A report from the United Kingdom-based investigative publication <a href="https://dugup.substack.com/p/diplomacy-paranoia-and-propaganda?selection=4ef7164b-a821-432d-a7f7-fca97401a774#:~:text=As%20early%20as%202020%2C%20ED%20received%20reports%20that%20claimed%20Moyo%20was%20a%20nice%20but%20ineffective%20DG">Dug Up</a> has claimed that Zimbabwe’s Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) considered eliminating opposition leader Nelson Chamisa in 2020, with the plan to frame the death as a consequence of the coronavirus.
According to the report, Chamisa, who narrowly lost the 2018 presidential election to President Emmerson Mnangagwa, was identified by CIO operatives as the primary threat to ZANU PF’s long-standing grip on power.
The report also alleges a plot within the agency to have former CIO Director-General Isaac Moyo removed from his post in 2020, just over two years after his appointment by Mnangagwa.
Moyo, who had previously served as Zimbabwe’s ambassador to South Africa, was reportedly seen as more of a diplomat than an intelligence operative.
According to the Dug Up report, Moyo’s subordinates advised Mnangagwa that his leadership of the CIO could jeopardize his presidency, and suggested that Moyo be relieved of his duties.
The report further claims that Moyo was criticized for his refusal to authorize the elimination of Chamisa and other political figures deemed “problematic”.
He was described by some within the agency as “too nice” to lead the CIO. Reads part of the report:

As early as 2020, Mnangagwa received reports that claimed Moyo was a nice but ineffective DG. One such report, dated February 15, 2021, claimed Moyo had turned down two projects/operations that suggested using the COVID-19 pandemic as a smokescreen to kill opposition candidates including Nelson Chamisa.
Dug Up understands the proposal came from the operative division of the CIO and suggested that the elimination of opposition actors could be hidden behind the pandemic.
The DG refused to authorise the operations. His juniors wrote a report saying he was too nice to lead the CIO.
Moyo found out and in a heated internal JOC meeting blasted his juniors. Provincial directors who sat in that meeting told Dug Up it was explosive and Isaac’s deputies flat out told him “You are not an Operative.”

According to Dug UP, amongst many reforms Moyo brought to the CIO, operatives reportedly did not take kindly to him demanding that they surrender their identity cards before knocking off to reduce cases of abuse.
Moyo is also reported to have demanded reports for any case of excess force and barred the carrying of weapons.
In January 2025, Mnangagwa removed Moyo from his post and replaced him with Fulton Mangwanya, who had been the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management’s director-general since August 1, 2017.

CIO Plotted To Eliminate Chamisa And Frame It As COVID-19 Death, Report Claims

United States President Joe Biden tested positive for COVID-19 while visiting Las Vegas, Nevada on Wednesday.
The 81-year-old president is currently self-isolating and experiencing mild symptoms, according to the White House.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that President Biden is fully vaccinated and has received his COVID-19 booster shots.
Despite his vaccination status, Biden was forced to cancel a scheduled speech in Las Vegas due to his positive test result.
As Biden boarded Air Force One to depart Las Vegas and return to Delaware to recover, reporters observed him climbing the stairs slowly, holding the railing tightly and pausing a few steps in and again towards the top.
This display of physical exertion raised concerns among observers, as the president’s health and fitness have been a subject of discussion, particularly in the context of his potential re-election campaign.
The president’s COVID-19 diagnosis comes as he faces increasing pressure from within his Democratic party to reconsider his plans to run for a second term in 2024.
At 81 years old, Biden would be the oldest president in U.S. history if he were to be re-elected, a factor that has fueled speculation about his physical and cognitive capabilities to serve a full four-year term.
The COVID-19 diagnosis comes at a crucial time for Biden, who has been losing ground in battleground states against Republican Donald Trump, who survived an assassination attempt on Saturday.
Biden, who had spent two nights in Las Vegas on the campaign trail, was diagnosed with COVID-19 shortly after his visit.
This illness comes just hours after the emergence of an excerpt from a recorded interview in which Biden said that he would only consider dropping out of the presidential race if he were told to do so due to a medical condition.
During an interview with Ed Gordon of BET News, Biden was directly asked if there was anything that would make him rethink his candidacy for a second term in the White House.

