Pay-TV operator MultiChoice, which runs DStv, has issued an apology to its customers for interruptions on its SuperSport Action channel over the weekend.
In a statement released on Tuesday, MultiChoice said that viewers in several African countries faced issues with the SuperSport Action channel during the Chelsea vs. Newcastle match on Sunday, October 27, 2024. It reads:

MultiChoice Africa is aware that viewers in some African countries experienced problems with the SuperSport Action channel on Sunday, 27 October 2024 during the Chelsea vs New Castle game at 15:50 CAT.
It has since been established that during the recent SuperSport channel revamp, technical issues had resulted in certain broadcast feeds being impacted.
SuperSport took immediate steps to isolate the problem and restored the correct feeds to the SuperSport Action channel.
We apologize to all viewers for the inconvenience caused and assure our viewers that the issue has been successfully resolved.

On October 9, 2024, MultiChoice rebranded its SuperSport variety channels across both the DStv and GOtv platforms.
The new channel, SuperSport Action, was launched to offer a wider array of sports content, including UFC matches and additional Champions League games.

EcoCash Partners With MultiChoice Zimbabwe For Convenient DStv Payments

MultiChoice reported a 5% decline in DStv subscribers for 2024 across all packages, with the drop attributed to economic challenges like inflation, rising interest rates, and load shedding.
The overall subscriber base declined by 9%, with a 13% drop in the Rest of Africa and a 5% decrease in South Africa.
As reported by <a href="https://www.iol.co.za/entertainment/tv/local/over-400000-subscribers-dump-dstv-amid-economic-challenges-f257fd1d-2dc5-409f-b061-a55524a0cde5">IOL</a>, in 2023, the total subscriber base was around 8 million, resulting in a loss of 400,000 subscribers over the year.
Multichoice cited declines across all DStv packages: premium tier (Premium and Compact Plus), mid-market tier (Compact), and mass-market tier (Family and Access).
According to their 2023/24 financial year statement, DStv’s overall active subscriber base declined by 5%, dropping from 8 million to 7.6 million.
The premium tier saw a significant decline of 8%, the mid-market tier fell by 9%, and the mass-market tier experienced a reduction of 2%. Calvo Mawela, MultiChoice CEO, said:

Multichoice recently announced that with effect from 01 August 2024, it will increase subscription fees in response to rising operational costs.
The subscription fees for the Premium and Compact Plus packages will remain unchanged at US$75 and US$45 per month, respectively, providing stability for the high-end tier of DStv subscribers.
However, the company said that it will implement modest increases for some of its more affordable packages as follows:

MultiChoice has secured exclusive broadcasting rights to the upcoming UEFA Euro 2024 tournament which runs from 14 June to 14 July 2024.

DStv Secures UEFA Euro 2024 Exclusive Rights

Digital Satellite Television (DStv) has added new channels to selected packages starting from December 1. Yeukai Kupara, Multichoice Zimbabwe’s assistant quality assessor, announced the addition of several channels to different packages to ensure customers can enjoy a range of entertainment during the festive season. Kupara said:

DStv Family subscribers, it is your turn to celebrate. Kix is now included in your package, offering a variety of movies for both adults and children. Action fans don’t miss The Lost Bladesman and Jet Li’s Fist of Legend. These stories of heroism and martial arts will fire up your imagination.

One of the additions is Comedy Central (channel 122), which has been included in the Compact Plus package. Customers can now access a variety of funny content, including stand-up specials, comedy series, and late-night shows. Compact customers will also benefit from the inclusion of M-Net Movies 3 (channel 107), offering action and adventure classics.
Additionally, Africa Magic Showcase (channel 151) has been added to the Compact package, providing top-tier entertainment from across the continent, including soaps, drama series, lifestyle shows, comedy, movies, and reality TV with an African flair. DStv Family subscribers will enjoy Kix (channel 114), which offers a variety of movies for both adults and children, including action films.

