Workers at the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/National_Railways_of_Zimbabwe">National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ)</a> have claimed that the entity’s wagons occasionally spend days parked because the parastatal has no fuel.
Investigations by <a href="https://cite.org.zw/gross-mismanagement-and-corruption-threaten-nrzs-viability%EF%BF%BC/">CITE</a> have suggested that alleged gross mismanagement and corruption of unparalleled levels at the NRZ are threatening the state entity’s viability.
NRZ is said to be generating significant income which is allegedly being misappropriated by the same at the expense of nearly 4 000 employees most of whom are poor salaries.
At its helm, NRZ has Respina Zinyanduko as the General Manager (GM) who took over the reins in January 2021 in an acting capacity following the death of acting GM Joseph Mashika. Zinyanduko, the first-ever woman to head the railway company was in December last year appointed substantive GM.
<a href="https://cite.org.zw/gross-mismanagement-and-corruption-threaten-nrzs-viability%EF%BF%BC/">CITE</a> reports that while NRZ business volumes have improved way better than in the Karakadzai and Mukwada eras, still there is nothing to show for the suffering employees owing to alleged mismanagement and bad corporate governance at the parastatal.
The situation is so bad that frustrated workers are ditching the company on a weekly basis, some without even serving any notices.
NRZ, which last bought locomotives over 30 years ago is currently leasing from South Africa’s Transnet and SheItam, something that comes at a huge cost for the entity. An employee privy to the operations at the company told CITE:
<blockquote>
The situation at NRZ is far worse than you can imagine.
The Sheltam locomotives occasionally spend days parked because the NRZ has no fuel. Same story with what’s remaining of Transnet locomotives. Taking a thorough cost over benefit analysis, fuel cost is at most 3% of the income generated hence close to negligible.
It’s actually more expensive to park a locomotive than to run it.
Fuel shortages are a result of mismanagement and misplaced priorities by the untouchables, otherwise fuel is not a big deal at all.

The biggest fuel tank on a locomotive is 6000 litres for a DE11, 4500litres for a DE10, and 3000liters for a DE9.
According to NRZ’s daily locomotive utilisation analysis report for June 16-17 seen by CITE, three locomotives (2104, 34612 and 34840) were parked awaiting fuel while one locomotive (1036) was waiting for sump oil. On the other hand, a total of six locomotives (1011, 1015, 2103, 2109, 34851 and1036) were completely out of service.
As of June 21, the locomotive position was 4 x DE11, 8 x DE10, 17 x DE9, 3 x DE6 and three South African locomotives.
Company insiders say the NRZ is more than capable of generating enough revenue to sustain and even recapitalize itself if it was not for maladministration.
They said in addition to the revenue being generated through goods transportation, the company has a lot of buildings and land for lease under its Real Estates department though they claim everything is for the pension fund. Enough money is there. 
An insider said NRZ was charging US$ 0.50 per tonne per kilometre. A wagon carries up to 70 tonnes, therefore, if it’s carrying coal from Hwange that’s US$35 per km. 
It’s around 300km from Hwange to Bulawayo and it’s around US$10500 per wagon. For a full load of 26 wagons, it becomes US$ 273 000 just from Hwange to Bulawayo. Assuming it’s a DE10 locomotive with a 4500-litre diesel tank and it spends all the diesel, the fuel cost is US$7785. From the income generated US$265 215 remains after removing fuel costs.
Assuming the train moves once a week, US$1 060 860 is generated per month by just one train if it moves from Bulawayo to Hwange once a week.

"Wagons Occasionally Spend Days Parked Because NRZ Has No Fuel" - Report

Director for Bulawayo City Health Services Dr Edwin Sibanda has advised members of the public to ensure that they have not contracted Covid-19 before getting the vaccine.  
Dr Sibanda made these remarks on “Surviving Covid-19 “, an Asakhe online show, where he was giving a general update on the vaccination program being undertaken in the city.
He said getting vaccinated when you are not feeling well makes it difficult to tell whether the vaccine is responsible for the health condition or not.
He explained that in the case where someone gets sick after getting vaccinated, health experts write a report explaining what would have caused the reaction.
He said this is the protocol with all vaccination programs done in the country.
Dr Sibanda further advised that those who would have contracted the virus should wait for 30 days after recovery before getting the vaccine.
Dr Sibanda noted that the response from the people for the vaccine has improved as more people are now turning up for the dose.
He said health workers are now overwhelmed with work as they get up to at least 500 people needing the vaccine per day.
According to the latest Ministry of Health and Child Care Covid-19 report, 2 312 417 people have received their first dose while 1 460 162 have been fully vaccinated.
<h2>Other things to consider By World Health Organisation (WHO):</h2>
The COVID-19 vaccines are safe for most people 18 years and older, including those with pre-existing conditions of any kind, including auto-immune disorders. These conditions include hypertension, diabetes, asthma, pulmonary, liver and kidney disease, as well as chronic infections that are stable and controlled.
If you are pregnant and you are already breastfeeding, you should continue after vaccination.

