The Governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) Dr <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/John_Mangudya">John Panonetsa Mangudya</a> has said the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/07/20/watch-key-things-you-need-to-know-about-mosi-oa-tunya-gold-coins/">Mosia-oa-Tunya gold coins</a> which the central bank intends to introduce on the 25th of July 2022 can also benefit ordinary Zimbabweans.
The central bank announced late last month its plans to introduce gold coins into the market as an instrument that will enable investors to store value. 
According to Mandudya, ordinary Zimbabweans will ”benefit because if we don’t go to the parallel market, the parallel market rate stabilises and the ordinary person will benefit more from the stability that these gold coins, all things being equal, will achieve”. He added:

When there is stability, money will have value and result in stable prices.
</blockquote>
Economist Dr Prosper Chitambara is quoted by The Herald as saying:
<blockquote>
The coins are a noble idea and they offer another avenue for investors to save value as gold rarely goes wrong. It is also interesting that the gold coins will be held for at least six months meaning that those who look to dispose of local currency will definitely reduce money supply.
</blockquote>
The Herald cites economic analyst Tinevimbo Shava as saying the coins definitely need to be scarce in order to increase their demand power from both locals and international buyers, which will help in its pricing in the market. Shava added:
<blockquote>
 As well the bank has done well on the holding period in order to reduce buying and dumping behaviour in the market.
</blockquote>
Gold only lost 3 per cent of its peak international price, year on year in 2021, but looking at the 2022 outlook gold seems one of the most attractive investment options amid increased recession expectations and rising global inflation.
This is happening as the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/07/19/rbz-forex-auction-zimbabwe-dollar-official-rate-19-july-2022/">Zimbabwean dollar continues to shed value</a> against other currencies both on the formal and informal foreign exchange markets.

RBZ Governor Mangudya Speaks On How Gold Coins Can Benefit Ordinary Zimbabweans

Finance and Economic Development Minister, Professor <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mthuli_Ncube">Mthuli Ncube</a> Tuesday said the government would not hesitate to withdraw trading licences of businesses that were selling their commodities exclusively in United States dollars.
This comes after Schweppes Zimbabwe Limited had indicated that it was selling some of its products exclusively in USD despite <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/07/11/govt-reverses-suspension-of-duty-as-company-price-products-exclusively-in-foreign-currency/">paying no duty on imported oranges and grapefruits.</a>
Speaking during a post-Cabinet media briefing in Harare, Ncube said:
<blockquote>
We are quite aware that some retailers are putting stickers to say this product can only be bought in US dollars. I want to make it clear and categorical that it is totally unacceptable, and as a government, we will not allow that.
 We will withdraw licenses, and already we have withdrawn the duty rebate licenses so as to allow companies to import. We will not allow this. They are breaking the law. The law says that citizens or anyone approaching a shop should be able to use currencies within the multi-currency regime. We absolutely cannot tolerate this kind of nonsense.
</blockquote>
Retailers and wholesalers have been charging selected products such as sugar, milk, cooking oil and others in US dollars saying they were ordering the products from manufacturers in US dollars.
Analysts say the local market was self-dollarising raising fears that the local currency could be ditched again. 
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) is against the idea of fully dollarising saying it would worsen the scarcity of foreign currency as the case was around 2016. 
RBZ chief, John Mangudya <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/07/12/zimbabwe-has-no-capacity-to-fully-dollarise-rbz-governor-mangudya/">recently said:</a>
<blockquote>
We do feel the pain of this economy and because we feel the pain of this economy that is why we are doing all we think is necessary for this economy to recover.
This economy has no capacity to fully dollarise. The preference might be there, which is emotional. I feel the emotion but the capacity to re-dollarise this economy is not there.
Zimbabwe will become a supermarket economy (if the country re-dollarises). We have been there before and that journey is a painful journey which as a governor of the Central Bank I will not propose to the August House. It is an easy way out, but the wrong way out.
</blockquote>
Zimbabwe imports most of the goods and services consumed locally hence the high demand for foreign currency. Analysts say the anomaly can only be corrected by reviving the collapsed local industry.

