Mutare residents have called upon Mutare City Council to consider decentralising the COVID-19 voluntary testing centres to places of residence.
Mutare Residents and Ratepayers’ Association’s Mildred Muzanechita told Business Times that it has become difficult for residents to access the designated centres due to the lockdown imposed by the government to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Said Muzanechita:
<blockquote>As residents, we would have appreciated a situation where the council has other centres all over the city and places of residence.
As it is, it is difficult to travel to the established centres given the movement limitations set by the government.</blockquote>
The City of Mutare in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Childcare embarked on COVID-19 testing for willing residents beginning last week.
Currently, the testing is done at three centres, Queens Hall in the city, Sakubva Beit Hall and Dangamvura Beit Hall.
Mutare City Council spokesperson Spren Mtiwi said authorities are currently engaged with the issue and as soon as some logistical issues addressed, more COVID-19 centres will be rolled out close to where people reside.

Mutare Residents Push For More Covid Testing Centres

John Magufuli has questioned COVID-19 test kits after a goat a paw paw tested positive for the novel coronavirus, Aljazeera reports.
Tanzania reportedly took samples from a goat, a sheep and a paw paw and assigned them human names and tested them, the samples from a goat and a paw paw tested positive for the virus.
Magufuli revealed this at an event in Chato in northwestern Tanzania yesterday when he said:
<blockquote>There is something happening. I said before we should not accept that every aid is meant to be good for this nation.
I have already written to Madagascar’s president and we will soon dispatch a plane to fetch the medicine so that Tanzania can also benefit from it.</blockquote>
Magufuli made controversial remarks when he said people should pray that the virus goes away.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Community and Small and Medium Enterprises Development Sithembiso Nyoni said that only small to medium enterprises (SMEs) involved in the manufacturing of PPEs, detergents, soap, masks, gloves and those in the food chain are exempted from observing the lockdown measures.
Nyoni added that the exempted SMEs should operate with skeletal staff until they undergo mandatory COVID-19 testing. She said:
<blockquote>The included SMEs are those who are involved in the manufacturing of PPEs, detergents, soap, masks, gloves and those in the food chain.
There are other SMEs providers that include the producers of cooking oil, these are all included in the initiative.
In regard to their exemption, the main purpose is to ensure that we do not want to run out of soap and detergents in this pandemic. We also do not want to run out of mealie-meal and thus millers are included in the system.</blockquote>
Minister Nyoni urged SMEs to liaise with provincial health officers for employees to undergo the mandatory COVID-19 testing for frontline workers which is currently underway.
