Former Higher and Tertiary Education Minister Professor Jonathan Moyo has said endorsing presidential candidates four years before elections causes coups.
Speaking on Twitter, Moyo said during former President Robert Mugabe’s days presidential candidate endorsements would be made days before an election. Moyo was reacting to news the Zanu-PF Women’s league had also endorsed President Mnangagwa as the sole 2023 Zanu-PF presidential candidate. The party’s Youth League and the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) have also endorsed President Mnangagwa’s candidature for the 2023 presidential election as has almost every province. Said Moyo:
<blockquote>“ZANUPF WOMEN’S LEAGUE ENDORSE MNANGAGWA AS SOLE CANDIDATE” “SOLE 2023 candidate”? In the Mugabe days such ENDORSEMENTS would be seen a year, not more than four years, before a poll. A new dispensation, this? Don’t people learn? Such things beget coups!</blockquote>

Endorsing Presidential Candidates 4 Years Before Elections Causes Coups: Jonathan Moyo On Mnangagwa 2023 Presidential Candidate Endorsements

Former President Robert Mugabe has revealed why he resigned from power in November last year following a military intervention led by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga code-named Operation Restore Legacy.
In an exclusive interview with ITV News Africa Correspondent John Ray, Mugabe said he does not believe that he should still be Zimbabwe’s president but that his successor should have been properly elected. He says his said he resigned to save the situation and to save the people of Zimbabwe. Said Mugabe:
<blockquote>My removal was forced. I had to resign in order to save the situation, and the people who advised me were saying ‘if you don’t resign there will be bloodshed, there is going to be blood shed’, and some of them were religious people so I resigned.</blockquote>

When asked if he resigned to for the safety of his family Mugabe had this to say:
<blockquote>Even now my family is safe. It was the safety of the people. Yes there were guns fired but that’s it. But on the whole we were safer than most of the people.</blockquote>
Mugabe reiterated that Mnangagwa is illegitimate and an imposition of the army.

Mugabe Reveals Why He Resigned

Zimbabwe’s former President Robert Mugabe is bitter over his successor Emmerson Mnangagwa’s betrayal.
Addressing journalists at his Blue Roof residence in Borrowdale, Harare, on Thursday, Mugabe said he never expected Mnangagwa would betray him considering all he had done for him. Said Mugabe:
<blockquote>I always had Emmerson Mnangagwa. I brought him into Government, but I never thought he whom I had nurtured and brought into Government and whose life I had worked so hard in prison to save as he was threatened with hanging, would one day be the man that would turn against me. But there it was, there it is. It happened in the 15th of November. He was assisted by the army. I said it was a coup d’e tat. Some people had refused to call it a coup d’e tat. He could never have assumed the presidency of the country without the assistance of the army.</blockquote>

Mugabe Bitter Over Mnangagwa Betrayal

Former Higher Education Minister Jonathan Moyo who is in hiding has claimed that Zimbabwe will become another Somalia if the President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration continues in power.
Moyo said this in a telephone interview with Reuters from an undisclosed location. Said Moyo:
<blockquote>This is a military government. You cannot send the arsonists to be the fire brigade. If you don’t intervene when there has been such an outrageous, brazen attack on a constitutional order, you are simply opening the floodgates to conflict. If they don’t act, just as the sun will rise tomorrow, Zimbabwe will be another Somalia. There will be bloodshed.</blockquote>
Moyo has also said there is<a href="https://wp.me/p7XhIx-agU"> no evidence that Zimbabwe’s former president Robert Mugabe resigned voluntarily when the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) took over all institutions of the State</a>. Reuters could not reach Government officials officials for a comment. But in response to earlier criticisms levelled by Moyo on Thursday, government spokesman George Charamba said Moyo was a bitter defeated politician.

Zimbabwe Will Be Another Somalia, There Will Be Bloodshed Unless International Community Acts: Moyo

The Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE) lost more than $5 billion in 5 days owing to the country’s  political uncertainty.
Both the industrial index and mining index lost 10,36 percent and 3,41 percent on Tuesday to close at 347,25 points and 129,82 points respectively. The mainstream index has so far dropped 35 percent since Wednesday when the military announced they had taken control.
Market capitalisation stood at $9,9 billion on Tuesday while $2,6 million was recorded in market turnover. The largest company by market cap , Delta lost 19,87 percent in the day to trade at 131,4 cents. Axia and Barclays dropped 19,8 percent and 19,71 percent to settle at 20,05 cents and 5,62 cents respectively. Lafarge also lost 19,37 percent to trade 144 cents. Fidelity and Meikles lost 15,38 percent and 15,21 percent to 11 cents and 28,83 cents respectively while Turnall and Zim papers lost 15,25 percent and 15,38 percent to close at 1 cent and 1,1 cents respectively.

"You don't overthrow a 93 year old man" Trevor Noah comments on Zim situation

Contrary to social media reports, Clayson Monyela, head of public policy at Department of International Relations, confirmed to 702 that the South African envoy sent to Zimbabwe has arrived and is welcomed.
Monyela could however not comment on the whereabouts of former vice president Emerson Mnangagwa. Said Monyela:
<blockquote>I have not been cleared to speak on that issue although I am aware of certain things. Let’s just say all role players who have to do with the challenge will be engaged.</blockquote>
He says that one of the people they have to meet is Robert Mugabe. Said Monyela:
<blockquote>The priority is to engage President Mugabe, the generals and the key people who have a role to play in unlocking the current impasse there.</blockquote>

Social Media reports stated that the delegation had been denied entry into Zimbabwe. The message reads:
<blockquote>The delegation that was sent by SADC chair South African President Jacob Zuma has been reportedly denied entry at the then Robert Mugabe Airport. Reports says that the delegation was told by an heavily armed military uniformed unwelcoming soldiers that they should return to South Africa as Zimbabwe Defence Forces has got everything under control, and Zimbabwe is in no hurry to seek SADC or any foreign intervention at this moment and time.</blockquote>

