More than 229 people were killed in southern Ethiopia following two landslides on Sunday evening and Monday morning, after heavy rains in a remote mountainous area of the Gofa zone.
Dagmawi Ayele, a local administrator told <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c728l7ng2q0o">BBC</a> that young children and pregnant women were among the victims, with ten people being rescued alive.
The dead also include many individuals who attempted to rescue survivors.
Dagmawi said heavy rains caused a landslide on Sunday, and as police officers, teachers and residents from nearby villages frantically continued with search-and-rescue operations on Monday, a second landslide occurred, burying them too under the mud.
Gofa is part of the state known as Southern Ethiopia, located around 320km (199 miles) southwest of the capital, Addis Ababa.
According to the UN’s Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Southern Ethiopia is among the areas of the country that have been hit by particularly heavy rain and flooding in recent months.

229 People Buried Alive By Landslides In Ethiopia

An Ethiopian illegal immigrant in transit to South Africa was reportedly left for dead by his colleagues in Zimbabwe after a car accident.
Tsegaye Summu (28), travelled with others in September and while in Zvishavane, a mining town in Midlands Province, a kombi they had hired was involved in an accident.
The other passengers reportedly escaped unhurt and had to look for alternative transport to proceed with their journey and left Summu by the roadside unconscious.
Summu was taken to Zvishavane Hospital under police guard and later moved to United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) for better care.
On Friday last week, he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Busani Sibanda charged with entering Zimbabwe without a valid permit.
However, the state couldn’t establish on which date and through which port of entry Summu entered the country.

Ethiopian Border Jumper In Car Accident Left For Dead In Zimbabwe

Zambian police say they will increase checks of vehicles at the country’s borders following the discovery over the weekend of the bodies of 27 Ethiopian migrants.
The men, all aged between 20 and 38, were found dumped by the side of the road on the outskirts of the Zambian capital, Lusaka, according to BBC News. 
They were found dumped in a farming area on the outskirts of the capital after they died from suspected hunger and exhaustion.
A sole survivor was found alive in the early hours of Sunday morning and rushed to a Lusaka hospital for treatment, while the dead were transported to the mortuary for identification and post-mortems to determine the exact cause of death.
Preliminary police investigations showed the victims were all males aged between 20 and 38 and had been dumped along a road by unknown people, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/twenty-seven-men-believed-be-ethiopian-migrants-found-dead-along-road-zambia-2022-12-11/">Reuters</a> reported citing a statement by Zambian police spokesperson Danny Mwale. He is quoted as saying:

Police and other security wings have since instituted investigations into the matter.
</blockquote>
Ethiopian migrants often use Zambia when travelling to countries such as South Africa, though reports of deaths in transit there are rare.
They are thought to have suffocated whilst trying to reach South Africa.
In October, the bodies of 25 Ethiopians were discovered in neighbouring Malawi.
The United Nations says 12 000 migrants have been recorded as missing across Africa since 2014.

Zambia Police To Increase Security After Discovery Of Bodies Of 27 Ethiopian Nationals

Another Ethiopian national has died on admission at Gwanda Provincial Hospital, bringing the number of deaths to four after the foreigners were involved in an accident last Thursday along the Harare–Beitbridge Highway.
Beitbridge District Hospital sources Sunday said that the fourth Ethiopian died on admission to the provincial hospital.
He was one of the two who were referred to the hospital due to the seriousness of their injuries. A source told NewsDay Zimbabwe:

He died at Gwanda Provincial Hospital, but the other victim is battling for his life.

Police officer commanding Beitbridge district, Chief Superintendent Tichaona Nyongo said the Ethiopians were still hospitalised and dismissed rumours that some of them had been kidnapped from the hospital. Nyongo said:

They are still at Beitbridge and I don’t know about those that escaped from hospital.

The accident allegedly happened at Tshapfuce, 20km outside Beitbridge, when another vehicle tried to stop the minibus which was carrying the Ethiopians. Unconfirmed reports said the driver of the minibus lost control of his vehicle, resulting in the accident.

