A woman from Chief Mutasa in Mutasa District, Manicaland Province, allegedly misrepresented herself as the mother of her deceased grandson and stole his corpse from the mortuary.
The woman, Dropper Makwanza, reportedly “stole” the body of the late Denver Makwanza (14) from Bonda Mission Hospital mortuary and fast-tracked the burial without the knowledge and consent of the deceased’s mother, Lisa Mafunga.
According to <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/corpse-stolen-from-mortuary/">The Manica Post</a>, Makwanza allegedly falsified information and impersonated the deceased’s mother to collect a burial order for her grandson without informing and agreeing with the mother.
Chief Mutasa, who presided over the matter last Saturday at his traditional court, was shocked by the incident and referred it to Ruda Police Station for criminal investigations.
He adjourned the matter to June 8, 2024.
Arguing his case before the traditional court, Lisa’s father, Peter Mafunga, claimed his family only discovered that Denver had been buried through the grapevine. He said:

We only discovered the truth after rumours started circulating, and it devastated us. Moreover, my grieving daughter was waiting for the arrival of the deceased’s father from South Africa so that they could bury their late son together. She did not know that her son had already been buried without her knowledge.
My daughter and the deceased’s father had separated, and I was the one looking after their two children all along. To hear that they buried one of the children I have been taking care of behind my back and without my grieving daughter’s knowledge or consent is shocking.
My family lives just a village away from theirs. This unthinkable act subjected my grieving daughter to emotional and psychological trauma, torture, unimaginable pain and suffering.
Her son’s death was tragic, and the events that followed rubbed salt and hot pepper on a bleeding wound, and such a scar will take ages to heal.
She is emotionally and psychologically paralysed, and I hope justice will be served, with those responsible facing the full wrath of the law for their despicable actions.

Mafunga further claimed that Dropper Makwanza forged documents, and misrepresented herself as the deceased’s mother to collect the corpse from the hospital mortuary for burial.
Lisa, with tears rolling down her cheeks throughout the court session, said that she did not even know where her late son was buried. She said:
<blockquote>
I am in pain, and as I speak, I do not know where they buried my son. I did not bid him farewell. They manipulated the whole process and collocated his corpse and buried it behind my back.
</blockquote>
However, Makwanza disputed all the allegations, arguing that she informed Lisa about Denver’s death and the Mafungas then demanded US$500 to attend the funeral. She said:
<blockquote>
They demanded that we pay them US$500 before they would allow the burial of their grandchild. We were in the process of looking for the money and had raised about US$250, but could not raise the whole amount.
I then contacted the deceased’s father in South Africa, who sent us some money for the burial and instructed us to bury his child, and there was nothing we could do.

She also said they collected the corpse from the hospital with the aid of letters from the police and their village head. Said Makwanza:
<blockquote>
The letters stated that the deceased’s mother and her family were refusing to take part in the funeral proceedings.
Those are the same letters together with my identity card that we used to obtain the burial order. Everything was done above board.
I never forged any documents and never misrepresented myself as the child’s mother.
</blockquote>
Chief Mutasa criticised both families for their conduct and vowed to get to the bottom of the matter.
He said it was culturally unacceptable to connive to bury the deceased without the knowledge and consent of the grieving mother.
The traditional leader also said it was unconscionable for any bereaved family to demand payment as a condition for participating in the funeral proceedings of a relative. He said:

How could you stoop so low as to steal a corpse and bury it without the grieving mother’s knowledge or consent? And what kind of family would demand payment to sanction the burial of their loved one?
Why did you not just let them bury the child according to the Burial and Cremation Act, and deal with any other outstanding issues afterwards?
Both families were wrong, and we will deal with this matter to its logical conclusion.
First, we need to ascertain how you got the burial order without any identity particulars to prove that you were the mother of the deceased as well as how you collected the corpse from the mortuary.

The Burial and Cremation Act provides regulations related to the burial of deceased persons and stillborn children.
The Act covers provisions for both burial (in earth, interment, or other forms of sepulture) and cremation (burning of human bodies).

Grandmother "Steals" Boy's Corpse From Mortuary

A Bulawayo man on Wednesday killed his wife in cold blood and went on to sexually abuse her corpse in full view of the couple’s two minor children.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident that occurred on 7th December 2022 at a house in Cowdray Park in Bulawayo. 
He identified the suspect as Judge Evans Zinzombe (36). Said Asst Comm Nyathi:

The suspect allegedly sneaked into the room where his wife Pholomina Mabika (32), daughter (12), and son (7) before strangling her to death with his hands.
The suspect and his wife were reportedly having marital disputes which forced them to sleep in separate rooms.
After the callous murder, the suspect allegedly went on to sexually abuse the body in full view of his children.
The children spent the whole night with the body before a police report was made in the morning.

