Former Highlanders and Ngezi Platinum Stars coach <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Erol_Akbay" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Erol Akbay</a> feels he is the right person to take over the Warriors job.
Speaking from his base in the Netherlands last week, Akbay told Sunday Mail Sport that he is ready to take the Warriors to the World Cup. He said:
<blockquote>Zimbabwe has good players playing in Africa and Europe. That’s why I think the country is now ripe to qualify for the World Cup.
I think I am the right man for the job right now because I know Zimbabwean players and I know what Zimbabwean people want.</blockquote>
Several foreign coaches have shown interest in coaching the Warriors after the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Football_Association_(ZIFA)" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA)</a> advertised the job vacancy towards the end of 2019.
Besides Akbay, former <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Highlanders_Football_Club" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Highlanders</a> coach Hendrikus Pieter de Jongh, Spanish coach Manuel “Manolo” Marquez Roca, Hans Michael Weiss of Germany, Kosta Papic of Serbia and Zdravko Logarusic of Croatia have also applied for the job.

Erol Akbay Ready To Take Warriors To World Cup

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Ngezi_Platinum" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Ngezi Platinum Stars F.C.</a> on Thursday announced the appointment of Rodwell Dhlakama as the new coach following the sacking of Erol Akbay.
In a statement on Thursday morning, club chief executive officer, Nyasha Kadenge revealed that Dhlakama has been appointed on a caretaker basis. Said Kadenge:
<blockquote>Ngezi Platinum Stars FC wishes to announce the appointment of Rodwell Dhlakama as a caretaker coach with immediate effect.
Rodwell replaces <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Erol_Akbay" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Erol Akbay</a> who left the club last week. Rodwell joins Ngezi Platinum Stars F.C on an interim basis.

Ngezi Platinum Names New Coach To Replace Erol Akbay

Ngezi Platinum Stars on Saturday beat Black Rhinos 2-0 in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match played at Baobab Stadium.
Both goals were scored in the second half by Bruno Mtigo and Donald Teguru bringing to an end the army side’s eight-match unbeaten run.
Speaking to the media after the match, Ngezi coach Erol Akbay said that he was happy with the result. He also revealed that the club is hunting for players to boost the strikeforce.
<blockquote>I am happy with the result today although I feel we could have won the match with a bigger margin had we converted the chances that came our way.
… We are still searching and mid-season is difficult to get players because of the contracts they have with their respective clubs.</blockquote>

Erol Akbay Happy With Victory Over Black Rhinos

Ngezi Platinum Stars coach Erol Akbay bemoaned his side’s failure to score in the 1-1 stalemate against Highlanders.
Ngezi was held to a draw by Bosso in a Castle Lager Premiership match played at the Baobab Stadium on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Akbay said:
<blockquote>We had so many chances but lost two points.
The problem is that we play good football but do not score. This has been our problem since the beginning of the season.</blockquote>
Newly-appointed Highlanders coach, Mandla Mpofu was happy with the point considering that Bosso was reduced to 10 men in the 8th minutes after the dismissal of Andrew Mbeba. Mpofu said:
<blockquote>This is a precious point considering that we played with nine men (in-field players) for more than 80 minutes, it was an unbelievable performance from the boys.
As my first game in charge, I would have loved to get maximum points but again, this was a precious point for us.</blockquote>
Mpofu was leading Tshilamoya for the first time following the departure of Madinda Ndlovu for the more financially lucrative Botswana Premier League.

Bosso Coach Hails "Unbelievable Performance" In 1-1 Draw Against Ngezi Platinum Stars

Ngezi Platinum Stars coach Erol Akbay was satisfied with a point in the 0-0 draw against FC Platinum at Baobab Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Speaking to the media after the match, the Dutch tactician claimed that if his charges manage to replicate such performances, the club will be fighting for the title. Said Akbay:
<blockquote>We should have won the match in the first half but again we failed to convert some chances.
I think this was a fair result, we had our chances and we failed to convert. They had their chances, they failed to convert but with this performance, I think we will be back where we belong, that is at the top.</blockquote>
Meanwhile FC Platinum coach, Norman Mapeza blamed fatigue for his side’s failure to win the match. He said:
<blockquote>It’s been two years of non-stop football and I will say well done to the boys they did well.
We still want to win the league and we cannot talk about a four-point gap now, maybe when we are left with three games.</blockquote>
Ngezi Platinum dominated the first 15 minutes of the match with Donald Teguru and Michael Charamba failing to convert clear-cut chances.
As the game wore on, FC Platinum found some rhythm and the match became a balanced affair.
However, Devon Chafa failed to convert twice for the champions in the 35th and 37th minutes after he found some space in front of the Ngezi goal.

