South African President Cyril Ramaphosa responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats in his annual speech on Thursday, saying South Africa would “not be bullied.”
This was seen as a reaction to Trump’s decision to cut all funding to South Africa over a new law that allows the government to take land without compensation in certain situations.
Trump called the law a “massive human rights violation” and announced on February 3, 2025, that all future U.S. funding to South Africa would be suspended until a full investigation into the law is completed.
Furthermore, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he would not attend the upcoming G20 meeting in South Africa, scheduled for February 20-21, 2025, because of the land expropriation law.
In his speech, Ramaphosa said that South Africa would stand firm and not be intimidated. He said:

In a <a href="https://www.thepresidency.gov.za/node/8738">statement</a> to the nation on Monday, February 3, President Ramaphosa said the soldiers’ deaths occurred in violation of a ceasefire agreement between the DRC and Rwanda, a deal that had been brokered by Angolan President João Lourenço. In the wake of the tragic killing of our soldiers, some have questioned South Africa’s presence in the eastern DRC. Some have said that we have no business being there.
But violence and conflict in Africa is the business of all Africans. The humanitarian, economic and social effects of these conflicts are felt across borders and regions.
Instability in any part of the continent affects the prospects for growth and development across the continent.
For a lasting peace to be secured in the eastern DRC, there must be an immediate end to hostilities and a ceasefire that must be respected by all.
South Africa’s participation in the DRC is subject to the SAMIDRC mission, which has operational timeframes and an end date.
The mission will wind down in accordance with the implementation of various confidence-building measures and when the ceasefire we have called for takes root.
As this happens, securing the safety of our troops remains paramount. The situation in the areas where our troops are stationed remains highly volatile.
We are making every effort to ensure that our soldiers are well-equipped and sufficiently supported during the mission.

Ramaphosa said that a ceasefire is a crucial prerequisite for peace talks, which must involve all parties to the conflict, whether state or non-state actors and regardless of their nationality, whether Congolese or non-Congolese.
He expressed support for the UN Security Council’s call for the reversal of territorial gains made by the M23 rebel group and the withdrawal of Rwandan forces from the DRC. He concluded:

Trump made this declaration on his Truth Social platform, saying funding would be halted until a full investigation into the matter is completed.
In his response on Monday morning, Ramaphosa posted on his verified X page, saying he was eager to engage with the Trump administration on South Africa’s land reform policy and issues of bilateral interest.

Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame has accused South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa and government officials of “lying” and “distorting” discussions between the two leaders in a statement to South Africans on Wednesday.
Kagame’s response came after Ramaphosa shared a statement on X (formerly Twitter) accusing Rwanda of involvement in the deaths of 13 South African peacekeeping troops in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
He blamed the rebel group M23 which is said to be funded by Rwanda, and Rwandan troops for the killing of South African soldiers.
In his statement, Ramaphosa said the fighting was “the result of an escalation by the rebel group M23 and Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) militia engaging the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) and attacking peacekeepers from the SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC).”
In a media briefing on Wednesday, South Africa’s Minister of Defence, Angie Motshekga, said that Ramaphosa had warned Rwanda that firing on South African troops would be considered an act of war.
Kagame confirmed on his official X page that he and Ramaphosa had held two conversations earlier this week, including one just hours before the statement.
He responded to Ramaphosa’s claims, labelling them as distortions, attacks, and outright lies. Wrote Kagame:

What has been said about these conversations in the media by South African officials and President Ramaphosa himself contains a lot of distortion, deliberate attacks, and even lies.
If words can change so much from a conversation to a public statement, it says a lot about how these very important issues are being managed.
A few important clarifications for the record:
1. The Rwanda Defence Force is an army, not a militia.
2. SAMIDRC is not a peacekeeping force, and it has no place in this situation. It was authorized by SADC as a belligerent force engaging in offensive combat operations to help the DRC Government fight against its own people, working alongside genocidal armed groups like FDLR which target Rwanda, while also threatening to take the war to Rwanda itself.
3. SAMIDRC displaced a true peacekeeping force, the East African Community Regional Force, and this contributed to the failure of the negotiation processes.
4. President Ramaphosa has never given a “warning” of any kind, unless it was delivered in his local language which I do not understand. He did ask for support to ensure the South African force has adequate electricity, food and water, which we shall help communicate.
5. President Ramaphosa confirmed to me that M23 did not kill the soldiers from South Africa, FARDC did.
6. If South Africa wants to contribute to peaceful solutions, that is well and good, but South Africa is in no position to take on the role of a peacemaker or mediator. And if South Africa prefers confrontation, Rwanda will deal with the matter in that context any day.

