A new coronavirus variant, known as Deltacron, a mixture of the Omicron and Delta variants, has appeared in South Africa and experts have warned that it might drive the fifth wave of infections.
In a recent television interview, medical expert Dr Vivek Solanki said the Deltacron variant was expected to be highly contagious but not necessarily deadly.
According to Dr Etienne Simon-Loriere, a virologist at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, the body would often recognise the Deltacron variant as the Omicron variant.
As such, COVID-19 symptoms from Deltacron might resemble the omicron variant (the dominant variant driving current infections). The top symptoms to watch out for are:

<li>Sneezing</li>
<li>Chills or shivers</li>

<li>Muscle pains</li>
<li>Loss of smell</li>

While the number of daily COVID-19 tests in Zimbabwe have been low compared to other countries, the test positivity rate has been declining, with Health Ministry recording a positivity rate of 4.4 per cent on Monday.

Here Are The Deltacron Symptoms To Watch Out For

Several countries in Africa have relaxed COVID-19 restrictions in recent weeks but health experts have warned of an impending fifth wave of coronavirus infections.
The Deltacron variant, a mixture of the Omicron and Delta variants, has been driving up COVID-19 cases worldwide and has also appeared in South Africa.
In a television interview, medical expert Dr Vivek Solanki said the Deltacron variant is expected to be highly contagious and could soon spread to the rest of Africa. He said:

It is a mixture of the Omicron and the Delta variant, and it’s where there is one spike of the Omicron variant on the Delta variant.
It is expected to be more contagious than Omicron; however, not necessarily more deadly.
It has been spreading and is mostly in France at the moment, Denmark, Germany, Holland, the US, in Asia, and has now made an appearance in South Africa and will soon spread to the rest of Africa.
The fifth wave, we expect it around the end of April/May to take off really seriously. However, we should be at the side of caution and not overreact and panic.
This is similar to Omicron. It’s like the flu, chances are a lot of people will catch it.
Most people, around 95/96 (per cent), would just recover the symptoms and signs of it.
There will be extremely few people that might end up hospitalised, and those are the ones who are more prone to it with high comorbid conditions and high blood pressure, uncontrolled diabetes and auto-immune disorders.

Zimbabwe is currently battling the fourth wave but infections have remained subdued with the test positivity rate also below 10 per cent.

Health Expert Warn Of An Imminent Deltacron-driven Fifth Wave

Zimbabwe Coronavirus/ COVID-19 Update: 26 November 2021

The virulent Delta variant of COVID-19, first detected in India but now active across the world, accounts for 79 per cent of cases in Zimbabwe, a World Health Organisation (WHO) official has said.
Speaking during a fact-checking training workshop hosted by the Gender Media Connect Zimbabwe, WHO Zimbabwe team leader Dr Lincoln Charimari also revealed that the beta variant, first detected in South Africa accounts for 16 per cent and the alpha strain, first seen in Britain, for 2.5 per cent of local coronavirus cases.
Charimari said all viruses, including coronaviruses, change over time through processes called mutations and that some of these mutations may affect the virus’s properties which include an increase in transmissibility. He said:

These changes may also increase virulence or change in clinical disease presentation, decrease the effectiveness of public health and social measures or available diagnostics, vaccines, therapeutics.
The alpha (first detected in the UK) variant has been reported in 182 countries, territories or areas. The beta variant first detected in South Africa has been reported in 131 countries. 
The gamma variant (first detected in Brazil) was reported in 81 countries (three very recently), and the delta variant (first detected in India) was reported in 132 countries (eight very recently).
In Zimbabwe delta is responsible for 79 per cent of cases; beta for 16 per cent and alpha for 2,5 per cent.
These proportions are dynamic and likely to change over time.

He said it was important for people to continue to get vaccinated to reduce their risk of hospitalisation and developing severe symptoms.
Meanwhile, health expert Professor Solwayo Ngwenya said if members of the public continue being complacent, they may attract worse variants which is likely to lead to more deaths.
He said if nothing is done to change risky behaviours displayed by the public the more vicious variants like the delta plus could hit the country.