Ensure You Haven't Contracted COVID-19 Before Getting The Vaccine - Doctor

Exiled Zimbabwean politician and former cabinet minister Saviour Kasukuwere has said the youthful MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa should not rely on Zimbabwe’s judiciary in his fight for democracy.
Speaking to CITE.org in an interview during CITE’s The Breakfast Club Wednesday, Kasukuwere urged Chamisa to go back to the people where he draws his mandate. Said Kasukuwere:
<blockquote>Politics is about the people. Nelson must take the game back to the people. He must go back to the people. Let the people make the decisions. It is about people voting. It is the verdict that will come from the people.
Now if they go for these by-elections and a determination made by the people will make all those who are making those decisions think about it twice again. As it stands, the people’s will or the people’s decision is being undermined
Yes we do respect our courts. They are trying to do the best that they can but at times we ask ourselves: ‘Did the people vote for Khupe? And I think the answer is No! And for Khupe to walk in and say I am now the president of this party, MDC Alliance, I think at a personal level I wouldn’t take such a position.</blockquote>
Kasukuwere’s remarks come after the MDC Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa has been under fire from MDC-T, another MDC <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/khupe-recalls-marondera-mayor-8-bulawayo-councillors-2-vic-falls-councillors/">faction led by Thokozani Khupe which is recalling councillors</a> and legislators aligned to Chamisa.
The interim MDC-T leadership that was reinstated by the March 2020 Supreme Court ruling on the MDC leadership crisis, also seized MDC Alliance headquarters – Harvest House christened Morgan Tsvangirai House.

Kasukuwere Urges Chamisa To "Go Back To The People"

Franklin Sibindi, a journalist with the Centre for Innovation and Technology (CITE ZW) was detained by the police in Bulawayo today, July 31, 2020, for allegedly using an expired accreditation card.
Sibindi was taken to Tshabalala Police Station where he was detained for about three hours without any charges being laid against him.
MISA-Zimbabwe deployed lawyer Nqobani Sithole who attended to the matter and secured his release.
While the Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) has commenced accreditation of journalists, the process has been slow for reporters outside the capital Harare. Due to this slow process, many journalists continue to use 2019 accreditation cards.
Recently, the ZMC reiterated that the 2019 accreditation cards were still valid.

In the video, prominent Bulawayo based journalist Zenzele Ndebele interviews MDC vice president, Professor Welshman Ncube.
In the interview Ncube discuses the implications of the Supreme Court judgment which recently declared Thokozani Khupe the legitimate leader of the MDC-T. The judgment ordered that MDC return to the leadership structures of 2016, before late leader Morgan Tsvangirayi elevated Nelson Chamisa to the vice presidency of MDC-T.

The government has released new passport fees which are applicable with immediate effect.  According to the Centre for Innovation and Technology’s (CITE) Twitter handle, the new fees are as follows:
External passport – $USD318
Internal Zim dollar/RTGS
Urgent (3 days)- $ZWL3180
Ordinary passport – $ZWL530
Three weeks – $ZWL2 000
However, speaking to The Herald on Monday, the Minister of Home Affairs, Kazembe Kazembe dismissed as fake reports that passport charges have been increased. He said:
<blockquote>The local prices have not changed. We are not trying to make profits out of it. Passports are documents that our citizens are supposed to have.
So, Government will still subsidise them, but we are simply saying the fees that people are paying right now are not sustainable but they (charges) have not gone up as yet. No!</blockquote>

Govt Announces New Passport Fees - REPORT

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has condemned the arrest of “Gukurahundi journalist”, Zenzele Ndebele.
Ndebele was arrested on Thursday in Bulawayo at State House where he had gone to attend a meeting between President Emmerson Mnangagwa and civil society leaders. In a statement issued on Friday, the ZCTU said:
<blockquote>We strongly condemn the arrest one of our fearless journalist Zenzele Ndebele the Director of CITE ZW. This is in no way different from the repression, intimidation and abuse trade union leaders and civil society leaders have been facing since independence. We shall overcome.</blockquote>
Ndebele has produced two documentaries on the 1980s Gukurahundi genocide. At one point, he was called by the police for questioning at the Bulawayo Central Police Station.