President Cyril Ramaphosa and King Misuzulu were the main guests at the ceremony, which featured a 12-meter statue of Shaka on Thursday, November 7.
The new statue replaces a previous artwork that faced criticism for depicting the AmaZulu monarch as a “herdboy.”

During the altercation, the woman appeared to slap one of the female police officers. A man in a suit then intervened, restraining her and guiding her away from the front of the podium.
It has not yet been established who the woman’s target was.

The DA’s opposition to the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill was, in retrospect, a warning shot. When Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube boycotted its signing ceremony in September this year, the party’s defiance of government reforms was laid bare.
The BELA Bill aims to centralise school policies, regulate home schooling, lower the starting school age, and ban corporal punishment, promoting inclusivity.
Gwarube’s absence was a clear stand against the bill’s intent to centralise certain powers within the Department of Basic Education and promote inclusivity.
Framing the bill as an infringement on provincial rights, the DA positioned itself as a defender of decentralised authority.
This boycott marked the DA’s strategic effort to challenge the ANC-led government’s authority, positioning itself with conservative interests and setting a tone of resistance to transformative policies.

Schutte urged Ramaphosa to take decisive action against what she describes as “insubordination,” asserting that Steenhuisen and Schreiber must not be allowed to operate unchecked.
She contended that their actions warrant immediate dismissal to protect South Africa’s sovereignty and restore the integrity of its foreign policy.
Schutte warned that failing to act would set a dangerous precedent, signalling an alarming tolerance for defiance that could further weaken governmental cohesion and diminish the country’s standing on the global stage.

The country’s first GNU was established in 1994 to promote nation-building and inclusivity from a racially divided past during a period of political transition following the end of apartheid.
In a statement on Monday, 24 June, Ramaphosa said the GNU should drive a programme that improves the lives of all South Africa’s people rather than focus on who gets which ministerial position among the parties. He said:

South Africans made clear with their votes in last month’s elections that they want their elected representatives to put aside narrow interests and work together to build the country.
To do so, the GNU cannot be preoccupied with jockeying for positions, tussles over appointments or squabbles within and between parties.
The success of the GNU will be measured by the extent to which we are prepared to focus not on who will govern, but on how we will govern, together.

GNU Must Put South Africans' Interests First - Ramaphosa

South Africa and ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa’s leadership is now on shaky ground after he reportedly lost his grip on the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
<a href="https://www.iol.co.za/news/politics/just-in-president-cyril-ramaphosa-has-lost-his-grip-on-anc-nec-amid-gnu-talks-with-da-bc907e0a-263f-42c1-9dcd-53d60da0fe16">IOL</a> reported “highly placed sources within the NEC” as saying there has been a significant shift in the balance of power away from Ramaphosa following a move to push through an ANC-DA coalition government.
The ANC’s NEC met last week to discuss its various options for forming a new government.
The ANC-DA coalition was defeated, with the NEC favouring a more measured Government of National Unity (GNU).
However, some ANC officials are reportedly frustrating parties like the EFF and MKP out of any discussions.
The ANC failed to win an outright majority in the 29 May National and Provincial elections and received 40.18% support.
Speaking to IOL, political analyst Professor Sipho Seepe said Ramaphosa failed to deliver and should resign. He said:

Any leader who has any integrity will not be forced to step down from the position. The election outcomes were disastrous… Ramaphosa is obsessed with the idea of being a president.
</blockquote>
Seepe said if an ANC-DA coalition was pushed through, it could spell the end of Ramaphosa in the ANC.
He argued that it was a wrong move for the president to even consider talks with the DA after it had opposed many of its policies over the years including the recent signing of the National Health Insurance (NHI) bill. He said:

Don’t be surprised when people take you as the enemy. The DA has opposed many policies of the ANC, so why go with a party that has always pushed you around?
This is the same party that suggested it would take further steps on the Phala Phala matter.

The growing influence of ANC Chairperson Gwede Mantashe, Deputy President Paul Mashatile, and Nomvula Mokonyane over the NEC is being viewed as a sign of the shifting power dynamic within the party. Said a source:

Ramaphosa has lost the NEC and this is going to prove detrimental to him in the next few weeks or months. The push for a DA coalition by those loyal to the president was widely rejected by the NEC.

