A 53-year-old Tajikistani national, Asror Saidov, is set to be deported from Zimbabwe following his arrest for violating the Immigration Act.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed the development, stating that Saidov, who was residing in Kwekwe, was arraigned before the Gweru Magistrates Court. Said the NPA:

The offender entered the country through Robert Mugabe International Airport Harare, on the 19th of January 2024, and was issued with a 30-day Holiday visiting visa.
He applied for a 30-day extension of his visitor’s visa which was granted and subsequently expired on the 18th day of March 2024. He overstayed his visa until he was arrested.

Saidov was sentenced to a fine of US$200 or a month’s imprisonment. He is now awaiting deportation.
Tajikistan is a landlocked country located in Central Asia, bordered by Afghanistan to the south, Uzbekistan to the west, Kyrgyzstan to the north, and China to the east.
The country is known for its mountainous terrain, with over 90% of its territory covered by mountains.

A wave of panic has gripped some Zimbabwean nationals residing in South Africa as the country’s immigration department intensifies document checks under the directives of the new Home Affairs minister, Leon Schreiber.
Schreiber recently announced that his department will increase inspections at various establishments, including restaurants, spaza shops, farms, and mines, by over 50 per cent.
The aim is to take enforcement action, including deportations, against those found to be employed illegally.
South African immigration officials have launched door-to-door searches in parts of Johannesburg, targeting spaza shops and other businesses.
This crackdown has left undocumented Zimbabweans living in the country fearful that they might be discovered and subsequently deported.
In an interview with <a href="https://cite.org.zw/door-to-door-searches-spark-panic-among-undocumented-zimbabweans/">CITE</a>, Ngqabutho Nicholas Mabhena, Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Community in South Africa, said:

We are worried that there seems to be an increase in the number of arrests targeting undocumented migrants.
While the law states that undocumented individuals must be arrested, we do not contest the right of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and immigration officials to arrest undocumented people.
[However], [t]here is now a new tendency where people are rounded up at their places of work or residences and taken to police stations where they are asked to pay hefty sums of money – R3,500 or so – for their release.
It appears as if migrants are being used by SAPS for fundraising purposes.

Mabhena argued that while South Africa has the right to arrest anyone violating immigration laws, the best solution is to document the undocumented. He said:

South African middle class and big companies employ migrant labour and exploit them. We believe the best way to deal with migrant labour is to document the undocumented.
The arrests of undocumented migrants are not new. It has been happening since 1994, even during the apartheid regime, but it is not the solution.

An undocumented migrant, Hardlife Shoko, from Shurugwi, who does odd jobs and sometimes works on farms, said:

I came to South Africa seeking a chance to rebuild my life. Exploitation is real there because the farm owners say we don’t earn much since we don’t pay rent while working there.
I live in constant fear that I will be caught and deported. It’s a daily struggle to avoid attention but continue working.

Recently, Gauteng Social Development Member of the Executive Council (MEC) Faith Mazibuko warned landlords across South Africa that they could face arrest if found harbouring foreigners who are in South Africa illegally. She was quoted as saying:

Residents across South Africa who have undocumented tenants need to take immediate action.
When the police commence with the raids, arrests will be made, and it will include the landlord. It is your duty as a landlord to request all documents of your tenants.

Immigration Crackdown In South Africa Sparks Panic Among Zimbabweans

A 74-year-old Kenyan national has been sentenced to 5 months in prison by the Bindura Magistrates’ Court for contravening the Immigration Act.
Richard Antony Muriar Ogana came to Zimbabwe seeking spiritual healing from a local practitioner who later turned to be an informant, according to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
After Ogana was healed of his illness and his condition became stable, the Zimbabwean spiritualist asked him to leave the shrine but he said he had nowhere to go. Said the NPA:

This prompted the informant to alert the Police on the 21st of March, launching an investigation into the accused person’s identity. The accused person failed to produce permits allowing him to stay in the country, leading to his arrest.
He was sentenced to 5 months imprisonment which was wholly suspended on condition of good behavior. He remains in custody awaiting deportation to Kenya.