DStv Has Added New Channels To Selected Packages

MultiChoice Africa Holdings B.V (MAH) has announced the immediate withdrawal of its DStv services from Malawi. The decision follows an injunction issued by the Lilongwe High Court in a dispute between MultiChoice Malawi (MCM) and the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) over the adjustment of DStv tariffs.
In a statement seen by Pindula News, MAH regretfully informed DStv subscribers in Malawi of the withdrawal of services. MCM said:

<h3>IMMEDIATE WITHDRAWAL OF DSTV SERVICES IN MALAWI </h3>
MultiChoice Africa Holdings B.V (MAH) regrettably notifies DStv subscribers of its withdrawal of services from Malawi with immediate effect. This follows the injunction issued by the High Court in Lilongwe in a matter between MultiChoice Malawi (MCM) and the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) prohibiting an adjustment to the DStv tariffs.
MCM does not offer the DStv service to the public and therefore cannot set or adjust tariffs for this service, a point repeatedly made to MACRA. As a result, the order handed down to MCM is incapable of being implemented by them but carries with it grave consequences for the directors and management of MultiChoice Malawi, including imprisonment. MAH given the impact on its supplier (MCM) and an increasingly adverse regulatory environment is therefore left with no option but to terminate the DStv service indefinitely.
Customers are hereby, and with immediate effect, requested to halt payment for the DStv service. Customers who have already paid their new subscription for the DStv service will have those services honored until the current 30 day viewing cycle ends on or before 10 September 2023. From Wednesday, 9 August 2023, no new subscriptions or reconnections will be accepted. 
MAH would like to thank customers for their support over many years. MAH would also like to thank MCM for their professional conduct in supplying services to MAH over as many years.

DStv’s SuperSport will provide coverage of the 2023 Netball World Cup, which commences in South Africa on Friday through its ‘Here for Her’ channel.
Zimbabwean sports enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the success of the Zimbabwe Gems, the senior netball team.
MultiChoice Zimbabwe’s Public Relations Manager, Liz Dziva, confirmed that all matches would be broadcast on the SuperSport Variety 3 channel throughout the tournament. She added:

DStv's SuperSport To Broadcast 2023 Netball World Cup

Aspiring Zimbabwean filmmakers have just a few days until the deadline closes for entries to the next MultiChoice Talent Factory Academy study year.
The MTF Academy is a regional study facility in which young people hoping to become filmmakers can boost their chances of careers in film-making.
It has been operational since 2019 and has helped create a pool of new talent within the African film and television production industry, having seen more than 120 graduates emerge from the academy into the industry.
Liz Dziva, publicity and public relations manager of MultiChoice Zimbabwe, said the next study year would start in October and applications to be considered for inclusion in the year-long curse would close on Friday (July 14). She said:

The MTF Academy looks for emerging filmmakers with either some industry experience or a relevant post-school qualification in film to apply for an opportunity to hone their television and film production skills in a welcoming and conducive learning environment.
</blockquote>
There are three MTF Academies: one in Lusaka for southern African students, one in Nairobi for East Africans and one in Lagos for West Africans.
A full class is run in each, starting each year in October, and at graduation it is hoped as many of these as possible can find places of career opportunity in the rapidly-growing African film-making industry.
The curriculum is devised with a facilitating partner, the Pan Atlantic University’s School of Media and Communications. Said Dziva:

The students will be given hands-on training in areas such as film directing, sound design, and the business of film, with workplace experience in leading Africa Magic and SuperSport productions.
Students will also get enhanced training experience through the Academy’s partnerships, including those with the New York Film Academy, the Henley Business School, Dolby, and Canon.

Ms. Dziva said various activities had recently taken place to encourage interest in the next class, including promotional events in Highfield, Chitungwiza and Bulawayo.
MultiChoice has been working with previous Zimbabwean MTF students including Rutendo Mahofa Chimwemwe Chipidza and Nkosilesisa Ncube.
They also have had active support from the Zimbabwe International Film Festival Trust, local creatives, Kudzai Madangwa, Alex Gwaze and Collin Nyamuyaruka 
In the current class, which started studying late last year and graduates in a few months’ time, two more Zimbabweans are studying: Marvellous Matswimbo and Simbarashe Nyahwa.