Reports at the weekend suggested that the ANC NEC was concerned that those close to Ramaphosa were trying to engineer “side deals” with the DA.
The meeting, apparently widely rejected a coalition with the DA and was said to be in favour of an ANC, IFP, EFF, and PA coalition. Said a source:

The NEC could not bring itself to work with the DA and preferred the so-called “black pact” grouping. Ideologically it makes sense for the ANC.

Another IOL source said the sense from the NEC was that if the ANC-DA coalition was pushed, it will end in tears for Ramaphosa. Said the source:

The NEC will recall him if this line continues. The last meeting was a clear indicator of this. In fact, the GNU could very well have a different president in a couple of months. That is how fluid the situation is right now.

Ramaphosa Loses Grip On ANC NEC Amid GNU Talks With DA | Report

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday said that the final announcement of the 2024 National and Provincial election results represented “a victory for our democracy, for our constitutional order and for all the people of South Africa.”
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) announced the results on Sunday evening despite threats of violence made by former president Jacob Zuma on Saturday night.
Zuma, who now leads the Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, on Saturday night threatened violence should the IEC “rush” to declare the results on Sunday amid 500 objections.
In his address at the IEC Results Operation Centre, at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Johannesburg, yesterday, Ramaphosa said political parties should respect the wishes of the people who participated in the election. 
Ramaphosa praised the IEC for conducting what he described as a successful election that has been free, fair and peaceful. He said:

The Independent Electoral Commission has, despite many challenges, once more acquitted itself with excellence, professionalism and integrity.

The governing ANC won considerably fewer than half the seats in South Africa’s National Assembly.
It won 159 of 400 seats, the country’s electoral commission said. In the previous parliament, it had 230 seats.
The DA increased from 84 to 87, while the newly-formed MK Party won 58 seats. Julius Malema’s EFF lost five seats, from 44 to 39.

Ramaphosa Accepts Election Results, Says They Reflect The Will Of South Africans

The United States Congress has received a bill calling for a comprehensive review of the bilateral relationship between the United States and South Africa. The bill was introduced by US Republican Congressman John James and Democratic Congressman Jared Moskowitz in response to the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2024/01/29/icj-rules-in-favor-of-palestinians-protection-from-genocide-urges-israel-to-comply/">International Court of Justice’s suggestion that Israel</a> may have committed acts of genocide against Gaza, <a href="https://mg.co.za/politics/2024-02-10-breaking-us-congress-introduces-bill-to-review-relations-with-south-africa-following-politically-motivated-icj-case/">M&amp;G</a> reported. If passed, the bill could potentially impact South Africa’s eligibility for the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). However, it is important to note that the bill still needs to undergo discussions and gain approval from Congress.

Additionally, the bill mandates that an unclassified report justifying this determination must be provided to the relevant congressional committees.
The bill accuses the African National Congress (ANC) of acting contrary to its publicly declared policy of nonalignment in international affairs. It alleges that the South African government has a history of aligning itself with malign actors such as Hamas and the Russian Federation. The bill argues that the ANC’s support for Hamas dates back to 1994, when the party first came into power and consistently accused Israel of practicing apartheid. The bill stated:

US Congress Considering Reviewing US-South Africa Relationship After Accusing Israel Of Genocide

The office of South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, has asked former Remgro director Thabi Leoka to clarify her qualifications after allegations emerged that she does not hold a PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics (LSE).
Leoka, who serves on various company boards, including Anglo American Platinum, has denied the reports and plans to take legal action. She told 702 in an interview on Tuesday:

 I do hold a PHD in Economics from the university. I did economic history and economics
</blockquote>
She said the reason people have not been able to find her PhD record is because they have been using the wrong names for the search, she said. According to a government gazette published on 29 March 2018, Leoka did change her name from Bathabile Leoka to Thabi Leoka. She said:

They didn’t use my full name, without using the right names, the school wouldn’t verify or confirm a name that is incomplete or not on their system. I changed my name with Home Affairs.