US President Biden Tests Positive For COVID-19

The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged governments to enhance COVID-19 surveillance and bolster hospital capacity for patient treatment.
This guidance comes in response to a rise in COVID-19 cases reported in several countries among pilgrims returning from the recent Hajj in Mecca.
In Zimbabwe, several public figures, including former footballer Norman Maroto and CCC Senator Murisi Zwizwai, have passed away due to flu-like illnesses in recent weeks.
There has been public speculation linking the increase in severe flu cases to coronavirus, a claim that the government has denied.
In a letter dated July 4, 2024, addressed to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Aspect Maunganidze, WHO country representative Desta Tiruneh emphasized the importance of ensuring sufficient oxygen availability in healthcare facilities to manage acute cases effectively. Wrote Tiruneh:

WHO has received a reported rise in a number of COVID-19 cases in some countries among pilgrims returning from the recent Hajj in Mecca. Countries with returning pilgrims carry a risk of a rise in new COVID-19 infections.
All countries concerned have been advised to heighten their readiness measures in case of a surge in cases.
The following measures are being proposed to countries for consideration to limit further spread of the virus:

<li>Heighten COVID-19 surveillance by screening at the points of entry to identify (symptomatic) infected persons.</li>

<li>Notify health facilities of the potential increase in cases and the need for a raised index of suspicion for COVID-19 especially in situations with limited testing capacity.</li>
<li>Ensure the availability of enough oxygen in the facilities for care of acute cases. Stock RDTs for diagnosis in facilities.</li>
<li>Undertake sufficient communication to the public to take personal responsibility and isolate themselves if they suspect to be infected and to seek care when ill.</li>
</ul>

WHO Urges Countries To Prepare For An Increase In COVID-19 Cases

Harare City’s Health Director, Dr. Prosper Chonzi, has reassured the public amid concerns of a resurgence of coronavirus infections in Harare.
This comes as there has been a notable increase in influenza cases, with over 1,300 confirmed infections reported so far this winter, predominantly in high-density suburbs such as Mbare, Glen View, Budiriro, Tafara, and Glen Norah.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.zbcnews.co.zw/featured/influenza-a-identified-as-cause-of-current-flu-surge/">ZBC News</a> on July 1st, Dr. Chonzi clarified that despite flu symptoms resembling those of COVID-19, testing has confirmed cases of Influenza A. He said:

We are indeed seeing several flue cases or flue-like cases throughout the country, particularly in Harare.
It’s not uncommon though that as you transition from the warm season into the cold season like we are doing right now you get an increase in flu-like symptoms.
There will be circulation of many viruses and some of those viruses are the ones that cause the flu.
We have isolated Influenza A type virus in most of the cases that we are seeing right now. Of course, the symptoms are COVID-19-like symptoms because most of us have experienced it before.
We have been testing, doing PCR testing to confirm whether or not we are dealing with the same strain of COVID-19, but what we are seeing is on the contrary, it still appears like what is circulating is the influenza virus.
We encourage people to still practice what we were teaching them the last time we were experiencing COVID-19.
Good personal hygiene keep warm, and seek medication early if you are unwell so that we avoid complications.
People have a role to play in terms of personal health, but as it is we have not confirmed that this is COVID-19 as we experienced it from 2019 to 2022.

Chonzi warned that young children (that is those under the age of 5), the elderly and those with underlying health conditions are most susceptible to severe flu complications. He said:

Influenza normally affects children, so those that are under five or under four years are mostly affected. Those who have comorbidities and the elderly are also severely affected.
If you are fit if you exercise regularly and if your immunity is okay you may have symptoms, but they are not as severe as the ones that you are seeing right now.
So, many individuals who are succumbing or experiencing severe illness likely have other underlying health conditions or may not be as resilient as they should be.
Children, on the other hand, because their immune systems are still developing, may also suffer from severe disease.
Similarly, the elderly and those who are immunocompromised are prone to experiencing severe illness as well.

It is caused by influenza viruses and typically manifests with symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, fatigue, and sometimes vomiting and diarrhoea. "Influenza A" Identified As Cause Of Surge In COVID-19-like Symptoms

The government has allayed fears of a coronavirus outbreak following a spike in cases of flu across the country over the past few weeks.
Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister, Jenfan Muswere, on Tuesday said the current rise in influenza-like illness in Zimbabwe is caused by the common cold associated with the winter season.
Addressing journalists at a post-Cabinet briefing in Harare on Tuesday, Muswere said the country has not recorded a single COVID-19 case in the last four weeks. He said:

Cabinet advises that the recent increase in influenza-like illness experienced in the last few weeks is due to a seasonal increase which is usually experienced in the country and region as we approach the winter season.
This is not a COVID-19 outbreak, but a seasonal phenomenon experienced during the winter season.
There were more influenza cases in the same period in 2023 (149,000) compared to 2024 (99,000). Zimbabwe has not recorded a single COVID-19 case in the last four weeks.
People are, however, encouraged to wash their hands, avoid large crowds, cover their mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, and stay at home when there are symptoms of the disease.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has urged members of the public to remain vigilant against COVID-19 by getting vaccinated, wearing masks, practising good hygiene, and maintaining social distancing.
In an interview with <a href="https://cite.org.zw/health-ministry-covid-19-still-a-threat-continue-precautions/">CITE</a>, Minister of Health and Child Care, Douglas Mombeshora, said that while coronavirus cases have decreased, the virus is still a threat. He said:

COVID-19 is still with us, and we must continue to observe the same precautions, including wearing masks.
</blockquote>
Mombeshora said the initial decline in COVID-19 cases was largely due to vaccination, but people have become complacent as vaccine uptake dropped significantly once cases went down. He added:

Deaths have decreased and are not as frequent as before, but we still see occasional COVID-related fatalities,” he remarked.

COVID-19 Still A Threat, Continue Wearing Masks - Govt

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) on Wednesday said voters would be subjected to COVID-19 regulations at polling stations on election day, reported <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/2023-elections/article/200015408/zec-invokes-covid-19-regulations">NewsDay</a>.
Although it is no longer mandatory for people to wear masks in public, ZEC said voters will be required to keep a safe distance and sanitise their hands.
ZEC officials said this during the second briefing of local and foreign election observers in Harare. Said ZEC chief elections officer Utloile Silaigwana:

As I indicated, from our logistics committee we have representatives from the Health Ministry in this committee.
There are no major health hazards but we need to take care. At the polling stations, you will be required to keep a safe distance, as usual, that’s basic.

People will not be expected to wear masks but there will be provisions for people to sanitise their hands or even the ballpoint pens in polling stations.

Voters To Observe COVID-19 Regulations On Polling Day

The Government has said it is no longer mandatory for people to wear face masks indoors, a requirement that has been in place since 2020 to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
However, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education says learners should continue wearing masks and practising social distancing.
The lifting of the mask mandate comes after the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Friday declared that COVID-19 was no longer a public health emergency of international concern.
National COVID-19 task force coordinator Dr. Agnes Mahomva said people are still encouraged to wear face masks in poorly ventilated areas. <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/masks-no-longer-mandatory/">She said:</a>

Cabinet specifically dropped the mandatory wearing of face masks but specifically recommended that we must still wear face masks if we are in a place that is at high risk of spreading COVID-19.
That is what Zimbabwe is doing and in line with the recommendations of WHO and in line with what we have learned in the country.
We must remain vigilant. Cabinet removed the mandatory aspect but strongly recommended that if you are at high risk, if you are in a crowded space, if you are in a poorly ventilated places, it recommends that you wear your masks in line with the new normal.
WHO announced that COOVID-19 is no longer a public emergency but if you go on the same statement, they go on to specifically to urge countries to remain vigilant as COVID-19 is not yet over.
Based on that, nations should remain vigilant and be vigilant in line with what we have seen and based on our experiences adopting a new normal.
New normal means we are not going back to where we were before COVID-19.
A new normal means institutionalising those best practices that we have been doing and successes that we have recommended and making sure that we remain vigilant.

Before the latest development, it was mandatory for everyone to wear masks in public places, including shops, churches, markets, and public transportation.
Failure to comply with the mask mandate resulted in fines or other penalties.

COVID-19: Wearing Of Masks No Longer Mandatory - Govt

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Friday, 05 May declared an end to the COronaVIrus Disease of 2019 (COVID-19) as a public health emergency more than three years after its original declaration.
WHO, however, stressed that it does not mean the disease is no longer a global threat.
The global health agency’s Emergency Committee met on Thursday and recommended WHO declare an end to the coronavirus crisis as a “public health emergency of international concern” which has been in place since 30 January 2020.
During a lengthy conference call to brief the press on the decision at the agency’s headquarters in Geneva, WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said:

It is therefore with great hope that I declare COVID-19 over as a global health emergency.
</blockquote>
According to WHO’s Coronavirus Dashboard which has collated key statistics since early in the pandemic, the cumulative cases worldwide now stand at 765 222 932, with deaths at 6 921 614.
As of 30 April, a total of more than 13.3 billion vaccine doses have been administered worldwide. Said Ghebreyesus:

It is still killing and it is still changing. The risk remains of new variants emerging that cause new surges in cases and deaths.
</blockquote>
According to WHO data, the COVID death rate has slowed from a peak of more than 100 000 people per week in January 2021 to just over 3 500 in the week to 24 April 2023.
This has been attributed to widespread vaccination, the availability of better treatments and a level of population immunity from prior infections.
WHO does not declare the beginning or end of pandemics, although it did start using the term for COVID in March 2020. WHO’s emergencies director Michael Ryan said:

WHO Declares End Of COVID-19 As Global Health Emergency

The government has announced a ban on parents’ and guardians’ visits to boarding schools in a move aimed at mitigating the spread of COVID-19.
Shungu High School in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Kwekwe">Kwekwe</a> in the Midlands province was forced to cancel its planned annual general meeting (AGM) and parents’ visit on Saturday, the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/parents-visits-to-boarding-schools-banned/">Chronicle</a> reported.
In a memo addressed to parents and guardians, acting school head, Sister V Morisi wrote:

Following the communication received from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education on the suspension of visits by parents to schools due to Covid-19 escalation, we therefore, postpone the scheduled AGM and visit tomorrow February 18 until further notice. New arrangements will be communicated soon.

The ministry’s director of communications and advocacy, Mr <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Taungana_Ndoro">Taungana Ndoro</a>, confirmed the development. He spoke to the Chronicle:

The ministry has with immediate effect banned parents and guardians from visiting learners at boarding schools in a move aimed at mitigating against the spread of COVID-19.
The ministry is not allowing visiting days by parents/guardians to schools. COVID-19 is escalating and footprints should be minimised. Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) are still in full force.

He said COVID-19 has resurfaced especially in boarding schools, adding that the ministry cannot afford to relax on the risk management measures. 
Health officials in the country have been calling on people to remain vigilant as fresh cases of the pandemic continue to be recorded.

Government Ban Parents' Visits To Boarding Schools

The World Health Organization (WHO) has updated its guidelines for preventing the spread of COVID-19, focusing on mask-wearing in community settings, treatment protocols and clinical management.
The organisation says people should continue to wear masks in public as this remains key to controlling the virus.
It also says patients who test negative on an antigen-based rapid test are no longer required to isolate.
In a Twitter post yesterday, the United Nations agency said members of the public can assess and reduce their risk of COVID-19 infection by

The latest development comes when the Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5, the most transmissible COVID-19 subvariant so far, is spreading quickly across the United States and was predicted on Friday to become Europe’s dominant strain in a matter of weeks.
China, where COVID-19 was first reported in China in 2019, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/hospitals-full-as-china-battles-with-new-covid-wave/">recorded a resurgence late last year</a> prompting authorities to impose a new wave of lockdowns and restrictions on freedom of movement in big cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, and Guangzhou.
This did not go well with citizens who <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/anti-zero-covid-protests-erupt-in-china/">protested against the move</a> forcing the government to relax the zero COVID-19 policy.

WHO Updates COVID-19 Guidelines

China stopped publishing daily figures for COVID-19 cases and deaths on Sunday 25 December 2022, ending a practice that began in early 2020.
The move came as Chinese cities are struggling with surging coronavirus cases after Beijing lifted its zero-COVID regime measures this month.
The sharp rise in new coronavirus infections has resulted in a stampede for medication and overflows at hospitals and crematoriums.
Last week China admitted the scale of the outbreak has become “impossible” to track following the end of mandatory mass testing, <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/12/25/china-to-stop-publishing-daily-covid-figures-of-cases-deaths">reported Al Jazeera</a>.
Announcing the decision to halt the publication of daily figures for COVID-19 cases and deaths on Sunday, the NHC said:
<blockquote>
From today, we will no longer publish daily information on the epidemic.
The Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] will publish information about the outbreak for reference and research purposes.
</blockquote>
However, the NHC did not offer an explanation for its decision to stop releasing daily COVID data.
It also did not specify the type or frequency of information to be published.
China has in the past been accused of suppressing the number of fatalities attributable to the coronavirus.

