The 2024 Defence Forces Day celebrations will be held at Rufaro Stadium in Mbare, marking a departure from the event’s traditional venue at the National Sports Stadium.
The location change comes as the National Sports Stadium, a 60,000-seater facility, has been out of use since September 2023, when it hosted President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s inauguration ceremony.
The iconic stadium is currently undergoing renovations to bring it up to the standards required by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host international football matches.
However, the renovations have faced delays due to a lack of funding from the Treasury. In May 2024, the Minister of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Kirsty Coventry, told parliament that funds had not been released to complete the upgrades.
During the post-Cabinet media briefing in Harare on Tuesday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Jenfan Muswere announced that this year’s Defence Forces Day commemoration will take place on August 13. He said:

The Defence Forces Day celebrations in 2024 will be at Rufaro Stadium, not the National Sports Stadium. The National Sports Stadium is being renovated for international football matches. The renovations are delayed because of funding issues. The celebrations will be on August 13 with the theme "Guaranteeing A Conducive Environment For Attainment Of Vision 2030". The change of venue is because the National Sports Stadium is not ready.

Rufaro Stadium To Host Defence Forces Day Celebrations

CCC has commended the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) for safeguarding the country’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as offering assistance to the civilian authority in times of need over the past 43 years.
In a statement to mark the 2023 Defence Forces’ Day on 15 August, CCC National Spokesperson, Fadzayi Mahere, noted that the country’s military has supported the civilian authority in saving lives by delivering humanitarian aid in times of crisis such as in the immediate aftermath of Cyclone Idai.
CCC, however, urged ZDF to serve “the interests of all Zimbabweans by fully complying with [its] constitutional obligation to respect the lives and dignity of the people in the execution of their duties.”
Mahere said if CCC wins the upcoming general elections, the military will never be used to curtail the rights and freedoms of citizens. Read the statement below:

Today, we join the nation in commemorating 43 years since the Zimbabwe Defence Forces came into being.
The constitutionally-defined roles of the Defence Forces are to protect Zimbabwe’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, to partake in the design of our shared regional security architecture, to play a role in the preservation of international stability and peace and to offer assistance to the civilian authority in times of need.
Our Defence Forces have distinguished themselves in many of their constitutionally-defined roles. For 43 years, they have safeguarded Zimbabwe’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
We take pride in their sterling performances in various peacekeeping missions in Africa and the role they continue to play in aiding the civilian authority to save lives, deliver humanitarian aid and spearhead emergency reconstruction as they did in 2019 in the wake of Cyclone Idai.
However, the Defence Forces’ 43 years of service have been undermined by partisan politics. We note with particular sadness the attempt to poison and politicize the Defence Forces for partisan purposes and repression.
On this day of commemoration, we call on the Defence Forces to remember their constitutional mandate to the people of Zimbabwe.
We ask that they act in a manner that serves the interests of all Zimbabweans by fully complying with their constitutional obligation to respect the lives and dignity of the people in the execution of their duties.
In line with the Constitution, we demand the protection of citizens’ rights and freedoms by the Defence Forces. Our security services must protect not threaten citizens.
The democratic expression of citizens must be safeguarded. We reiterate our call for a Defence Force for everyone.
Under the incoming Citizen Government, weapons and arms of war will never be deployed to support a political party’s partisan interests or impede the citizens’ right to demonstrate peacefully.
Instead, our Defence Forces will support collective national interests taking due cognisance of the fundamental rights and diversity of the citizenry.
The professional standing of the Defence Forces will not be interfered with. The Defence Forces will be given the space to serve the people as prescribed by law.
We will improve the conditions of service of rank and file soldiers. They deserve to earn a living USD wage and conditions of service befitting of the important constitutional role they are mandated to play in our society.

Zimbabwe commemorated the 41st National Defence Forces Day on Tuesday 10 August State House grounds in compliance with COVID-19 protocols.
On this day Zimbabweans celebrate the dedication of the country’s uniformed forces and their commitment to protecting national sovereignty, upholding justice and maintaining law and order.

Statement by Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi ahead of the Heroes and Defence Forces day holidays.

