Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa revealed that Government has abandoned complete dualisation of the Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge highway.
Addressing journalists after Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting, Mutsvangwa said Government will now rehabilitate and widen the highway over the next three years at a cost of $693 million, while dualisation will only take place on some sections of the road. The road will be widened from the current seven metres to 12,5 metres making it at par with the N1 highway in South Africa and the Chirundu-Lusaka Road in Zambia. Sections of the road to be dualised will cost $466 million.
The project will be carried out by local contractors while Government concludes negotiations with Chinese firm Anhui Foreign Economic Construction Group Limited (AFECC). Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Joel Biggie Matiza said first phase which is rehabilitation and widening, has already started with mobilisation of equipment. He said some of the equipment is on site and the contractors are working on detours.

Govt Abandons Complete Dualisation Of Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway

Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Joel Biggie Matiza said that the government has resolved to engage local contractors to dualise the Chirundu-Harare-Beitbridge Highway. According to the Minister, this will allow the country to create jobs for locals and save on foreign currency. However, the government is still seeking a private company to be the principal partner. Said Matiza,
<blockquote>Cabinet decided that the Department of Roads immediately commences work on the road rehabilitation, while negotiations with a private partner continue. There is already $150 million raised through an Old Mutual bond that will help us kick-start works…The government has also decided that local construction companies with the requisite expertise will be engaged as sub-contractors. This decision means as a country struggling with foreign currency issues, we will keep the money in Zimbabwe as well as the jobs…The rainy season is upon us and this road that has claimed so many lives is in a deplorable state. We cannot continue dithering. We cannot remain stuck in talks, while nothing happens on the ground. We must start work and start immediately.</blockquote>

Govt To Engage Local Contractors For Chirundu-Harare-Beit Bridge Dualisation

Responding to questions from delegates to the International Business Conference (IBC) at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) underway in Bulawayo, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga said Government will not tolerate chancers, and put in place measures to ensure that signed capital projects are implemented within specific timelines.
Said Chiwenga:
<blockquote>Cabinet took a decision and the President (Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa) made the pronouncement that the Beitbridge-Chirundu tender has been cancelled. We will not take chancers but serious business people and this time if you want to do business with us you should give us a clear timeline to do that job. It must be time-bound projects where one will be specific. The new dispensation will not tolerate empty ceremonies as they are costly to Government and time wasting.</blockquote>
