehicle developed brake failure as it descended the steep Christmas Pass slopes. He said:

There were five people in the house, and luckily no one was hurt. The driver sustained minor injuries and was treated and discharged at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital. He has since been taken for questioning by the police.
We are appealing to the authorities to relocate us because we are not safe here. We are also appealing for foodstuffs and other incidentals because our kitchen was destroyed together with the two bedrooms.
We are also afraid that part of the house which remains might give in when the truck is removed.

The Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Misheck Mugadza, said that plans for the construction of the Christmas Pass Bypass route are well underway to help prevent accidents like the one that damaged the Midzi home.
John Misi, the Manicaland provincial director for the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, said the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) will address the family’s immediate needs.
Acting Town Clerk Blessing Chafesuka revealed that the house is now uninhabitable and called for an emergency full council meeting to discuss the best ways to assist the family.

A family in Mutare narrowly escaped death when a truck crashed into their home while they were sleeping. They have faced 18 accidents at their property since 2007. A 5-year-old girl's instincts saved her and her mother, as they decided to sleep in the sitting room that night. The family has been trying to relocate since 2007 but nothing has happened. The truck driver had minor injuries, and the family is now asking for help to rebuild their damaged home. Plans for a bypass route are underway to prevent future accidents.

5-year-old Mutare Girl's Instincts Save Family From Horrific Death

In the Toronto area of Penhalonga, located on the outskirts of Mutare, a devastating accident unfolded on Tuesday afternoon.
A speeding vehicle, allegedly driven by an intoxicated driver, struck three learners. Tragically, among the victims were the only two children of a local couple.
The incident occurred around 3 PM on Tuesday, March 12, at the 2-kilometer mark along Christmas Pass-Shamu Road.
The siblings, Silvian and Strive Maponde, and another learner, died on the spot.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the accident. Additionally, a fourth victim sustained injuries and was admitted to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital. Fortunately, he was discharged the following day.
In a statement, ZRP national spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi identified the deceased as Blessing Chasarira (nine), Silvian Maponde (13) and Strive Maponde (nine), all of Chirochangu Plot, Toronto. He said:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a road traffic accident in which three learners were killed, while another learner was injured when a Toyota Fortuner vehicle veered off the road to the left and knocked down the learners who were crossing the road at the 2km peg along Christmas Pass-Shamu Road on March 12, 2023, at around 3 PM.
The victims were identified by their next of kin as Blessing Chasarira, Silvian Maponde and Strive Maponde. The bodies of the victims were taken to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital for post-mortem, while the injured learner was admitted at the same hospital.

Acting spokesperson for the ZRP in Manicaland Province, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said the driver of the vehicle, John Dumbura, was being charged with culpable homicide.
Silvian Maponde was in Grade Six at Little St Augustine’s Primary School, while his sibling, Strive was in Grade Two at the same school. Chisarira was in Grade Two at Beaule Primary School.
According to witnesses who spoke to <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/couple-loses-all-children-in-accident/">The Manica Post</a>, the driver of the vehicle was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and driving at high speed.
It is believed that Dumbura lost control of the speeding vehicle, leading to the tragic outcome.
Gift Maponde, a resident, faced unimaginable grief as his only two children had just disembarked from a kombi and were only a few meters away from their home. He said:
<blockquote>
My children, Silvian and Strive were hit by the car and died on the spot. They are gone. They had just disembarked from a kombi on their way home.
Even though I arrived a few moments after the accident, I saw the driver; he was visibly drunk. It happened around 3 pm since I had come from where I am employed as a security guard.
This is so devastating. I cannot believe that I no longer have any children. They were all taken in the blink of an eye.
This is so difficult to comprehend and adapt to. I am in extreme pain, and whoever did this must pay for his sins.
</blockquote>
Primrose Masiiyiwa, who said she witnessed the accident unfolding, said:
<blockquote>
I was coming from fetching water and saw these kids checking both sides of the road before crossing.
Everything happened so fast and the next thing I heard was a loud crashing sound. When I rushed to check what had happened.
I realised that the kids had been knocked down by the car and were lying in a bush by the roadside.

Asst Comm Nyathi urged motorists to be alert and observe stipulated speed limits to safeguard lives and to abide by the road rules and regulations to curb road accidents.

Tragedy Strikes: Couple Loses All Children in Alcohol-Related Car Accident

Two women were shot and killed when three armed men attacked a Zimbabwean-bound bus in the Bel-Bela area in Limpopo province in South Africa on Thursday morning.
One other woman was left seriously injured following the shooting.
The bus was travelling from Pretoria to Harare when tragedy struck.
No arrests have been made yet while investigations are already underway, the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/two-killed-one-injured-as-gunmen-raid-zimbabwe-bound-bus-in-south-africa/">Chronicle</a> reported citing Limpopo police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Republic Police is urging all motorists travelling to and from Mutare to be cautious following an accident involving a truck at the peak of the Christmas Pass. In a statement seen by Pindula News, police said:

Motorists travelling from Mutare must stop at the foot of the Christmas Pass and follow police instructions to use the upper level, reduce speed and keep to the left. NO OVERTAKING is allowed. 
Motorists travelling to Mutare must use left lane ONLY to go up the Christmas Pass and follow hand signals by the police officers. NO OVERTAKING or use of right overtaking lane is being allowed as the lane is being used by traffic coming from Mutare.
 All drivers to exercise extreme caution.

Police said some officers were making efforts to clear the accident scene.