Delta Variant Accounts For 79% Of Coronavirus Cases In Zimbabwe

World Health Organisation (WHO) director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said Coronavirus variants are currently proving to be winning against vaccines produced so far.
He speaks as much of the world is experiencing a coronavirus resurgence driven by new variants, Delta, Alpha, Gamma and Beta, strains of the coronavirus first identified in India, the United Kingdom, Brazil and South Africa.
Addressing journalists at a recent media briefing, the WHO boss said:
<blockquote>_The world is at a perilous point in this pandemic. We have just passed the tragic milestone of four million recorded COVID-19 deaths, which likely underestimates the overall toll._
_Compounded by fast-moving variants and shocking inequity in vaccination, far too many countries in every region of the world are seeing sharp spikes in cases and hospitalisation. Variants are currently winning the race against vaccines because of inequitable vaccine production and distribution, which also threatens the global economic recovery._</blockquote>
A weekly report by the United Nations’ organ for up to July 4 showed a 23% spike in new deaths in Africa, the highest in the world compared to a 7% increase in the Western Pacific and 6% in Europe.
Overall, global deaths fell by 7%, indicating that Africa was facing the biggest threat from the new infections.
Its data also showed that the Delta variant was in 96 countries, and Alpha in 172 while Beta and Gamma have been confirmed in 120 and 72 countries, respectively.
The outbreak of the third wave has resulted in increased calls for strict measures to deal with the pandemic while some leaders are accusing economically advanced states of hoarding the vaccines at the expense of developing states.
In Zimbabwe, health experts are calling upon the nation to be vaccinated and are also urging authorities to impose total lockdowns since “figures are likely to get higher.”

WHO: Variants Are Currently Winning Against Vaccines

Three people collapsed and died in different places in Masvingo on Wednesday morning, raising fears that a more lethal SARS-CoV-2 strain could be circulating in the city.
One person collapsed and died in the CBD and another in the populous suburb of Mucheke D at around 9 am today, Masvingo Mirror reported.
A third person, a woman aged 80, also collapsed and died in Runyararo West at around 7 am.
Health officials who spoke to publication on condition of anonymity said they are on maximum alert for COVID-19 cases as they collect these bodies.
The body from Runyararo West was collected by officials from the Ministry of Health and Child Care at around 10 am.
All three are elderly women and Masvingo Mirror was told that the Ministry of Health has started contact tracing.
The first woman collapsed and died while using a toilet at Landmark Bar at around 8:45 am and her body was removed by the Police and Ministry of Health officials at around 10 am.
The body of the woman (75) from Mucheke D was removed by a Nyaradzo Funeral Services ambulance at around 12pm.

3 Women Collapse And Die Within Minutes In Separate Incidents In Masvingo

The Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) says Zimbabwean scientists have not detected the Lambda variant as yet, a highly infectious SARS-CoV-2 strain that was first reported in Peru.
The Lambda variant is now circulating in South Africa, according to Professor Barry Schoub who made the revelations during an interview on Tuesday on the POWER FM Breakfast show.

In an interview with HealthTimes, MoHCC spokesperson, Donald Mujiri said the Lambda variant was yet to be confirmed by local scientists. He said:
<blockquote>What happens is that our scientists go on the ground whenever we classify a place as a COVID-19 hotspot.
They go and take samples and run tests to determine which variants will be dominating that particular area.
At the moment the strain that is more dominant in the country is the B167.2 that was dominant in India.</blockquote>
Mujaji added that local scientists were still carrying out genomic sequencing to determine the number of variants present in Zimbabwe. He said:
<blockquote>We trust our Genomic Sequencing. When that case was reported in Kwekwe from a returnee who had arrived from India, our team of scientists went there and confirmed that indeed it was the variant from India.
There is not something we can hide, this is COVID-19 and if we detected a new variant detected we will announce it so as to ensure that our people know what they are dealing with.</blockquote>
Originally identified in Peru last year, the Lambda variant is responsible for 82% of new COVID cases in Peru over the past two months.
About a third of cases in Chile over the same time frame was also caused by the Lambda strain, and the U.K. is among the countries that have seen a smattering of cases.
In mid-June, it was first deemed a variant of interest by the World Health Organization (WHO) — a designation given to a variant that may be more transmissible than the original strain.  The other variants of interest are Epsilon, Zeta, Eta, Theta, Iota, and Kappa.
Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta are considered variants of concern by WHO. Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta originally were detected in the UK, South Africa, Brazil and India respectively.

