The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Environmental_Management_Agency_(EMA)">Environmental Management Agency (EMA)</a> has shutdown two lithium mines in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Goromonzi">Goromonzi</a> district in Mashonaland East province for allegedly operating without environmental impact assessment (EIA) certificates.
The companies are TN Gold and Shengxiang Mining Investments, according to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200008097/ema-shuts-down-2-lithium-mines">NewsDay</a>.
TN Gold was fined ZW$500 000, while Shengxiang Mining was ordered to pay ZW$100 000 for lack of EIAs.
EMA provincial spokesperson, Astas Mabwe, yesterday confirmed that the two lithium mines had been shutdown. Mabwe said:

After a public outcry on lithium and illegal mining activities in Goromonzi district, Ema carried out inspections in hotspot areas reported. Through the inspections, it was found out that a lot of individuals and companies had started lithium mining without the requisite licences. Two companies were issued with tickets and orders to stop illegal lithium mining and processing.
The companies have since stopped operations and are in the process of applying for EIA certification from the agency. Other illegal lithium mining activities were being done by artisanal miners who run away when they see law enforcement officers. As Ema, we continue to monitor the situation and encourage prospective miners to have the necessary papers before engaging in mining activities.

Since December of 2022, Goromonzi district has experienced a rise in the number of artisanal miners looking for lithium ore.
This has resulted in environmental degradation as massive deforestation has given rise to deep gullies in areas the mineral is being extracted.

EMA Has Shutdown Two Lithium Mines

A <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Somabhula">Somabhula</a> farmer has said he is stressed after his three brand new tractors and other equipment bought in February this year were destroyed by veld fire on Wednesday last week.
John Makhaya Masuku (37) said the three tractors landed at a combined cost of US$57 000 and a baler at US$9 000.
Already the equipment had done 14 000 hay bales valued at US$21 000, which he was selling at US$1.50 each. Masuku spoke to the Chronicle about his loss:

Kunzima ndoda ukulandisa sile stress esinzima hey indaba yakhona inde kakhulu (It’s difficult to narrate what happened. I’m stressed. It’s a long story).
I bought these three tractors for US$57 000. The two huge 75 HP came at a cost of US$45 000 and the small one for US$12 000. There was also a baler at US$9 000. So, the cost of the new equipment was US$66 000. Already the equipment had done 14 000 hay bales which I was selling at US$1,50 each.
We were making hay bales in preparation for the farming season. The major customers for these are dairy farmers. Then it so happened that our farm workers got paid at the end of the month and they left the project site unattended, parked the tractors side by side with the hay bales, a huge pile stock of about 14 000 bales, covered with a canvas tent.

He said a fire broke out and there was no one to control it as the employees were all away “enjoying their salaries.”
Masuku appealed for assistance from farmers around the Somabhula area in terms of tilling the land so that he prepares the land for the coming cropping season.
He also appealed to the government to help him replace the farm equipment.
Environmental Management Agency (EMA) Midlands provincial spokesperson Mr Oswald Ndlovu said from July 31, Midlands province has lost about 8 500 hectares to veld fires.
In 2021, veld fires destroyed 408 366 hectares of land up from 778 hectares the previous year.
<h2>Veld fire is triggered by people who:</h2>
i).throw away burning cigarette stubs, 
ii). burn vegetation to prepare land for ploughing, 
iii). use fires to hunt or smoke out bees. 
iv). make fires to warm themselves while waiting for buses and also leave without putting out the fire.

Veld Fire Destroys 3 Brand New Tractors, Other Farm Equipment At A Somabhula Farm

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Environmental_Management_Agency_(EMA)">Environmental Management Agency (EMA)</a> has warned of a ‘hazardous substance spillage’ at Hilltop, Moi area, Hurungwe, Mashonaland West along the Harare – <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Chirundu">Chirundu</a> Highway on Friday.
The agency said the fuel was looted by communities and artisanal miners surrounding the area. In a notice, EMA said:
<blockquote>
The spillage involved a Gilbro haulage truck carrying 42 000 litres of petrol resulting in the discharge of approximately 40 000 litres into the environment. Fortunately, there was no fire incident. However, an area of about 250m2 was affected.
This was extremely dangerous.
The EMA is working closely with the Transporter (Gilbro) to rehabilitate the area. Section 73 of the Environmental Management Act (Cap 20:27) prohibits the discharge of hazardous substances into the environment and places the responsibility of rehabilitating and restoring the affected area on the polluter.
The company has since engaged a private company to do the clean-up which is already underway.

Most of the previously reported spillages of hazardous substances recorded during transportation have been linked to travelling outside regulated time frames and the use of improper packaging and containers.
EMA says most of the offenders have been found to be illegally transporting these substances without a license from the agency during odd hours.
Extreme urges extreme caution in the storage of hazardous substances as there has been a loss of lives in some incidents where there was spillage.

