Zimbabwe has received US$6.68 million from the World Bank to enhance its response measures in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic under the Zimbabwe Covid Emergency Response Project (ZCERP).
The bank has extended nearly US$1 billion funding assistance to Zimbabwe since independence, including commercial loans which have been temporarily suspended over pending arrears.
Finance and Economic Development Minister Mthuli Ncube said at the signing ceremony in Harare Wednesday the gesture by the Breton Woods institution symbolised strong partnership and deepened cooperation with the worldwide lender. He said:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the World Bank executive directors for approving the grant of US1,575 million from the Energy Sector Management Assistance (ESMAP) on Thursday, 3 March, 2023 which is co-financed by US$5 million from the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Trust Fund (HEPRTF).
The coming into effect of this grant will go a long way in supporting Government efforts in the deployment and management of Covid – 19 vaccines and strengthening related health systems capacity.

Minister Ncube said the support came at a time when the Government has already spent over US$122 million on the procurement of vaccines from various countries.
He said the Government was committed to continuing mobilising additional resources to ensure the target population was fully vaccinated and livelihoods were protected.
He added the Government also appreciated the complimentary support received from development partners amounting to US$150 million towards mitigating the negative impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
World Bank country director Ms Mara Warwick said the ZCERP was introduced as an additional layer to the support the World Bank had been providing to the health sector through the Health Sector Development Support Project (HSDSP) and the Zimbabwe Idai Recovery Project (ZIRP).

World Bank Avails US$6.7M Grant For Zimbabwe's Response To COVID-19

Zimbabweans residing in rural areas have said they feel neglected by the government in the vaccination programme despite the rise of COVID-19 infections and deaths countrywide.
Villagers in Plumtree, Matabeleland South, told The Citizen Bulletin that even information dissemination was lacking. Said Meissa Khupe:

I have never seen health workers moving around in my ward disseminating information about the vaccine.
I only get to hear about vaccination on foreign radio stations and it would be about shortages of vaccines in urban areas.
I feel we are neglected in rural areas. Maybe it’s because we are viewed as not contributing much to the economy of this country.
It hurts to hear on the radio that vaccine doses are being delivered in Harare and other parts of the country. Why are vaccines not available at my nearest clinic?
</blockquote>
The Matabeleland Institute for Human Rights (MIHR) conducted a survey and observed that in “all 20 communities of Insiza, Gwanda, Mangwe, and Matobo Districts that were sampled and surveyed,” there was no COVID-19 vaccine in local clinics for over a month now.
In some clinics, they had the second dose and not the first one.
This comes as Zimbabwe is aiming to vaccinate 60 per cent of the population to achieve herd immunity for things to return to normality.
Itai Rusike, Community Working Group on Health’s executive director said vaccine equity is very important in fighting the coronavirus.

COVID-19 Vaccines: Rural Dwellers Feel Neglected

Zimbabwe is expected to take delivery of 1.5 million Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccines in three batches within the next three days.
The first consignment was scheduled to arrive in Harare on Thursday afternoon while the last has been set for Saturday.
The Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) confirmed the expected delivery of the vaccines in a statement. MoHCC said:

We are receiving another 1.5 million vaccines that were purchased by the Government of Zimbabwe.
They are coming in three batches and they will boost the country’s vaccination drive.
</blockquote>
Finance and Economic Development Permanent Secretary Mr George Guvamatanga also confirmed the purchase of the said vaccines.
The first batch (516 800 shots) were expected to be delivered at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport today at 2.35 pm, 528 000 tomorrow at 12.35 pm and the last batch of 455 200 is scheduled to be delivered at 2.35 pm on Saturday.
COVID-19 jabs are being administered free of charge and as of Wednesday, 18 August 2021, 2 193 346 people had received the first jab while 1 348 374 had received their second.

1.5 Million More Sinopharm COVID-19 Doses Coming

Zimbabwe will take delivery of 500 000 more doses of COVID-19 vaccines this Saturday and an additional 2 million doses from China at the end of this month, Government has said.
This comes as coronavirus infections and deaths have increased alarmingly in recent days resulting in a stampede for the lifesaving jabs.

At a post-cabinet media briefing in Harare Tuesday, Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said Vice President and Health minister Constantino Chiwenga had briefed Cabinet on the expected arrival of the drugs from China. She said:
<blockquote>Two million doses of vaccines are expected in the country from China by end of June whilst 500 000 doses are expected in the country this Saturday.</blockquote>
Mutsvangwa also revealed that Government’s vaccination programme will see all border posts being prioritised for vaccination.

All Zimbabweans between the ages of 18 and 70 are being vaccinated for free at vaccination centres dotted across the country.
Zimbabwe has been receiving the Sinopharm and Sinovac vaccines from China since earlier this year.
The country also received some donations of the Russian-developed Sputnik V vaccine and India’s Covaxin.

Meanwhile, new coronavirus infections continue to rise with the Ministry of Health recording 826 new cases and 17 deaths on Thursday and 911 news cases and 12 deaths yesterday.