Another Ethiopian National Dies At Gwanda Provincial  Hospital

The Warriors ended their miserable FIFA 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign with a whimper after being held to a 1-1 draw by Ethiopia in Harare on Sunday.
This means that Zimbabwe failed to register a single victory in six matches, the only team that failed to win in Group G.
Coach Norman Mapeza made five changes from the team that lost in South Africa on Thursday.
Only stand-in captain Khama Billiat, Gerald Takwara, Bruce Kangwa, Kelvin Madzongwe, Ishmael Wadi and David Moyo retained their places in the starting XI.
Kudakwashe Mahachi scored the opener in the 36th minute, striking from long range to beat the goalkeeper, who was off his line.
Ethiopia equalised in the 86th minute when Abubakar Ahmad evaded his markers and beat the advancing keeper before slotting home the equaliser.
The result, meanwhile, stretches Zimbabwe’s winless streak to eleven games across all competitions.

Interim Warriors coach Norman Mapeza has named his starting eleven to face Ethiopia in this afternoon’s dead rubber Group G FIFA 2022 World Cup qualifier.

Mapeza Names Warriors Starting XI To Face Ethiopia

Ethiopia is expelling seven senior U.N. officials to leave the country within 72 hours accusing them of “meddling” in internal affairs.”
The UN’s aid chief had warned a government blockade of aid had likely forced hundreds of thousands of people in the northern region of Tigray into famine 
The United States condemns the expulsions and saying it will not hesitate to use sanctions against those who obstruct humanitarian efforts.
Ethiopia has previously denied blocking food aid.
The seven people being expelled include the country heads of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). 

A statement from U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was “shocked” by the expulsions and added:

We are now engaging with the Government of Ethiopia in the expectation that the concerned UN staff will be allowed to continue their important work.

Speaking on the blockade, U.N. aid chief Martin Griffiths, the head of OCHA, said it is man-made and can be remedied by the act of government,” noting nearly a quarter of the children in Tigray are malnourished.
Ethiopian authorities previously accused aid workers of favouring and even arming the forces of Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the political party that controls the region which is in conflict with federal forces.
In August, Ethiopia suspended the operations of the Dutch branch of medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) and the Norwegian Refugee Council, accusing them of arming “rebel groups”.

Ethiopia Expels 7 UN Officials Accusing Them Of Meddling

The Zimbabwe national football team has returned from Ethiopia where they lost 0-1 against the hosts in a Group G World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.
The defeat has dented the Warriors’ hopes of qualifying for the 2022 Qatar World Cup and also put coach Zdravko Logarusic back into the spotlight.
Logarusic, who has one win in 14 matches, could be fired on Saturday when the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) board meets in Harare.
The ZIFA board will review the team’s performance in the aftermath of two uninspiring displays in the World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Ethiopia.
Zimbabwe drew 0-0 at home to South Africa in their Group G opening match of the 2022 Qatar World Cup qualifying campaign on Friday before losing 1-0 against Ethiopia away in their second match on Tuesday.

The Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) says it will broadcast live the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifier, Group G game between Ethiopia and the Warriors on its television channel, ZBCtv, this afternoon.
The encounter is scheduled for Bahir Dar International Stadium in the city of Bahir Dar. The kick-off is at 3 pm Zim/CAT.
The game will be available to watch on TV and stream feeds, but SuperSport TV will not bring any coverage of this match due to rights issues yet to be ironed out.
In a tweet this Friday, ZBCtv confirmed that it will show the match live with the build-up starting at 2:30 pm CAT. It said:

National team coach Zdravko Logarušic has demanded an improvement from his players when they take on Ethiopia in their second FIFA World Cup Group H qualifier at the Bahir Dar Stadium this Tuesday.

The Warriors were held to an insipid goalless draw by South Africa’s Bafana Bafana at the National Sports Stadium on Friday.
The Croat was left frustrated by individual and collective performances and has demanded an improvement. He said:

And when we regain possession, the ball should quickly go through and not going left and right. We should arrive in the scoring area as quick as possible.