EMA Speaks On Spillage Of 42k Litres Of Petrol Along Harare - Chirundu Highway

The government has said the use of plastic carrier bags will be banned by December 2022, with retail outlets urged to find environment-friendly alternatives.
The ban is meant to protect the environment from plastic bag pollution as they are not recyclable.
Environmental Management Agency (EMA)’s director for environmental management, Steady Kangata, said the use of plastic carrier bags would be phased out by December next year. 
In a letter to one P Rambanepasi of Retailers Association of Zimbabwe, dated November 12, Kangata said:
<blockquote>
 Globally, plastic waste has become a menace, hence the need to reduce the use of plastics. Ema is, therefore, taking steps towards the phase out of plastic carrier bags. We are encouraging your affiliate members to consider alternative non-plastic carrier bags which are environmentally friendly.
Plastic carrier bags are set to be phased out by the end of December 2022. We appreciate efforts by some of your members who have already started promoting (the use) of alternative bags. A green economy is the way to go and your co-operation in this regard is greatly appreciated.

A number of countries have already banned plastic bags for the safety of the environment.
A few years ago, Zimbabwe banned the use of kaylites after they had turned out to be the leading pollutants of the environment.
Nevertheless, backyard restaurants are still using kaylites to package food.
EMA claimed that the use of plastic food containers exposed people to cancer and plastic blocks the country’s drainage and sewer systems, especially during the rainy season.
Meanwhile, plastic production in the world is forecast to double by 2040 and may account for 20% of the world’s oil production by 2050.

Government Moves To Ban Plastic Carrier Bags

Hwange villagers want Chinese investors in the area stopped from exploring for coal saying they were violating environmental laws.
They also argue that the investors failed to produce any documentation which suggests that they have permission to operate in the area.
Hwange villagers also claim that the Chinese investors engaged the local leadership for the purposes of coercing them into accepting the foreign nationals operating as Beifer Investments.
Villagers are afraid that, should the project continue, they will be forced to relocate while others will be exposed to air and water pollution of Nyantuwe River which provides drinking water for humans and livestock.
They also fear that they will lose their livelihoods, grazing land for their livestock, and cultural heritage sites such as graveyards for the Nekatambe chieftainship as well as contamination of ritual sites.
According to the Dinde Residents Association, from February 2019 to December 2019, a team of Chinese investors toured the village without consulting or engaging locals. The Dinde Residents Association said:
<blockquote>In December 2019, the same team brought some lightweight machinery and set up a camp behind one Emelia Mukombwe’s homestead within the village where they intended to start drilling.
Locals approached the Chinese, who failed to produce documents authorising them to explore in the area.</blockquote>
The locals ordered them to leave and return with documents granting them permission to work in Dinde.
The Chinese investors allegedly returned to Dinde with several officers from the Environmental Management Agency, Hwange Rural District Council, traditional leaders, Zimbabwe Republic Police, Zimbabwe National Army and a local miner, to coerce the villagers.
On 8 January 2020, a delegation of local community members was dispatched to Hwange Rural District office to establish the legality of the Chinese operation.
Hwange RDC chief executive Mr Phindile Ncube told them the Chinese had a special grant for exploration.
The Centre for Natural Resources Governance (CNRG) said the local Dinde community had a right to live in their ancestral land and reserve the right to say reject forced evictions. Added CNNRG:
<blockquote>The Chinese investor has violated the country’s environmental laws, specifically, section 97 which spells that an environmental impact assessment must be carried out before prospecting.
The fact that the community of Dinde was not aware that they fall within a special exploration grant concession is testimony that they were never engaged.</blockquote>
Dinde is home to thousands of Nambyas and Tongas tribes.

Hwange Villagers In Deadlock With Chinese Investors

The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has dragged Norton Town Council to the High Court for releasing raw sewage into Manyame Dam which provides potable water to Harare and surrounding towns.
The local government authority has reportedly been discharging raw sewer into the water body since 2010 when its water and sewer treatment plants became partly functional.
Fines have not deterred the council from discharging sewer and now EMA wants a court order which directs Norton to rehabilitate, repair and upgrade its water treatment plants and sewer systems to ensure proper treatment of effluent before discharging it into the environment and water bodies.
EMA also wants Norton Town Council to ensure the licensing of any discharge of the effluent in terms of EMA Act. Through director for Environmental Protection Unit Christopher Mushava, the agency last Friday filed the application at the High Court which reads in part:
<blockquote>I firmly believe this is a proper case in which the relief sought ought to be granted. The harm caused by the actions and inactions of Norton Town Council has created a serious health risk which may result in devastating epidemics.</blockquote>

EMA Drags Local Council To Court Over Discharge Of Raw Sewage Into Manyame Dam

The Meteorological Services Department of Zimbabwe has warned members of the public of impending violent storms amidst reports that at least 19 people have since been killed by lightning and hailstorms.
Violent storms which hit several parts of the country last week left a trail of destruction with some infrastructure left in an uninhabitable state.
This was confirmed by the Deputy Director at the Civil Protection Unit (CPU), Sibusisiwe Ndlovu who told the Daily News on Monday that in addition to 19 people killed so far, 41 others had been seriously injured, while at least 543 homesteads had been damaged.
Ndlovu also revealed that six health institutions, 59 schools and four government buildings had been damaged by storms throughout the country.
The Met department expects heavy rain especially in Manicaland, Matabeleland South, Masvingo and the southern parts of the Midlands.