China Stops Publishing Daily COVID-19 Figures

Some Chinese hospitals are reportedly full as the Asian giant is battling a wave of infections that has hit the elderly.
China officially reported only a handful of deaths from the coronavirus after the government redefined the criteria by which COVID deaths are counted, according to AFP.
The publication visited some facilities on Friday AFP and witnessed several elderly and middle-aged patients sitting on sofas and lying on beds receiving IV drips, some coughing. A nurse said they all had COVID.
On Thursday evening, AFP visited a crematorium and witnessed 40 bodies being unloaded in two hours. The relatives of several of the deceased said the deaths were due to COVID.
One woman said her elderly relative, who was suffering from cold symptoms, had tested negative but died after they could not get an ambulance in time.
Under China’s new definition of COVID deaths, only those who die of respiratory failure, and not pre-existing conditions exacerbated by the virus, are counted.
That means many of the dead in Chongqing and across the country are no longer even being registered as coronavirus victims.
In response to the COVID-19 resurgence, China imposed a new wave of lockdowns and restrictions on freedom of movement in big cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, and Guangzhou.

Hospitals Full As China Battles With New COVID Wave

Zimbabwe recorded a slight increase in coronavirus cases in the past week, a Cabinet Minister has said.
Addressing the media during the post-Cabinet briefing on Tuesday, Information, Publicity, and Broadcast Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said the country recorded a total of 211 new cases during the week compared to 203 recorded the previous week. She said:

A total of 211 new cases including six deaths were recorded during the week, compared to 203 recorded the previous week.
For the week under review, there were 28 new admissions compared to 30 recorded the previous week.
Cabinet advises that the small spike in the number of new cases and deaths recorded during the week is of concern and calls for the country to remain vigilant.

Mutsvangwa said the recovery rate is 98 percent with 467 active cases.
On vaccination, she said 6 581 530 people received their first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine while 4 949 555 people were administered with second dose, and 1 274 040 received a third dose. Said Mutsvangwa:

Members of the public who are not vaccinated are encouraged to take advantage of this blitz to get vaccinated. 
In light of the upcoming festive season, Cabinet resolved on the following strategies in order to ensure that the pandemic is kept under check; that provincial teams strengthen their vaccination programme to protect citizens from severe disease and from death.
Communities and individuals should remain vigilant during this festive season and continue to protect themselves by getting fully vaccinated; washing hands with soap and running water; sanitising hands frequently; maintaining social distancing and avoiding crowded gatherings.

Zimbabwe Records Slight Increase In New Coronavirus Cases

Visitors to Zimbabwe during the festive season will still be subjected to an on-site COVID-19 test if they cannot produce a vaccination card with all three jabs, a government official has said.
Speaking to State media, the Chief Coordinator for the National Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic in the Office of the President and Cabinet, Agnes Mahomva, said:

As Government, we continue to strengthen our responses, we are very aware that as we go into the festive season a lot of visitors and returning residents are coming for holidays and visiting, so quite clearly some of those measures mean that we have to strengthen how we are responding at our ports of entry.
That still remains the latest Statutory Instrument-vaccination at ports of entry. 
The SI specifically states that one must be fully vaccinated, as well you do have to be tested if one is entering the country, it has not changed at all.
Port Health officers and teams are working flat out to strengthen the flow of clients as they come back into the country to ensure that people are not crowded in one place, are cleared fast enough and are supported and helped in whatever help they need. It is really important.

Mahomva implored people who are not yet vaccinated to get the jabs to avoid severe illness in the event that they contract the novel coronavirus. She said:

Everybody is aware, if you are fully vaccinated, your chances of getting severely ill and actually dying from COVID-19 are actually less so we are saying to everyone who is out there and has not been vaccinated, please go ahead and get vaccinated, it is for your protection, it is not about just adhering to Government rules but for your protection.

She said all the COVID-19 protocols remain the same throughout the country where people have to continue face masking, sanitising, and hand washing. Said Mahomva:

Wearing masks is still very much on. I know everybody is talking about other countries stopping and so on.
We have never been guided by what other countries do, we are guided by the science that we know protects our citizens and we encourage masking up during this festive season.
We know people gather to celebrate and this is where COVID-19 transmission is very high. So, people must protect themselves even on public transport.