Police later said the body of the suspect was found hanging in a local church in Cowdray Park.

Man Kills Wife, Sexually Violates Her Corpse In Front Of Couple’s Children

Plaxedes Mashasha, an elderly woman from Zengeza 3, Chitungwiza, appeared in court on Thursday and was further remanded in custody to 9 December.
Mashasha is being accused of keeping her husband’s corpse in the house for about a week.
She also allegedly confined her son, Grant (39) to the ceiling of their house for the past 14 years.
Regional magistrate, Clever Tsikwa, said Mashasha must be tested for mental illness first before her bail application is heard.
Mashasha reportedly filed a sudden death report to the police and the cops discovered the body of her husband in a decomposing state.
She said her late husband suffered a stroke in 1992 and had been using a wheelchair until his death.
Mashasha said they had five children together and Grant was the fourth born.

Woman Who Kept Hubby's Corpse To Spend Two Weeks In Custody

Police in Midlands Province have appealed to the public for help in identifying the body of a male adult who is approximately 33 years old who was fatally assaulted by a mob on 29 October 2022 at Zhombe Shopping Centre.
The corpse is stuck at Kwekwe General Hospital and his relatives have not yet come forward to claim it.
ZRP spokesperson in Midlands Province, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, said the deceased was found stealing groceries at a shop and he was assaulted several times all over the body with unknown objects and sustained severe injuries. He said:
<blockquote>
Police are calling for assistance from the public in identifying the dead body of a male adult who died after being assaulted by unknown assailants.
The incident occurred at Zhombe Shopping Centre, Kwekwe on 29 October 2022 at about 0100 hours.
The story was covered by the media when the incident happened.
No relative came forward to claim the body and his particulars are not known.

The deceased was putting on a pair of blue work-suit trousers with a black belt, a blue jacket with a zip, and a blue t-shirt. Added Insp Mahoko:

Insp Mahoko said the deceased had no particulars on his person, making the identification of the body very difficult.

Kwekwe General Hospital Stuck With Corpse Of Victim Of Mob Justice

A 29-year-old man from Hobhouse, Mutare, was arrested recently after he allegedly killed his wife, raped the corpse and hung it from a roof truss in their bedroom in a bid to make it appear as if she had committed suicide.
Joel Mutasa (29), reportedly committed the offence in the presence of the couple’s two children aged seven and five, respectively.
Mutasa was later arrested by detectives in Penhalonga, just outside Mutare.
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed Mutasa’s arrest.
Asst Insp Chinyoka said Mutasa and his wife, Bryline Ngare (27), had a long-standing dispute, with Mutasa accusing Ngare of having an extramarital affair. He said:

Mutasa left home in January. On February 25, the now late Ngare retired to bed with her two children. Around midnight, Mutasa came and knocked on the door. Ngare opened the door.
</blockquote>
A misunderstanding ensued between the two and Mutasa grabbed Ngare by the neck and strangled her to death.
After killing his estranged wife, Mutasa undressed her and became intimate with the corpse.
Police said Mutasa used a wet towel to clean Ngare’s private parts before changing her clothes.
Mutasa allegedly took a thick yellow twine and joined it with a wire, tied it around the deceased’s neck, lifted her up from the bed and hung her on the roof truss.
Hours after Mutasa had fled from the scene, a neighbour was awakened by the couple’s children who were crying as they tried to open the door.
The neighbour opened the door and saw Ngare’s body hanging from the truss.
Mutasa was arrested while at Premier Central, Penhalonga, where he was panning for gold.
He admitted to strangling his wife and raping the corpse and faking her suicide.

Hubby Murders Wife, Violates Corpse

Police in Kwekwe have for the past three months been stuck with the body of a man that was retrieved from the scene of a road traffic accident that happened along Gokwe-Kwekwe Road on 20 October 2021 at around 2:45 PM.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson for Midlands Province Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko told The Mirror that the deceased, believed to have been around 30 years of age at the time of his demise, had no identification documents on him.
He said that the body was found after a Honda Fit vehicle in which the deceased was travelling was involved in an accident at Tiger Reef Junction.
Inspector Mahoko said the deceased is dark in complexion, approximately 30 years, medium built and approximately 1.5 metres in height.
He was wearing a red t-shirt inscribed Manchester United, a black pair of jean trousers and black shoes when his body was discovered.
Inspector Mahoko appealed to people with a missing relative to come and identify the body at Kwekwe Mortuary. He said:

ZRP is concerned with the number of sudden death cases of people without identification particulars. It is suspected that the man is known as Alboy Ncube.
Members of the public missing a relative matching the description given above are advised to approach Kwekwe Traffic or the nearest Police station.