DStv Invites Aspiring Zim Filmmakers To Register For MultiChoice Talent Factory Academy

South African pay-television and streaming company, Multichoice, considers Zimbabwe an important market that is better than Nigeria in terms of repatriation of earnings.
<a href="https://www.iol.co.za/business-report/companies/multichoice-believes-zimbabwe-may-prove-a-better-market-than-nigeria-c9e863ab-fc1f-4904-870d-732f6db91472">IOL</a> reported that Multichoice has over the past year faced challenges in Nigeria, one of its biggest markets, in terms of repatriation of funds.
The company is now banking on economic and monetary policy reforms being implemented by Nigeria’s new President, Bola Tinubu.
Speaking in a recent interview, Multichoice’s chief finance officer Tim Jacobs said:

Zimbabwe is an interesting business for us and we don’t see the same challenges that we are facing in Nigeria.
Zimbabwe is better than Nigeria as we are collecting revenue in foreign currency.

Although Multichoice managed to repatriate cash from Nigeria throughout the year under review, it did so at a “premium” to the official exchange rate.
This is because the Nigerian Naira currency has been highly volatile in the past year as companies have had to resort to the parallel market to purchase US dollars for the repatriation of funds.
However, in Zimbabwe, Multichoice has been protected from this owing to its ability to collect revenues in United States dollars.
Multichoice operates DStv in South Africa and several others across Africa and GOTV in Nigeria as well as an online streaming service, Showmax.
The firm recently said that its rest of Africa operations “delivered a trading profit for the first time” since listing in 2019.

DStv Considers Zimbabwe A Better Market Than Nigeria

MultiChoice is set to launch another Zimbabwean television channel onto the DStv platform, bringing the number of local stations available to DStv viewers to five.
NRTV will be launched on DStv’s channel 288 on Tuesday, June 20, adding a further dimension to the range of Zimbabwean content being showcased on the DStv packages.
NRTV stands for Nkululeko Rusununguko Television. It is owned by Rusununguko Media (Pvt) Ltd, <a href="https://www.techzim.co.zw/2023/02/another-zim-station-nrtv-launches-on-dstv-today/">a company reportedly owned by the Zimbabwe National Army</a> (ZNA).
The station was licensed in 2020 with a promise to offer a diverse and innovative programme range that will enhance viewing enjoyment by local viewers.
Moses Matanda, General Manager for NRTV highlighted that Zimbabweans can look forward to content told differently but relatable globally from a predominantly young and funk, multi-cultural and multi-lingual team. He said:

MultiChoice Zimbabwe general manager Norman Raisbeck said the addition of another Zimbabwean channel was both exciting and satisfying as MultiChoice continues to provide local viewers with more content from which to find a source of locally-selected information, education and entertainment programming. Zimbabwe National Army Launches TV Channel On DStv

Zimbabwe’s sixth television station – NRTV – is set to go on air this Tuesday at 10 AM.
NRTV will officially be launched on DSTV Channel 288 to become the country’s sixth television station.
Four television stations have gone on air since 2020 when the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) awarded six national commercial television broadcasting licences.
The stations are Zimpapers Television Network (ZTN Prime), 3K TV, KeYona TV and Jive TV.
NRTV acting general manager Moses Matanda told <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/media-reforms-surpass-target-as-nrtv-set-to-be-launched">The Sunday Mail</a> that the TV station has been able to create employment for a lot of people. He said:

We are grateful for Government’s efforts to open up the airwaves.
NRTV has been able to create employment not only for those who are directly working for the station but also for independent producers that are also creating employment for creatives across the country.
Most importantly, these television stations are commercial, which promotes fairness and objectivity in the broadcasting of news and information.

Matanda said NRTV offices are in Newlands, Harare, where a state-of-the-art studio is still under construction.
He expressed gratitude to integrated media company, Zimpapers, which owns ZTN, for helping nurture NRTV in its infancy.
Matanda added that NRTV’s programming schedule will comprise 95 percent local content to promote independent local producers.
NRTV stands for Nkululeko Rusununguko Television. The TV station is owned by Rusununguko Media (Pvt) Ltd which is reportedly owned by the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA).

Nkululeko Rusununguko Television (NRTV) Set To Be Launched On DStv

SuperSport viewers on DStv can look forward to riveting football action with the upcoming Nedbank Cup semi-finals starting in May.
Orlando Pirates against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, 6 May. The football action does not stop there, the very next day features giant killers Stellenbosch against Sekhukhune United.
As a bonus for DStv viewers, both the Nedbank Cup semi-finals and the final will also be available to DStv Access customers.
This means the Chiefs vs Pirates playoff will be on 6 May at 15:00 and the Stellenbosch vs Sekhukhune United last-four match on 7 May at 18:00.
The title decider on 27 May will be available to more viewers than ever before.
The action will be broadcast on SuperSports Variety 4, and will additionally be available for streaming via the DStv app.