Unvaccinated Travellers To Zim During Festive Season To Be Tested For Coronavirus

The government has said COVID-19 remains under control in the country with the recovery rate now at 98 per cent and active cases down to 493.
Addressing the media after Tuesday’s cabinet meeting, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister, Monica Mutsvangwa, said:
<blockquote>
The nation is advised that, as of 4 December 2022, the country’s cumulative cases since the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020 stood at 259 356, with 253 241 recoveries and 5 622 cumulative deaths.
The recovery rate was 98%, with 493 active cases having been reported. The scientific indicators show that the pandemic remains under control. The country, nonetheless, should remain vigilant against COVID-19.
</blockquote>
Mutsvangwa said the government will strengthen the enforcement of COVID-19 regulations during the Christmas and New Year period in all provinces. She said:

Enforcement of COVID-19 regulations will also be strengthened, especially during the festive season.
Regarding the national vaccination programme, Cabinet wishes to inform the nation that, as at 4 December 2022, a total of 6 574 434 first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine had been administered, while 4 924 009 people had received their second dose, and 1 253 395 their third dose. This translates to national coverage of 58.5%.
</blockquote>
She also said the Ministry of Health and Child Care will soon introduce a vaccination plan and electronic register.
Mutsvangwa said this will enable teams to easily identify and follow up with those who have not yet received their second or third dose. She added:
<blockquote>
This approach will not only help to increase the COVID-19 vaccine uptake but will also strengthen the under-five-year-old Expanded Programme on Immunisation.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that at least 90% of the world’s population now has some immunity to SARS-CoV-2 (the coronavirus that causes COVID-19), due to prior infection or vaccination.

COVID-19 Pandemic Remains Under Control - Govt

South Africa’s Health Department is warning of a spike in COVID-19 infections in four provinces.
Experts say cases are of less severe Omicron sub-variants.
In Gauteng, the number is rising, eNCA news reported citing Dr Harsha Somaroo, a Public Health Medicine Specialist at Wits University.
Somaroo said a higher number of tests have been performed in Gauteng since 2020. She said:

In terms of the recent increase in the number of Covid-19 cases, I think the one thing we think might be associated with it is the recent school holidays at the beginning of October.
I think usually the Covid cases —  when you consider the incubation time of the virus — it increases about five to ten days after transmission occurs so that’s when we start seeing the increase in the numbers.
As much as we’re slightly concerned about the increase, the numbers are low-level increases and we’ll continue to monitor it.

South Africa: COVID-19 Spike In 4 Districts

The World Bank has approved a loan of 454.4 million euros ($474.4 million) to help South Africa fund COVID-19 vaccine purchases, the bank and South Africa’s National Treasury said in a statement.
South Africa has recorded the most coronavirus cases and deaths on the African continent, with over 3.9 million confirmed cases and more than 101 000 deaths. 
Acting Treasury director-general Ismail Momoniat said in the statement:

The loan forms part of government efforts to reduce debt service costs by making use of cheaper sources of funding through multilateral development banks, whilst supporting the health system to respond to Covid-19 through the roll-out of vaccines, critical research, and treatment measures.

Zimbabwe Coronavirus/ COVID-19 Update: 01 October 2021

Schools in Mberengwa have recorded Covid-19 cases among students according to a report released by the Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ).
In a report dated 14 September, PTUZ President Takavafira Zhou said 40 cases were confirmed at Masase High School, 60 at Chegato High. Zhou said students at Masase, Chegato, Mnene and Msume as well as some neighbouring schools should be tested in order to contain the spread of Covid-19.

Mberengwa Schools Hard Hit by Covid 19
14 September 2021
Indeed several schools in Zimbabwe have recently witnessed escalated cases of covid 19 following reopening of schools without adequate preparations to combat it. A survey by Ptuz showed that 98% of schools were not prepared and 2% of largely private schools, were prepared to open. However, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education officials claimed their so called standard operation procedures were so solid that they would combat covid 19.
We therefore have seen several schools such as Nyamuka Primary School, Kriste Mambo High, Tongwe High, Neshangwe High and Bulu High witnessing cases of covid 19 among pupils. However, there is no doubt that Mberengwa District is the most hard hit area with 40 cases confirmed at Masase High School, 60 at Chegato High. Impeccable sources have also pointed to 7 covid positive out of tests conducted on 12 students showing signs of covid at Msume today, and 8 at Mnene High School. Much as it is difficult to point with certainty the source of the escalation of covid pandemic in Mberengwa in particular and Zimbabwe in general, the mere conglomeration of students from various areas experiencing covid cases such as Harare, Bulawayo and South Africa seem to be the source. Chegato, Masase, Msume and Mnene are the best schools in Mberengwa with previous national records and therefore attract students from across the country and regionally. The accessibility of the area to South Africa with some business people ordering goods from South Africa for sell in Mberengwa is another possible source of covid. What is worrisome is that these schools have no adequate testing kits to test all students and some students are still awaiting the arrival of testing kits.
There is need to test all students at Masase, Chegato, Mnene and Msume in particular as well as some neighbouring schools in order to contain the spread of covid 19. The schools need urgent assistance in terms of covid abatement equipment, managenent of quarantine areas, toiletries, food and feeding of quarantined students, health education, provision of water, and psychological therapy. A government intervention to urgently assist affected schools is needed rather than leaving school heads and teachers to navigate across challenges. It is sad that Ministry of Education officials are now in hibernation when in essence they should be assessing the operating environment at the most affected schools and advicing on how best to ameliorate the challenges faced at the schools. Chegato and Masase are the most affected where even day scholars are also quarantined and the schools have responsibility to feed them yet they had not paid for boarding facilities.

