<blockquote>ZHDA Statement on the Happenings in the University of Zimbabwe, College of Health Sciences

The ZHDA is concerned about the recent developments in the University of Zimbabwe, College of Health Sciences (UZ-CHS) and wishes to reiterate the sentiments expressed by our seniors, the SHDA.
We refer to the lack of communication given to the fifth year MBChB, Class of 2019, who have been left high and dry, without any provision made for the completion of their program.
We are equally shocked by the clandestine replacement of Mr D. Muchuweti as the Chairman of the Department of Surgery.
The MBChB Class of 2019, in November of last year, was instructed to return home by the University Senate, at the recommendation of a special university taskforce.
The task force came to the conclusion that the environment was not suitable for students to write their final exams given the nationwide incapacitation within government hospitals.
The recommendation was that the students, who were left with less than 3 months to complete their studies, be recalled at the earliest opportunity to finalise their studies and write exams.
The various departments within the College have begun teaching once more, making it clear that the environment is now more suitable and yet, the final year stream continues to hang in limbo.
Despite various attempts to seek clarification through the Dean’s office, there has been no communication.
This has left us with no option but to speculate that the UZ-CHS is pursuing a punitive agenda on the students who refused to be frog-marched to a questionable exam.
Furthermore, in an incredulous move, the class of 2020 has been propelled forward to take their place as the current fifth years, with the 3 months of teaching that they lost forfeited.
These developments pose a significant threat to the health system as in the next few months there will be a severe shortage of interns when the year ahead moves on in their placements.
This perpetual uncertainty has caused unnecessary anxiety and stagnation and requires urgent review.
In another event, we are concerned with the unprocedural replacement of Mr D. Muchuweti as the Chairperson of the Department of Surgery.
Mr Muchuweti is a seasoned academic who has always been expeditious in his defence of the ideals of this profession.
His dismissal, in complete disregard of the University ordinances, is a threat to the self-governance of the departments and the profession.
In light of this, we demand the following:
1. The Dean of CHS be clear on the University’s position on the MBChB V Class of 2019.
2. That they be recalled and priority given to their teaching so they complete their studies and avoid a shortage of interns.
3. MDPCZ and UZ Quality Control Department ensure that due procedure is followed in all programs in the UZ-CHS.
4. The immediate reinstatement of Mr Muchuweti as the Departmental Chairperson, pending a full and public investigation.

ZHDA Concerned Over 5th Year MBChB Class Of 2019 That Has Been Left 'High & Dry' {Full Text}

<blockquote>The Senior Hospital Doctors Association notes the developments in the University of Zimbabwe’s College of Health Sciences with great concern; developments which can potentially degenerate into a serious disruption of Health service delivery in the country.
The University of Zimbabwe has unprocedurally removed the chairperson of the department of surgery who still had about one and half years as chairperson and clandestinely replaced him against the provisions of Ordinance 43 which governs the appointment of chairpersons in departments in the University.
Final year medical (MBCHB) students who were supposed to write their examinations in December 2019 but were sent home when the teaching environment had deteriorated because of the incapacitation in hospitals have still not been recalled despite different departments indicating that conditions for teaching have improved.
Paradoxically, the final year class of 2020, which had also not finished its fourth-year studies has now been propelled ahead and is being taught as final year students.
There is no objective justification proffered for this, leaving students and their parents to speculate whether the University is pursuing a vindictive and punitive agenda.
This decision is not in the national interest as it will create an artificial shortage of junior doctors in a few months.
A group of specializing doctors who were due to write their examinations and complete their studies could not do so because hospitals were incapacitated. They have again been left in limbo with no commitment being made towards their cause.
While just under a week ago, news tabloids reported on the open heart surgery training centre that is being set up at Parirenyatwa hospital with the University of Zimbabwe’s involvement in partnership with a South African company, the University has just terminated Dr David Chimuka’s contract again.
He is the lead person and the most experienced heart surgeon in the country who was spearheading the program. He has been dismissed with no reasons provided despite a shortage of cardiothoracic surgeons.
He was the only one of the three cardiothoracic surgeons available who was working for the University. This points to victimization and a vindictive agenda.
The period from September 2019 to January 2020 has been a difficult time in the medical field. Doctors could not offer any meaningful service in the hospitals because of the incapacitation of hospitals which was well documented and publicized.
The situation had begun to improve despite the many challenges still being faced. The regrettable move by the University authorities threatens to cause regression of the little progress made in attempting to restore normalcy.
In seeking clarity, the members of the Department of Surgery of the University of Zimbabwe have suspended their work services with immediate effect as they await the Vice-Chancellor to address them and give redress to the issues of unfair dismissal of their chairperson and the termination of Dr Chimuka’s contract and the appointment of another chairperson in total disregard to the standing ordinance 43 of the University.
The lecturers who are all surgeons, want urgent attention to be given to the MBChB V 2019 group as well as the MMED students so that they can finish their studies since they were affected by circumstances beyond their control.
The Senior Hospital Doctors Association urges the University authorities and perhaps the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education to quickly act to solve the challenges in the College of Health Sciences as this has potential to cause skills flight and more disruption to the health delivery system yet again.</blockquote>

Pastor Evan Mawarire arrested for addressing students at UZ #FeesMustFall protest (Updated)

The University of Zimbabwe has order students at the College of Health Sciences to vacate residence halls by 13:15 today, after the students protested over a 30 percent increase in fees.
The university alleges that the protesting students had become violent and were throwing stones. According to a notice from one SM Chevo, the registrar:
<blockquote>The Security Department has reported this morning, that a gathering of Medical Students at the Students Union Building had started throwing stones, a behavior that the University of Zimbabwe does not tolerate. The University has now made a decision that all Medical Students should move out of the halls of residence on campus and off campus with immediate effect. All Medical Students are therefore directed to vacate the halls of residence with immediate effect and by no later than 13:15 hours today, 26 June, 2017</blockquote>
The students on the other had are alleging that the university authorities are using <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/news/2017/06/26/uz-fees-must-fall-protest-turns-violent-as-security-attacks-students-with-baton-sticks/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">force to break the protest</a>s.