Leoka was appointed as an independent non-executive director of Remgro in March 2023 and chose not to be renominated for the position in December of the same year due to health reasons. She has also been a member of the Presidential Economic Advisory Council since 2019.
Commentators say it’s unfortunate that Thabi Leoka was asked by the South African Presidency to prove her PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics (LSE) after she worked as an advisor to President Cyril Ramaphosa for years. Zimbabwean journalist, Hopewell Chin’ono says the Presidency should have checked her qualifications before hiring her. He argues that the President has access to information through intelligence services, so verifying qualifications would be easy. 
The Presidency claims that the advisory council is a non-statutory body, and formal vetting is not required as the members volunteer their time and are not employed or remunerated by the state, <a href="https://www.citizen.co.za/news/presidency-responds-to-thabi-leoka-phd-saga/">The Citizen</a> reported. However, in the interest of transparency, the Presidency has requested that Leoka address the issue regarding her qualifications.

South African Presidency Asks Economist Thabi Leoka To Prove She Holds A PhD From UK

Former President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, has announced that he will not campaign for the ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), in the upcoming elections. Instead, he will vote for the uMkhontho weSizwe (MK) party, which is registered with the Electoral Commission of SA. Zuma made this announcement through a statement read by his daughter Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, as he was not feeling well.
Zuma expressed his dissatisfaction with the current state of the ANC, stating that it has changed from the party he joined 64 years ago. However, he mentioned that he could never completely leave the ANC and would always consider himself a member. He expressed disappointment in the practices introduced by his successor, President Cyril Ramaphosa, which he believes are different from the traditional values of the ANC. He listed a long list of complaints. Zuma-Sambudla read on her father’s behalf:

I therefore wish to announce that in 2024, I will vote for the UmkhontoWeSizwe (MK)Party. It has already been registered with the IEC with my knowledge and blessings, in response to various pleas expressed to me by some religious leaders, traditional leaders, former combatants and other leaders in society. I call on all South Africans to join me in taking the important step and to vote for the MK Party and any other progressive party which seeks total liberation and the return of our land to its rightful owners, the African people. Zuma stated that he has been holding meetings with various leaders, including political parties, to unite the historically oppressed in South Africa. He said they are discussing the formation of a Patriotic Front and a voting bloc after the 2024 election to pursue a minimum consensus program of no more than 10 points of agreement to address the present crisis. Zuma said the ultimate goal is to achieve total liberation from colonialism by uniting Africans across the country, continent, and diaspora in the fight for land, justice, and radical economic transformation towards economic freedom. Zuma emphasized that reconciliation cannot occur without socio-economic justice and equality.

Jacob Zuma Says He Won't Campaign For Ramaphosa's ANC, Instead Plans To Vote For uMkhontho weSizwe

The Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has ruled that President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2022/03/16/ramaphosa-recognises-prince-misizulu-as-the-new-zulu-king/">to recognize Misuzulu</a> as the Zulu king is unlawful and invalid. The court has ordered Ramaphosa to appoint an investigative committee to look into allegations that the identification of Misuzulu as king did not follow customary laws and customs, <a href="https://www.news24.com/news24/southafrica/news/gauteng-high-court-sets-aside-misuzulus-appointment-20231211">News24</a> reported.
The legal battle between half-brothers Misuzulu Sinqobile kaZwelithini and Prince Simakade Jackson Zulu has been ongoing since 2021 when Prince Misuzulu took over the kingship following the death of his father, King Goodwill Zwelithini Zulu in March of that year. After the subsequent passing of the Regent, Queen Mantfombi Dlamini, in April 2021, the Royal Family identified Prince Misuzulu Singqobile Zulu as the individual who meets the requirements of customary law and customs to assume the position of King. They then sought recognition from President Ramaphosa for Prince Misuzulu as the rightful King. Simakade and Mbonisi Zulu, a half-brother of the late King Goodwill Zwelithini, applied to have Ramaphosa’s recognition of Misuzulu as the rightful monarch overturned. They argued that proper procedures were not followed in Misuzulu’s nomination and appointment.
Judge Norman Davis, in delivering the judgment, emphasized that his decision was not about determining who should be the Zulu king, but rather whether Misuzulu’s appointment followed Zulu customs and whether Ramaphosa correctly recognized him under the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Act.
The court found that Ramaphosa did not follow due process in recognizing Misuzulu as the Zulu king. It also noted that Ramaphosa failed to consider objections raised by certain members of the royal house regarding the identification meeting. The court highlighted that objections were made about how the meeting was conducted and the exclusion of certain individuals.
Princess Thembi, in a letter, argued that the meetings did not comply with the requirements for identifying a successor to the throne. The court concluded that Ramaphosa’s failure to follow the requirements of the Leadership Act makes his recognition decision open to review.

