The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority on Wednesday, 09 October killed a problem elephant that had been terrorising communities and destroying mango fruits in Hwange.
Ingagula councillor Brian Chikumbo confirmed the shooting of the elephant to <a href="https://vicfallslive.co.zw/problem-elephant-shot-in-hwange/">VicFallsLive</a>. He said:

We have been having some human-wildlife conflicts of late, whereby jumbos, more than four herds, have been coming into the community around 7 pm every day and even inside people’s houses. It had become unbearable, and very soon we could have recorded a fatality.
We just want a lasting solution because we fear that one day we might have a fatality as the numbers and teams are increasing every day.

Farai Maguwu, the founding Director of the Centre for Natural Resource Governance (CNRG), expressed deep concern over the “senseless” killing of elephants, arguing that there is an urgent need to conserve biodiversity. Said Maguwu:

If [the government] really cared about conservation and biodiversity they would take action against rampant destructive mining taking place everywhere in Zimbabwe.
To have the same officials suddenly showing concern for conservation by killing elephants is ridiculous. Some of us are not fools.
According to Zimparks, crocodiles are the number one killer in Zimbabwe followed by elephants. Why are we not seeing the Zimbabwe government going after crocodiles if it is concerned about people? Stop this criminal activity.

An elephant cow was shot dead on the streets of Victoria Falls today (yesterday) leaving her three orphaned calves.
This has caused an outcry. The elephant was just eating some plants outside someone’s garden and it was shot by parks rangers at 5 AM.

However, Zimparks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo defended the decision to kill the elephant, saying it had posed a threat to human life. Said Farawo:

Yes there was an incident of elimination of an elephant, human life was under threat and normal in this is part of our wildlife control measures.
I do not know how they come to the conclusion that this elephant had three young calves.
You know we do not use emotions when we deal with these things. We deal with facts.
The fact still remains when human life is under threat, that is how we react and we are not apologetic.
I think it’s not right for people to invoke emotions around problem animals control.
When human life is under threat we react, its provided for in our policy and legislation and that is what we have done.
How do they prove that this is the calf of the eliminated elephant, they are just playing games.

Zimparks Rangers Kill Problem Elephant In Victoria Falls

Zimbabwe plans to cull 200 elephants to manage an increasingly large population, with the meat distributed to communities frequently impacted by human-wildlife conflict.
In a statement to Parliament last week, Environment, Water and Climate Minister Sithembiso Nyoni claimed that Zimbabwe has “more elephants than it needs,” and announced that the government had directed the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority (ZimParks) to initiate the culling process.
ZimParks Director General Fulton Mangwanya indicated that the culling would occur in areas where elephants have clashed with humans, including Hwange, which is home to the country’s largest elephant population.
Speaking to the Voice of America, Minister Nyoni said:

We are having a discussion with ZimParks and some communities to do like what Namibia has done so that we can cull the elephants and mobilise the women to maybe dry the meat, package it, and ensure that it gets to some communities that need the protein.

Zimbabwe, which is estimated to be home to around 100,000 elephants, last culled elephants in 1988.
However, some experts dispute this figure, suggesting that the true population is closer to 50,000, as elephants frequently move across national boundaries.
This month, Namibia reported that it had already culled 160 wildlife animals as part of a planned cull of over 700, which includes 83 elephants, in response to its worst drought in decades.
Both Zimbabwe and Namibia, along with other countries in southern Africa, have declared a state of emergency due to the ongoing drought conditions.
Farai Maguwu, director of the nonprofit Centre for Natural Resource Governance, is among those who have condemned the decision to cull 200 elephants. Zimbabwe Set To Cull 200 Elephants

A woman from Number 3 Makwika Village in Hwange, Matabeleland North Province, who is believed to be in her 40s, was airlifted to Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo after being attacked by an elephant.
Loveness Ncube was reportedly picking charcoal from an old mine dumpsite when the elephant attacked her, breaking her spine.
Ncube was first taken to St Patrick’s Hospital, but her condition was critical, so she was later transferred to the hospital in Bulawayo.
The director of the Green Shango Environment Trust, Daniel Sithole, posted on X (social media) that human-wildlife conflicts will increase due to climate change. Said Sithole:

A sad event occurred in Hwange when an elephant tramped Loveness Ncube. This emphasises how urgently the bill needs to be amended in order to assist those who have been harmed by conflicts between people and wildlife.
For her transfer to Bulawayo, she is having difficulty raising the ambulance fees. The fact that wild animals have an ambulance but human victims do not have one is shocking. These conflicts will only grow more frequent as climate change becomes more severe.

