A survey conducted by Zim Morning Post on Tuesday revealed that corrupt police officers are demanding bribes from illegal foreign currency dealers to allow them to operate freely at Copa Cabana and other areas in central Harare.
An illegal foreign currency dealer who spoke to the publication disclosed that he has to part with a “tithe/tax” of US$5 each day in police protection fees. Said the dealer:
<blockquote>I make sure every morning I give them US$5 for me to operate my business freely and to avoid my customers being harassed. Without paying, one risks losing their money and going to prison.
The system is well choreographed; they have allocated themselves positions around the CBD and know exactly which team operates around the Copacabana area, Fourth Street or Gulf areas. This is more of a cartel within the police force. Once you pay a service fee (mutero/chegumi), you will be free for the day and no one will arrest you, neither will your customers be harassed.</blockquote>
The corrupt officers are said to be operating at Copa Cabana bus terminus, Market Square and Fourth Street.

Corrupt Police Officers Demand US$5 'Protection Fee' From Illegal Forex Dealers - REPORT

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said that it arrested seven drug dealers at Copacabana rank in central Harare on Sunday night. It said in a statement:
<blockquote>The ZRP last night arrested 7 drug peddlers at Copacabana commuter rank in Harare.
The suspects were found in possession of dagga with some openly smoking the illicit drug near a local supermarket.
The ZRP expresses appreciation to some media houses and individuals who raised the alarm over the activities at this commuter rank.
Police will continue to conduct raids and blitz on all commuter ranks with a view to account for drug peddlers and to maintain law and order.</blockquote>

7 Drug Peddlers Nabbed At Copacabana During Night Raid

A Mbare man died on Sunday after he was brutally assaulted by soldiers while returning from work on Saturday.
The man, identified as Kudakwashe Rixon, 22, was seized by soldiers in uniform at Copacabana Bus Terminus in Central Harare on Sunday.
According to ZimLive.com, a police report of the incident reported at Harare Central Police Station reads as follows:
<blockquote>They dragged him to their motor vehicle (Puma) which was parked nearby. The team then ordered Rixon and other male adults who were there to lie down in the vehicle on their stomachs.
The driver drove off to an unknown bushy area where the team ordered all the people to get out of the lorry by falling down.</blockquote>
Rixon was allegedly beaten with knobkerries, sjamboks and rods. He later went to his Mbare home in a lot of pain. His family rushed him to Harare Hospital were he died upon admission.

Mbare Man Dies After Being Seized By Soldiers At Copacabana And Brutally Assaulted

In a statement released on Sunday, Harare City Council ordered all commuter omnibus operators who use Copacabana Bus Terminus and Market Square Bus Terminus to go back to the Coventry Holding Bay with immediate effect.
In the same statement, Council also ordered all kombi operators who use S.V Muzenda (Fourth Street), and Charge Office Bus Termini to use the space opposite Rhodesville Police Station along Robert Mugabe Road as their holding bay. Council also ordered operators of illegal taxis known as mshika-shika to stop operating. The ranks below will serve the following routes:

<li>a) Copacabana – Western and northwestern suburbs</li>
<li>b) Charge Office – Chitungwiza and southern suburbs</li>
<li>c) Fourth Street – Ruwa, Marondera, eastern and north eastern suburbs</li>
<li>d) Market Square – Western and Southern suburbs e) Rezende – Mt Pleasant and University of Zimbabwe.</li>
</ul>
The statement also advised long distance bus operators that the main rank remains Mbare Musika bus terminus. The new ranks for long distance buses are:
<ul>
<li>Bulawayo bound buses- open space between Long Chen Plaza and National Sports Stadium between Samora Machel Avenue and Kirkman Road.</li>
<li>Mutare bound buses- open space at the corner of Cripps Road and Seke Road next to City of Harare Quarry site.</li>
<li>Masvingo bound buses- terminus at Mbudzi Roundabout.</li>
<li>Bindura Bound commuter omnibuses-open space along Leopold Takawira (western side) between Josiah Tongogara Street and Cork Road.</li>
</ul>

Council is in the process of rationalizing the issuance of route authority and will withdraw these from non-compliant operators. All illegal taxi operators commonly known as mushika-shika are instructed to stop operating forthwith .All those willing to operate as taxi operators should follow the necessary procedure and register.
Council together with the Zimbabwe Republic Police are going to take decisive measures against operators who willfully cause chaos by using undesignated ranks.
LONG DISTANCE BUSES RANKS
Mbare remains the main bus terminus for long distance buses. Bus operators for destinations listed below who wish to utilize the pick-up points specified below , must register at Mbare District Office and obtain special permits . Shuttle buses will ferry passengers to and from the sites.
The long distance buses, which were using pick up and drop off zones in the CBD are with immediate effect instructed to desist from that illegal practice. Long distance buses should use the following pick up and drop off points:
Bulawayo bound buses are going to use an open space between Long Chen Plaza and National Sports Stadium between Samora Machel Avenue and Kirkman Road.Mutare bound buses are going to use the open space at the corner of Cripps Road and Seke Road next to City of Harare Quarry site.