Zimbabwe Coronavirus/ COVID-19 Update: 14 September 2021

Kukurigo reports that popular musicians Jah Prayzah and Killer T were detained at the Robert Mugabe International Airport upon their return to the country after they performed at a G40-attended party in Cape Town.
The all-white party in SA was apparently thrown by late Robert Mugabe’s son-in-law Adam Molai. 
The two were accused of having suspicious COVID-19 certificates.
The 2 had to undergo PCR tests before being let go, 4 hours after landing around 8 PM.
The two performed at a 50th birthday celebration for Adam Molai. The event was attended by some exiled G40 members, Saviour Kasukuwere, Patrick Zhuwao and Walter Mzembi who later posted videos of the performance on social media. Together with Jonathan Moyo and others, the G40 were a group of politicians who were opposed to Emmerson Mnangagwa succeeding the now late Robert Mugabe.
The group’s leaders were exiled when a Military coup ousted Robert Mugabe in November 2017.
The group is reported to still have some influence within Zanu-PF and the general political landscape in Zimbabwe.
Posting on his Twitter page, Jah Prayzah explained his presence at the party:

Just a few days following the performance, Temba Mliswa, an independent politician close to the Mnangagwa family, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/temba-mliswa-accuses-jah-prayzah-of-sleeping-with-married-women/">publicly accused Jah Prayzah of bedding married women.</a>

Jah Prayzah and Killer T Detained Following G40 Performance

President Cyril Ramaphosa said yesterday that South Africans may soon be required to produce proof of vaccination against Covid-19 to gain access to public spaces.
The requirement is generally referred to as a “Vaccine Passport” or “Vaccine Certificate” and has been considered by several countries globally as a way of persuading people to get vaccinated.
Said Ramaphosa in a televised address where some COVID-19 restrictions were eased:

We will also be providing further information on an approach for vaccine passports, which can be used as evidence of vaccination for various purposes and events, so that people are able to demonstrate that they’ve been vaccinated. The department of health is looking at a variety of mechanisms in other countries to do it electronically through cellphones or other forms of demonstration.”

According to Ramaphosa, the vaccine passport will come into effect soon and South Africans will be advised accordingly.
The announcement comes as England announced <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/england-ditches-plans-to-introduce-covid-19-vaccine-passports-for-access-into-nightclubs-and-crowded-events/">the dropping of such plans for its population</a>. England’s health secretary Sajid Javid told BBC that the government has halted plans to introduce vaccine passports for access into nightclubs and large events.
Countries and regions that have vaccines passports include the EU, Israel, and China.

South Africa Plans To Introduce Vaccine Passport

England’s health secretary Sajid Javid told BBC that the government has halted plans to introduce vaccine passports for access into nightclubs and large events.
The plan was scheduled to be introduced at the end of September 2021. It was however criticised by venues and MPs. Javid told BBC “We shouldn’t be doing things for the sake of it.”. Vaccines Minister Nadhim Zahawi had defended the introduction of Covid-19 vaccination passports as the “best way” to keep the night industry open.
Under the scheme, people would have been required to show proof – whether of double vaccination, a negative Covid test or finishing self-isolating after a positive PCR test – in order to gain entry to clubs and other crowded events.
Explaining why England had ditched the plan to introduce vaccine passports, Javid said Government had not given in to criticism from its own backbenchers. He said the passports were not needed because of other things in the “wall of defence” including high vaccine uptake, testing, surveillance and new treatments.
Meanwhile, Scotland will introduce vaccine passports for over-18s for entry to nightclubs and many large events from October.