Women Coalition of Zimbabwe chapter chairperson for Hwange Sithembinkosi Ndlovu said women are at higher risk as they fend for families. She said (via <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/hwange-woman-airlifted-to-bulawayo-hospital-after-being-trampled-by-elephant/">Chronicle</a>):

There is a need to hold people involved accountable but authorities would argue that she was trespassing in a private concession area.
So as women, we would like to say they should prioritise life so that at least she gets treatment since she is not a Hwange Colliery employee who can access services at the Colliery Hospital.
The Parks and Wildlife Management Bill whose provisions will be compensation in such circumstances is still being debated so such cases may not even get help.
We also want to put it that proposals for victims to apply for the fund will not work because the person who needs help will be bedridden and in urgent need of treatment.

The animals are wandering into areas where people live because the bush has been taken over by open-pit mining, especially in the Table Mine area.
This has blocked the paths that the animals used to move through, causing more conflicts between people and wild animals.

Hwange Woman Airlifted To Bulawayo Hospital After Elephant Attacked

A US tourist from New Mexico was killed by an elephant in Zambia on Wednesday after it attacked her vehicle while parked during a safari drive in Zambia.
This comes as Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana have raised concerns about increasing elephant populations in their respective countries, which has resulted in rising cases of human-wildlife conflict.
According to <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cx99z2k1wzro">BBC</a>, the elephant pulled Juliana Gle Tourneau, 64, out of the vehicle and trampled her.
Tourneau was with a group that had stopped near the Maramba Cultural Bridge in Livingstone due to traffic from an elephant herd when one of the animals attacked.
This marks the second fatal elephant attack on a US tourist in Zambia after Gail Mattson, a 79-year-old woman from Minnesota, was killed during a game drive in the Kafue National Park in March.
Video of the attack later emerged and showed an elephant charging towards the vehicle. None of the vehicle’s occupants are seen in the video, but someone can be heard saying “Oh my goodness,” and “It’s coming fast”.
The vehicle stops and the elephant hooks its tusk onto the vehicle and it rolls several times. Mattson was killed in the incident and five other people were injured.
Rona Wells, Mattson’s daughter, wrote on Facebook that her mother died in a “tragic accident while on her dream adventure”.
Zimbabwe has also recorded deadly elephant attacks in recent years as climate change forces the animals to change their migratory patterns across southern Africa, leading to more cases of human-elephant conflict.

American Tourist Killed By Elephant During Safari Drive

Two villagers were trampled to death by elephants in separate incidents recently in Zvimba District.
The attacks occurred in the Zowa area where villagers are now living in fear.
Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) spokesperson, Tinashe Farawo confirmed the incidents, saying one of the victims was a teenager. He said (via <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/two-killed-in-jumbo-attacks/">NewZimbabwe.com</a>):

We can confirm the unfortunate deaths of two people, including a teenager, killed in two separate incidents.
Our reaction team of rangers is currently on the ground to track down the elephants with a view, of course, to kill them.
The elephants escaped from Pamuzinda and we are currently seized with investigations.

People in areas around Chegutu, Zvimba West and East, as well as Makonde districts, have been warned to be on the lookout for the dangerous elephants.
If you ever find yourself face-to-face with an angry elephant, here are some essential tips to help you survive the encounter:
<ul>
<li>You need to recognise the charge type. Most elephant charges are mock charges meant to frighten rather than harm. In a mock charge, the elephant’s ears will be relaxed or fanned out and its trunk will be hanging loosely down. If it is a real charge, the elephant’s ears are pinned back flat and its trunk is curled inward.</li>
<li>It is advisable to stay calm and non-threatening as elephants can read body language. Show them you’re not a threat. However, if they keep approaching despite your calm, consider yelling.</li>
<li>Also, position yourself downwind from the elephant as this makes it harder for them to smell you.</li>
<li>If it’s a real charge, running and shouting won’t be enough, therefore, it is important to run in a zig-zag pattern to confuse the elephant and to seek cover behind large objects if possible.</li>