Court Nullifies President Ramaphosa's Recognition Of Misuzulu As Zulu King

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa arrived in France this Saturday, 28 October 2023, to cheer the country’s rugby national team, the Springboks, who play New Zealand in the Webb Ellis Rugby World Cup final.
The Springboks take on New Zealand at the Stade de France this Saturday at 9 PM.
A statement issued by President Ramaphosa’s office reads:

Ramaphosa In France To Cheer Springboks At Rugby World Cup Final

President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Emmerson_Mnangagwa/">Emmerson Mnangagwa</a> has said South Africa is much more than a neighbour as its “strong relationship” with Zimbabwe is based on “trust and cooperation.” He recently conducted a joint tour of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Beitbridge/">Beitbridge</a> Border Post with his South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa, to enhance their bilateral ties. The tour was proposed when they met at the United Nations General Assembly.
During the tour, they discussed upgrading border facilities and services to facilitate the movement of goods and people. The <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/well-harness-post-poll-goodwill-president">Sunday Mail</a> quotes the president as saying:

The purpose of that joint tour was to ensure we lay the infrastructural basis for seamless port operations to promote efficient movement of people, goods and services. South Africa plans to revamp and upgrade its border facilities at the Musina Border, which is the busiest port in Africa. Both countries aim to establish a one-stop border post to improve the efficiency and integration of port services.

President Mnangagwa Says South Africa Is Much More Than A Neighbour

An estimated 20 000 people cross the Zimbabwe/South Africa border on a daily basis.
This was said by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa this Thursday while addressing journalists soon after receiving his Zimbabwean counterpart, President Emmerson Mnangagwa on the South African side of the Beitbridge border.
President Mnangagwa was in South Africa at the invitation of Ramaphosa to inspect the border in order to find ways of improving the movement of people and goods between the two countries. Said Ramaphosa:

We are here on a border inspection to come and see how our two borders are functioning because so many people, visitors from both countries cross the border, I’m told sometimes it’s up to 18 000, 20 000 people a day and so we want to ensure that our two border processes function well so as to enhance ease of movement of our people and ease of movement of goods so that trade between the two countries can be improved. So, this is an inspection visit by both of us.

Ramaphosa was expected to preside over the launch of the Border Management Authority (BMA) in Musina, Limpopo Province, and also hold official talks with Mnangagwa.

20 000 People Transit Through Beitbridge Border Daily - President Ramaphosa

President Emmerson Mnangagwa will on Thursday, 05 October meet his South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa, during the launch of the neighbouring country’s Border Management Authority (BMA) in Musina, Limpopo Province.
In a <a href="https://www.thepresidency.gov.za/press-statements/president-ramaphosa-preside-over-launch-border-management-authority">statemen</a>t on Wednesday, South Africa’s Presidency said the two leaders will jointly tour the Beitbridge Border Post before having their meeting in Musina. Reads the statement:

President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Thursday, 05 October 2023, preside over the launch of the Border Management Authority (BMA) in Musina, Limpopo Province.
The launch of the BMA follows its formal establishment and assumption of its status as a schedule 3 (A) public entity on 1 April 2023.
The establishment of the BMA means that South Africa now has an integrated border management platform, with a single command and control with which to support the attainment of secure borders, safe travel and trade.
As part of the launch, President Ramaphosa will receive President Emmerson Mnangagwa of the Republic of Zimbabwe to hold official talks and undertake a guided tour of the Beitbridge border, supported by members of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee (IMCC) on the BMA.
The President will then proceed to officiate the launch of the BMA at the Musina Show Grounds and also handover a Sword to the Commissioner of the BMA to delegate the powers to lead the third law enforcement authority in the Republic.

South Africa’s Home Affairs Minister, Aaron Motsoaledi, told the media in Pretoria recently that his Ministry is set to upgrade six of its major ports of entry including the Beitbridge Border Post.
According to a report by the<a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/ramaphosa-ed-meet-in-musina-to-tour-beitbridge-border/"> Chronicle</a>, the Zimbabwean government has already completed the upgrading of Beitbridge Border Post at a cost of US$300 million in a private-public partnership with the ZimBorders Consortium.
Beitbridge (Zimbabwe), which now has three terminals for freight, buses and private cars/pedestrians and is also automated, links South Africa with Zambia, Botswana, Mozambique, Angola, DRC, Malawi and Tanzania.

