The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA), which manages the Kariba Dam, has said a series of recent earth tremors in Mashonaland West Province do not pose a safety threat to the dam wall.
In a statement issued on Thursday, December 26, ZRA revealed that seven earth tremors have hit the region since December 1, 2024.
ZRA said that, in the interest of dam safety, they focus on the ground accelerations or vibrations generated by the tremors rather than their magnitudes.
The magnitude of an earthquake is a measure of the energy released at the source of the earthquake. Reads the statement from ZRA:

The Zambezi River Authority (the Authority) wishes to confirm that it has noted the occurrence of earthquake incidents in the Kariba and surrounding areas.
The most recent earthquake incident with a magnitude M4.9 occurred at 05:39 hours CAT on 23rd December 2024.
Its epicentre was triangulated to approximately 19km on the SSE direction from Kariba Dam, at a depth of 10km.
This region is located within the Kariba reservoir, directly behind the Antelope Island in Zimbabwe.
Six other earthquake incidents occurred in the Kariba and surrounding areas, as well as the Hurungwe District in Zimbabwe on 7th December (M4.3), 8th December (M4.1), two incidents on 11th December (one M4.3 in Hurungwe area with insufficient details to locate the second one). Two other earthquake incidents occurred on 20th December (M4.4 and M4.7).
The epicentres of six of the seven earthquake incidents that have occurred since 1st December 2024 were located between 19km and 40km SSE of Kariba Town, either within the Kariba reservoir or Charara Safari Area.
The epicentre of the seventh earthquake incident (M4.3) which occurred on 11th December was located approximately 106km away from Kariba Dam in the Hurungwe District of Zimbabwe.
In view of the occurrence of the said earthquake incidents, the Authority wishes to advice its stakeholders and the public at large that earthquakes are primarily reservoir-induced-seismic (RIS) activities that are triggered by not only the presence, but also the water level fluctuations from the drawing down of the Kariba reservoir.
The earthquakes are not only limited to Kariba as they have been reported from the filling and subsequent operation of several other large dams and reservoirs worldwide.
The Authority further wishes to inform its stakeholders and the public at large that in the interest of dam safety, it does not focus on magnitudes of the earthquakes, but the ground accelerations or vibrations that are generated from the event.
The vibrations/shacking are further influenced by such characteristics as distance and depth of the epicentre.
Therefore, an earthquake with a smaller magnitude but with its epicentre closer to the dam wall could be more damaging than a large earthquake with an epicentre located far away from the dam wall.
Within this context, the earthquakes that have been experienced in Kariba, Siavonga and surrounding areas since the construction of the Kariba Dam are relatively small and have not generated large ground accelerations or vibrations as to cause concern regarding the safety of the dam wall.
As part of emergency preparedness and Standing Operating Procedures (SOP) requirements regarding the operation of Kariba Dam following the occurrence of unusual incidents, the Authority inspects the dam and analyses data from the various dam monitoring instruments each time that there is an occurrence of an earthquake incident including that which took place on 23rd December 2024.
The inspections and analyse is of data from the various monitoring instruments after the earthquakes referred to above did not reveal any unusual observations and the dam continued to exhibit normal behaviour that is consistent with prevailing loading conditions.
The Authority further wishes to reiterate its commitment to carrying out and delivering on its mandate in respect of ensuring that the long-term safety and reliability of the Kariba Dam is maintained for public safety and for the benefit of the Republics of Zambia and Zimbabwe and the region at large.

No Threat To Kariba Dam From Recent Earthquakes, Says ZRA

A moderate magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck approximately 17 km South-Southeast of Kariba, in Mashonaland West Province, early on Monday morning. The quake occurred at a depth of 10 km at 05:39 AM (Harare Time) on December 23.
According to a report by <a href="https://www.volcanodiscovery.com/earthquakes/quake-info/10045592/mag5quake-Dec-23-2024-Zimbabwe-Zambia.html">Volcano Discovery</a>, which cites data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the details of the earthquake are as follows:

The earthquake occurred just three days after a magnitude 4.6 quake struck 26 km southeast of the resort town.