SA Envoy welcomed in Zim contrary to social media reports

Institute of Security Studies (ISS) Consultant Liesl Louw-Vaudran argues that although the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) denies a military coup the current situation in Zimbabwe has all the elements of a coup.
She argues that President Robert Mugabe is under house arrest which means that the military is in control. Louw-Vaudran applauds SADC Chair and South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma for sending an envoy to Zimbabwe to facilitate the transition to civilian rule. Said Louw-Vaudran:
<blockquote>We have all the elements of a coup. President Robert Mugabe is effectively under house arrest. You could just ask the question so who is in power in Zimbabwe today? The army. They are deciding. He is not at liberty to run the country.</blockquote>

VIDEO: "We have all the elements of a coup." - ISS Consultant comments on Zimbabwe situation

SADC chairperson and South Africa’s president Jacob Zuma has spoken on the current political situation in Zimbabwe. This comes after the Zimbabwe Defence Forces took control of the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) and announced that they have taken over but deny that it is coup.
On behalf of SADC, President Zuma noted with great concern the unfolding political situation in Zimbabwe and called for calm and restraint. He expressed hope that there would be no unconstitutional changes of Government as that would be contrary to both SADC and African Union positions which is against a coup.
Zuma urged Zimbabwe’s Government and the Zimbabwe Defence Force to resolve the political impasse amicably and urged the Zimbabwean Defence Force to ensure that the maintenance of peace and security in the country is not compromised.  He said SADC will continue to closely monitor the situation and remains ready to assist where necessary to resolve the political impasse in keeping with established SADC Protocols and processes.

Zuma speaks on Zim political situation, hopes there is no unconstitutional change of Govt

The United States Embassy in Harare has announced that it will be closed to the public today due to ongoing uncertainty in Zimbabwe. This comes amid reports of army tanks being seen in and around Harare. There is speculation that the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) is attempting to take over from the Zanu-PF Government after issuing a warning telling them to stop purging war veterans from the party.
The announcement was made on Twitter and the United States says that it is monitoring the situation closely. Said the United States Embassy:

US Embassy closed due to "ongoing uncertainty" in Zim

Norton legislator Temba Mliswa has said that President Robert Mugabe must step down. He also claims that the military has taken over programming at the State broadcaster the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC).
Writing on micro blogging website Twitter, Mliswa said:

Mugabe must step down says Mliswa, claims military has taken over ZBC

Former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa is plotting to challenge President Robert Mugabe.
A source close to Mnangagwa who spoke to NewsDay said that the former VPs initial strategy was to challenge Mugabe at Zanu-Pf’s congress in December. The source however denied to divulge Mnangagwa’s Plan B now that he is wanted for treason in Zimbabwe. Said the source:
<blockquote>The idea was to have him challenge Mugabe at congress and have party structures deliver a deadly blow on the dynasty that has now become Zanu PF, from there he hoped to get the mandate to lead the party into the 2018 general elections.</blockquote>
The source also said that the treason charges are meant to block Mnangagwa from challenging Mugabe in an election. Said the source:
<blockquote>This is a plot to block him from constitutionally participating in the political sphere in the country. What treason is committed by calling on the will of the people and asking the people to register to vote?</blockquote>
The source also dismissed reports that Mnangagwa is plotting a coup de tat against Mugabe.

Mnangagwa plotting to challenge Mugabe, speaks on coup reports

Nigerian cleric, Temitope Balogun Joshua popularly known as TB Joshua, in an address to his followers at his Scoan church last Sunday predicted turmoil and civil war in an unnamed Southern African country. He said God had shown him that there were plans in the unnamed country to either kidnap or kill the President, Deputy President or the First Lady of that country.
This has raised speculation that the Nigerian cleric was referring to Zimbabwe where people expect the military to intervene following the dismissal of Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa from Government and Zanu-PF by President Robert Mugabe. Said TB Joshua:
<blockquote>Their (military) interest is to get rid of a President there, they will not tire, but their aim is to get rid of a President in that region in Southern Africa. I said it in January that a President will be kidnapped, Southern Africa people will remember if they are not going to misquote me, this time… I am saying a military, they are interested in embarrassing a President, that they kill him or kidnap him.</blockquote>

Zimbabwe’s former Home Affairs Minister Dumiso Dabengwa says a military coup cannot be ruled out in the country as some members of the Zimbabwe National Army are not happy about President Robert Mugabe’s dismissal of former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Dabengwa was speaking after launching the Dumiso Dabengwa Foundation in Bulawayo and said that it is unfortunate that Zimbabweans believe that a military coup can be the best way of removing Mugabe and Zanu-PF from power. Former ZIPRA combatant Retired Colonel Baster Magwizi concurred with Dabengwa but said the coup could be sparked by the sacking of one of the army generals. Magwizi said a coup would fix Zimbabwe’s socio-economic and political problems if the army handed over power to civilians in the shortest possible time through free and fair general elections.
However, political observers like Nkosikathi Moyo of the Zimbabwe Organisation for Youth in Politics and Claris Madhuku of the Platform for Youth Development said it is unlikely that the army would stage a coup.

Norton MP Temba Mliswa has denied that he is pushing for a coup against President Robert Mugabe following his suggestion that the Zimbabwe National Army should intervene.
Earlier today, Mliswa had called for the military to intervene and defend the legacy of Josiah Tongogara and Alfred Nikita Mangena. Mliswa’s call for the military to intervene caused a fellow Twitter user to ask for clarity concerning the legislator’s remarks. Mliswa responded that he is not pushing for a coup.