Mnangagwa, Ramaphosa Meet In Beitbridge

A South African opposition politician Mmusi Maimane has criticised the country’s leader, President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call for the unconditional lifting of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by Western powers.
Addressing the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) recently, Ramaphosa said the sanctions should be lifted as they are also affecting South Africa. He said:

The sanctions that are also being applied against South Africa’s neighbour, Zimbabwe, should also be lifted as they are imposing untold suffering on ordinary Zimbabweans, but also have a collateral negative impact on neighbouring countries as well such as my own country, South Africa.

Responding to Ramaphosa’s remarks, Maimane accused the South African leader of siding with the oppressor. He said:

You are on the wrong side of history and are hurting both South Africans and Zimbabweans by supporting this dictator. You have chosen to stand with the oppressor.
South Africa pays the price for the dictatorship in Zimbabwe. We pay in healthcare, in housing and social services.

Hundreds of thousands, probably millions of Zimbabweans, have migrated to South Africa over the past two decades in search of greener pastures after Zimbabwe’s economic collapse.
The Zimbabweans who migrated to South Africa are accused of overburdening the country’s social services.
Some of the illegal migrants have resorted to occupying abandoned buildings and engaging in street hawking.

Maimane Accuses Ramaphosa Of Siding With Oppressors After Calling For Lifting Of Sanctions On Zimbabwe

SADC Heads of State are set to debate the contents of a damning report by the SADC Election Observer Mission (SEOM) on Zimbabwe’s 2023 Harmonised Elections, reported <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/ramaphosa-confirms-sadc-plans-to-hold-summit-over-zimbabwe-poll-report/">ZimLive</a>.
Zimbabwean authorities and representatives of the SADC election observer mission are expected to make presentations to the SADC Heads of State.
This was revealed on Wednesday by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa while speaking to SABC on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly (UNGA78) in New York.
According to the preliminary report by SEOM, Zimbabwe’s 23 August 2023 Harmonised Elections did not meet regional and international benchmarks governing the running of credible polls.
Ramaphosa came under scrutiny at home and abroad for both congratulating and attending Mnangagwa’s inauguration.
In fact, Ramaphosa was among only three SADC Heads of State who attended Mnangagwa’s inauguration, there other two being the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Felix Tshisekedi and Mozambique’s Filipe Nyusi. Said Ramaphosa:

If one looks at that report, it actually says there were challenges; challenges with regards to a number of things that have got to do with the election.
Many countries throughout the world have such challenges; the United States is a prime example with regards to the last election.
They (observers) have said in the report, as I read it, that certain things need to be improved.
They have not declared the election as invalid, unfree and unfair; they have highlighted certain challenges.
What was said by representatives of the observer mission still has to be discussed in SADC because it’s not a final report.
Those are challenges that need to be addressed.
Well, there is a lack of transparency, they (observers) need to come up with the details and I would say, yes, let the details be put forward so that we can deal with them.
So, we are waiting to receive that report at the SADC level so that we can deal with it because if anything, it was an interim report.
So, once the report is put to the SADC body, we will then debate it and we will also hear representations from Zimbabwe as well as the SADC observer mission.

Ramaphosa Says Observers Never Declared Zimbabwe Elections Unfree And Unfair

South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa has reiterated calls for the lifting of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by Western powers.
Zimbabwe has been under targetted sanctions for over two decades after it compulsorily acquired land from white farmers and redistributed to landless blacks at the turn of the millennium.
Addressing the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York, United States of America, on Tuesday, Ramaphosa said the sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe have a negative impact on neighbouring countries, including South Africa. He said:

The sanctions that are applied against Zimbabwe should also be lifted as they are imposing untold suffering on ordinary Zimbabweans, but also have a collateral negative impact on neighbouring countries as well, such as my own country, South Africa.

The Western powers imposed the sanctions against Zimbabwe more than 20 two decades ago when the late former president Robert Mugabe was still in power.
While some government officials and companies’ names have been removed from the sanctions list, the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act (ZDERA) enacted by the United States in 2001 is still in place.
Under ZDERA, the Secretary of the Treasury instructed the U.S. executive director of each international financial institution to “oppose and vote against” any extension by the respective institution of any loan credit, or guarantee to the Government of Zimbabwe.