Zimbabwe Set To Deport 74-year-old Kenyan National

The United States has criticised the Zimbabwean government after some U.S. humanitarian workers and contractors were rounded up in Harare and allegedly harassed, detained and then deported by authorities.
In a statement issued on Friday, 08 March, U.S. Department of State spokesperson Matthew Miller said those detained and deported were USAID officials and contractors, who were conducting an assessment of the development and governance context in the southern country.
Miller warned Zimbabwe that the detention and deportation of the U.S. citizens were “unjustified and unacceptable” and said the incident undermines Harare’s international re-engagement efforts. Reads the statement:

Last month, Zimbabwean officials abruptly detained and deported USAID officials and contractors, who were conducting an assessment of the development and governance context in Zimbabwe.
Members of the assessment team were subject to aggressive handling, prolonged interrogation and intimidation, unsafe and forced nighttime transportation, overnight detention and confinement, and forced removal from the country.
As we have made clear in the strongest possible terms to the Government of Zimbabwe, these actions against a team of development professionals legally admitted to Zimbabwe to support the Government of Zimbabwe’s expressed commitment to democratic reform are egregious, unjustified and unacceptable.
The Government of Zimbabwe has said it wants to pursue international re-engagement and democratic reforms. Its actions undermine those claims.
We take the safety and security of U.S. citizens seriously and demand accountability from the Government of Zimbabwe.
The people of Zimbabwe deserve better and we will continue to support them as we work to build a more inclusive, democratic society with accountable political leaders and government institutions.

United States Government Warns Zimbabwe Over "Harassment" Of U.S. Humanitarian Workers In Harare

Thousands of Zimbabwean nationals residing in South Africa whose special permits expire at the end of this year can now bring back all their belongings duty-free, including one vehicle, a Cabinet minister has said.
Addressing journalists during a post-Cabinet briefing in Harare on Tuesday, Information minister Monica Mutsvangwa said there are no limits to personal property that one can bring back home. She said:

The Zimbabwean Government has issued guidelines and regulations for returning residents which include one duty-free vehicle and no limits to personal property.
Government has also engaged the South African government, emphasising that Zimbabwe is ready to receive its returning nationals, who should comply with the relevant South African laws.

Zimbabwe expects tens of thousands of its nationals to be deported from South Africa following the expiry of Zimbabwe Exemptions Permits (ZEP) which South Africa had granted them.
Zimbabwean ZEP holders in South Africa were given up to 31 December 2022 to regularise their stay or face deportation. SA later extended the permit’s validity to June 30 of next year.
Mutsvangwa added that Cabinet had agreed to establish an inter-ministerial committee that would be supported by sub-committees that would look at the provision of transport and logistics, security, documentation, re-integration support, resource mobilisation, information and publicity as well as health and education.
About 189 000 Zimbabweans held the ZEPs and the bulk of them face deportation after failing to get fresh permits under other schemes.

Govt Extends Duty-free Facility To Citizens Returning From South Africa

Eighty-four (84) Malawian immigrants are languishing in Zimbabwean prisons after they were arrested for travelling without requisite documents.
It is believed that the majority of the immigrants had no intention of staying in Zimbabwe but were travelling to South Africa.
Malawi’s deputy ambassador to Zimbabwe Elias Mpaso confirmed that scores of Malawians are detained in Zimbabwean prisons saying the embassy was making efforts to repatriate them. He said:

Last Friday we had 84 Malawian nationals in Zimbabwean jails. There are 66 males at Harare Remand Prison and 18 females at Chikurubi. These people were arrested in different parts of Zimbabwe.
However, the government is trying its best to repatriate them, we are still waiting for the Foreign Affairs Department to officially inform us. We are also sourcing funds from Malawi for their repatriation.
In Malawi, the repatriation process is done in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Food Disaster Management to take our citizens back to Malawi.

Zimbabwe does not have holding facilities for immigrants awaiting deportation and as a result, border jumpers are imprisoned.

84 Malawian Border Jumpers Languish In Zim Prisons

Zarah Sultana, the Labour MP for Coventry South has criticised the UK Government for the planned deportation of Joram Nechironga, a 42-year-old Zimbabwean national who served in the British Army from 2002 to 2007, including time on the front line of the Iraq war.
Nechironga left Zimbabwe for Britain in 2001 and the last time he visited Zimbabwe, in 2006, he was tortured as a suspected British spy on account of his army ID.
The father of two was in early March nearly deported to Zimbabwe after he was put on a bus from Colnbrook Immigration Removal Centre in west London destined for Heathrow airport.
The interventions by his lawyer and Sultana, who raised her constituent’s case in parliament, stopped Nechironga from being deported.
Nechironga is facing deportation from Britain as he is classified as a “foreign national offender” following his conviction for drink-driving offences and an assault on a family member.
He was jailed for the offences and was released in 2019. Nechironga and his lawyers claim that these offences were a result of untreated PTSD that developed during his time in the army.
According to an <a href="https://www.psychiatry.org/patients-families/ptsd/what-is-ptsd#:~:text=Posttraumatic%20stress%20disorder%20(PTSD)%20is,sexual%20violence%20or%20serious%20injury.">online source</a>, Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder that may occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, a serious accident, a terrorist act, or war/combat.
Nechironga was on 17 February taken without notice to Colnbrook to be deported but with the assistance of his lawyers, he was granted immigration bail on 10 March.
However, this does not end the threat of deportation. His lawyer Andrew Nyamayaro, is still fighting the deportation order, which remains in place.
Sultana has urged the UK Home Office to cancel the order to deport Nechironga as this puts him at risk of torture in Zimbabwe. She said:

The Home Office’s treatment of Joram has been shocking. Not only are they trying to deport someone whose whole life is here in Britain and who was scarred while serving in our armed forces, but they have also even nearly deported him in ‘error’ — exacerbating his PTSD.
Deporting him to Zimbabwe wouldn’t just tear him from his friends and family, it would put him at risk of torture as well.
Instead of just whipping-up division as usual, for once Priti Patel and the Home Office should do the decent thing and cancel this deportation.

Meanwhile, a Home Office spokesperson said there is no going back on deporting foreign offenders. He said:

The government makes no apology for removing murderers, rapists and child abusers and those with no legal right to be in the UK.
Since January 2019, we have removed over 10 017 foreign criminals.

'UK Govt's Treatment Of Zimbabwean Iraq War Veteran Shocking'

The United Kingdom is reportedly set to deport dozens of Zimbabweans on 2 March this year, in a move campaigners says will rip families apart.
According to Detention Action, a group that is providing support to several Zimbabweans currently being detained, a new deportation flight to Zimbabwe is imminent.
Those at risk of being deported from the UK could be anyone with a 12-month sentence, including those with first time or low-level offences, Detention Centre said.
Reports indicate that with the imminent threat of family life being torn apart, some of the potential deportees have been left to deal with trauma, resulting in self-harm and refusal to eat. Bella Sankey, a director at Detention Action, told The Voice:

Priti Patel’s charter flight regime is a dangerous piece of political theatre that risks mass injustices and returning people to acute danger.

UK Campaigners Fear Another Deportation Flight To Zimbabwe Is 'Imminent'

Disc jockey-cum-businessman, Tichafa Augustine Matambanadzo, popularly known as <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Tich_Mataz">Tich Mataz</a>, has opened up on his time in South Africa and regrets some of the decisions that he made during his time in the neighbouring country.
In a recent interview on Boyz Dze Tonaz TV’s YouTube channel, the 53-year-old television personality said at one point he had 25 sleek, top of the range vehicles and nine properties in South Africa. He said:

When I first left Zimbabwe, I was getting paid maybe $2000 and when I went to South Africa my first pay was R15 000.
Remember I was a businessman as well. I had a communications company, Khulumani Communications, which handled a lot of corporate communications there, I had an investment company, I had a nightclub, I was doing some big deals at the government level, I was buying some fancy cars. At one time, and it was stupid of me, I had like 25 brand new cars.
</blockquote>
Matambanadzo revealed that when he was working for Radio 3, he was offered a job at Radio Bophuthatswana (BOP) in South Africa which he accepted and rose to become one of the hottest DJs in the neighbouring country.
He was, however, deported on 24 March in 1998 after South Africa Home Affairs officials discovered that he had fraudulently acquired a South African identity document and had no valid working permit.
According to South Africa’s Home Affairs Ministry spokesman at the time, Manase Makwela, Matambanadzo had apparently been issued with a work permit on March 31, 1994, which was valid only until March 31, 1995, to work at BOP Broadcasting in Bophuthatswana.
Matambanadzo acknowledged that he made wrong choices and perhaps he should have done things differently at the time. He said:

When you grow up you understand perspective. You begin to see things from an eagle’s viewpoint.
If some guy from Malawi comes into this country and takes over the marketplace, becomes the hottest guy on TV, the very nature of the Zimbabwean or any other human being would be to ask ‘who exactly is this guy? Isn’t there someone else who can do what he does?
I ruffled a lot of feathers and even though I had favour in some of the highest offices the one thing I should have known is that when a king leaves his country for another, he does not remain king even there.
When I got there, I was blinded by all the excitement, money was flowing. I was not able to read what was happening within my surroundings.
So, while I was excited, I was happy and I was doing well, others were not. I could have done things very differently. I could have and I should have.
With his deportation, Mataz’s South African business empire fell to ruins. Over two decades later, he believes he should have invested at home more just in case of a rainy day which, in the end, did arrive.
It was silly and I see it now that I’m older…when you’re young you think the money will never be finished. I had his and hers safe.
My wife had her own safe and I had a jeweller designer… I had three personal houses and for investment, I had another five or six.
So, I had nine or ten houses in total. At the time you’re thinking I’m never going back to Zimbabwe but I should have bought houses here. I did buy for my mother and father for example but I should have done my investment in Zimbabwe.
… I could have interacted very differently with some of the people that I felt were family and friends.
My son is South African, he was born there and at the time there were a lot more reasons why I should have continued in South Africa than being booted out.
It was also a very important life lesson that has reformed and reconstituted the way that I interact and do business. All I can say is watch this space.

Controversial South African opposition politician, Julius Malema, has strongly spoken against calls by some political parties, supporters and civil society organisations pushing for the removal of foreigners from South Africa.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party leader said he would rather lose votes in the 2024 elections than allow millions of Zimbabweans, Nigerians and other nations to return home. In a tweet, Malema said:

Someone said to me ‘if you want us to vote for you in 2024 you must abandon this thing of foreigners’. I’m prepared to go home. I’m fine.
I will never take a platform and denounce Africans. I will never do it. If it means votes are doing, let them go.
I’m prepared to go home. But to take a platform and please the white minority by pointing a finger at other fellow black brothers, I’m not going to do that.
When I see a Nigerian or a Zimbabwean or a Congolese or Ghanaian, I see myself.
The EFF can do internal research to see how much this thing is hurting the EFF, but I am not prepared to take a platform to say ‘foreigners must go home’. I would rather not be the president of South Africa.
I will be the president of my children at home. We will practice Cabinet issues there. I don’ want to.
You mean I should go and tell these hungry Zimbabweans to leave and when I tell them to leave, I send them where.

The issue of foreign nationals living in South Africa, especially those who are undocumented, continues to be a heated debate in southern Africa’s largest economy.
With political parties racing to form coalitions for 66 hung municipalities, two key king markers – Action SA led by former Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba and the Patriotic Alliance led by Gayton McKenzie – have made it clear that no illegal foreigners will be allowed to live in their municipalities.

Malema Denounces Calls for Deportation of Millions of Zimbabweans From SA

A second deportation charter flight to Zimbabwe from the United Kingdom (UK) has been confirmed for 25 August, according to a key campaigner.
Dozens of Zimbabwean nationals are being held in Brook House Immigration Removal Centre and face removal from the UK.
Some of those set for deportation from the UK were convicted of serious crimes including murder and dealing in illicit drugs.
Speaking to The Voice, Zita Holbourne, co-founder and national co-chair of BARAC UK, said some Zimbabwean nationals have already been served removal directions. She said:

The date has been confirmed as there are people in detention who have been given removal notices.
</blockquote>
Holbourne said many of those who were taken off the first charter flight to Zimbabwe last month, have been held in detention and now face removal again.
In July, a charter flight to Harare left with only 14 people on board after several legal challenges.
The flight was originally expected to have approximately 50 Zimbabwean nationals on board.
According to Holbourne, this is just the beginning of a “series of deportations that the government will be implementing.”
She explained one of those facing removal, came to the UK at eight years old and had refugee status before it was revoked.
Campaigners have argued deportations to Zimbabwe should be postponed until the country has stabilised after recent political and social unrest.

Zimbabwean authorities are unhappy with South Africa’s Minister of Home Affairs Aaron Motsoaledi’s decision to repatriate a large group of detainees from the Lindela centre last week.
Motsoaledi ordered the repatriations in response to an escape at the facility earlier this month and some of those who were released were Zimbabweans who committed various crimes and have since been deported.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Nick Mangwana on Saturday said 18 buses carrying some ex-convicts were expected at the Beitbridge border post. He said:
<blockquote>Zimbabwe is expecting 18 buses through Beitbridge between tonight and tomorrow morning. These buses have 476 Zimbabweans deported from South Africa.
A good number of expected citizens are ex-prisoners. They are coming from different detention centres, some for documentation issues.
These are mainly former prisoners; some have different histories from murder, robbery, fraud, housebreaking and documentation problems.</blockquote>
There are concerns that crime in Zimbabwe will spike if South Africa continues wholesale deportations.
Some of the deportees were given a five-year ban on travel to South Africa.