'Zimbabwe Hasn’t Confirmed Presence Of COVID-19 Lambda Variant Yet'

A new variant of the COVID-19 virus known as Lambda which was first detected in Peru some eight months ago is now circulating in South Africa.
This was confirmed by Professor Barry Schoub during an interview on Tuesday on the POWER FM Breakfast show.
It has not yet been established if COVID-19 vaccines currently on the market were effective against it.
While the Delta COVID-19 variant continues to wreak havoc in Zimbabwe, a major concern is the Lambda variant, which carries mutations that could potentially make it more resistant to neutralising antibodies.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the Lambda COVID-19 variant accounts for around 81% of the cases reported since April in Peru and has since been added to the WHO’s list of variants of interest.
However, WHO believes such strains are less of a threat than its four “variants of concern” — Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta originally detected in the UK, South Africa, Brazil and India respectively — but says they need to be monitored closely.

New COVID-19 Lambda Variant Discovered In SA

Eight (8) people tested positive for coronavirus in Hurungwe District, Mashonaland West Province over the weekend, raising fears that COVID-19 might have spread to rural areas which had hitherto remained largely virus-free.
Among some of the infected persons were expecting mothers admitted at Chidamoyo Mission Hospital.
This comes at a time when the country is on high alert amid fears of a third wave and the new Delta variant, previously known as the Indian variant, is affecting Zimbabwe. Mashonaland West provincial medical officer Gift Masocha told NewsDay:
<blockquote>I can confirm that we have had eight new cases in Hurungwe district. Among these were cases of five expecting mothers at Chidamoyo District Hospital.</blockquote>
Karoi Town Council spokesperson Precious Nharara confirmed that one council employee and two interns tested positive and were in self-isolation. She said:
<blockquote>This serves to inform that a council employee and two students on attachment have tested positive for COVID-19. The three are stationed at council’s main offices.
Karoi Town Council on Friday afternoon facilitated the testing of their colleagues and it would seem at the moment it is the three who are positive for COVID-19.
In the meantime, the premises have been disinfected accordingly and contact tracing is currently underway.</blockquote>
The Delta variant of the coronavirus <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/06/06/delta-variant-40-per-cent-more-transmissible-uk-minister/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">is estimated to be 40 per cent more transmissible than the Alpha variant</a> that caused the previous wave of infections in the United Kingdom, the country’s health minister Matt Hancock said on Sunday.

Coronavirus Spreads To Rural Areas

Twenty-seven (27) people including children and members of staff at Mary Ward Children’s home in Kwekwe have tested positive for coronavirus.
Midlands Provincial Medical Director (PMD) Dr Reginald Mhene confirmed the development.
Mhene said those who tested positive at the children’s home have been placed in isolation at the facility. He said:
<blockquote>The children’s home houses 66 children and when tests were conducted at the facility, 27 people including staffers and children, tested positive. Modalities have been put in place that whoever gets ill will be taken to hospital.</blockquote>
There has been a rise in new infections in Kwekwe with more cases recorded within schools.
Mary Ward, Ruvimbo and Chiedza primary schools are some of the schools that have recorded positive cases among pupils.
Kwekwe Assistant Director Nursing Services, Sister Patricia Shumba recently told a full council meeting that they decided to carry out the tests as part of the contact tracing. She said:
<blockquote>We have some people who tested positive and passed the virus to their families. We then conducted contact tracing which then led us to schools where we got those figures of children testing positive.</blockquote>
Kwekwe Mayor, Councillor Angeline Kasipo said the municipality decided to convert Garandichauya Beerhall into an infectious disease hospital and its refurbishment was almost complete.
Kwekwe was placed under lockdown following the detection of the Delta variant of the coronavirus in the town which also claimed the life of Robson Kadenhe, a local businessman.
