The Zimbabwe National Soccer Supporters Association (ZNSSA) have petitioned the High Court seeking a Declaratory Order over to have the 2019 COSAFA Cup held in this country.
ZNSSA leader Eddie “Mboma’’ Nyatanga, yesterday filed an application with the High Court in Harare over the issue and cited Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Minister Kirsty Coventry as the respondent. He also questioned Sport and Recreation Commission director-general Prince Mupazviriho’s appointment. Mupazviriho was one of the key people who handled the ZIFA bid to stage the COSAFA Cup. Nyatanga wants the High Court to issue a Declaratory Order that will nullify the announcement that Coventry made on the hosting of the COSAFA Cup. Nyatanga’s application reads:
<blockquote>The respondent on February 18, 2019 made an announcement that ZIFA would not host the 2019 edition of the COSAFA senior men’s football tournament scheduled to be hosted in Zimbabwe,’’ Nyatanga said in his application. The respondent’s announcement of her decision on behalf of the Zimbabwe Government and ZIFA is improper and beyond the scope of her powers in terms of the SRC Act. The decision was not for the respondent to make or announce as ZIFA had only sought Government guarantee in order to make an informed decision.’</blockquote>
Coventry has 10 days within which to file her opposing papers.

Kirsty Coventry Taken To Court Over COSAFA Tournament

Organisers of the first COSAFA senior men’s football tournament are still searching for a new host nation for the 2019 edition after Zimbabwe turned down the rights citing short notice. Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Minister Kirsty Coventry made the announcement yesterday following a marathon meeting with senior officials from ZIFA and the Sports Commission. Zimbabwe, who last hosted the tournament in 2009, were provisionally handed the rights to organise this year’s edition, pending Government guarantees, when COSAFA secretary-general Sue Destombes toured the country last month and made the announcement.
However, after wide consultations, the stakeholders felt the deal was not good for Zimbabwe because of limited time.  According to Coventry, the country was still open to hosting the event in the future.

Zimbabwe Turns Down Opportunity To Host Cosafa Cup

Warriors goalkeeper George Chigova saved two penalties to help Zimbabwe book their place in the final of the 2018 COSAFA Cup.
The Warriors will now face Zambia whom they beat in the same round last year. Khama Billiat, Jameson Mukombwe and Alec Mudimu converted their kicks. Chigova saved Lesotho’s first two penalties before he was beaten on the third one. Lesotho’s fourth kick was ruled out by the referee to give the Warriors 3-1 penalty shoot-out victory.

Zimbabwe Through To Cosafa Cup Final

Ovidy Karuru is out of the Cosafa Cup following an injury which was initially thought to be mild but will now require surgery.
Karuru was taken off in the second half of the penalty shoot-out win against Namibia after a tackle on his ankle forced him off. He will now miss the semi-final against Lesotho scheduled for the new Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane tomorrow and the final on Saturday if Zimbabwe qualify.

Ovidy Karuru Out Of COSAFA Cup

Warriors goalkeeper George Chigova saved three penalties in the penalty shootout against Botswana as the Warriors booked a semifinal place in the 2018 COSAFA Cup with a 4-1 victory that followed a 1-1 draw in the 90 minutes.
Zimbabwe will take on Lesotho, while Zambia will clash with Madagascar who beat South Africa. Both will be played at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday.
Zimbabwe took the lead in the 39th minute when Evans Rusike scored. Botswana’s Onkabetse Makgantai scored the equalizer in the 60th minute. He is now the top goal scorer with his fourth goal of the competition.

Sunday Chidzambwa Names Provisional Warriors Squad For COSAFA Cup

Zimbabwe claimed a record fifth COSAFA Castle Cup after beating Zambia 3-1 in the final played at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace in South Africa’s North West province on Sunday.
Knox Mutizwa scored his fifth goal of the tournament before substitute Lubinda Mundia of Zambia leveled matters in the 39th minute. Halftime came with the scoreline level at 1-1. Talent Chawapiwa scored the Warrior’s second in the 57th minute after Mutizwa’s effort came off the post. Ocean Mushure scored his fourth goal of the tournament in the 67th minute after a pass from man of the match Chawapiwa.

Warriors overcome Zambia to win record Cosafa title

The Warriors are through to the finals of the 2017 edition of the Cosafa Cup that is currently underway in South Africa after beating Lesotho 4-3 in a thrilling match played on Thursday evening. In the final, Zimbabwe will meet Zambia on Sunday. Zambia beat Tanzania 4-1 in another semi-final.
Knox Mutizwa scored a hatrick while the other goal was scored by Talent Chawapiwa. Mutizwa scored in the 18th minute from a corner before Lesotho’s Motebang equalised in the 41st minute to send both teams level at halftime. Mutizwa scored his second in the 51st minute after pouncing onto a defence splitting pass from Chawapiwa. Chawapiwa scored his goal in the 64th minute before being substituted to make way for Mitchell Katsvairo.
Lesotho made it 3-2 in the 79th minute after the Warriors lapsed in concentration. However their joy was short-lived as Mutizwa scored his third and Zimbabwe’s 4th in the 82nd minute. Lesotho scored a penalty in extra time but the damage had already been done.

