A former financial accountant at Slice Distributors, Tinashe Zengenene, has been accused of defrauding the company of over US$45,000. Zengenene appeared in court before Harare Magistrate Dennis Mangosi this week and was granted bail of US$100.
<h3>The allegations:</h3>
The State alleges that Zengenene failed to pay suppliers despite receiving approval from the company.
The fraud was discovered by Paddington Mungate, a senior internal auditor at Slice Distributors. Mungate noticed that there were pending payments to suppliers dating back to 2022 and decided to investigate further, <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/chicken-slice-loses-us45k-to-accountant/">H-Metro</a> reported. He obtained statements from 10 suppliers and found that Zengenene had not made the payments, even though he had allegedly received US$45,146 for that purpose. It is believed that Zengenene converted the money for personal use.
Zengenene’s role as a financial accountant included authorising payments and reconciling daily transactions. Mungate, during his routine checks, discovered the discrepancies and confronted Zengenene about the outstanding transactions. Zengenene requested additional time to clear the pending transactions but failed to do so.
Slice Distributors is the company behind popular food chains such as Chicken Slice, Pizza Slice, Creamy Slice, and Slice Grill. The case against Zengenene will continue on March 19, as he faces charges of fraud for misusing company funds.

Former Slice Distributors Accountant Accused of $45,000 Fraud

Jaison Muvevi, a former police officer who gained attention earlier this year for killing three people, including a police officer, has been deemed mentally unfit for trial. After examination by two doctors, the court concluded that Muvevi was mentally challenged at the time of the offences and should be admitted to a psychiatric hospital. Harare Magistrate Dennis Mangosi ruled:

Accused first appeared in court on January facing allegations of murder. Counsel for the accused made an application to have the accused examined in terms of the mental health act.
It was not opposed by the State. He was then examined by 2 doctors and both doctors agreed that the accused is having mental challenges.
The court is motivated to commit him to a psychiatric hospital.

The motive behind his actions remains unknown.
Muvevi faces multiple murder charges, including the killing of an apostolic sect leader, a police officer, and a bartender. He is also accused of attempted murder in two separate incidents. In one instance, Muvevi shot a man in the head without apparent reason, and in another, he fatally shot a religious leader during a church service. After a series of confrontations with law enforcement, Muvevi was eventually arrested in Mozambique.
What are the criteria for determining mental unfitness in court?
To determine mental unfitness in court in Zimbabwe, the criteria are set out in the Mental Health Act. A person is considered mentally disordered if they have a mental illness, handicap, or disorder that impairs their communication, decision-making, or personal hygiene. Criteria may include psychiatric evaluation, understanding of legal proceedings, and evidence of abnormal behaviour. The court makes the final decision based on medical evidence and legal criteria.

Court Rules That Serial Killer Jaison Muvevi Is Mentally Unfit For Trial

A Waterfalls man appeared before Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi on Monday facing a charge of defrauding Old Mutual of US$90 000 through a fake insurance claim, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200004955/trio-defrauds-old-mutual-of-us90k">NewsDay</a> reported.
The accused, Henrics Providence Dhonga (30) from Mainway Meadows faces two counts of fraud and illegal possession of articles for criminal use. He was remanded in custody until today for a bail hearing.
Dhonga, an employee at Bright Insurance Brokers Private Limited, is co-accused with two accomplices, Llyod Makuzva (45) and Reality Njabulo Chuma (30).
<h2>What happened:</h2>
It is alleged that in May 2022, Dhonga was approached by Munyaradzi Ramewa, still at large, who wanted compensation for his vehicle which was involved in an accident a long time ago and was parked at a house in Mutare.
On August 14, 2022, Dhonga, Makuvaza and Chuma proceeded to Mutare where they met Ramewa and staged an accident involving the VW Touareg motor vehicle.
They reported the staged accident to the police in Mutare, and Road Angels towed the vehicle.
On September 20, 2022, they made a fraudulent claim through Dhonga saying the vehicle was severely damaged on the front, suspension, engine and gearbox.
Old Mutual Insurance Company processed a claim for US$90 000.
The fraud came to light when Old Mutual discovered that the photographs the accused persons sent were different from the ones submitted by Road Angeles which towed the vehicle from the scene.
It was also discovered that Dhonga, a director at Panel Tech Motors, was involved in more insurance fraud cases.
Police searched his Mazda CX5 vehicle on Saturday and recovered a backpack with 11 homemade police stamps for different police stations in Chitungwiza, Chegutu, Harare, Marondera and Norton.