South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, has expressed grief over the death of the Traditional Prime Minister to the Zulu Monarch and Nation,  Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
Buthelezi, the Founder and President Emeritus of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), and democratic South Africa’s first Minister of Home Affairs, passed away in the early hours of today, Saturday, 9 September 2023, just two weeks after the celebration of his 95th birthday.
Ramaphosa described Buthelezi as a formidable leader who has played a significant role in South Africa’s history for seven decades.

President Ramaphosa Mourns Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi

South Africa’s President, Cyril Ramaphosa, is set to attend the inauguration and swearing-in ceremony of Zimbabwe’s President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, on Monday 04 September 2023.
The swearing-in ceremony will take place at the National Sports Stadium in the capital city Harare.
Ramaphosa’s office released a statement on Sunday evening announcing that he will travel to Zimbabwe for the Presidential Inauguration Ceremony.
He will be accompanied by International Relations and Cooperation Minister Dr Naledi Pandor.

Last week, a prominent South African opposition figure, Mmusi Maimane, who is the leader of the Build One South Africa movement (BOSA), urged Ramaphosa not to attend the inauguration.
Maimane argued that by attending Mnangagwa’s inauguration, Ramaphosa would be undermining the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) on the Zimbabwe elections.
In a previous statement, SADC’s Electoral Observer Mission (SEOM) said that the manner in which the Harmonised Elections were conducted “fell short of the requirements of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, the Electoral Act, and the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections…”

Cyril Ramaphosa To Attend Mnangagwa’s Inauguration

Build One South Africa (BOSA) movement leader Mmusi Maimane has urged South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, not to attend the inauguration and swearing-in ceremony of Zimbabwean President-elect, Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Mnangagwa is set to be sworn in as Zimbabwe’s leader for a second and final term on 04 September at the National Sports Stadium in Harare.
In a letter addressed to heads of State, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Ministry permanent secretary James Manzou said Mnagangwa’s official inauguration will take place on Monday.
However, Maimane, who is a vocal critic of Zimbabwe’s ZANU PF party, said that by attending, Ramaphosa would be undermining the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) on the Zimbabwe elections.
In a post on Twitter, now X, Maimane warned that by attending Mnangagwa’s swearing-in ceremony, Ramaphosa would be prolonging the “crisis” in Zimbabwe. He wrote:

Ramaphosa’s office has yet to officially reveal whether he will be attending or not.
However, in a previous statement, Ramaphosa congratulated the people of Zimbabwe for holding peaceful elections.
He also said he noted the concerns raised by international observers missions and those from the AU and SADC.

Maimane Urges Ramaphosa Not To "Undermine" SADC By Attending ED Inauguration

President Cyril Ramaphosa on Tuesday said South Africa’s congratulations to Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on his re-election in the country’s recent elections was on the basis that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has declared him the winner.
Speaking <a href="https://www.sabcnews.com/sabcnews/congratulatory-message-to-mnangagwa-based-on-election-commission-declaration-ramaphosa/">to the SABC</a> on the sidelines of his visit to Soweto, Ramaphosa called for Zimbabweans to exercise patience until everything is processed. He said:

The SADC body has issued a preliminary report. They are still going to sit down together with many other observers and analyse everything.
So, let’s wait until all that comes out but the Electoral Commission in Zimbabwe has made a declaration and it is on that basis that we have issued our congratulatory message.
So, the rest of the things still need to be processed no doubt and everybody including the government of Zimbabwe accepts that so let’s wait until everything is well processed.

Ramaphosa’s congratulatory message was met with consternation in some quarters after the SADC Observer Mission expressed its reservations about the recently concluded harmonised elections.
The SADC observer team said voting delays, the banning of opposition rallies and biased state media compromised the credibility of the 23 August elections.

Ramaphosa Explains Congratulatory Message To Mnangagwa

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa posted a congratulatory message to President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Monday night, almost two days after the ZANU PF leader was declared winner in Zimbabwe’s disputed polls held on 23 August.
The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) announced Mnangagwa as the winner with 52.6 percent of the vote.
CCC leader Nelson Chamisa polled 44 percent, according to ZEC, but the opposition leader rejected the results alleging rigging.
In a message posted on X, Ramaphosa congratulated Mnangagwa for his victory despite SADC and other international observer teams’ refusal to endorse the polls. Wrote Ramaphosa:

I congratulate President Emmerson Mnangagwa on his re-election. I wish him and the people of Zimbabwe well for the upcoming term.

