A 62-year-old man from Victoria Falls has been fined ZWL$10 000 for ill-treating a donkey.
Mlele Sibanda from Sizinda Village in the outskirts of Victoria Falls recently appeared before the Victoria Falls resident magistrate Godswill Mevenge charged with animal cruelty.
That was after a welfare organisation found him in a scotch cart being pulled by three donkeys, one of whom was seriously injured on the chest.
Allegations were that on 21 September 2022 and at the 401 km-peg along Bulawayo – Victoria Falls Road, Claire Julie Elhorn was driving her vehicle when she noticed Sibanda in a scotch cart being pulled by three donkeys.
“One of them had severe injuries on the chest which prompted her to file for a case,” prosecutor Bhekimpilo Tshabalala told the court.
In court, Elhorn employed by Animal Welfare of Zimbabwe said the extent of the injuries on the donkey proved that Sibanda had continuously abused the donkey and did not render any medical treatment to the animal.
In mitigation, Sibanda said he was not aware of the extent of the injuries and asked the court to give him a lenient sentence.

Victoria Falls Man Fined $10 000 For Animal Cruelty

A dead donkey was found at the gate of a house in Block 81 in Mpopoma suburb in Bulawayo on Sunday morning, leaving residents speculating about what may have led to the death of the animal.
A resident who only identified himself to Chronicle as Mbono said the donkey may have died to due mistreatment by firewood peddlers who move around the suburb selling firewood. He said:

I suspect this donkey was yoked on a scotch cart and suddenly died. Realising what had happened, those on the cart could have decided to dump it on the roadside, near the gate of this house.
</blockquote>
Mbono drew the Chronicle news crew’s attention to what seemed like drag marks on the road near the place where the donkey was dumped.
Another resident who chose not to be identified for the report said the donkey might have died from being hit with a blunt object. Said the resident:

This donkey was killed by someone who had struck it with a blunt object and decided to dump it here.
</blockquote>
However, some residents dismissed the cruelty theory and suggested that the death of the donkey might be a case of witchcraft gone wrong. Said a resident:

It’s mind-boggling to wake up to a dead donkey at the gate. Someone must have been practising witchcraft and things went south.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, police officers who arrived at the scene examined the donkey’s carcass and concluded that it looked healthy and had no signs of physical abuse.
The City of Bulawayo was notified about the development and residents were waiting for the local authority to remove the carcass.

Donkey-drawn scotch carts have become popular in Bulawayo’s western suburbs, with an emerging trend of young entrepreneurs who have lately resorted to using scotch carts to eke out a living.
The scotch carts are used to transport people from one suburb to another, carrying sand, firewood and farm produce among other goods.
In suburbs such as Pumula South, Pelandaba West, Nkulumane, Luveve 5, and Magwegwe, there are several donkey-drawn cart operators.
The practice is however illegal and the scotch cart operators often have to wait for hours for customers as they have to contend with municipal rangers and police.
In areas such as Cowdray Park, scotch cart operators have taken over the business of transporting sand and firewood.
A scotch cart operator, Emmanuel Sibanda, told Chronicle that most of his business revolves around ferrying people between St Peter’s Village and Pumula and surrounding suburbs and also transporting communal farmers’ produce to the market. He said:
<blockquote>In areas such as St Peter’s, residents are now relying on donkey-drawn scotch carts as public transport operators are shunning the route because of poor roads. We are therefore capitalising on that.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Bulawayo City Council (BCC) officials were adamant that donkeys are not allowed in the city. BCC senior public relations officer Nesisa Mpofu said:
<blockquote>The Bulawayo (Protection of Lands and Natural Resources) by-laws do not allow the keeping of domestic animals on individual properties unless there is authority in terms of the said by-laws, a town planning permission, and Bulawayo (Public Health) by-laws approval. Rangers do attend to reports as they come.</blockquote>
Rangers have issued tickets to the culprits and some animals have been taken to the pound which is at Luveve Gum plantation.
The fine for offenders is $832 and is subject to review at council’s pleasure.

Government has expressed concern over a donkey abattoir being built by Battlefront Investments in Umguza. Government which gave the company the green-light sent Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development Deputy Minister responsible for Livestock, Paddy Zhanda to tour the facility and get assurance that the donkey meat will not be sold in Zimbabwe.
National co-coordinator of the police anti stock theft Senior Assistant Commissioner Erasmus Makodza said that farmers had expressed concern that there will be a rise in donkey thefts in the area. Said Zhanda:
<blockquote>There is a lobby group that is totally against this abattoir and Government’s position is that donkey meat cannot be consumed in Zimbabwe. We therefore want assurance that this donkey meat will not find its way into local butcheries. We therefore have an obligation to put measures in place to ensure donkey meat is not sold in local butcheries.</blockquote>
Yesterday’s visit by Zhanda and his delegation to the abattoir comes a week after a joint statement by Aware Trust Zimbabwe, Veterinarians for Animal Welfare Zimbabwe, Lupane Youth for Development Trust, the Zimbabwe National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Spana criticised the planned slaughter of donkeys for commercial purposes.The abattoir will be the first in Zimbabwe and will have the capacity to dress more than 70 animals a day.

Govt, police express concern over donkey abattoir

Battlefront Investments has started constructing a $150 000 specialised state-of-the-art donkey abattoir in Waterford suburb, Bulawayo that will have a capacity to dress more than 70 animals per day.
Battlefront Investments managing director, Mr Gareth Lumsden said they will be done constructing the abattoir in 2-3 weeks. He said they got approval from Ministers to start construction and will invite a senior Government official to officially open the abattoir. He said that they will be targeting the Asian market. Said Lumsden:
<blockquote>We are targeting China in particular, it is a delicacy there. They eat the meat but the important part is the skin . . . there are 1,8 billion Chinese people and I don’t see anything wrong with them, they eat almost anything.</blockquote>
When contacted for comment by Sunday News, Industry Minister Mike Bimha said he was not aware about the abattoir and its plans to export donkey meat. Agriculture Deputy Minister Paddy Zhanda who is responsible for livestock production acknowledged that he had heard of the development but will get to know more once construction is complete.