Erol Akbay Happy With Point Gained In Platinum Miners' 0-0 Draw

Ngezi Platinum FC coach Erol Akbay has refused to throw in the towel just yet in the race for the championship.
Akbay’s Ngezi is trailing league leaders Caps United by ten points while FC Platinum and Chicken Inn are also way ahead.
The Dutchman’s woes were compounded by the sacking of two key players — Liberty Chakoroma and Simba Nhivi — for leading a strike over salaries.
Speaking to the media ahead of this weekend’s clash with Bulawayo Chiefs, Akbay said:
<blockquote>The game against Bulawayo Chiefs is very important for us to fight to be among the teams that are competing at the top. I am not a coach who easily gives up.
We have a good squad and I believe we can surprise everybody. We will definitely bounce back.
We have been playing good football of late although we were creating chances, but not scoring at the beginning of the season.</blockquote>
He, however, conceded that Chiefs will not be a pushover as they stunned Dynamos 2-0 recently and have improved generally in the past few games.

Erol Akbay Refuses To Give Up Fight For PSL Title

New Ngezi Platinum Stars coach Erol Akbay revealed that the club set him a target to win the League this coming season. Said Akbay:
<blockquote>I have to be the champion; (it’s) very simple in my contract, there is no secret. The club is very ambitious and it’s the same with me.
They told me they want to be champions and I said okay, we will go for the championship.
If you start with this kind of a team and you know they want something from you if you don’t like it don’t go there and that’s why I accepted when they said we want to be champions and I said I will try to do my best.
We have good players and what we need to do is to make sure they play good football. Of course, some players left and others remained but the new players and those remaining have to make sure they play football the way I want.</blockquote>
The Dutchman succeeded the sacked former Dynamos player Tonderai Ndiraya ahead of the 2019 season. He will be assisted by his former assistant at Highlanders Cosmas “Tsano” Zulu and former Chapungu and Shabanie Mine coach Tendai Chikuni.

Ngezi Platinum Stars Demand That Erol Akbay Deliver Title In The 2019 Season

Highlanders  coach Erol Akbay yesterday accused the team’s executive of lying to him after his fourth consecutive defeat yesterday to Chapungu where the team lost 1-0. He said that the team’s executive lied that they had money to buy quality players.
Said Abkay:
<blockquote>In December when I was going home (Netherlands), I asked the executive if there was money to buy players and they said yes, don’t worry there is money enough for you. I called them when I was home and they again said money was enough for me to get good players, but in January when I came back, they told me there was no more money to buy players. We are missing good strikers. I gave them a lot of names that I wanted, but I was told there was no money. This executive does not want good strikers in our team because they did nothing about the players which I wanted. Highlanders have a crisis, not me. I know what I am doing and my heart is very clean. I know where the problem is and it’s the strike force.</blockquote>
However, Highlanders acting chairman Modern Ngwenya replied, saying it was not true that they promised Akbay money to buy players.

Akbay accuses Highlanders executives of lying to him after he loses 4th match

Addressing journalists at a press conference yesterday, Highlanders coach Erol Akbay announced that he will be stepping down as the club’s coach when his contract expires at the end of this season.
Said Akbay:
<blockquote>I have told the executive that I will stop at the end of this year from coaching Highlanders. I don’t know what I am going to do at the end of this year, but I will see. There are a lot of reasons, but of course the biggest reason is the financial situation for me and that is why it’s not possible anymore to continue working for Highlanders. Even if the financial situation improves I have made up my mind; my contract ends at the end of this year and I am not renewing it.</blockquote>
The club’s chief executive officer Nhlanhla Dube said that Akbay’s announcement was news to him and the rest of the club executive members were not aware of this development. However, Akbay said he was still committed to Highlanders and was looking forward to winning this season.