HEROES AND DEFENCE FORCES DAY HOLIDAYS
As the nation commemorates the 2021 Heroes and Defence Forces days, the Zimbabwe Republic Police urges the public to continue observing and complying with the Government’s COVID-19 regulations.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police will ensure that no intercity movements are undertaken by travellers in line with the Government’s recent ban.
Any pirate taxis, mushikashika or private vehicles found to be carrying passengers during the period will be dealt with in terms of the country’s laws.
As from July 2021 to date, the Zimbabwe Republic Police impounded forty-one (41) buses in Masvingo, ten (10) buses in Harare, seven (7) buses in Mashonaland West, five (05) buses in Mashonaland East and four (4) buses in Manicaland for intercity movements in clear violation of the Government’s directive.
Transporters are strongly warned against defying the safety measures put in place by Government.
Police will only clear commercial cargo and essential services to pass through checkpoints and roadblocks.
Above all, Police officers will conduct stop and search, blitz and raids to account for people who are contravening the Government’s ban on bars, beer halls and nightclubs. Shebeen operators will also be arrested during the holidays.
The public is reminded that all public gatherings are banned and funerals should be guided by the figure of 30 mourners as stipulated by Government.
Since most companies and institutions will be closed during the holidays, the Zimbabwe Republic Police implores Zimbabweans to stay at home, mask up and practice social distancing to curb the spread of COVID-19.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police wishes all Zimbabweans an accident and crime-free holiday.

No Intercity Travel, Public Gatherings On Heroes Day - Police

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has pledged to improve the salaries and conditions of service for the country’s defence forces.
In a national address to mark Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) Day at State House on Tuesday, President Mnangagwa said his government is determined to provide such things as housing, transport and medical facilities among others, for the defence forces. He said:
<blockquote>I am aware of the sacrificial nature and service ethos of the defence forces. However, my administration remains determined to improve the salaries and conditions of service for our forces.
Housing, transport and medical facilities among other requirements are being improved in recognition of the role and sacrifices made by our Defence Forces in the conduct of their duties.
Mobility, requisite training equipment and research and development needs will be equally funded to ensure the modernisation and improvement of our national defence capabilities.</blockquote>
Vice Presidents Constantino Chiwenga and Kembo Mohadi, Defence and War Veterans Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri and service chiefs attended the virtual ceremony.
The 40th celebrations of the ZDF were this year held under the theme “ZDF: Celebrating 40 Years of Excellent Service to the People”.

ED Pledges To Raise Defence Forces' Salaries

<blockquote>Today, the MDC Alliance joins the nation in commemorating our Defence Forces. It is 40 years since the Zimbabwe Defence Forces came into being through the integration of the ZIPRA and ZANLA liberation armies and the Rhodesian colonial forces in 1980.
This year’s commemoration of four decades of service presents an opportunity to reflect on the history and direction of our Defence Forces.
There would be no independent Zimbabwe were it not for ZIPRA and ZANLA, whose liberation war feats helped force the uncooperative colonial Rhodesian government to the 1979 Independence talks at Lancaster House. We owe a great debt to the two liberation armies.
The constitutionally defined roles of the Defence Forces are to protect Zimbabwe’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, to partake in the design of shared regional security architecture, to play a role in the preservation of international stability and peace, and to offer military assistance to civil authority in times of need.
Our Defence Forces have distinguished themselves in many of their constitutionally defined roles.
For 40 years they have safeguarded Zimbabwe’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Our Defence Forces have played an active part in SADC’s security architecture. We take pride in their sterling performances in various peacekeeping missions in Africa and in the role they continue to play in aiding civil authority to save lives, deliver humanitarian aid and spearhead emergency reconstruction as they did in 2019 in the wake of Cyclone Idai.
However, the Defence Forces’ 40 years of existence have not been unblemished. We note with particular sadness the politicisation of the Defence Forces for domestic repression and the continued militarisation of the civic space.
On this day of commemoration, we call on the Defence Forces to remember their constitutional mandate to the people of Zimbabwe.
We ask that they act in a manner that better serves the interests of all Zimbabweans, by fully complying with their constitutional obligation to respect the lives and dignity of the people in the execution of their duties.
In the new Zimbabwe, weapons and arms of war will never be deployed to support a political party’s partisan interests or impede the people’s right to demonstrate peacefully but instead support collective national interests taking due cognisance of the fundamental rights and diversity of the citizenry.
Perhaps, the most significant commemoration we can give to our Defence Forces on this day is to collectively call for the improvement of the conditions of service for rank and file soldiers as well as plead with each and every member of the Defence Forces to remember that the people of Zimbabwe are not their enemies, instead, we ask that they work to protect.