Elephants Kill Two People In Zvimba

Two people were arrested in Chinhoyi on Friday while trying to sell an elephant hide for US$1 500, reported <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/https-www-newzimbabwe-com-pair-busted-selling-elephant-skin-for-us1500/">NewZimbabwe.com</a>.
The suspects, Trymore Muzezewa (47) of Chief Dandawa in Hurungwe and Hopelight Gumbo (36) of Greenwood Terrace, Mzari in Chinhoyi, appeared before Chinhoyi Magistrate Rumbidzai Chuma on Saturday and were remanded in custody to Monday, 11 September for bail ruling.
Muzezewa and Gumbo are facing charges of contravening section 59(2)(b) of the Parks and Wildlife Act chapter 20:14 that pertains to unlawful hunting, possession or dealing in animals or their parts.
Prosecutor Irene Mapfumo told the Court that on 08 September 2023 at around 2 PM, detectives on deployment in Mzari suburb were informed that Muzezewa was in possession of an elephant skin, which he intended to sell.
The detectives contacted Muzezewa purporting to be prospective buyers and convinced him to sell the elephant skin to them for US$1 500.
Muzezewa allegedly brought the contraband along Greenwood Terrace. However, when detectives identified themselves, he tried to run away but the cops caught up with him and apprehended him leading to recovery of the hide.
Upon interrogation, Muzezewa allegedly implicated his female co-accused as the owner of the article.
Gumbo who was in the vicinity was tracked and arrested.
Both the accused failed to produce a permit authorising them to deal in the elephant hide.
When they appeared in court on Saturday, a Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority (ZimParks) ecologist was yet to establish the value of the recovered property.

Pair Arrested In Chinhoyi Trying To Sell Elephant Skin For US$1 500

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) has put down an elephant that was destroying crops and fruit trees in the Mkhosana and Mfelandawonye suburbs of Victoria Falls.
Over the weekend, Zimparks rangers reacted to a distress call by the community and put down the lone elephant.
A resident told ZBC News that the elephant was destroying gardens, fields, orchards and perimeter fences. Said the resident:

We are grateful to Zimparks for listening to our plight and the patrols they are making in our areas. Let them continue and increase such.
We are very happy, the elephant was a real problem and it was destroying our fruit trees, mangoes and paw paws and others.
We had resorted to putting elephant dung on our crops to scare them away.

A commentator on wildlife issues Bulisani Mathe gave an insight into circumstances that warrant an animal to be put down. Mathe said:

It is not in the best interest of conservationists to put down wild animals, but there are times when it has to happen. 
When a wild animal becomes a threat to human life and property and when it’s injured beyond recovery through human intervention such as snares, it has to be put down before it kills people or damages more property.

Cases of human-wildlife conflict have been on the rise in Zimbabwe over the past few years as animals frequent human settlements in search of food and water.
In 2022, about four people were trampled to death by elephants in Victoria Falls.

Zimparks Rangers Put Down Problem Elephant In Victoria Falls

A Kariba woman was attacked by an elephant while fetching water from an outside tap early this morning. She managed to escape.
Miss Angela Kamberembere was filling up containers with water at Number 1158, Nyamhunga 2 Township, near Nyanhewe Primary School when she suddenly saw the elephant, <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/kariba-resident-survives-elephant-attack/">The Herald</a> reported.
The elephant attempted to grab her with the trunk and she fell to the ground. Miss Kamberembere narrated:
<blockquote>
The moment the elephant charged to attack me further, its right leg got stuck in a dish.
This must have distracted it allowing me to recover before I started crawling away after gaining composure.
</blockquote>
Some residents who spoke to The Herald blamed perennial water were exposing them to danger as they are forced to fetch water from tapes between midnight and 0400 hours. Mrs Albertina Botai said:
<blockquote>
Kariba Municipality is letting residents down. Instead of sleeping, we are busy filling up containers with water, exposing us to dangers with wild animals.
We heard Angela screaming and we rushed to make noise which must have distracted the elephant. She is lucky to be alive.

Mrs Svinurai Vhareni said the elephant now frequents the area where it drinks water stored in dishes and other containers.
The residents said water problems started in 2018 when Kariba Municipality connected additional institutional water users.