England Ditches Plans To Introduce Covid-19 Vaccine Passports For Access Into Nightclubs And Crowded Events

The Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA) has reported that some residents who were seeking COVID-19 vaccinations were turned away by health personnel at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mabvuku">Mabvuku</a> Satellite Clinic who said they were overwhelmed.
The association reports that a group of more than 30 residents had come to get their second dose of Sinopharm vaccine with some coming as far as Eastview to get vaccinated.
An unnamed man who was part of the group that was turned away said:
<blockquote>_We were told by a nurse that they are short-staffed because the responsible nurse for vaccination had no bus fare to come to work and we can come tomorrow._</blockquote>
Another senior citizen lamented that she had to walk more than 5 kilometres only to be told to go back home. Said the devastated old lady:
<blockquote>_I stay in East view l woke up around 4 am to come to the Council clinic to access my second dose only to be told there are no nurses this is unacceptable._</blockquote>
Scores of health caregivers deserted Harare City Council last year citing potential exposure to the coronavirus and poor remuneration.
According to the City of Harare Health Department, the city has two hundred and forty-two nurse vacancies after the former employees resigned en masse.
The development comes when Zimbabwe is targeting to vaccinate sixty per cent of the total population to achieve herd immunity.
CHRA calls on the local authority to improve the working conditions of health personnel and the government to provide health grants to the local authority in order to improve health services.

Overwhelmed Clinic Turns Away COVID-19 Vaccine-Seeking Residents

Three teachers at Karoi schools succumbed to COVID-19 on Thursday last week as Zimbabwe is experiencing a coronavirus resurgence.
Karoi is among several districts in Mashonaland West province that have been declared COVID-19 hotspots by the Health ministry and is under localised lockdown.
One of the deceased teachers, Goodluck Tobaiwa Chambe, of Chikangwe High School was a principal marking supervisor under the Combined Science section.
Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) secretary-general Raymond Majongwe said it was sad that Chambe died without getting his dues for marking last year’s ZIMSEC examinations. Said Majongwe:
<blockquote>_We are not happy that the late Karoi teacher (Chambe) was yet to get paid by Zimsec. He never got his dues and this is how bad it is as people who offered services, but national institutions renege on making payments. The impact of COVID-19 is obviously felt as he could have used the funds to buy protective equipment and to get medical attention. This is a tragedy._</blockquote>
Zimsec public relations manager Nicky Dlamini consoled the Chambe family confirming examination markers were yet to receive their allowances. Dlamini said:
<blockquote>_We are sorry for the family’s loss. Let me confirm that the payments for teachers, who marked Zimsec examinations, are currently being processed. Those that marked language papers were paid in May, the next batch of payments is being dispatched._
_COVID-19 affected many systems, not only Zimsec, but globally. It is unfortunate, but the payments were made in batches._</blockquote>
Majongwe said more teachers were likely to succumb to the pandemic and appealed to the government to immediately put in place measures to protect them.
He added that PTUZ views the “premature” reopening of schools as criminal as the move has resulted in the loss of lives.

3 Karoi Teachers Succumb To COVID-19

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) clashed with some illegal beer sellers who were resisting arrest and charging towards the officers.
This was revealed in a police statement that urged members of the public to comply with members of the public enforcing COVID-19 regulations after some police officers.
In a statement, ZRP said a police crack team enforcing compliance with Covid-19 regulations as well as monitoring beer outlets in Chemagamba, Chinhoyi arrested a beer night club owner, Kombo Museneka (54) for operating without a liquor licence and violating Covid-19 regulations.
The statement further reads:
<blockquote>-The Police team found approximately 50 patrons drinking beer inside and outside the nightclub and ordered the beer outlet to be closed._
_This did not go well with some of the patrons who charged towards the Police and the Police threw a tear smoke canister to disperse the crowd. Investigations are underway._</blockquote>

Some observers, however, said the police was selectively applying the law as ruling ZANU PF gatherings are never disrupted.
Others said the police had found a weapon in COVID-19 to terrorise the opposition and members of the public.
This view echoes a report published earlier this year by human rights watchdog, Amnesty International which suggested that the government had killed a handful and brutalised many in the guise of implementing COVID-19 regulations.
Thousands have been arrested for violating COVID-19 regulations since the outbreak of the coronavirus last year March.