Earthquake Near Kariba Causes Moderate Shaking

Two moderate earthquakes struck Kariba last Thursday leaving the community shaken and deeply unsettled.
The first tremor, measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale, hit around 3:00 AM, followed by a second earthquake of magnitude 3.7 at approximately 9:36 AM.
Both earthquakes were strongly felt in Kariba town, especially in areas close to the dam wall, where the tremors seemed more intense.
Residents who spoke to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200036041/kariba-residents-rattled-by-twin-earthquakes">NewsDay</a> described the experience as both frightening and unsettling.
A resident, Tracy Martin said there was a loud rumbling and the ground shook. She said:

I was in my house when the first earthquake struck. The ground was shaking, and I heard a loud rumbling noise. It was very scary.

Another resident said: “We felt the earthquake and buildings were shaking while most people were awokened by the incident”.
According to the Meteorological Services Department (MSD), the earthquakes were of moderate magnitude and no reports of damage were received.
The Kariba region has experienced increased seismic activity due to the presence of the Kariba Dam.
The dam, one of the largest man-made lakes in the world, has been associated with induced seismicity since its filling in the 1960s.

In the capital of Zimbabwe, Harare, 486 km away from the epicentre, the earthquake could not be felt.
Some of the places that might have been affected by the shaking include Gwanda in Mat’ South, 110km away; Louis Trichardt, 142km away in Vhembe, Limpopo, South Africa; Selebi-Pikwe, 154km away from the epicentre in Botswana; Bochun, 157km away, in Capricorn, South Africa; and Thohoyandou in Vhembe, Limpopo, 168km away from the epicentre, among several other places in South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe.
Earthquakes and tremors in Beitbridge primarily result from tectonic processes related to the East African Rift System.
This region is characterised by the movement of tectonic plates, leading to faulting and volcanic activity.
Local geological features and human activities, such as mining, can also contribute to minor seismic events.
The interactions between the African Plate and the smaller plates in the region create stress and release energy, resulting in earthquakes.

A medium-sized earthquake happened near Beitbridge, a town in Zimbabwe. It happened on September 21, 2024, at 01:06 AM. The earthquake had a magnitude of 4.3 and was 10km below the surface. Beitbridge felt the shaking the most, but people in Harare did not feel it at all. Other nearby towns in South Africa and Botswana might have felt some shaking too. The earthquake was caused by the movement of tectonic plates and other geological factors in the area. This is not unusual in this region because of the East African Rift System.

Moderate Earthquake Strikes Northwest of Beitbridge

More than 1 000 people are reported dead after a strong earthquake of magnitude 6.8 struck central Morocco just before midnight on Friday.
Tremors were felt in several areas of the country from Casablanca to Marrakesh, where many buildings have been destroyed or severely damaged.
Tremors were also reportedly felt in the capital Rabat, some 350km away, as well as Casablanca and Essaouira, as well in neighbouring Algeria.
<a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-66759069">BBC</a> reported that the quake struck at 11.11 PM local time on Friday, with its epicentre in the High Atlas Mountains, 71km southwest of Marrakesh, the fourth largest city in Morocco.
The epicentre is the location on the surface of the Earth directly above where the earthquake starts.
A 4.9 aftershock was recorded 19 minutes after the earthquake.
Many of the victims are believed to be in hard-to-reach mountain areas. Many people are still believed to be under the rubble amid efforts to find and rescue survivors.
Morocco’s interior ministry said the earthquake killed people in the provinces and municipalities of al-Haouz, Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua and Taroudant.
At least 1 200 people have been injured according to officials.

More Than 1 000 Dead As Earthquake Strikes Morocco

A minor earthquake hit the Lubimbi area in Binga on Sunday night and was felt by residents in Hwange.
The earthquake had a magnitude of 4.0 and no damages to property were recorded, reported <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/earth-tremor-hits-hwange/">the Chronicle</a>.
Matabeleland North Province chief meteorological officer Austin Masikinye said the epicentre of the earthquake was Lubimbi in Binga District, close to Kamativi. He said:

An earthquake was felt in Hwange and Binga on March 5, 2023, at 2309hrs local time. The epicentre is in Binga, Lubimbi area near Kamativi.
No reports of damage were received, however, more inquiries would be made to determine its intensity in the locality and to determine the exact areas it was felt.

Residents in almost all Hwange town suburbs said they were shaken by underground movements on Sunday night.
Nolwandle Moyo from Ngumija and Prisca Mpofu, a resident of Cinderella township, about 10km from Ngumija, both said they felt the unusual movement from underground just after 10 PM.
Hwange Local Board spokesperson Dumisani Nsingo, who stays in Empumalanga, said:

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck South-Eastern Turkey and Northern Syria last month, killing 50 000 people, among them Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu.
MSD head of forecasting, James Ngoma said earth tremors are common in the Kariba area. He said:

Kariba is in a seismic tremor area, so now and again earthquakes are recorded. Those below 2.5 on the Richter scale may not be felt by humans but our machines regularly pick on those.
Earthquakes of between 2.5 and 4.5 on the scale are usually felt but we consider them to be minor and cannot cause damage. Anything above that is of concern.