Kariba Woman Survives Elephant Attack

An elephant in Kenya believed to have been Africa’s largest female tusker, has died of old age.
Named Dida, the elephant was known by many people for its long tusks and was popular with tourists.
Dida was aged between 60 and 65 years – well beyond the average life expectancy for an elephant in the wild.
Posting on Twitter attaching images of the elephant, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said:

A matriarch has rested 🐘 We are saddened by the death of Dida who was possibly Africa’s largest female Tusker and a Matriarch residing in @KWSTsavoEast National Park. She died from natural causes due to old age having lived a full life to about 60-65 years old.
Dida was truly an iconic matriarch of Tsavo and a great repository of many decades worth of knowledge.
She shepherded her herd through many seasons and challenging times. She served as both the subject of various documentaries and an iconic tourist attraction.
Those who got to know her through pictures and videos as well as those who had the exquisite pleasure of meeting her in person will remember her.

Africa’s "Largest" Female Tusked Elephant, Dies In Kenya Aged 65

A Binga man escaped death by a whisker after being attacked by a crocodile while allegedly running away from a charging elephant.
His left arm and leg were amputated following the crocodile attack. 
Winders Sianene (34) was attacked by a crocodile as he tried to run away from an elephant that was charging at him when he was on his way to Mlibizi River where he was going for a fishing expedition.
Mr Fanikiso Mkombwe, brother to Sianene confirmed the incident to <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/chased-by-elephant-caught-by-crocodile/">Sunday News</a>. Said Mr Mkombwe:

Winders was on his way to Mlibizi River when he saw an elephant charging towards him. It was then that he decided to run and jump into the river trying to evade the elephant. Unfortunately, he was attacked by a crocodile in the process. He was going to do fishing in Mlibizi River. He has since been admitted to Mpilo Hospital while his leg and arm have been amputated.

It’s not stated how he escaped from the crocodile.
Zimparks spokesperson Mr Tinashe Farawo also confirmed the incident and warned the public to stay away from water bodies and treat them cautiously.
Meanwhile, Victoria Falls-based poet, Obert Dube has donated a wheelchair to Sianene through his wheelchair donation programme.

Man Caught And Attacked By A Crocodile While Fleeing From An Elephant

Three major public hospitals in the City of Bulawayo received hundreds of kilogrammes of elephant meat leftovers from the Independence Day national celebrations held in the city on Monday last week.
Bulawayo’s referral hospitals Ingutsheni, Mpilo and United Bulawayo Hospital (UBH) each were given their share of the game meat.
NewZimbabwe.com reported sources as saying that Mpilo received 150 kgs, UBH was allocated 140 kgs while Ingutsheni hospital, which was the first to be given, received an undisclosed amount of the meat.
Ingutsheni Hospital Clinical Director Wellington Ranga confirmed receiving the elephant meat in an interview with the publication. He said:

Yes, I can confirm that we received elephant meat yesterday but I do not have details of the source of the meat and quantity but I actually saw the meat.
Administrative officers are the ones who have got all the details regarding the source of the meat because they signed for it.

Mpilo Hospital Acting Chief Executive officer Solwayo Ngwenya said he was unaware of the meat donation when he was contacted for a comment.
A nutritionist who declined to be named told NewZimbabwe.com that there is low uptake of the elephant meat at Mpilo and UBH. Said the source:

A lot of patients are complaining that they cannot be forced to eat the meat. The meat is dense and fibrous making it difficult to chew.

Uhuru Celebrations: Leftover Elephant Meat Donated To Bulawayo Hospitals

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) has advised villagers in Ward 24 of the Mutsago area of Mutare West to avoid unnecessary movements after three stray elephants were spotted in the area.
In a statement released on Thursday, ZimParks also warned the villagers against trying to scare away the animals as they can attack people if provoked. ZimParks said:

We have received a report that three elephants were seen roaming in the Mutsago area, Ward 24 of Mutare West.
Communities in the surrounding areas are being advised to remain calm, stop unnecessary movements and desist from any attempts to scare the elephants away.

Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) rangers last week found the decomposing carcasses of seven elephants at the Ngamo Forest on the outskirts of the Hwange National Park.
Zimparks spokesperson, Tinashe Farawo, told VicFallsLive on Thursday that the seven elephants, that included a bull and calves, died two months ago.
Farawo also revealed that tests carried out so far have ruled out cyanide poisoning. Said Farawo:

Our investigations are still ongoing, but the laboratory results ruled out the suspicion of them dying from cyanide poisoning but we are still exploring the possible causes of their deaths.
The seven deceased elephants were a family because there was a bull, substandard ones and calves.
Hyenas and vultures could’ve also immediately died because they fed on the corpses but patrol officers did not come across any that had died, so we suspect that they might have died from an infection that is still under investigation.
Their ivory was also still intact, so the other theory could be that they succumbed to a natural cause because when elephants age, their teeth fall off and at times their trunks could be faulty which affects their breeding patterns causing some problems which eventually leads to death.

7 Elephants Found Dead Outside Hwange National Park

A 71-year old South African tourist was on Wednesday trampled to death by an elephant “in full view” of his son at Zimbabwe´s Mana Pools National Park.
Mana Pools is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its splendid setting along the Zambezi River and surrounding flood plain teeming with elephants and other wildlife.
The victim, Michael Bernard Walsh, a veterinarian from Cape Town, was a “loyal tourist” who had been visiting Mana Pools “almost every year” for the past 35 years, according to Tinashe Farawo, spokesman for the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks).
Farawo said the father and son duo had left their car about 40 meters (44 yards) from the scene of the incident. He said:
It is with great sadness that a 71-year-old South African veterinary doctor was trampled to death by an elephant in Mana Pools in full view of his 41-year-old son.
He has been visiting the park since 1986. The duo was on a morning walk in the park.
Last week an anti-poaching coordinator with a conservation group was trampled to death by an elephant in Victoria Falls in western Zimbabwe.
Clever Kapandura, an operations coordinator for the Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit, a non-governmental organization, was part of a team of scouts deployed to investigate reports of a possible poaching incident.
An elephant bull reportedly charged from about 120 meters (130 yards) away and seized the man and killed him.
Zimbabwe’s national parks and environmental groups are reporting increasing cases of conflict between humans and wildlife in recent years.
More than 40 people have died from such conflicts in parks and other rural areas in Zimbabwe so far this year, said Farawo.

An elephant that killed the Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit (VFAPU) operations director on Friday morning was tracked and later shot dead by the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) rangers.
The stray elephant had charged at Clever Kapandura (51), attacked and trampled him to death, while he was conducting an anti-poaching patrol on Friday near Bonnaise Air bush owned by the Victoria Falls City Council.
Lovemore Ndlovu from Bonnaise Air confirmed to CITE that the elephant had been gunned down. He said:

They killed it approximately five hours later at Aerodrome suburbs.
The search was not easy as it was equally dangerous, but it was spotted by a helicopter that was dispatched to join the search and it was immediately gunned down at the same spot.

However, Zimparks spokesperson, Tinashe Farawo said he was not aware of the development but commended what rangers had done.

Victoria Falls Killer Elephant Gunned Down

A Kwekwe man was fatally trampled by an elephant while taking a selfie just outside the gold-mining town located in Midlands Province.
The man, whose name could not be ascertained, is said to have been gored and dragged for some metres before being trampled by the provoked jumbo in Ward 30 resettlement area.
The deceased man’s colleague is said to be battling for life at Kwekwe General Hospital.
The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) shot dead the killer elephant and another jumbo that was spotted heading towards the residential areas.
It was free for all for villagers in Ward 30 and Ward 2 when the elephants were put down as they were seen pushing and shoving to get a share of the meat.
ZimParks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo said the two jumbos were put down as they were now posing danger to human life. He said:

There were two incidents, one was when our rangers had to take down an elephant after it trampled upon a man and injured another.
The man is said to have been taking selfies with the jumbo when he was attacked by the animal.
… We had no option, but to put it down as it was now heading towards residential areas.

Villagers in Mbizo 22, Chicago, Umlala Park and the surrounding areas have been living in fear after about seven jumbos were spotted last week.
Farawo said they drove the elephants back to the Black Rhino Conservancy where they are said to have escaped from.
He, however, urged members of the public to avoid provoking the animals.
He said communities should also report such incidents as soon as they spot the animals.

Thirteen (13) stray elephants were spotted on Saturday morning at Ruchanyu resettlement in Shurugwi South and a local official has warned residents to stay clear of the mammoth beasts as they can get easily upset.
District Development Co-ordinator (DDC) Romeo Shangwa said they have since alerted the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) about the stray jumbos. Said Shangwa:

These thirteen elephants are at Ruchanyu and I have phoned and alerted the Department of National parks.
They said that they have no transport and we are making a plan to go and collect them.

