The Environmental Management Agency (Ema) has reported that three people were killed and property worth US$187  167 was destroyed nationwide by veld fires since July 31.
In a statement, EMA Education and Publicity Manager Mrs Amkela Sidange said 1 517 fire incidences that destroyed 408  366.7 hectares of land have been recorded.
She said this translates to an 84.97 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2020 when 220 778 hectares were burnt from 395 veld fire incidences that were recorded.
Mrs Sidange said the majority of veld fires were recorded in resettlement areas. he said:

The veld fires have destroyed agricultural produce, equipment, household property and plantations worth US$187 167. The majority of the veld fires have been recorded in the resettlements 61.82 per cent, communal lands 7.13 per cent, forest 7.97 per cent, safari 7.88 per cent, small scale farms 7.05 per cent, model A and D 5.56 per cent, National Parks 1.94 per cent, urban area 0.26 per cent, recreational parks 0.12 per cent and other land 0.26 per cent…
Notably the causes of the veld fires so far have been identified to be anthropogenic in nature specifically due to land clearing (28.92 percent), arson (27.72 percent), illegal mining (27.72 percent), poor ash disposal (12.05 percent) and hunting (3.61 percent). To that end people remain their own worst enemy in veld fire management in the country as almost all veld fires recorded so far are due to human activities.
</blockquote>
She also observed that one person died due to veld fires last year. 
Mrs Sidange encouraged farmers to desist from clearing fireguards using fires now as it is windy, dry and hot.
She added that EMA has as of September 5 issued 732 tickets, 5 027 veld fire environmental protection orders and opened 43 dockets. 
Mashonaland West, Manicaland and Mashonaland East were the most affected provinces.

EMA: Veld Fires Have Killed 3 People, Destroyed Properties Worth US$187 000

The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has revealed that it has been granted permission by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to monitor and prevent air pollution using nuclear energy.
This was revealed by Mr Alpha Chikurira, EMA’s Environmental Quality Manager who told ZBC News that EMA was mandated to use natural resources to prevent air pollution. He said:
<blockquote>EMA is tasked in terms of the environmental management act to ensure the sustainable use of natural resources in the prevention of air pollution, we have received support from the international atomic energy agency IAEA to conduct air pollution monitoring using Nuclear energy.</blockquote>
He added that EMA started last week to train personnel from the city council and other government departments who will be using the monitoring equipment.
The development comes as the World Health Organisation (WHO) has revealed that a considerable number of people are dying yearly and prematurely due to air pollution.

EMA Gets The Nod To Conduct Air Pollution Monitoring Using Nuclear Energy

The Environmental Management Agency (Ema) has revised a number of its licensing regulations to enable small-scale and artisanal miners to get into business easily. Addressing a press conference in Bulawayo recently Ema board chairperson Ambassador Zenzo Nsimbi said,

Ema has had a look at the impact of charges that are incurred by small-scale miners to start. In line with the ease of doing business Ema has revised the regulations that affect the small-scale miners…We have come up with a package where we say a small-scale miner can buy that package. Once they have got that package at an affordable fee, we then monitor them according to how they adhere to that package. That package will avoid them going to expensive consultancy in order to get their EIAs.</blockquote>

EMA Revises Regulations To Help Small Scale Miners

In an interview, Environment Management Agency (EMA) education and publicity officer Mr Steady Kangata told The Herald that the agency is backtracking on a 3 month reprieve following failure by users to stick to the agreement. He said as a result they will be confiscating kaylites with immediate effect.
Said Dr Kangata:
<blockquote>They were supposed to come up with a plan aimed at finding out ways of picking up kaylites through community based organisations so that the kaylites would not be menace to the environment. So, we have been monitoring for compliance since this agreement was reached, but they have failed to ensure a kaylite free environment, hence the move by EMA to implement the ban. Teams are busy monitoring all supermarkets, restaurants and fast foods and should we found any kaylites, we are confiscating in situ. This means we are not taking the confiscated kaylites with us, but we count them together with the users and leave them but we expect to see them in the same numbers on our next monitoring visit. If we find them short, it means they have been used meaning the user in question is liable to a prescribed fine.</blockquote>

EMA backtracks on 3 month reprieve, to confiscate kaylites with immediate effect

In the latest quarterly report on the quality of water in the province, Environmental Management Agency (EMA) provincial manager Mr Robson Mavondo said that Masvingo’s water is not safe for drinking as it comprises of sewage effluent.
The worst affected source is Shakashe River near Masvingo Teachers’ College where lower dissolved oxygen fluctuating around 45% saturation against a minimum requirement of at least 60% has been discovered. This shows that there is discharge of sewage effluent into the water source.

Speaking to ZBC after a closed door meeting, Environmental Management Agency (EMA) chairperson  Ambassador Zenzo Nsimbi said they signed agreements with companies. The agreements state compel companies to exhaust the kaylites they have in the next three months though individual consumers will have the final decision on whether they want their food in a kaylite or not.
Government last week announced that it has activated statutory instrument 84 of 2012 which prohibits the manufacturing or importation of polystyrene or kaylites citing environmental and health hazards. The ban followed a recent research by the University of Zimbabwe which showed that kaylites are made out of a chemical called styrene which has been attributed to causing dangerous cancers.

Govt reverses immediate ban on kaylites, gives companies three months, individuals to have final say

In a statement the Environmental Management Agency (EMA), through their board chairperson Ambassador Zenzo Nsimbi banned the use of kaylites citing environmental and health reasons.
Part of the statement reads:
<blockquote>The Environmental Management Agency has with immediate effect activated Statutory Instrument 84 of 2012 (Plastic Packaging and Plastic Bottles) (Amendment) Regulations, 2012 (No 1.), which prohibits the manufacture or importation of expanded polystyrene (kaylite) for use or commercial distribution within Zimbabwe. The ban has been effected after wide consultation in order to protect the citizens of Zimbabwe from the environmental and health impacts caused by expanded polystyrene (kaylite).</blockquote>

Govt bans use of kaylites with immediate effect, health & environmental reasons cited

Environment Management Agency (EMA) Education and Publicity manager Mr Steady Kangata said houses built on wetlands in Masvingo must be demolished as their construction violated the Environmental Management Act. He said anyone who intends to put up a structure on a wetland must first seek approval from EMA as failure to do so attracts a fine and the structure must be demolished.
Kangata told The Chronicle that all stuctures built on wetlands face demolition:
<blockquote>All wetlands are protected by the law and no one should interfere with their existence. What we do as EMA is to fine the developer heavily and the local authority will seek a demolition order to have the buildings destroyed. While Masvingo could have the same problems and house owners are experiencing flash floods, Harare and Chitungwiza are the worst affected.</blockquote>
Masvingo Mayor Hubert Fidze said all houses built on wetlands will be demolished by council. Some houses in Rujeko High Density and Mucheke’s ZBS suburbs were built on wetlands, raising the risk of flooding as well as disturbing the ecosystem.