Minor Earthquake Hits Binga, Felt In Hwange

A 17-year-old girl has been rescued 248 hours after last week’s devastating earthquakes in Turkey, reported <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-64662941">BBC News</a>.
The injured Aleyna Olmez (17) was pulled from the ruins of a flattened apartment block in Kahramanmaraş, a southern city near the epicentre, after surviving freezing weather conditions, for 10 days.
Speaking to the AFP news agency, Ali Akdogan, a coal miner who took part in the rescue, said:
<blockquote>
She looked to be in good health. She opened and closed her eyes.
We have been working here in this building for a week now… we are happy whenever we find a living thing – even a cat.
</blockquote>
In the same city, three women and two children were found alive on Wednesday.
More than 41 000 people have died in Tukey and neighbouring Syria from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake.

Turkish Girl Survives 10 days under Earthquake Rubble

The death toll from the earthquake in Turkey and Syria this week has surpassed 15,800.
According to officials at least 12,873 people have died in Turkey. Syria so far has confirmed at last 2,950 dead.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has faced criticism over the government’s slow response to the disaster. People in the country complained of a lack of equipment, expertise, and support. The president has admitted that his government’s response was slow in search and rescue efforts.
Meanwhile, Syria’s ambassador to the United Nations admitted the government had a “lack of capabilities and lack of equipment,”. He blamed American and European sanctions and more than a decade of civil war in his country. Aid agencies are particularly worried about northwestern Syria, where more than 4 million people were already relying on humanitarian assistance. 
Freezing weather conditions are further endangering survivors and complicating rescue efforts, as more than 100 aftershocks have struck the region.
In Turkey, Erdogan declared a state of emergency in 10 provinces and sent troops to help.
The 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and Syria on Monday 6 February. Thousands of buildings collapsed in the two countries. Many who were asleep when then the earthquake struck were buried beneath the rubble.
The death toll is expected to top 20,000.

Turkey & Syria Earthquake Death Toll Nears 16,000

More than 2 300 people have been killed and thousands others injured by a magnitude 7.8 earthquake, followed by a magnitude 7.5 tremor, in Turkey and Syria.
The earthquakes have killed at least 1 498 people in Turkey, with another 810 confirmed fatalities in Syria, putting that toll at 2 308, reported <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/2/6/what-is-happening-in-turkey-and-syria">Al Jazeera</a>.
The death toll is expected to rise as experts warn that aftershocks could continue for days or weeks.
The earthquake occurred at 4:17 AM (01:17 GMT), with its epicentre in Kahramanmaras in Gaziantep province, about 33km (20 miles) from the capital city of Gaziantep.
The city is home to more than two million people, including hundreds of thousands of Syrians who fled during the country’s war, which began in 2011.
According to the US Geological Survey agency, the area contains many buildings constructed of brick masonry or brittle concrete, making them “extremely vulnerable to earthquake shaking”.
The earthquake was about 50km (31 miles) from the border of northwest Syria, where about 1.7 million internally displaced Syrians live in a cluster of camps.
The area is controlled by opposition groups still fighting the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Several large government-controlled cities, including Aleppo, with a dense population of nearly 2 million, are located in the area.
The Syrian Civil Defence, a rescue group operating in the opposition-held portions of northern Syria, declared a state of emergency and appealed to the international community to support Syrians.
More than 40 aftershocks were felt after the initial quake, including one with a magnitude of 7.5 that hit at 1:24 PM (10:24 GMT) four kilometres (2.5 miles) south-southeast of the town of Ekinozu.
Chris Elders, professor at the School of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Curtin University in Perth, Australia, told Al Jazeera that the depth of the earthquake, at about 18km (11 miles) deep, made the incident particularly devastating. He said:

… the energy that’s released by the earthquake will be felt quite close to the surface with much greater intensity than if it was deeper in the crust.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Nilüfer Aslan, a resident of Nadana in Turkey, told <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-64537446">BBC News</a> that she was certain her family would die when the quake shook their fifth-floor apartment. She said:

I have never seen anything like this in my life. We swayed for close to one minute.
[I said to my family] ‘There is an earthquake, at least let’s die together in the same place’… It was the only thing that crossed my mind.

