Econet Wireless Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dr Douglas Mboweni has said he had no leadership track record when he was appointed the CEO of the leading telecommunications company.
Mboweni says he detailed his journey and lessons in his new book _A Dusty Road to Success._ He announced on Thursday:

Mboweni succeeded <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Strive_Masiyiwa" title="Strive Masiyiwa">Strive Masiyiwa</a> as Econet CEO in March 2002 and has been at the helm of the company since then.
Since taking over, Mboweni has overseen the growth of what is now the largest telecoms companies in the country, and the one of the largest companies by revenue and profit in Zimbabwe.
This is a unique case in Africa where, usually, the leading telecoms companies are foreign-owned firm.

Econet CEO Mboweni Speaks On His Journey In Book A Dusty Road To Success

Econet CEO <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Douglas_Mboweni">Douglas Mboweni</a> graduated with a PhD in Business Leadership from <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Open_University">Zimbabwe Open University</a>(ZOU) on Friday, the Sunday Mail reports.
Speaking to the publication after the ceremony the Econet leader gushed about his latest achievement and said:
<blockquote>I am grateful to my doctorate supervisors for their guidance, and of course to my family, in particular my wife, for her unwavering support over the years. Lastly, but not least, I want to acknowledge the support and goodwill I always receive from my work colleagues and board, and in particular the encouragement and inspiration I have enjoyed over the years and during the course of my studies, from my group chairman and founder of  Econet, Mr <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Strive_Masiyiwa">Strive Masiyiwa</a>, who in many ways is my role model in leadership.</blockquote>
Mboweni joined Econet in 1996 and assumed the CEO position in 2002.

Econet Boss Graduates With A PHD

Econet Wireless has issued a public notice on the termination of the <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Kwese_TV">Kwese TV</a> Satellite service. The notice is a formalisation of a service that was in effect shut down in November 2018 <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/11/02/kweses-satellite-tv-closes-down/">when customers could no longer watch subscription content,</a> which was pulled immediately.
Also, in July the company announced that Kwese <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/07/04/econet-media-blames-zimbabwes-economic-crisis-for-kwese-business-failure-puts-company-under-administration/">was being put under administration in the country</a>.
Said today’s notice:

Termination of Kwese TV Satellite Service
To our Valued Customers
We regret to announce the discontinuation of the Kwese TV Satellite Service with effect from August 5, 2019. 
The service was offered to our customers by our sister company Econet Media.
We regret to end this service, which thousands of Zimbabweans had embraced and welcomed into their homes and offices as a viable, alternative source of news, sport and entertainment.
The third party content providers, on whose content we rely, require payment in foreign currency. With the prevailing economic conditions in Zimbabwe, and the current business operating environment – characterized by an acute shortage of foreign currency – sustaining Kwese and the Kwese Satellite Service service was no longer viable.
Customers that had subscribed to the service in advance can redeem their credits by dialling *119#
Once again we apologize for ending this service and take this opportunity to thank our customers for their valued support.

When it was still in operation, Kwese was criticised for over-spending money on content like European football and US basketball instead of investing in original content in Africa. The satellite TV space in Southern Africa is dominated by Multichoice which is owned by Naspers.

Telecoms giant, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe is set to pour millions into a project to upgrade its obsolete equipment.
This comes after Econet subscribers have endured frustration over the past several weeks due to intermittent loss of service.
To that end, Econet has engaged ZTE, a leading Chinese multinational telecommunications equipment and systems company, to provide equipment for a network upgrade.
The project was confirmed by Econet Group CE Douglas Mboweni, who however could not reveal the full details of the expected cost. Said Mboweni:
<blockquote>I can’t possibly give you a figure to the work as you might be aware we are in our closed period. We are hoping to announce our results end of May.
We will also then give an update as to what else is happening in our organisation in terms of operations. You will then get your specific answers.</blockquote>
Mboweni said that Econet is experiencing challenges in accessing foreign currency. He said:
<blockquote>Our equipment comes from outside Zimbabwe and foreign currency is a challenge that is facing everyone so we always do our best in terms of actually managing that area so we are in consultation with the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.
We are also looking at any creative way we can actually pursue in terms of actually bringing equipment into Zimbabwe so we talk to our suppliers as well in terms of what can be done.
We have payment plans with our suppliers we always do unfortunately I can’t divulge the details.</blockquote>

Econet To Invest Millions In Network Overhaul

Econet Group Chief Executive Officer, Douglas Mboweni has indicated the company’s plans to upgrade its network equipment. He revealed that the group has engaged ZTE, a Chinese multinational telecommunications equipment and systems company, to supply equipment for a multi-million core network project set to commence soon.
The upgrade is in light of Econet network disruptions lately.

