Businessman James Makamba, who returned home last year after 12 years in self-imposed exile is reported to be planning a smear campaign against ICT Minister Supa Mandiwanzira. Makamba is trying to gain control of Telecel Zimbabwe and is reported to be seeing the minister as a stumbling block. The businessman was recently involved in a <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/03/29/mnangagwas-son-in-law-james-makamba-fight-for-control-of-telecel/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">fight for control of the Empowerment Corporation with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s son-in-law Gerald Mlotshwa</a>. The Empowerment Corporation owns 40 percent of Telecel Zimbabwe, with the government owning the rest. According to State media, there is an audio recording in which Makamba says:

These guys need an expose but in a smart way, ok? Because there is the General (Chiwenga) on the other side nepfuti dzake and his wife.</blockquote>
Makamba’s associate goes on to say,
<blockquote>Nyoka inorohwa musoro wayo and musoro wenyoka iyi ndiSupa (Target a snake’s head to kill it, and the head of this snake is Supa).</blockquote>

Makamba Accused Of Plotting Smear Campaign Against Supa, Chiwenga Over Telecel

Government efforts to completely take over <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Telecel_Zimbabwe">Telecel Zimbabwe</a> through Zarnet have hit a snag after it emerged that the Empowerment Corporation has signed an agreement to sell 15 percent of its 40 percent stake to Brainworks Capital Management.
According to information gathered by The Herald, Empowerment Corporation intended to sell its shares in Telecel Zimbabwe to settle its debt with ABSA Bank Limited of South Africa. Documents in The Herald’s possession show that a Memorandum of Agreement in this regard was signed on October 13, 2016.
This comes at a time when Government is close to completing the Telecel takeover transaction that has been pending for a while due to a shortage of foreign currency to pay the total price of US$40 million agreed for Vimpelcom’s 60 percent stake in Telecel Zimbabwe. However, ICT Minister <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Supa_Mandiwanzira">Supa Mandiwanzira</a> insists that Government is going to own 100% of Telecel despite Empowerment Corporation’s transaction.