In a statement posted on his website earlier on Monday, Ramaphosa congratulated Zimbabwe for successfully holding general elections “under a difficult economic environment”.
Ramaphosa said he had taken note of preliminary pronouncements by various election observer missions, and urged Zimbabweans to work together for peace and development.
The President Of Namibia, Hage Geingob, and the President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, have both congratulated President Emmerson Mnangagwa after he was declared the winner in the 23 August elections.

Ramaphosa Endorses Mnangagwa Victory After Disputed Elections

Former President Jacob Zuma of South Africa has been granted a remission status, which exempts him from serving further time in prison. Remission status is typically granted to low-risk and non-violent offenders.
President Cyril Ramaphosa ordered the release of thousands of non-violent offenders, including Zuma, after he was briefly re-incarcerated. 
Makgothi Thobakgale, the national commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services, told reporters in Pretoria, the capital that the nation’s prison authority freed former President Zuma after he was re-incarcerated for less than two hours on Friday. He said Zuma, 81, was “admitted” to a prison in Estcourt in eastern South Africa early in the morning, and then freed after he was “subjected to administrative processes,” 
The decision follows a constitutional court ruling that overturned Zuma’s release on medical parole, which had initially led to widespread protests and violence in the country.
In 2021, Zuma was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment for defying a court order to appear before the Zondo Commission which was investigating him over corruption allegedly committed during his nine-year tenure as president. His initial arrest two years ago led to violent protests across South Africa that saw over 300 people killed.
He then handed himself over to authorities in July 2021 but was released on medical parole due to ill health two months later. He denies corruption allegations.

Former South African President Jacob Zuma Granted Remission, Avoiding Further Prison Time

The South African government has agreed to execute the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin if he ever sets foot in the country. The Department of Justice has also agreed to pay the costs of the legal application launched by the DA to compel the government to arrest Putin if he were to attend the BRICS summit in Johannesburg.
This decision comes after the government announced that Putin would not physically attend the summit and would participate virtually. The Presidency’s statement confirmed that by mutual agreement, Putin would not attend and that the Russian Federation will be represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Reads the Presidency’s statement:

The International Criminal Court issued a warrant of arrest for Putin for alleged war crimes in his invasion of Ukraine. By law, South Africa would have had to arrest him if he entered the country.
The Democratic Alliance (DA), a South African political party, went to the Gauteng High Court to force the government to commit to arresting Putin. As a result, the government has agreed to execute the ICC arrest warrant against Putin if he ever sets foot in South Africa.

South Africa Agrees To Execute ICC Warrant Of Arrest Against Putin

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has been cleared of any wrongdoing in the Phala Phala farm saga after a year-long investigation by the office of the Public Protector.
Phala Phala is Ramaphosa’s private game farm near Bela-Bela, Limpopo, South Africa where hundreds of thousands of cash in US dollars was stolen on 9 February 2020.
<a href="https://www.iol.co.za/news/politics/ramaphosa-cleared-over-phala-phala-acting-public-protector-92f64572-3676-45c9-9658-7568ad9b27db">IOL</a> reported that Acting Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka released her report where she found that Ramaphosa had not breached the Executive Code of Ethics in the whole saga.
She said there was also no conflict between the president and his private interest on the farm.
The complaint against Ramaphosa was lodged last year June by opposition parties after it emerged that US$582 000 was stolen from the game farm.
Gcaleka also found that Ramaphosa was not involved in the sale of buffalo to a Sudanese businessman, who is based in Dubai.
She and her team established that the president was not involved in the day-to-day operations of the farm.
Gcaleka released her report into Phala Phala on Friday, 30 June 2023. Part of the report reads:

Therefore, the evidence does not support the allegations that the president’s financial interest in game or cattle farming at Phala Phala farm exposes him to any situation involving the risk of a conflict between his official responsibilities and his private interests.
Accordingly, the allegation that the president improperly and in violation of the provisions of the executive code exposed him to any risk of a conflict between his constitutional duties and obligations and his private interests arising or affected by his paid work at Phala Phala farm is not substantiated.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Ramaphosa’s head of security, Wally Rhoode, has been found to have abused the powers entrusted to him when he investigated the theft at Phala Phala farm.