Logarusic Demands Warriors Improvement

Over 60 people were found dead in a cargo container in Mozambique’s Tete Province, Aljazeera reports. A senior hospital official who spoke to the publication on the basis of anonymity suspected that the people (who are suspected to be Ethiopians) died of asphyxiation which is lack of oxygen.
The official said this to AFP:

60+ People Found Dead In A Cargo Container In Mozambique

In an interview after the tour of Ethiopia’s multi-million dollar industrial parks on the outskirts of Addis Ababa yesterday, President Mnangagwa said Zimbabwe must follow the same path of industrialisation.
Ethiopia industrial park is made up of textile companies. Ethiopia’s industrial parks were constructed by Chinese companies. Said Mnangagwa:
<blockquote>The history is that the Government of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia built these factory shells and then invited companies in the textile sector from India to come and do business here. As a result of that it’s now about six years old. This entity alone (Jay Jay Textiles) employees in excess of 4 000 workers but they have other places where they have similar factories having 45 000 employees in the past five years working in these shells built by the Government. I think this is the way to go. They have created employment for the youths and particularly women. You can see inside there that the young girls and women are working. The market, we have been briefed, are top end market in the USA. It is an eye opener that we also in Zimbabwe have the intention of creating economic zones, economic parks of this nature and that is the way. It creates employment. It brings technology. It brings you skills into the country. This is the way to go.</blockquote>

Mnangagwa Wants Zimbabwe To Copy Ethiopia's Industrialisation Model

Presidential spokesperson and the permanent secretary in the ministry of Media, Information and Broadcasting Services George Charamba has said that President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government was not going to extradite former Ethiopian dictator Mengistu Hailemariam. This comes after reports that the opposition has been calling for Hailemariam to be extradited to Ethiopia so that he can face justice. Charamba also told the opposition not to meddle in issues that it had no knowledge on.
Hailemariam fled from Ethiopia in 1991 after a brutal reign that left thousands of people dead and was granted asylum in Zimbabwe as an official guest of former president Robert Mugabe. Mengistu who was given the nickname “the Butcher of Addis Ababa” was convicted of genocide in absentia in December 2006 and sentenced to life in prison. However, after an appeal, he was sentenced to death in absentia by the Ethiopian High Court which overturned his life sentence.
Charamba said that Mengistu’s extradition was not on the new government’s priorities. Speaking to the Daily News, Charamba said:
<blockquote>I thought that was not a domestic issue, Where are they (the opposition) coming in?
The Ethiopian government has not said anything, who then are they to poke their noses when his own government has not said anything?
We cannot be seen spending time and effort on that issue when there are pressing national issues to attend to.

Mnangagwa Administration Will Not Extradite Former Ethiopian Dictator Mengistu Hailemariam

President Robert Mugabe has left the country for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to attend the 29th ordinary session of the African Union (AU). The summit kicked off on the 27th of June and will run up to the 4th of July, under the theme “Harnessing the Demographic Dividend Through Investments in Youth.” According to reports, the African leaders summit will also adopt proposals for the continent to get two permanent seats at the United Nations Security Council.
President Mugabe was seen off at the Harare International Airport by cabinet ministers, service chiefs, senior government officials and Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Misheck Sibanda.

President Mugabe off to Ethiopia

Ethiopian Airlines is set to fly from Madrid to Victoria Falls starting from the 24th of March.
The deal came as a result of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) that was signed by the Ministry of Tourism and the airline on the sidelines of Furtur Tourism Expo in Spain. In an interview with ZBC News ZTA head corporate affairs Mr Sugar Chagonda says the tourism sector has signed a number of agreements across the globe which are currently being worked on and awaiting implementation.

Ethiopian Airlines set to fly from Madrid to Victoria Falls starting March

President Robert Mugabe has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where he will join other leaders from the continent for the 28th African Union (AU) Summit which is being held under the theme, ‘Harnessing the Demographic Dividend Through Investment in the Youth’.
He was met by the Zimbabwean ambassador to Ethiopia, Ranga Chimbindi and Foreign Affairs Minister Cde Simbarashe Mumbengegwi. African leaders are expected to elect a new AU Commission chairperson as well as other commissioners of the AU’s top organ.