Zimparks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo recently said they are anticipating an increase in more human-wildlife cases as the dry season approaches.
He said there is often a surge in human-wildlife conflicts during the dry season as wild animals invade settlements in search of food.

13 Stray Elephants Strike Fear In Shurugwi

A 74-year-old villager from Mabale in Hwange escaped death by the skin of his teeth after he was attacked by an adult elephant weighing 6 tonnes which fractured his right leg.
Hlanganani Dube of Simukululwe Village under Chief Dingani-Nelukoba was attacked at 2 PM while herding cattle on 5 May in a nearby bush.
He dragged himself on his buttocks for eight hours until he reached the main road where he got help at around 10 PM.
Dube said he could neither rise on his feet nor crawl because of the pain on the fractured leg and started pushing himself on his buttocks while using his arms for balance until he reached the Bulawayo-Hwange main road where he flagged down passing cars.
He said there were a number of times that he almost gave up but the thought of his family that would be left with no one to care for them kept him going.
Dube used a torch from a phone to wave down vehicles and after several tries, Hwange Safari Lodge general manager Taylor Cameron stopped and rescued him.
A professional hunter, Thabani Tshuma, said Dube was lucky to survive the elephant attack and was even luckier to still be alive after being in the forest for eight hours while bleeding. He said:
<blockquote>Wild animals can pick up the scent of blood from a long distance and instinctively close in on any being that is injured.
It is a miracle they did not attack him when he was in the bush for that long, in that state.</blockquote>
Dube is still admitted to Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo where he only underwent surgery last Thursday, over three weeks after his admission.
Hwange Rural District Council (HRDC) is taking care of his medical expenses while Mbalabala Safaris and Hwange Safari Lodge have also been assisting.

Hwange Man (74) Crawls For 8 Hours After 6-tonne Elephant Crushes His Leg

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) has gunned down a bull elephant which has been terrorising residents of Mfelandwonye Suburb in Victoria Falls.
The rogue jumbo was killed over the weekend after it had seemingly joined police officers to enforce the national lockdown, with residents in the resort town staying indoors, fearful of the animal.
Zimparks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo said the elephant was killed after it started to barge into people’s homes and destroying their property. Said Farawo:
<blockquote>Our officers in Victoria Falls had to put down the problem animal. Over the last month, our rangers were deployed to scare the animal without success and we took the decision to eliminate the animal in order to protect the residents.</blockquote>
Following the killing of the animal, residents of Mfelandawonye Suburb flocked to the carcass to get free game meat.
Their only request was that the government assist them with mealie meal and cooking oil to go along with the free delicacy.

Zimparks Kill Elephant For Terrorizing Vic Falls Residents

The Zambezi Elephant Fund (ZEF) has bemoaned the decline in the number of elephants in Zimbabwe.
ZEF released a statement last week to mark World Wildlife Day. The Fund was established in 2015 and it seeks to address poaching in the Zambezi Valley. Part of the report reads as follows:
<blockquote>Zimbabwe is home to the world’s second largest population of African Elephant, and yet overall Zimbabwe’s elephant population has declined by 10 per cent since the 2011 Great Elephant Census.
In the Zambezi Valley, African Elephants, amongst other species are under serious threat from poaching and over the past 13 years, 60 per cent of the elephants in the Zambezi Valley have been lost

10 Per Cent Of Zambezi Valley Jumbos Lost Since 2011 - ZEF

A man was on Sunday trampled to death by an elephant in Marange while taking pictures of the jumbo.
The incident was confirmed by Manicaland police spokesperson Tavhiringwa Kakokwa on Monday.
ZimParks spokesperson, Tinashe Farawo said that they had sent a team to investigate the incident. He said:
<blockquote>It’s very unfortunate that a life has been lost, we have dispatched our team there [Marange] so that we can find out what really happened. The incident happened yesterday (Sunday) in the morning.
We are suspecting that the elephants came from Chiredzi where there is a park.</blockquote>

Marange Man Trampled To Death By Elephant While Taking Pictures

A German tourist was on Saturday trampled and left for dead by a bull elephant near the Victoria Falls hotel. He has since been admitted to a local hospital where he is reported to be in critical condition. Another German Tourist Trampled By An Elephant

A German tourist has been trampled to death by an elephant as she tried to photograph the animal in Zimbabwe.
Authorities in Zimbabwe say the attack occurred on Wednesday in Mana Pools National Park and the tourist succumbed to her injuries later the same day.
The woman was in a group of tourists who encountered a herd of elephants upon entering the park. According to the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority spokesman Tinashe Farawo, the authorities are yet to establish what irritated the animals and led to the attack.

