The Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) has appointed Tineyi Rwasoka as the new acting chief executive officer (CEO).
In an internal memo to staff dated 18 January 2023, ZUPCO human resources manager Moses Mawire said Rwasoka’s appointment is with immediate effect. Reads the memo:

All employees are hereby advised of the following changes to management which are effective immediately.
Mr Tineyi Rwasoka has been appointed to the position of acting chief executive officer.
Ms Linda Samunderu has been appointed to the position of acting operations director.
May we all render our support to the two in the discharge of their new mandates.

Rwasoka replaced Everisto Madangwa, who has reportedly been reassigned to the position of finance director.
Madangwa had served as acting CEO for more than five years, a period when the state-owned company monopolised the public transport sector but dismally failed to deliver.

ZUPCO Appoints New Acting Chief Executive Officer

The Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) has assured the public that the fuel challenges that it faced on Monday have been resolved, therefore, there will be adequate transport today.
In a statement, ZUPCO had said there will be transport challenges “this evening” but the company’s chief executive officer Everisto Madangwa has clarified that the notice was related to yesterday (Monday) and not today. He said:

The situation has improved from yesterday and the fuel supplies we now have. So the notice was related to yesterday.
</blockquote>
In the statement that was issued on Monday, ZUPCO said the commuting public will face transport challenges due to delays in fuel deliveries at ZUPCO. The statement read:

The Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO), wishes to advise the commuting public that, there will be transport challenges this evening. This has resulted from delays in fuel deliveries at ZUPCO.
However, the commuting public should not panic as illustrious efforts are underway to ensure that the challenge is resolved.
We remain committed and will continue to serve the nation with safe, reliable and affordable travel.
We regret and apologize to all our valued customers for any inconvenience caused.

No Transport Woes On Tuesday Evening - ZUPCO

The Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) says it has created more than 7 000 jobs since the beginning of its revival programme in January 2019.
The Government commenced the ZUPCO revival after kombi operators withdrew their vehicles in protest over a 150% fuel price hike.
Commuter omnibus operators have been accused of causing chaos in urban areas by their unruly behaviour and also their tendency to wantonly hike fares could have forced the Government to act.
Since 2019, ZUPCO has recruited more drivers and conductors as it increases its fleet through purchasing more buses from China and Belarus as well as by adopting independent transporters.
ZUPCO acting chief executive officer Mr Everisto Madangwa told The Sunday Mail that the transporter now boasts a staff compliment of 7 512, up from just 366 in January 2019.
According to records, conductors, at 65 per cent, make up the largest number of employees followed by cashiers 12 per cent, inspectors 10 per cent, drivers 6 per cent, management 5 per cent and workshop manpower 2 per cent. Said Madangwa:

These are big numbers considering that it took us less than three years to get to this figure.
This is also in line with our own revival strategy as well as the National Development Strategy (NDS1).
For us as a country to achieve Vision 2030, we need a sustainable passenger transport system and this milestone shows that we are in the right direction.

100 more buses were reportedly offloaded in Durban, South Africa recently and were on their way to Harare.

ZUPCO Created 7 000 Jobs Since 2019

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_United_Passenger_Company" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO)</a> has to date mobilised 516 buses and 410 commuter omnibuses countrywide to operate under its franchise.
This was revealed by ZUPCO acting Chief Executive Officer Evaristo Madangwa in a telephone interview with the Chronicle from Harare. He said:
<blockquote>At the moment we have 516 buses under the scheme countrywide and 410 kombis. We are working on reaching our 1 000 kombis target and the progress made shows that we are heading there.</blockquote>
In Bulawayo, the number of commuter omnibuses under the ZUPCO franchise has risen from 18 last month to 96, with the target has been set at over 220 <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Kombi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">kombis</a> servicing the city.
ZUPCO urban commuter omnibus operators are charging $2 for a trip compared to $5 charged by the other kombis.

ZUPCO On Course To Hit The 1 000 Kombi Target

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_United_Passenger_Company" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (Zupco)</a> acting chief executive, Evaristo Madangwa, said that as of now, the company has managed to acquire over 250 commuter omnibuses for its franchise.
Speaking to The Herald on Monday, Madangwa, however, said that the transport utility will not work with just any kombi but those that are licensed, roadworthy with certificates of fitness, and operator’s licence among other things. He said:
<blockquote>I am proud to say that already we have 280 kombis under the scheme.
We are still far from our 1 000 kombi target, but so far work is progressing well.</blockquote>
Zupco Kombis charge lower fares compared to those run by private operators. For instance, in urban areas, a Zupco <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Kombi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Kombi</a> charges people $2 for a trip whilst commuter operators charge at least $5 for the same trip.