FULL TEXT: Russia Congratulates Zim On Heroes’ & Defence Forces Day 

Zimbabwean is commemorating the annual Heroes Day and Defence Forces Day holidays next month and the government says preparations are at an advanced stage.
The development was announced by the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa following a cabinet meeting on Tuesday. Presenting the 26th post-cabinet briefing, she said:
<blockquote>Cabinet also noted preparations for the 2020 Heroes day commemorations and defence forces day celebrations although there will be no physical gatherings due to Covid-19.</blockquote>
Mutsvangwa also observed that cabinet hah approved the strengthening of the Covid-19 response strategy amid an increase in fatalities and an unexpected surge in local cases.
She also reported that plans were underway to quicken the process of putting in place Rapid Result Test teams to facilitate localised lockdowns in hotspot suburbs in Harare, Bulawayo and Gweru.

<blockquote>Distinguished guests; ladies and gentlemen; I am humbled to address you today, on this important day and gathering in the history of Zimbabwe where we celebrate the works of our Defence Forces.
The entire nation joins our illustrious sons and daughters in the military to celebrate this 38th Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day.
This day was set aside by the Government at independence, in 1980, to recognize and appreciate the critical role played by our Defence Forces in maintaining peace and tranquillity, as well as in safeguarding national security and territorial integrity.
Our country has, since Independence, remained as one of the most peaceful and politically stable countries in the region. Today’s celebrations come just two weeks after the country’s crucial Harmonized General Elections.
These were held in a peaceful environment where citizens were able to exercise their democratic rights without fear or intimidation. Allow me, to extend my sincere appreciation to the whole nation for observing peace, before, during, and after these harmonized elections. This has made us proud as a nation. I am however deeply concerned with the incidents of violence that rocked the streets of Harare at the instigation of some members of the MDC Alliance leadership, which subsequently resulted in the regrettable loss of lives, injury to persons and damage to property.
On behalf of Government, and indeed on my own behalf, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and relatives of the victims of the politically motivated violence. We strongly condemn these barbaric acts of violence. Let me once again state that violence and intolerance have no place in the new Zimbabwe, in our Second Republic.
We continue to call for restraint, peace and more peace throughout the country. The new dispensation has opened up the country’s democratic and economic space and demonstrated that Zimbabwe’s democracy has matured. This, however, should never be abused. Let us bury our political differences and focus on rebuilding a prosperous Zimbabwe as one family.
Distinguished guests, comrades and friends; as Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, I am honoured to share this joyous day with you our Defence Forces. You have indeed remained a source of inspiration and national pride throughout the thirty-eight years of existence and operations. While you have maintained peace and security in this country, at the same time you have contributed to global peace, security and harmony through your involvement in regional and international peace-keeping missions.
As part of the constitutionally enshrined mandate outlined in Section 212 of our Constitution, the Defence Forces will continue to protect Zimbabwe, its people, its national security, interests and territorial integrity. Furthermore, our Defence Forces have supported other sister security forces like the Zimbabwe Republic Police, in curbing the economic haemorrhaging
Distinguished guests; comrades and friends; we applaud the Defence Forces for the various corporate social responsibility activities and programmes which has seen the ZDF providing civil assistance to ministries in all the country’s ten provinces, as well as various community projects. These projects included construction of school classroom blocks, clinics, hospitals and bridges, among other infrastructure developments. In addition, our Zimbabwe Defence Forces, in conjunction with the Civil Protection Unit, also offered aid by providing logistical, food and medical assistance to victims of natural disasters especially in the country’s flood-prone low lying areas.To this end, our Forces continue to showcase that they are a people’s force and committed to serve the nation.
In fulfilment of their obligations, various training and development programmes are being conducted for ZDF members at various training institutions around the country. Only on Friday, I officiated at the Zimbabwe National Defence University’s Sixth Graduation Ceremony of the National Defence Course 06/2017 which saw students graduating after acquiring requisite tools to address today’s contemporary national defence and security strategic challenges and opportunities.
To widen the scope of ZDF competencies, officershave continued to undertake training programmes offered by other countries. This accounts for severalZDF officers presently attending regional courses inBotswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia as well as others carried out in China, Russia, Greece, India, Malaysia and Pakistan.
This has significantly transformed our forces as major contributors to international peace and stability. In thisregard, our officers have earned excellent international reputation, goodwill and confidence throughout theworld. Several officers are currently deployed in Ethiopia, Lesotho, Somalia, South Sudan, and at the UN Headquarters. We are indeed proud that our Forces continue to raise the Zimbabwean flag high through demonstration of professionalism, intelligence and diligence, wherever, they are deployed.
Furthermore, the ZDF currently has a contingent of officers and men participating in the Russian International Military Games, which are being hosted by the Russian Federation, Kazakhstan, China and Belarus. International military interactions of this nature, are critical in improving the operational capabilities of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces as well as its image at the world stage. Most importantly, participation of our Forces at that level helps to sharpen their skills, while at the same time improving their professional conduct and preparedness to defend Zimbabwe. This is over and above the obvious benefit of improving bilateral and diplomatic relations between Zimbabwe and other participating countries.
Back home, my administration is committed to progressively and comprehensively addressing the Conditions of Service of our Defence Forces, inclusive of their housing needs, as the economy improves. In addition, my administration will also pay attention to the re-equipping of our Forces, whose equipment in some instances dates back to 30 years.
Ladies and gentlemen, comrades and friends; in conclusion, allow me to commend Commanders of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces for their astute leadership and guidance to our Defence Forces. To all our officers, men and women of the ZDF, I encourage you to remain resolute, and to diligently and professionally execute your mandate to protect Zimbabwe, its people, its national security, interests and territorial integrity.