German Tourist Trampled To Death By Elephant

A 29-YEAR-OLD woman was trampled to death by an elephant along the Zambezi River near Kariba while walking from a nightclub with her boyfriend.
The identity of the deceased is being withheld as her next of kin has not been advised.
Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) Public Relations Manager Mr Tinashe Farawo confirmed the incident which occurred last Friday at about 3 AM.
He said the woman was walking with her partner from a local nightclub at around 3AM when they encountered the wild animal.
The man managed to escape but the woman was attacked. Sources said she called out to her partner for help but he continued running away.
He said a search team had been dispatched to hunt down the jumbo.
Said Farawo:
<blockquote>We are currently looking for the problem animal with a view to putting it down.</blockquote>

Elephant Kills 29 Year Old Woman

Former Minister of State for Manicaland Province Mandi Chimene is reported to have fled to Burundi fearing arrest for crimes committed under her tenure in President Robert Mugabe’s government According to a source who spoke to the weekly newspaper, The Standard, Chimene has since made her way to Burundi after leaving Mocambique. Chimene was an avowed critic of President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
She is wanted on charges of criminal abuse of office after she allegedly commandeered elephant meat for her own consumption from Cecil Kop Nature Reserve in Mutare. The meat was valued at $1 800. Michael Peter Hitschmann, the member in charge of Cecil Kop Nature Reserve filed two criminal abuse of office charges against Chimene last week.
Part of his statement reads:
<blockquote>On July 24, 2017, two adult elephants were shot dead at Cecil Kop following a fatal attack on Support Unit Constable Dambe on July 18, 2017. The carcasses of these elephants were then being processed to remove the meat for sale with all proceeds to go to Cecil Kop Nature Reserve as these elephants were their property.
I was advised by Dominic Mubvanyika [Parks and Wildlife Management Authority officer-in-charge] that Mandiitawepi Chimene was demanding a full truckload of elephant meat at no charge for her personal use and that she had instructed him to collect it immediately from Cecil Kop and deliver it to her. He did so at around 4:30 pm on the same day, July 24.</blockquote>
The second charge comes after Chimene threated to distribute the land at the nature reserve to Zanu-PF youth supporters. Chimene claimed that the land in question was being wasted and that it should be divided into residential stands for youths.

Former Minister Reportedly Now In Hiding In Burundi, Wanted For Theft Of Elephant Meat

Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) spokesperson, Tinashe Farawo confirmed that Kariba professional hunter James Mackenzie died on Sunday after his car, a Honda Fit, was crashed by a charging elephant near Nyamhunga High School on Sunday evening.
Said Farawo:
<blockquote>I can confirm that a road accident with elephant occurred in Kariba and the driver died on the spot. Unfortunately, the late driver is a professional hunter. We do not celebrate the death of any human being and officials had to shoot the injured elephant. It is an accident that was reported to the police. We call upon communities to keep a distance from animals as no one can predict the behaviour of these animals no matter how much we domesticate them.</blockquote>

Elephant crushes hunter to death

Two semi-tame elephants which lived in the Cecil Kop Nature Reserve near Mutare were shot dead after they trampled a police constable, Prince Dambe, to death. A statement by Wildlife and Environment Zimbabwe (WEZ) which runs Cecil Kop said the two elephants escaped from the campsite through part of the electric fence which had been damaged by cross border smugglers.
Constable Dambe initially fled from the elephants but later on, when he was making his way back to the campsite he ran straight into the two elephants, which then attacked him and trampled him to death.
Part of the statement reads:
<blockquote>Unfortunately he ran straight into the two elephants coming in the opposite direction. The signs at the scene indicated that both elephants participated in attacking and killing Constable Dambe</blockquote>
Mike Hitschmann, the member in charge of Cecil Kop said:
<blockquote>The death of this police officer could have been avoided.
They could very easily have chased the elephants away simply by firing warning shots.</blockquote>
