A fire incident that occurred on Wednesday night disrupted flight operations at the Victoria Falls International Airport earlier today.
In a statement, the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) Director General, Elijah Chingosho, confirmed that the fire was caused by an electrical fault in the basement of the Air Traffic Control Tower at the airport. Said Chingosho:

The Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) wishes to apologise to all its valued customers for the flight operations disruption which occurred this morning due to a fire incident as a result of an electrical fault in the basement of the Air Traffic Control Tower at Victoria Falls International Airport.
The fire, which occurred on the evening of 10 July 2024, was contained without further incident or damage, and no one was injured.
The Authority would like to advise that the situation has normalised and that flight operations have since been restored as of 1018hrs this morning.
The delays and inconvenience to all valued operators, passengers and other stakeholders are sincerely and deeply regretted.

Fire Incident Disrupts Flights At Victoria Falls International Airport

Zimbabwe has awarded a lucrative aviation deal to one of China’s largest state-owned entities, China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC).
The process of replacing the outdated aviation technology was amplified by Finance minister Mthuli Ncube in his 2021 National Budget last year when he underscored that Zimbabwe was losing potential revenue due to the obsolete infrastructure.
Transport and Infrastructure Development secretary Thedius Chinyanga confirmed the deal when he spoke to the Zimbabwe Independent in an interview this week.
Chinyanga said CHEC had been identified as the most suitable company through a proper procurement process but negotiations over the terms of the contract were underway. He said:
<blockquote>The procurement process on that project was done but the signing of the contract has not yet been done,” he said, without elaborating on the terms and conditions of the agreement.</blockquote>
This comes after in 2016 the Joint Operations Command (JOC), comprised of the military, police, and intelligence chiefs supported the overturning of the US$33 million tender that had been awarded to a Spanish firm Indra Sistemas.
The deal with Indra Sistemas was terminated on the grounds that the tender did not go through procedures as prescribed by law.
Indra Sistemas also did not pass a critical security vetting process by the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) and the Air Force of Zimbabwe.
After Zimbabwe’s radar system broke down in 2019, the Joint Command convened meetings to establish a way forward.
CHEC will not be the first Chinese company to work in Zimbabwe as there are other Chinese firms that are already rolling out massive airport expansion projects in the country.
Currently, Jiangsu International, a company from China is rolling out the US$153 million Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport expansion project to increase the airport’s holding capacity to six million people per annum from 2,5 million.
The firm also undertook the US$150 million Victoria Falls expansion project.

Zimbabwe Awards Lucrative Aviation Deal To Chinese Firm

The Civil Aviation of Zimbabwe has said that it reopened all airports in the country. Below is the statement by the PR and Communications Manager, Hungwe.
<blockquote>Following the approval by the Government of Zimbabwe on the measures put in place with the guidance from the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) for the safe resumption of air travel in Zimbabwe. the CAAZ has reopened all airports with effect from 10 September 2020 for domestic travel. Airports will be opened for international travel from 01 October 2020.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) Acting Director-General Margaret Mantiziba, said “We are delighted to welcome the traveling public and all our stakeholders back to our airports. A number of new measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of passengers. stakeholders and our staff.  These include mandatory temperature screening and sanitization before entering the terminal building as well as continuing to allow only passengers to enter into the terminal buildings. Arriving international passengers must produce a negative PCR result conducted within 48hours prior to travel”.
The CAAZ will continue with its mandate of developing aviation in Zimbabwe in a safe, secure and sustainable manner.

Zimbabwe Aviation Reopens All Airports

The Chief Executive Officer of the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe, David Chawota, has been denied bail. The Daily News reports that Chawota is facing charges of criminal abuse of office. He is said to have offered a €27 900 000 contract to Indra Sistemas, a Spanish company. The company had failed to meet minimum mandatory requirements in the initial bid. It is reported that Chawota linked with the company following the annulment of the tender it was awarded in 2013. Selex Es, one of the bidding companies for Radar Surveillance Systems, challenged the awarding of the tender to Indra resulting in the Supreme Court cancelling the tender in January 2016.
Chawota kept requesting the state and the State Procurement Board (SPB) to respectively award the tender and to directly engage Indra. The tender was finally awarded to the company after Chawota allegedly convinced the SPB that the company had the required funding. However, as heard by the court, Indra’s failure to implement the project is attributed to lack of funding which it is currently seeking from the Afrexim Bank.
Chawota was denied bail and remanded in custody to April 11 by Rumbidzai Mugwagwa the Harare Provincial Magistrate for abusing bail conditions including by threatening and interfering with state witnesses. The abuse of bail conditions was revealed in the testimony of Lawrence Mashawi the investing officer. Mashawi testified after Zivanai Macharaga who was leading the State called him to the stand. The Daily News also reports that Chawota is facing corruption charges after he is alleged to have authorised a payment of $56 042, 76 for promotional material to a company he had interests in without first comparing potential service providers.

No Bail For CAAZ CEO

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAAZ) chief executive officer David Chawota has been arrested on corruption allegations.
Business Times reports that sources with the National Prosecution Authority have confirmed the arrest.
Chawota is said to be facing a number of corruption allegations from radar, labour abuses to resurrecting contracts from 20 years ago that cost the Authority $ 450 000.

Civil Aviation Authority Boss, David Chawota Arrested

The government plans to build provincial airports, with the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) having been tasked with overseeing the project.
This was revealed by Transport Minister Joel Biggie Matiza currently touring new road projects across the country following the release of funds by the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara). Speaking during his tour of Tanganda-Ngundu Highway on Thursday, Matiza said:
<blockquote>The government has begun the process of constructing airports in the province as we move to reinforce the open for business mantra as well as the implementation of the devolution process. We need the roads, we need the airports
The potential in the provinces is very high. As a ministry, we are cognizant of this fact and we would want to see that the economy grows through the contribution of upgrading and building new infrastructure.
Currently, the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe is carrying out feasibility studies for the construction of these airports.</blockquote>

Govt Plans To Build An Airport In Each Province - Minister Matiza

Zimbabwe’s Civil Aviation Authority has grounded South African planes in retaliation for a plane that was grounded yesterday. At least two SAA flights from Harare are reported to have been grounded since Saturday morning. The reasons for them not being allowed to take off were not immediately known.
On Friday, South Africa grounded an Air Zimbabwe aircraft at OR Tambo airport. The aircraft was grounded allegedly due to non-compliance with South African civil aviation regulations‚ particularly the requirement that an operator must be in possession of a Foreign Operator’s Permit‚ together with other documents‚ which must be on-board an aircraft at all times‚ and made available for inspection on request by the relevant authorities.