Govt Threatens Businesses For Selling Commodities Exclusively In U.S. Dollars

The government has made fresh moves to control the money supply and stabilise the exchange rate, Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) governor John Mangudya said yesterday.
He was speaking at a webinar hosted by the Zimbabwe Independent in partnership with the Bankers Association of Zimbabwe to unpack the monetary policy statement released last week.
Mangudya said the money it has been supplying to businesses, contractors and farmers has been abused. He said a committee comprising the RBZ and Finance ministry resolved to close taps to control liquidity. Mangudya said:
<blockquote>
Over the past two weeks, the government’s release of funds to the market was so limited to the extent that the parallel market did not move.
There has been a shortage of local currency on the market and that is the reason the parallel market has been stable for the past two weeks, the closed tap other than for salaries, did not see a lot of money coming onto the market.
</blockquote>
He said inflation was a monetary phenomenon related to the rate of circulation of money and the central bank was closely monitoring the two. Mangudya added:
<blockquote>
The parallel market rates are key drivers of the exchange rate, but the key drivers of these rates is not even the government, its business. Unfortunately, what we have noticed is that most of the money that businesses get is coming from the government so the government has got projects like road construction, dam construction and they are paying to the farmers.
</blockquote>
Mangudya said recipients of money from the government should be disciplined.

RBZ Moves To Control Money Supply To Stabilise The Exchange Rate

When the government imposed a lockdown on Zimbabwe as a COVID-19 containment measure, it promised to give <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/03/31/govt-sets-aside-600-million-to-cover-1-million-vulnerable-households-for-the-next-3-months/">$200 to 1 million people for 3 months</a>. However, the government admitted to paying <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/05/26/govt-admits-to-paying-only-200k-of-the-600-million-it-promised-vulnerable-citizens-during-the-lockdown/"> $200 000 of the $200 Million</a> it had promised and the payment was done once and was stopped when the government announced it was suspending some mobile money to facilitate investigating black-market activities among other reasons like <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/06/17/social-welfare-grants-not-reaching-beneficiaries-because-of-data-capturing-errors-govt/">there were errors in the details of the beneficiaries</a> and other reasons.
The government last week made a promise to resume the disbursement again according to The Sunday Mail. Quoting the RBZ Governor Dr John Mangudya, the publication said the government is finalising the modalities to resume the disbursements because the governor said:
<blockquote>The audit is almost complete; we are finalising it. The findings of the audit will inform us on the way forward and how the payments will be done going forward, and we are sure we will be done soon. We are, however, urging the beneficiaries to open bank accounts to ease the challenge currently being faced.</blockquote>

Cash Disbursements To Vulnerable Households Will Resume Soon - Govt Makes Yet Another Promise

The governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, Dr John Mangudya has delivered the Monetary Policy Statement this Monday.
Among other things, Mangudya said that the central bank aims at further bringing down the inflation rate.
The Statement, according to Mangudya, “comes at a time when the main thrust of the Bank is to stabilise the economy by bringing down inflation and to stabilising it, after the initial burst of high inflation that followed from the liberalisation of the exchange rate and fiscal consolidation in 2019.” Read the statement in part:
<blockquote>Stabilising the negative shocks – cost of adjustment – that emanated from the economic reforms that the country went through in 2019 in its quest to right-size or rebalance the economy is necessary for rebuilding confidence within the Zimbabwean citizenry and for creating a conducive economic environment for sustainable growth.</blockquote>

The Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe (CBZ Holdings) has been accused of smuggling new coins to the parallel market money.
The alleged scandal was disclosed by popular twitter who is also a ZANU PF crusader, @matigary who said:
<blockquote>It’s not enough to demand an explanation to these @CBZHoldings seals on the coins.
It would be silly to imagine RBZ did not anticipate that bank notes would not be on the street. This has happened over and over when new notes are introduced. OVER &amp; OVER.
The QN is why was it not anticipated &amp; nipped in the bud. Controls nhai Mangudya?</blockquote>
These reports come after the circulation of a picture of a bin container full of bond coins on social media with some alleging that the bank was pumbping cash into the parallel market.
The central bank, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe this Tuesday introduced $5 and $2 notes, as well as $2 coins and whilst banks, are still issuing limited amounts of money to account holders, currency dealers on the parallel markets seem to be in possession of huge amounts of these new notes already.