Nedbank Cup Coming To DStv Access Customers

South African broadcaster, DStv, has secured the right to broadcast the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL).
The development gives Zimbabwe’s cricket fans an opportunity to watch local hero Sikandar Raza live in action in the IPL.
According to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/sport/article/200009585/supersport-to-broadcast-razas-ipl-gig">NewsDay</a>, Raza became the fourth Zimbabwean to sign for an IPL side after Tatenda Taibu, Raymond Price, and Brendan Taylor.
The Indian Premier League is a men’s Twenty20 cricket league held annually in India.
On Friday, SuperSport announced that they will broadcast all the matches for this edition of the IPL. It said:

Following updated conversations with the rights holder, DStv can confirm that all Indian Premier League matches in 2023 will be broadcast on SuperSport.
Your World of Champions SuperSport reached a commercial agreement with the rights holders to broadcast the IPL, starting today (yesterday).

All 74 matches of the 16th tournament will be broadcast live. Marc Jury, chief executive of SuperSport, said:

We are very happy to have reached an agreement to continue our partnership with the IPL that extends back to the inaugural event in 2008.

The opening fixture, between the Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings, was broadcast live on SuperSport.

SuperSport Secures Rights To Broadcast Indian Premier League

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/DStv" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">DStv</a> has made its Zimbabwean viewers a special offer giving them a free upgrade to the next bouquet package at no extra cost, that is, if they keep their subscriptions active from 19 December to 31 January.

DStv To Upgrade Subscribers' Bouquet Packages At No Extra Cost

A sixth BBC channel will be added to the DStv platform in December, adding to the variety, quality and creativity of the British-made content available through the various BBC channels on DStv.
BBC UKTV is cheduled to launch on Thursday, December 15 on channel 134 and would be available to viewers of all bouquets in Zimbabwe, DStv Premium, DStv Compact Plus, DStv Compact, DStv Family, DStv Access and DStv Lite.

DStv subscribers in Zimbabwe now have an additional method for paying their subscriptions, with the inclusion of the Mukuru platform in the methods available for payments.
According to Liz Dziva, MultiChoice Zimbabwe publicity and public relations manager, Mukuru became a channel for subscriptions in November, just in time for the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament, a major focus for the many Zimbabweans who value the DStv offering to subscribers of all the games on several bouquets and up to half the matches on other bouquets. Said Dziva:

Pre-school children are the focus of a new channel, Moonbug launched recently on the DStv platform.
Liz Dziva, publicity and public relations manager of MultiChoice Zimbabwe, said the channel was a showcase for a range of shows suited to pre-schoolers and which have been popular on the YouTube platform. She said:

DStv Introduces New Channel, Hilaal TV

Zimbabwe Newspapers Limited (Zimpapers)-owned television channel, ZTN Prime, was expected to be launched on Thursday, 19 May.
The channel will be available on DStv Channel 294 from 24 May on DStv Premium, Compact Plus, Compact, Access and Lite packages.
Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa, Finance and Economic Development Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube, and Mines and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando were expected to attend the event.
Other expected guests were Information Ministry Permanent Secretary Ndavaningi Mangwana, foreign ambassadors, socialites such as Madam Boss, musicians and corporate executives.

DStv To Launch ZTN Prime On Channel 294

South Africa: DStv’s updated pricing for 2022 took effect yesterday, 1 April, with prices on some services increasing by 4.89%.
The <a href="https://mybroadband.co.za/news/broadcasting/433096-dstv-price-hikes-for-2022.html">average increase across DStv’s pay-TV</a> packages is 2.7%, which MultiChoice highlighted was <a href="https://mybroadband.co.za/news/broadcasting/433610-dstv-price-hikes-from-2000-to-2022.html">significantly less than projected inflation</a> for 2022.

These adjustments will help us to ensure that South Africans continue to enjoy the best value, and unrivalled access to entertainment, anywhere, anytime, and at the most affordable price.

