A 34-year-old man from Nyanga has received a wholly suspended 12-month prison sentence for unlawfully diverting electricity to his tuckshop.
Bright Maturura appeared before the Nyanga Magistrates’ Court, charged with violating the Electricity Act (Chapter 13:19).
The court heard that in July 2020, at Matema Business Centre in Nyanga, Maturura had directly connected a power cable from the grid to his tuckshop.
On December 14, 2023, ZESA employees discovered the illegal connection and apprehended him. His actions resulted in a loss of US$8,712 for ZESA.
The court sentenced Maturura to 12 months in prison, wholly suspended on the condition that he completes 420 hours of community service at Matema Primary School.

A man named Bright Maturura stole electricity from ZESA for his tuckshop. He was caught and sentenced to 12 months in prison, but the sentence was suspended. Instead, he has to do community service at a school. ZESA lost US$8,712 because of his actions. Maturura broke the law and had to face consequences for what he did.

Tuckshop Owner Steals Electricity From ZESA Worth US$8,712

Kudakwashe Choga, a 50-year-old resident of Mvuma, recently appeared in court for stealing 364 units of electricity from the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), a subsidiary of ZESA Holdings.
Choga was charged in the Mvuma Magistrates’ Court with violating the Electricity Act, which prohibits the unlawful abstraction or diversion of electricity current.
The Act states that it is illegal to “abstract or divert any electric current or cause any electric current to be abstracted or diverted, or knowingly use any electric current which has been unlawfully abstracted or diverted.”
The court heard that from March 26 to May 2, 2024, Choga tampered with the electricity line conductor supplying power to his meter.
He connected the conductor directly to his load, effectively bypassing the meter and avoiding payment for the electricity consumed.
As a result of his actions, Choga caused ZETDC to suffer a loss of 364 units of electricity, valued at ZWL$1,237.60.
He was sentenced to six months in prison, with four months suspended on the condition that he restitutes the ZWL$1,237.60 by November 30, 2024.

A 50-year-old man named Kudakwashe Choga from Mvuma stole 364 units of electricity from ZESA. This is against the law. He tampered with the electricity line to bypass the meter and not pay for the electricity he used. As a result, ZESA lost money. Choga was sentenced to six months in jail. He can avoid two months of jail time if he pays back the money he owes by a certain date. It is important to follow the law and pay for the services we use.

Mvuma Man (50) Jailed For Stealing 364 Units Of Electricity From ZESA

A 41-year-old man from Zvishavane, Midlands Province, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the vandalism of electricity infrastructure.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Emmanuel Sibanda (41) was brought before the Zvishavane Magistrates’ Court on charges of contravening the Electricity Act.
Specifically, Sibanda was accused of cutting, damaging, destroying or interfering with apparatus used for generating, transmitting, distributing or supplying electricity. The NPA said:

On the 4th of June 2024 at around 2000 hours the accused person proceeded to Shabanie Mine in Zvishavane where he unlawfully cut 4×2.5 meters copper bars, clamps, 3×3 metersx50mm blue copper cables, 3×3 metersx50mm yellow copper cables, 3×3 metersx50mm red copper cables and 2×1 meterx 16mm naked copper cables.
Security officers from the mine heard a noise and went to investigate. They managed to apprehend the accused person leading to his arrest. The total value stolen was USD897-18 and all was recovered.

On Monday, August 26, ZESA Executive Chairman Sydney Gata told the media that the continuous vandalism of electricity infrastructure is hampering ZESA’s operations across the country.
Gata revealed that over the five years up to June 2024, a total of 7,186 cases of vandalism have been recorded, translating to a cost of US$24.4 million.
The vandalism and theft have targeted a range of critical electricity assets, including copper and aluminium conductors, cables, transformer oil, pylons, and transformers.

A man from Zvishavane, Emmanuel Sibanda, was sent to jail for 10 years for damaging electricity equipment. He cut copper bars and cables worth $897 from Shabanie Mine. The theft was stopped by security guards. This kind of vandalism costs ZESA, the electricity company, a lot of money and affects their services. In the past five years, over 7,000 cases of vandalism have been reported, costing them $24.4 million. Vandalism like this hurts the country's electricity supply and causes problems for everyone.

Zvishavane Man Sentenced To 10 Years In Prison For Cutting Electricity Wires

A police officer was arrested for allegedly stealing copper cables and solar panels from President Mnangagwa’s Precabe Farm and neighbouring Brownland Farm in Kwekwe, <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/cop-arrested-for-stealing-from-president-mnangagwas-farm/">reported the Chronicle</a>.
The suspect, Musa Mukuli (40), is a police intelligence member based at the Nehanda Police Camp.
It is alleged that Mukuli and three other accomplices who are on the run, stole copper cables from the two neighbouring farms in the Sherwood Block.
The suspects pounced on Precabe Farm and stole copper cables but Mukuli was nabbed by alert security details when the gang tried to steal the solar panels from Brownland Farm.
Mukuli appeared before Kwekwe Magistrate Samukelisiwe Gumbo for contravening provisions of the Electricity Act and was remanded in custody to 22 September.
Prosecuting, Michelle Daraja said that on 07 September, Mukuli and three accomplices, Brandon Ncube, William Wurayayi and one Jameson went to Precabe Farm where they stole copper cables from a water pump house.
While in the act, they were interrupted by alert security details but three others managed to escape.
Mukuli was apprehended but he wrestled with and overpowered the security details until he managed to escape.
On 14 September at around 11 PM, the gang connived to steal solar panels from Brownland Estate Farm. Said Daraja:

The four accused persons went to the mentioned farm and removed and took 3×335 watts solar panels supplying power to the borehole. They hid the panels in a nearby bush.
They were, however, spotted by the security details from neighbouring Precabe Farm who tracked them down.
</blockquote>
The court also heard that as the suspects attempted to board their getaway Honda Fit vehicle, the security details pounced and managed to apprehend Mukuli while three others escaped.
Mukuli indicated that they had hidden the solar panels in a bush near the scene and this linked them to the copper cables theft.
The security details handed over Mukuli to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Kwekwe leading to his subsequent appearance in court.
