A farm security guard has been ordered to complete unpaid community service after he set his dog on a 10-year-old boy, resulting in serious injuries, reported <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/thestandard/news/article/200034831/dogs-maul-boys-privates">The Standard</a>.
The court heard that on October 12, the victim and his friends entered Luipaardsvlei farm in Mukono village, Chipinge, with the intent to steal macadamia nuts. They gained access by stretching the farm’s fence.
Security guard Daniel Simango (44) confronted the boys and unleashed his dog on them. The dog attacked the 10-year-old multiple times, inflicting severe wounds on his left thigh and private parts.
Simango was sentenced to 14 months in prison, of which seven months were suspended for five years on the condition of good behaviour.
The remaining months of his sentence were suspended on the condition that he perform 245 hours of community service.

Security Guard Sets Vicious Dog On 10-year-olds

The Ministry of Health and Child Care’s Disease Surveillance Report for the week ending October 13, 2024, revealed that there were 604 reported dog bite cases, with no fatalities, during the week under review.
Among these cases, 113 were attributed to vaccinated dogs, 105 to unvaccinated dogs, and 386 involved dogs of unknown vaccination status.
The highest number of dog bite incidents were reported in Mashonaland East Province (114 cases) and Masvingo Province (87 cases).
Overall, the cumulative total for dog bites stands at 22,383 cases, with no reported deaths.
Here are some tips on how to care for dog bites at home:
<ul>
<li>Place a clean towel over the injury to stop any bleeding.</li>
<li>Try to keep the injured area elevated.</li>
<li>Wash the bite carefully with soap and water.</li>
<li>Apply a sterile bandage to the wound.</li>
<li>Apply antibiotic ointment to the injury every day to prevent infection.</li>
</ul>
To prevent dog bites:
<ul>
<li>When choosing a dog for a family pet, pick one with a good temperament.</li>
<li>Stay away from any dogs you don’t know.</li>
<li>Never leave young children alone with a dog — especially an unfamiliar one.</li>
<li>Don’t try to play with any dog that is eating or feeding their puppies.</li>
<li>Whenever you approach a dog, do so slowly, and give the dog the chance to approach you.</li>
<li>If a dog becomes aggressive, do not run away or scream. Stay calm, move slowly, and don’t make eye contact with the dog.</li>

Health Ministry Records Over 600 Dog Bites In One Week

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has said dog attacks have become a “serious matter”, with some owners of killer dogs having been charged with culpable homicide.
Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/murder-charges-for-killer-dog-owners">The Sunday Mail</a> that some residents are now breeding dangerous dogs, and in some cases, the pets are left unattended. He said:

Some of the dog owners have been charged with culpable homicide.
This has become a serious matter. People are breeding dangerous dogs and instead of exercising maximum caution, they actually leave these dogs unattended, while others do not have the security needed for one to have dogs on their premises.

It is now common for households to own breeds such as the pitbull, boerboel, doberman, bullmastiff, rottweiler and German shepherd.
A community in Southview Park, Harare, is now living in fear of vicious dogs belonging to a family that recently moved into the neighbourhood.
One of the residents claimed they now spend most of the day in their houses for fear of the dogs. Said the resident:

They (the new family) have two big dogs and several puppies, which are making them even more aggressive. The dogs have attacked us on several occasions.
Talking to the owners is not helping, as they have only encouraged us to befriend the dogs to avoid being attacked.
We now spend most of the day in the house, while getting home late at night is now risky.
There is a real possibility of being mauled to death.

Dr. Regis Murwira, a general practitioner, said that there has been an increase in the number of patients being treated for dog bites. He said:

In the past, we would attend to an average of two or three cases per month, but in the last half of 2022, cases spiked to at least seven.
To attend to dog attack cases, the patient should have a police report. We administer rabies injections before attending to the wounds.
For a rabies jab, one should part with at least US$25, excluding the consultation fee.

In 2022, a six-year-old girl was killed by two vicious boerboel dogs while playing in Goromonzi.
Before that, a 70-year-old man died after being severely attacked by stray dogs in Ardbennie, Harare, on his way home.
In 2021, a Grade Five learner died in Chegutu after she was mauled by three dogs on her way to school.

Culpable Homicide Charges For Killer Dog Owners

A Goromonzi man has been arrested and charged with culpable homicide after his two Boer dogs killed a six-year-old girl.
In a statement posted on their social media page, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said that two dogs belonging to Justice Nyamutsamba (40), mauled to death the girl as she was playing with her friends.
Police said they have since killed the dogs and arrested the owner. ZRP said:

The ZRP reports a sad incident in which a six-year-old girl was mauled to death by two vicious Boer dogs whilst playing with friends on 13/10/22 at Dongo Village, Goromonzi.
The Police have since shot dead the dogs and the owner, Justice Nyamutsamba (40) is being charged with culpable homicide. Investigations are underway.

In an unrelated case, police in Chiredzi on Tuesday arrested Serudzai Magadzire (45) in connection with a case of murder which occurred on Monday at Village 3, Wasara Range, Chiredzi.
Police said Magadzire and his accomplice, Kenias Magadzire (21) who is still at large, fatally assaulted Benson Chikati (83).
The duo allegedly accused Chikati of witchcraft before attacking him with catapults and wooden sticks.
The victim passed away while waiting to be taken to the hospital.

Girl (6) Mauled By Dogs, Owner Charged With Culpable Homicide

A Beitbridge man, Proterge Kwangware, narrowly escaped death after a police dog mauled his private parts.
Police officers did not send him to the hospital despite the law stating that people should be treated for dog bites even if the police dog is vaccinated.
The police officers apparently unleashed the dog on Kwangware last Thursday to avenge the assault of a policeman by the suspect.
The issue started as an altercation between Kwangware, a known habitual criminal, with a friend identified as Bright Mapfumo in Dulivhadzimo Township.
An off-duty policeman, Energy Chisora, who was clad in civilian attire, started filming the incident with his mobile phone.
This did not go down well with Kwangware who then slapped Chisora.
Chisora retaliated and the two started exchanging blows but after realising that he was losing the fistfight, the police officer fled to his car with Kwangware in hot pursuit.
Realising that he could be assaulted further, Chisora then produced his police identity card and Kwangware let go and the fight ended.
However, about four days later, police officers kicked open Kwangware’s door while he was in bed with his wife.
The officers unleashed their dog, which mauled him all over his body and his manhood.
Speaking before Beitbridge resident magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba on Friday where he successfully applied for bail, Kwangware said:
<blockquote>
I was in bed and did not resist. I was at their mercy but they let their dog have a go at me.
They failed to control it and it even bit my privates. It bit me all over and they failed to control it. I held its jaws apart to avoid further harm.

The State represented by Pithey Magumula had opposed bail saying Kwangware was likely to commit other offences.
Magumula brought to the court’s attention that Kwangware had a pending case and had just finished a community service sentence.
Kwangware faces an assault charge for allegedly beating his friend.
He was also charged with malicious damage to property for allegedly damaging Chisora’s car during their fight.
However, the magistrate granted the suspect $10 000 to allow him to receive the treatment he was denied by police.
Kwangware was asked to come back to court on 14 July.
