A 37-year-old man was crushed to death by a Harare City Council front-end loader vehicle while sleeping at a dump site.
Police said the now-deceased Innocent Mlambo was run over by the vehicle on Saturday, 11 November while sleeping at a dump site at corner Bute and Harare Street.
The body was taken to the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals mortuary.
The ZRP has appealed for information that may assist in locating the man’s relatives. Police said:

Man (37) Sleeping At Dumpsite Crushed To Death By Council Vehicle

The mayor of Masvingo Councillor Collen Maboke has revealed plans by the City of Masvingo to reclaim the Runyararo West dumpsite area by constructing a school.
Speaking to <a href="https://tellzim.com/council-to-construct-new-school-at-runyararo-west-dumpsite/">TellZim News</a> after a Full Council Meeting held on Monday, 03 July, Councillor Maboke said the local authority plans to reclaim the Runyararo West dumpsite which is now being relieved by the Cambria landfill.
He said the former dumpsite had become a health hazard to residents who lived nearby. Said Maboke:

There are no longer any activities of dumping refuse at the old site as we speak, as council we are planning to build a school on that site.
This is not the first time that council builds a school on a former dumpsite, previously there was a dumpsite on what is now Runyararo Primary School so we intend to utilize the land by constructing a new school and recreational facilities for Runyararo West and Victoria Ranch residents.

He said the new landfill started functioning two weeks back relieving the former dump site.
The old dumpsite had for long exposed residents from the two suburbs to foul smells, swarms of flies and smoke that came from burning of rubbish.
Though the council had stopped dumping at the site, there is still a lot of rubbish at the site.

Masvingo Council Plans To Build A School On Old Dumpsite

The Office of the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Harare Metropolitan Province, together with the Environmental Management Agency, has launched an operation dubbed “Zero Tolerance to Environmental Crimes in Harare Metropolitan Province.”
In a statement seen by Pindula News, the Minister’s office expressed great concern about environmental crimes being perpetrated by companies, shop owners, vendors and residents in Harare City. Chitungwiza, Epworth and Ruwa. 
The operation will run for 45 days starting from the 10th of November 2022 to the 15th of December 2022 with the view of extending if the situation does improve. Reads part of the statement:

This Provincial Blitz will target institutions, shop owners, companies, vendors, public transporters, the actual passengers and the general citizenry who violate the statutory requirements. Be warned that in residential areas there will be BLOCK TICKETING of communities that have illegal dumps within their vicinity. So we urge all residents to clear illegal dumps in their areas as they face hefty tickets. This is meant to encourage communities to start protecting and caring about their own environments.
</blockquote>
The operation is launched when undesignated dumpsites are all over the capital. Residents accuse Harare City Council of failing and or neglecting to collect garbage leaving them with no other option.

The Pomona refuse dumpsite, is on fire  since yesterday, posing a major health risk due to the harmful smoke. Its also cause for concern due to the adverse effects it may have on the environment.  The <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Environment_Management_Agency" target="_blank">Environmental Management Agency (EMA) </a>has condemned the dumpsite saying it was illegal.  According to  the city’s acting corporate communications manager Mr Michael Chideme,  the local authority was in control of the situation to avoid fire spreading.
<blockquote>We have cordoned off the area and we are trying our level best to contain the fire so that it does not continue spreading around.
Reports are that the fire broke out at around 2am earlier today and we suspect that the cause of this fire was excessive heat which can easily have ignited the inferno hence our fire brigades are on site and using water and gravel to put out the fire.</blockquote>