ECONET Set To Upgrade Its Network Equipment

Telecoms giant Econet Wireless Zimbabwe on Wednesday launched the first industrial solar plant in the country at its Willowvale complex in Harare, in a move aimed at fully embracing clean and renewable energy.
The power plant is projected to generate 466KW and will operate under a 25 year Independent Power Producer (IPP) License. Econet expects to provide power for its internal operations and base stations from solar energy.
Speaking at the launch, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe CEO, Douglas Mboweni said:
<blockquote>Our organisation launched a Green campaign in 2018 which has seen the company investing in alternative renewable energies starting with six of our own business premises.
The commissioning of our Willowvale solar power plant demonstrates our focus to ensure that all our offices nationwide transition to clean and reliable energy as rapidly as possible.</blockquote>
Also present during the launch was the Permanent Secretary in Ministry of Energy and Power Development, Dr Gloria Magumbo who had this to say:

Econet Launches 466KW Willowvale Solar Power Plant

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has urged local companies to reduce bank queues by paying their staff through the EcoCash Payroll system. In a statement, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe group chief executive officer Douglas Mboweni said,
<blockquote>Our observation has shown that disbursing staff salaries through banks forces them and their families to spend long periods of time standing in bank queues to access their money. Whereas if we disburse it directly to them, via EcoCash Payroll, they can decide for themselves how much they want to transfer to their banks.
…For example, payments to farmers are being done using EcoCash — to the Grain Marketing Board, Cottco and the tobacco auction floors and too much of the agro and processing industry. NGOs have also been using EcoCash for the past four years to carry out aid-related disbursements to individuals, in mostly rural areas.</blockquote>

Econet Urges Companies To Adopt EcoCash Payroll, Says It Will Reduce Bank Queues Drastically

<blockquote>Mobile telecommunications market leader Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has announced a huge credit scheme that will empower civil servants and all eligible government employees to get new smart phones for free, and then pay as little as $12 per month.
According to the company, the scheme will benefit teachers, nurses, doctors and members of the uniformed forces – the police, the army, the air force and members of the prison services – as well as all employees of the government.
“We are excited to launch this scheme and to make smart phones available to our civil servants upfront, so that they can then pay very, very affordable monthly instalments when they already own the device,” said Mr Fayaz King, Econet’s Chief Operating Officer (COO).
“We are delighted to extend this offer to all civil servants and believe it will be great value for money for them as the festive season beckons,” said Mr King, whose company is in the process of upgrading its entire network to 100 percent 3G coverage by the end of the year.
Econet’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Douglas Mboweni, recently announced that Econet, the largest telecoms company in the country with over 10.5 million connected customers, was in the process of upgrading all its network sites to 3G.
The company, which refers to itself as the Smart Data Network because of its commanding share of the data market, also offers the widest coverage of LTE (Long-term Evolution), or 4G, with over 260,000 LTE customers using the service, according to figures from the sector’s regulator, POTRAZ (Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe).
Announcing the launch of the civil service device scheme, Mr King said Econet had partnered with local smart device companies GTel &amp; Astro to sell the data-capable devices to Civil servants, and – for their convenience – make pay their monthly installations directly through the Salaries Services Bureau (SSB).
“We have partnered with local device companies to offer this service, and we are also working with the Salaries Services Bureau to ensure participating Civil Servants have a hassle-free method of settling their monthly instalments” said the Econet COO.
Confirming the development, Econet’s Chief Marketing Officer Mr Navdeep Kapur said Civil Servants wishing to participate in the scheme would simply need to submit a copy of their national identity document, their army identity card (if they are in the army), their current pay slip and their proof of residence at any Econet Shop to acquire their new smart phone.
“All they need to do is produce a copy of their national ID, their army ID, their current pay slip and proof of residence at any Econet Shop country wide, and walk away with their new smart phone,” said Mr Kapur, adding that there would be no waiting period once all the documentation was submitted.
Econet Wireless, which recently opened a service centre (Econet Shop) at Mabelreign Shopping Centre in Harare, has the largest and widest retail footprint among the three main mobile network operators in Zimbabwe, boasting 112 shops country wide.
Mr Kapur said the Civil Service device credit scheme will make data-capable devices available to all civil servants at affordable prices, and will enable government employees to enjoy high data speeds to be able to access popular data applications such as Whatsapp and Facebook.
“They will also enjoy the convenience of accessing a variety of Econet Apps such as the ‘My Econet App’ which puts several Econet services like checking one’s balance, airtime top up or buying data bundles, accessing self-care services and finding where Econet outlets are located” Mr Kapur explained.
He added that the customers would also be able to access the recently optimized Ecocash App, the Steward Bank App, and the EconetPlus roaming up, among other convenient services, via their smart phones.
Mr Kapur said monthly payments for voice, data and SMS services would start from as low $12 up to $32 per month, depending on a customer’s chosen package.
The latest offer comes on the heels of several data services and packages that Econet has launched in recent years, including Wifi-in-Kombis, that traveling and commuting Civil Servants will be able to access with their new smart phones.
The company said those wishing to be first to take advantage of the offer needed to visit any Econet Shop with a copy of their national ID, their payslip and staff ID so as to get their applications vetted and processed.</blockquote>

Econet launches massive smartphone credit scheme for Civil Servants

Econet Wireless has advised that its mobile money transfer platform, EcoCash, will be down from 10 pm today (Saturday)  to 2pm on Sunday. This is for the company to carry out scheduled maintenance.
Group chief executive officer Douglas Mboweni said:
<blockquote>This is scheduled work we are carrying out on the EcoCash platform. Apart from the EcoCash system, we routinely carry out maintenance and upgrade work on our various network platforms to ensure optimal, robust performance and to guarantee career-grade stability on our platforms.</blockquote>