Ovidy Karuru who is co-skipper at the 2017 Cosafa Castle Cup has made history by scoring the most goals in a single tournament with 6 goals to his name so far.
He has now scored one more goal than previous joint leaders, Sarivahy Vombola (2015) of Madagascar and Swaziland’s Felix Badenhorst (2016), and two more than Zimbabwean Cuthbert Malajila, who scored four goals when Zimbabwe won the tournament in 2009.

Ovidy Karuru makes Cosafa Cup history, scores most goals in a single tournament

Zimbabwe are through to the semi-finals of the 2017 Cosafa Castle Cup after beating Swaziland 2-1.
Ovidy Karuru scored in the 16th minute before Badenhorst leveled scores in the 47th minute. Knox Mutizwa came off the bench for Prince Dube in the 65th minute and scored in the 78th minute to give Zimbabwe a win.
Zimbabwe will now meet Lesotho for a place in the finals.

The Warriors booked their place into the quarterfinals of the 2017 Cosafa Castle Cup following a 6-0 win over the Seychelles.
Ovidy Karuru who clinched the man of the match award again scored a hat-trick. Ocean Mushure scored twice and Prince Dube scored a goal. Zimbabwe will now face Swaziland in the quarterfinals.

Warriors book Cosafa Castle Cup quarterfinal place after beating Seychelles 6-0

The Warriors’ technical team has filed an official complaint over poor match officiating by referee Joshua Bondo in the group B match against Madagascar on Wednesday. The Warriors technical team state that they were denied two clear penalties in a space of two minutes in incidents involving Raphael Manuvire and Ovidy Karuru. They also highlighted various contradictions between Bondo and his assistants.
In a letter dated 28, 2017 to the Cosafa  organising commitee, the Warriors technical team said that they will play the game against Seychelles under protest. Part of the letter reads:
<div dir="auto">The controversial match officiating displayed by Bondo denied Zimbabwe its much needed victory as our legitimate penalty appeals were denied.</div>

In the 87th minute, our captain Ovidy Karuru was sent flying by Madagascar goalkeeper Jean Dieu Donne Randrianasolo and again Bondo ruled otherwise and denied us a penalty.</div>

<div dir="auto">The referee was explicitly biased against our team and on many occasions, he seemed to contradict his assistants and communication breakdown was clear between him and his counterparts.</div>

Warriors file complaint against ref, to play against Seychelles under protest

Warriors skipper Ovidy Karuru was awarded the man of match after the senior men’s team beat Mozambique 4-0 in a COSAFA match played in South Africa this evening.
Karuru scored in the 43rd minute. In the second half Karuru doubled the lead in the 64th minute with a header from a corner. Karuru could have grabbed a hat-trick in the 75th minute but failed to score despite being one on one with the keeper. Two minutes later Ocean Mushure scored the third with a free kick just outside the box. Herentals forward Blessing Majarira then scored the fourth in the 92nd minute after coming on for Talent Chawapiwa.

Sunday Chidzambwa names COSAFA 2017 provisional squad

ZIFA has appointed Sunday Chidzambwa the national team coach for the upcoming Cosafa tournament which will be staged in South Africa’s North West province from June 25-July 9.
Making the announcement, ZIFA said that Chidzambwa will only be in charge for the Cosafa tournament while Norman Mapeza will remain interim coach in charge of the AFCON campaign. Wellington Mpandare will remain the senior men’s team manager while Charity Munemo retains her post as team manager for the Mighty Warriors. Other coaches are as follows:

Sunday Chidzambwa appointed national team head coach for Cosafa tournament

The Warriors are set to play Mozambique, Madagascar and Seychelles in Group B of the COSAFA Castle Cup with the group winner set to meet Swaziland in the quarterfinals.
The annual tournament organised by the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) will be held in South Africa’s North West province from June 25-July 9. Defending champions South Africa will play against the winner of Group A which consists of Angola, east African guest nation Tanzania, Mauritius and Malawi. Tanzania are competing for the third time after 1997 and 2015, with Comoros Islands having declined to take part this year.
Botswana take on Zambia in the other quarterfinal while 2015 winners Namibia play Lesotho. The COSAFA Castle Cup was first played in 1997 and has been won four times each by South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Angola have three titles to their name and Namibia one.

Zimbabwe drawn in Group B of COSAFA Castle Cup

According to a letter from regional football association Cosafa, Zimbabwe has been placed in Group B of the Cosafa Castle Cup together with Mozambique, Madagascar, and Seychelles.
The dates of the fixtures are as follows: 
26 June: Zimbabwe vs Mocambique 
28 June: Zimbabwe vs Madagascar 
30 June: Zimbabwe vs Seychelles
The winner of Group B will face Swaziland in the quarterfinals.
Group A comprises of Angola, Tanzania, Mauritius and Malawi. The winner of this group will face reigning Champions South Africa in the quarter-finals.  The other quarterfinal fixtures will be as follows:
Botswana vs Zambia 
Namibia vs Lesotho
The Cosafa Castle Cup will be staged in South Africa’s North West province from June 25-July 9.