Full Text:  President Mnangagwa Defence Forces Day Speech

In an interview with The Herald ahead of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Day today, Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) Commander General Philip Valerio Sibanda said six people would not have been killed had it not been for the opposition which incited violence.
He said the ZDF will continue to support the Zimbabwe Republic Police as it discharges its constitutional mandate. Said General Sibanda:
<blockquote>Zimbabwe remains secure despite the recent politically motivated violence that erupted a day after the harmonised elections on 30 July 2018. That notwithstanding, the country has continued to enjoy peace, security and stability during the harmonised elections. Had it not been for evil intentions of some opposition political players who went on to incite violent protests, unnecessary loss of life of six people who were caught up in the unfortunate shooting incidents could have been avoided. All the same, the Zimbabwe Defence Forces remain resolute in its support for the ZRP as they continue to fulfil their constitutional mandate of maintenance of law and order to ensure peace, security and stability in the country. People are therefore, assured that they should feel free to go about their usual business.</blockquote>

Had It Not Been For MDC Alliance, Soldiers Would Not Have Killed 6 People: Army Commander General Sibanda

President Mnangagwa will today preside over the main Heroes Day commemorations at the National Heroes Acre. He is also expected to officiate at the main Defence Forces Day celebrations which will be held at the National Sports Stadium.
Minister of State for Harare Metropolitan Province Mirriam Chikukwa told The Herald that buses will pick up people from the usual pick up points. Said Chikukwa:
<blockquote>All the transport logistics are now in place. We have secured 50 buses for tomorrow (Heroes Day) and 100 for the 14th (Defence Forces Day) for the main events. However, Bulawayo also have five buses and other provinces will have two buses each. Buses will pick up people from usual pick up points from as early as 6am.</blockquote>
Jah Prayzah and Alick Macheso are scheduled to perform tomorrow while Malawi Defence Forces will play Zimbabwe Defence Forces in a soccer match slated for the afternoon.