Trio Dupes Old Mutual Insurance Company Of US$90 000

A gold buyer held hostage a Chinhoyi couple for selling him fake gold worth US$24 000.
Donald Chiwenga (45) has since appeared before Dennis Manogid accused of holding hostage Eric Marangarire and Mercy Maphosa after establishing they had sold him 480 grams of fake gold, <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/chiwenga-duped-into-buying-fake-gold-for-us24000-takes-couple-hostage-in-revenge-and-force-them-to-handover-4-vehicles/">NewZimbabwe</a> reported.
The court heard that Chiwenga also forcibly took the couple’s four vehicles to make up for what they had done to him.
Chiwenga appeared before Harare Magistrate Dennis Mangosi and was remanded in custody until January 21 of 2023.
The  National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) alleges Chiwenga purchased 480 grams of fake gold worth US$24 000 from Marangarire and Maphosa.
The court heard that Chiwenga only realised it was fake when he was smelting it in Kwekwe.
Infuriated by this, Chiwenga planned a payback by holding the couple hostage and forcing the two to sign agreements of sale of their four vehicles to his name in the presence of a lawyer.
The cars include a Mercedes Benz, Honda Fit, Toyota Hilux and Toyota Corolla.

Gold Buyer Buys Fake Gold Worth US$24 000

A 31-year-old Harare man set his employer’s vehicle ablaze to conceal the theft of US$90 000 he had been given to deliver to Bulawayo.
This emerged when the man, Moffat Tembo, appeared before Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi answering to theft and malicious damage to property charges, according to <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/man-sets-employers-car-ablaze-after-stages-us90-000-robbery/">NewZimbabwe</a>.
<h2>What happened:</h2>
It is alleged that on October 10, Tembo was asked to run an errand on behalf of his employer, transporting funds amounting to US$90 000 from Harare to Bulawayo.
The court heard that Tembo connived with his co-worker Vimbai Matereke whom he gave the money at the White House along Bulawayo Road in Harare before proceeding with his journey.
On a five km peg into <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Chegutu">Chegutu</a>, he allegedly stopped, sprinkled petrol on his employer’s Toyota Allion vehicle and then set it on fire. The fire was later put out by the Chegutu fire brigade.
His employer only identified as Dean was called and he instructed Tembo to report the matter to the Chegutu police station.
He, however, failed or neglected to do so, triggering suspicions.
The matter was later investigated, and it was established that Tembo had faked the robbery.
Magistrate Dennis Mangosi remanded him in custody until October 18, 2022.

Employee Sets Car On Fire To Conceal Theft Of US$90 000

A 42-year-old man who sold a car he had rented from a local car rental firm has been remanded in custody by a Harare magistrate.
Patson Mayenzanise, who allegedly sold a Toyota Fortuner he had hired, worth US$55 000, is facing theft charges.
The court heard that Mayenzanise forged a registration book and sold the hired car.
It is alleged that Mayenzanise failed to pay the car rental fees and the owner tracked the car only to find out it had been sold
Mayenzanise was subsequently arrested.
He was denied bail by Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi and was advised to apply for bail at the High Court.
He is expected back in court on the 13th of next month.
In a different case, a 26-year-old Nash Kunze appeared in court facing fraud charges in a ZWL$1.2 million botched timber deal.
He allegedly lied to a client that he owned a timber company and was able to supply the product.
The court heard that he disappeared after receiving the ZWL$1.2 million.
A report was made to the police and he was arrested following investigations.