Over 10 000 Zimbabweans have been deported from South Africa since last year. Zimbabweans constitute the second largest number of illegal immigrants living in South Africa.
Since last year, 10 433 Zimbabweans have been deported while Mozambicans form the largest portion of the deportees at 11 534, with Lesotho and Malawi contributing 6 045 and 3 257 deportations, respectively. South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs spokesperson, Thabo Mokgola, said the deportations were in line with the Immigration Act. Said Mokgola:
<blockquote>Anyone found to have obtained any enabling document in a fraudulent manner is dealt with according to the legislative prescripts.</blockquote>

South Africa deports over 10 000 Zimbabweans

South Africa’s City Press reports that Zimbabwean born South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Sawatu) general secretary Zenzo Mahlangu was arrested and deported on Thursday.
Home Affairs acting spokesperson David Hlabane confirmed that Mahlangu had been arrested and deported on Thursday for having fake South African documents. Said Hlabane:
<blockquote>He was deported on the same day, May 4; he chose not to exercise his right to challenge the deportation, but opted to purchase his own flight ticket and depart immediately instead of being deported through Lindela. Home Affairs received information that Mr Mahlangu was in possession of a South African identity document that identified him as a South African citizen by birth, while he actually a Zimbabwean national. The matter was investigated and it was found that the South African identity document through misrepresentation.</blockquote>
However, Sawatu spokesperson Zanele Sabela remained adamant and said that Mahlangu was still in South Africa.

Zimbabwean born SAWATU leader arrested and deported from South Africa for having fake documents

Zambian authorities have deported 62 people including 58 Zimbabweans for overstaying and having improper documentation.
The 58 Zimbabweans who compromise of 51 females and 7 males, were handed over to the Immigration Department at Chirundu Border Post after arriving in two buses. Speaking to The Herald, regional immigration officer Mr Joshua Chibundu confirmed the deportation which took place on Sunday afternoon. However, Zambian authorities could only confirm 51 women caught in a joint immigration and police raid.

Zambia deports 58 Zimbabweans

Bhekitshe Moyo (42) who was originally from Gwanda, Zimbabwe, committed suicide in the United Kingdom after his application to continue staying in that country was rejected and he was threatened with deportation.
Moyo who was a boxer and known as “Tiger” to his friends left Zimbabwe in 2002 on a sports visa (boxing) which he renewed regularly as required and competed in more than 50 professional bouts. He used his spare time to study law and volunteer at boxing clubs, teaching children the sport. He was reported missing on Monday last week after suicide notes had been found at his friend’s place where he had been staying and his body was found in a park in South London.
A <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/the-late-bhekitshe-moyo-appeal" target="_blank">GoFundMe</a> appeal has been launched for donations to repatriate Moyo’s body to Zimbabwe. Zimbabwean man based in UK commits suicide after being threatened with deportation

The South African government has refuted that it is going to start mass deportations of foreign nationals.  The Department of Home Affairs distanced itself and dismissed the messages currently circulating on social media about the removal of foreign nationals.  Zimbabwe has a large South African diaspora and some of the people were concerned about this.
Excerpts of the statement from the Department of Home Affairs reads:
<blockquote>The Department of Home Affairs distances itself from messages circulating on social media networks and Short Message Services (SMS) alleging that it has ordered the immediate deportation of undocumented migrants from Monday 23 January 2017.
We wish to inform the public that such information is false. No such statement was made or issued by the department or any official.
Home Affairs acts consistently within the confines of the Constitution of the Republic and seeks at all times to uphold the rule of law. This would run contrary to the laws of our country to instruct citizens, as purported in the malicious messages, to take the law into their hands and to close companies down without due process
…We want to urge Zimbabweans not to panic and to report any genuine incidents to authorities for further management and to stop speculation caused by false reports on social media</blockquote>

South Africa reassures foreign nationals about deportations, tells them to ignore false alarm

Controversial businessmen <a href="http://iharare.co.zw/latestginimbi-to-be-deported-from-south-africa/">Genius Kadungure</a>, popularly known Ginimbi is reportedly under investigation and may be deported from South Africa.  Kadungure is reportedly facing a lifestyle audit after he stepped on a senior politician’s toes over a woman.  The flamboyant businessman had his passport confiscated by the authorities in South Africa in December.
Kadungure confirmed that his passport had been taken for a few days:
<blockquote>I have heard that funny rumour but I can even send you pictures of my stamped passport to prove that I entered the country legally.
The South African authorities took my passport for a few days and returned it to me after their investigations and I don’t know anything about any politician’s woman.I can travel to SouthAfrica anytime I want.I am clean.</blockquote>