DStv’s Premium and Compact Plus subscribers will pay R10 per month more from Friday — less than a 2% increase in both cases.
DStv Compact subscribers will have to fork out an additional R20 per month, an increase of 4.89%.
DStv also increased the access fee from R105 to R110 but left its Box Office, Showmax, EasyView, and Add Movies pricing unchanged.
The changes apply to DStv’s decoder and streaming-only products.
MultiChoice’s price hikes come after it <a href="https://mybroadband.co.za/news/broadcasting/438376-dstv-starts-limiting-streaming-to-one-device.html">restricted the number of simultaneous streams</a> for DStv.
Since 22 March, DStv subscribers may only stream to a single device at a time. This change did not impact decoder-based viewing or Showmax.

South Africa: DStv Hike Prices Effective 1 April

MultiChoice Zimbabwe has shelved its<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/02/28/dstv-to-close-joina-city-branch/"> plan to close its Harare city centre office in Joina City</a> on the 21st of March 2022.
The company announced in late February that the customer care centre in Avondale would continue to provide a full range of services.
It also said there are a number of accredited DStv agents in the Harare central business district and “these provide the services that until now have been offered at the MultiChoice office.”
But in an update this Friday, in a statement, seen by Pindula News, MultiChoice Zimbabwe said:

DStv To Offer Subscribers Unlimited SuperSport Viewing On DStv App

Political parties in South Africa have criticised MultiChoice’s decision to suspend a Russian news channel on DStv.
Last week MultiChoice suspended the airing of Russia Today, a Russian news television station on channel 407 after Russia invaded Ukraine.
In a statement, Multichoice said, “sanctions imposed on Russia by the EU have led to the global distributor of the channel ceasing to provide the broadcast feed to all suppliers, including MultiChoice.”
South Africa’s ruling party the ANC urged MultiChoice to reconsider its decision, saying it (the decision) has a negative impact on citizens’ freedom of choice. ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe said:

The sanctions imposed on Russia have resulted in the MultiChoice platform unilaterally withdrawing Russia TV from its offerings, impacting negatively the freedom of choice to subscribers and limiting their consumption of news on the developments in the Ukraine-Russia conflict.

Black First Land First deputy president, Zanele Lwana, revealed that the party plans to march to MultiChoice’s offices to lodge a complaint. She said:

As soon as we have finalised our internal processes, we are going to take to the streets at the MultiChoice offices.
We stand with Russia and we take inspiration from them. The West has a vested interest in other countries and is not being condemned for wanting to take other states’ resources.
The west does not care about people’s livelihoods and business, will not start or end by them.
The West and the EU have imposed unreasonable sanctions on Russia and are suppressing dissenting voices to nurse their own interests.
Russia has proven over and over again its alliance with a developing country like South Africa.

SADTU, the EFF, and a civil organisation, The Freedom of Expression Institute of SA, all condemned the move and urged MultiChoice to reinstate the channel with immediate effect.

SA Political Parties Implore MultiChoice To Reinstate Russian TV

Multichoice, DStv’s parent company, on Wednesday, froze RT (Russia Today), a Russian television channel across Africa following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Thursday last week.
The move by MultiChoice comes after the European Union (EU) banned RT and another Russian state media outlet, Sputnik, from broadcasting in the bloc. A MultiChoice spokesperson said in a statement:

In an unrelated development, Multichoice has announced that several eMedia channels will no longer be available on DStv from 31 March 2022.
According to eMedia, the channels to be dropped by DStv are eTV Africa (channel 250), eMovies, eMovies Extra, eExtra and eToonz. An eMediaa message to subscribers read:

DStv will only broadcast the news channel eNCA (channel 403), and it will carry E-tv’s daily Afrikaans news bulletin on kykNET (channel 144).

DStv Removes Russia Today Channel, eTV Africa To Follow

MultiChoice Zimbabwe has announced that it will close its Harare city centre office located at Joina City Centre on 21 March.
In a notice to its customers, MultiChoice said the customer care centre in Avondale will continue to provide a full range of services. Read the notice:

DStv To Close Joina City Branch

Audiences across Africa will have the opportunity to join in on a LinkedIn Live session with the CEO of MultiChoice Africa, Fhulufhelo Badugela, on 16 February at 13:30pm (CAT).