Magnitude 7.8 Earthquake Kills More Than 2 300 People In Turkey, Syria

An earthquake has hit <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Kariba">Kariba</a> and the surrounding areas with the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) of Zimbabwe estimating that the epicentre was approximately 50km South of Kariba Dam near Bumi Hills. A statement seen by Pindula News says earthquakes are a common phenomenon in the area. Reads the statement:

An earthquake of magnitude M4.3 occurred and was felt in the Kariba and surrounding areas at 22:03 hours (10PM) on 2 August 2022. The epicentre was triangulated by the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) of Zimbabwe to approximately 50km South of Kariba Dam near Bumi Hills. Although this is a naturally active seismic area, it started experiencing increased seismicity after the filling of Lake Kariba in the 1960s. Accordingly, the earthquakes are normal and expected. They are referred to as “reservoir-induced tremors” because they are attributed to the presence of the lake.
In the last twelve months, two earthquakes of equivalent magnitudes and several others of smaller magnitudes occurred south of the Kariba Dam. Of note are magnitude M4.5 and M4.6 earthquakes that occurred on 9 August 2021 and 24 May 2022, with epicentres near Binga and below the Lake respectively.
We wish to assure the public and those domiciled in and around the affected areas that tremors of this magnitude are not expected to affect the structural integrity of the Kariba Dam. We further confirm that there were no unusual observations made from the inspections that were carried out on the morning of 3rd August 2022 nor from the analysis of dam safety data that is collected from several instruments that monitor the behaviour of the dam.

Kariba Hit By An Earthquake

A 4.5 magnitude earthquake hit areas around Lake Kariba in the early hours of Monday.
The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) said the earthquake was felt on Monday around 03:39 am in Binga, about 15km from the lake.
Preliminary reports from the MSD stated that staff at the department’s stations in Binga felt the vibrations and a number of people whom they talked to over the phone confirmed.

Kariba Hit By A 4.5 Magnitude Earthquake

A 3.9 Eathquate hit the town of Kariba this morning, The Herald reports. The epicentre of the earthquake was determined to be in Kariba Dam. According to the Meteorological Services Department:
<blockquote>An earthquake of magnitude 3.9 was felt in Kariba Urban and surrounding areas today on 22 June 2020 at 07:11 local time.
The determined earthquake parameters show that the earthquake occurred at Latitude -16.678S and Longitude 28.581E.The epicentre is in Kariba Dam and it was widely felt in Kariba urban.
No reports of damage were received however more inquiries would be made to determine its intensity in the locality and to determine the exact areas it was felt.
Most of the earthquakes in this region are attributed to the reservoir/dam and they are called reservoir induced earthquakes. The seismic activity arises as a result of the impoundment (confinement of water in a reservoir) of the dam</blockquote>
The publication claimed the earthquake is attributed to the upward or downward variation in water levels in Lake Kariba. According to the Zambezi Water Authority, water levels at the dam have continued to rise for the past 2 months:
<blockquote>The Lake level has continued rising steadily, closing the period under review at 481.22m (40.97% usable storage) on 18th June 2020. Last year on the same date, the Lake level was at 479.63m (29.12% usable storage)</blockquote>

Kariba Hit By A 3.9 Magnitude Earthquake

Environment, Water, and Climate Minister Oppah Muchinguri has revealed that the government has set up an Earthquake Committee saying the country was now regarded as highly vulnerable across the globe.
The committee consists of:
<ul>
<li>Dr. Dumisani Hlatywayo</li>
<li>Dr. Teddy Zengeni</li>
<li>Mr. Tatenda Kwangwari</li>
<li>Dr. Vunganai Midzi and</li>
<li>Mrs. Rebecca Manzou.</li>
</ul>
Said Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri:
<blockquote>We are gathered here to interrogate and come up with scientifically backed answers as to why Zimbabwe has been frequently experiencing earthquakes.
My ministry has been inundated with queries and request for these answers and this is because my ministry through the Meteorological Services Department is responsible for monitoring and advising the Government on matters relating to earthquakes.
Our search for answers lies with the academia, research institutions and other relevant Government departments to look deeper into the issue of earthquakes in the country.
The findings of this research will help us in improving our knowledge on the sources and effects of earthquakes affecting us.The study will help in the mitigation of seismic hazards.</blockquote>