Police In Kwekwe Stuck With Corpse Of  An Accident Victim

An Epworth man on Sunday dumped the body of his deceased seven-month-old child at a midwife’s home blaming her for causing the death.
Steven Shiri (32), linked the child’s death to the midwife Ndakaziva Mawire (48) who had allegedly threatened to cause the child’s death if she was not paid for her services.
Speaking to H-Metro after he had taken the corpse back to his house from Mawire’s place, Shiri revealed that he had a misunderstanding with Mawire that lasted from the time his wife was pregnant until the day of delivery. He said:

I sired the child who just died with my second wife and she had a twin brother. They were delivered by Mawire seven months ago.
Prior to the incident, I had refused to give my second wife money to register at the local clinic because we were having problems.
So when my wife was now due Mawire offered to help and charged me US$15.
She wanted to be paid before she did the job and we had a misunderstanding that lasted until the day of delivery.

Shiri accused Mawire of failing to properly deliver the second child since they were twins, resulting in complications. He added:

After delivering the first child, Mawire failed to notice the second child leaving her untrained aide to pull the second child by her hands before pushing her back in again.
I immediately noticed that something went wrong during the delivery and it was evident on the child’s arms which could not bend.
A few days after the birth, I asked Mawire to accompany my wife to the hospital when my daughter’s arms became swollen.
She refused to go to the hospital as a witness and the doctors also said the child required an operation but only when she had grown up.
Mawire demanded more money for the extra child she did not expect to deliver, I told her I had paid her enough.
She then told me kuti ndichazviona zvichaitika kumwana since ndange ndaramba kumubhadhara imwe mari yaaida. [that I will see what will befall the child since I had refused to pay the additional fee that she had demanded].

Shiri said on Saturday evening, he paid Mawire US$15 but the child died the following morning.
However, Mawire denied ever causing the death. She said Shiri brought the corpse to her home and when she tried to escape, he manhandled and assaulted her.
She said she managed to escape and reported the matter to Epworth Police.
Mawire told H-Metro that she has been a midwife for the past 18 years and is licensed by the Traditional Medical Practitioners Council.

Corpse Dumped At Epworth Midwife's House

Four Hopley families were shocked and left traumatised on Tuesday after discovering that they had been drinking water from a well that had a dead human being for nearly a week.
The body of 33-year-old Bowen Mutori was retrieved from the well six days after he went missing but the affected families had been drinking the water unbeknownst that there was a dead body inside.
A decision was taken to empty the well when the stench became too strong, only to find a body floating on the water.
Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Simon Chazovachii confirmed the incident. He said:
<blockquote>At around 2100 hours, it was reported that he saw an unknown vehicle passing by the road outside his house and told his wife that the motorist was looking for him.
He was reported to have put on his shoes and went away only to be found dead six days later. His body was found floating in a well at a house in their neighbourhood.
The owner of the house where the body was found is reported to have been drawing water from the well unknowingly, forcing them to try and empty the well after an unpleasant smell coming from it.
The families continued to draw water from the well until they discovered the body floating.
The body had a swollen face and bruises on the neck and police are appealing for information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects.</blockquote>
Chikomborero Chiwona ( 39), who discovered the body floating in her well, told H-Metro that four families had been drawing water for use without realising there was a body in the well. She said:
<blockquote>We tried to empty the well because of the stench from the well but nothing was found on only to discover the body floating the following day.
… We used to fetch water for drinking and watering our garden, but we are now forced to look for alternative sources of water.</blockquote>
The well has since been filled with earth as the owners consider it improper to continue drawing water from it.

Corpse Found Floating In Drinking Well After 6 Days

Nyanga villagers who recently <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/01/26/watch-villagers-float-a-coffin-with-a-dead-body-across-a-flooded-river-in-nyanga/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">canoed across the flooded Gairezi River to repatriate the body of their relative who died in Mozambique</a> are now in trouble with authorities.
The brave villagers are accused of flouting laws on the repatriation of dead bodies and crossing the border illegally.
They used a makeshift canoe to bring back the remains of Chengetai Nyamutowa (43) who died in a motorcycle accident in Mozambique.
Speaking to Manica Post, Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luxson Chananda said the men face arrest and investigations into the incident are already underway. He said:
<blockquote>Nyamutowa had travelled to Mozambique when he was involved in an accident on January 23. He was travelling on a motorcycle when the accident happened and died on the spot.
It was established that Nyamutowa’s family and community members used a makeshift canoe to repatriate the body through the flooded Gairezi River.
These people face arrest and investigations are already underway to identify the culprits.
They should have adhered to the repatriation processes of taking the body through a designated entry point.</blockquote>
The 12 Nyanga villagers’ act of bravery recorded in a video has since gone viral on social media.