Highlanders coach Erol Akbay has criticised referees after fans caused their match against FC Platinum to be abandoned.
Said Akbay:
<blockquote>We are playing good football. I am giving my all but the referees are not recognising my efforts, the call by the referee was shocking. We cannot continue to have such officiating, ZIFA must do something because this is bulls**t.</blockquote>
Highlanders were leading until the last minute when FC Platinum were handed a penalty after Ralph Matema brought down Charles Sibanda. Bosso felt the foul had happened just outside the box and missiles rained down when Petros Mhari converted the penalty. Police fired teargas to try and control the crowd leading to violence with players, journalists and fans all not spared by the teargas as the game was abandoned.

Highlanders coach criticises referees after fans cause another match to be abandoned

Highlanders have dismissed reports that head coach, Erol Akbay had engaged in a strike owing to unpaid sign on fees.
The Dutch coach missed his side’s two days of training and Highlanders Secretary General, Emmert Ndlovu said contrary to reports that he was on strike, Akbay was unwell. In his absence, players went through their paces under the care of assistant coaches, Amin Soma Phiri and Cosmas Tsano Zulu. However Akbay, said that there had been a financial misunderstanding with the club which he said has since been resolved  but dismissed talk of the reported strike action.

Highlanders dismiss reports that their coach Erol Akbay  is on strike

Former Caps United, Kiglon and Motor Action winger Yves Ebabali (27) has been training with Highlanders for the past two weeks and seems to have impressed coach Erol Akbay.
Speaking to The Chrocnicle, Akbay said he will decide on the Democratic Republic of Congo winger this week. Said Akbay:
<blockquote>Yves has been training with us for a while and he is more of a winger than a striker. He is doing good and is a fast guy. I like his way of playing, but before saying we will sign him or not, I have to talk to the executive and find out if it’s possible to bring him in seeing that we already have maximised our squad. A decision has to be made this week so that if he is joining us he gets registered before the transfer window closes.</blockquote>
If Ebabali, who played for Caps United in 2009 and 2010, Kiglon in 2011 and former PSL champions Motor Action in 2012 and 2013, gets a Highlanders’ deal, he will become the club’s fourth pre-season signing after signing three strikers, Rodrick Mutuma, Manuel Esono Obiang Buale and Tambwe Kalunga.

Another Congolese attacker impresses Highlanders coach

Highlanders’ Treasurer, Donald Ndebele confirmed that the club’s first team, Division One side and juniors’ technical staff are yet to receive their salaries while head coach Erol Abkay was paid. Also affected are the club’s administrative staff.
This development comes at a time when Highlanders have a debt of over $800 000 which is likely to increase following the reduction of their sponsorship deal by Banc ABC by half to $200 000. Highlanders plan to pay outstanding salaries when the season starts and they start collecting gate takings.
However the club might not be able to use gate takings to pay outstanding salaries as they usually use the money to pay winning bonuses. Speaking to The Chronicle, Ndebele said they need to come up with a fundraising strategy such as the donate a $1 campaign. Ndebele said that they approached three companies are waiting for their responses.

Highlanders pay Abkay while rest of technical team waits for two months salary

Highlanders have signed former Dynamos forward Roderick Mutuma who has been training with the club for the last couple of weeks.
The former Dynamos striker joins as a free agent on a one year deal. Mutuma impressed head coach Erol Akbay who believes he will add value to their squad after they missed out on Gift Mbweti who opted to join FC Platinum from Hwange.

In the last four years Triangle have not had a head coach who lasts two seasons. Although coaches like Jairos Tapera, Rahman Gumbo and Masimba Dinyero are understood to have applied for the job, club sources told The Chronicle yesterday that the club management is more interested in Akbay, who impressed on his debut season in the domestic Premiership by finishing third behind champions <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/CAPS_United_Football_Club">Caps United</a> and runners-up FC Platinum.
Akbay who is in the Netherlands on holiday confirmed that the club had contacted him and said that he will remain at Highlanders since Hwange is offering him the same offer as his current club. Akbay’s contract with Highlanders runs until 2017 and the coach is hoping that BancABC will continue sponsoring Highlanders.
