The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) has announced examination registration fees for the October 2024 Grade 7 examinations.
In a statement, ZIMSEC said the 2024 Grade 6 classes are allowed to register and make staggered payments towards their final examinations in 2025.
The examination fees are pegged in United States dollars but parents and guardians can pay the fees using the currency of their choice, that is, Zimbabwe dollars, United States dollars, or South African rand. ZIMSEC said:

The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council would like to inform its valued stakeholders of the gazetted examination registration fees for the October 2024 Grade 7 examinations.
The 2024 Grade 6 classes can register and make staggered payments towards their final examinations in 2025.
The 2024 examination fees are pegged against the USD however, Parents and Guardians are advised to pay the fees using the currency of their choice (ZWL, USD or RANDS).
Parents and Guardians who wish to make payments in ZWL must make payments at their respective centres during the period of 19 March to 26 March 2024 using the interbank rate of the 19th of March which shall be confirmed to all Examination centres by ZIMSEC.

The closing dates for registration must be confirmed by the school/ centre to avoid any inconveniences, ZIMSEC said.
The Grade 7 2024 termly examination fees for all subjects for learners at public schools, local authority, and not-for-profit Mission schools have been pegged at US$10 while learners at private schools, colleges, and private candidates will pay US$22.
The Grade 6 2024 termly examination fees for all subjects for learners at public schools, local authority, and not-for-profit Mission schools have been pegged at US$5 while learners at private schools, colleges, and private candidates will pay US$11. Added ZIMSEC:

ZIMSEC Announces Grade 6 & 7 Examination Fees

The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) has announced the opening of registrations for the June and November 2024 Examinations. ZIMSEC has advised guardians and candidates to visit their school or centre for registration.
The registration fees are pegged in United States dollars but candidates are allowed to pay the fees in the currency of their choice (Rand, USD, ZWL).
In a statement, ZIMSEC said those paying in ZWL will have to use the USD interchange rate of March for June registration. ZIMSEC said:

For payments in ZWL, the prevailing interbank USD to ZWL exchange rate as of the 13th to 20th of March 2024, for the June session, and the 19th to the 26th of March 2024, for the November session, will be confirmed by ZIMSEC to all examination centres.

ZIMSEC said candidates who want to sit for the June examination should have completed their CALA requirements.
The examinations management body also said learners under the Basic Education Assistance Model (BEAM) will not be funded if they want to retake their examination. It said:

Government subsidy does not apply to candidates retaking any subjects, BEAM does not support retake examinations and candidates should have fulfilled the CALA requirements for them to sit for the June and/or November examinations.

ZIMSEC Opens Registration For June And November 2024 Examinations

CCC leader Nelson Chamisa said that if his party wins the upcoming elections and gets into government, he will review the Zimbabwe education system, <a href="https://tellzim.com/chamisa-promises-to-scrap-cala-school-exam-fees/">reported TellZim News</a>.
Chamisa promised to scrap the Continuous Assessment Learning Activities (CALA), school fees from primary level to advanced level as well as ZIMSEC examination fees.
Addressing party supporters at Muchakata Business Centre in Masvingo Central Constituency, Chamisa said his government will introduce a new curriculum with input from education stakeholders, among them teachers and school heads. He said:

We will remove CALAs which are forcing parents to be in school every day, we need to make sure we restore dignity to our education system and make it the best as before.
We cannot impose policies without people’s input as they did with Education 5.0.
Ours will have the input of headmasters and teachers for they are experts in that field.

Chamisa also said his government will ensure that education is free for all learners and the State will facilitate loans for university and college students. He said:

In Zambia they are saying free education at primary level, if you go to South Africa they don’t pay examination fees, it’s the responsibility of the examining authority.
You can’t say you want to have an exam and you say Grade Sevens pay exam fees. No grade seven exam, no form four or ‘A’ level exam fees. If people pay fees then that’s it.
Under our government, parents will only pay from Form One to Four just to exercise their responsibility, at “A” level the government should take over, after that loans for tertiary education are then activated.

The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) has criticised CALAs, saying they are expensive and time-consuming and their introduction in schools has negatively affected learners’ progress.
Parents and guardians across the country have also urged the Government to scrap CALAs saying they make learning difficult for pupils.

Chamisa Promises To Scrap CALAs, School And Exam Fees

Teacher unions say the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) Ordinary and Advanced Level examination fees are too high and some learners may fail to continue with their education.
ZIMSEC set the 2023 examination fees at US$24 per subject but candidates will pay US$11, while the government pays the balance.
Advanced Level examination fees are at US$48, with candidates paying US$22, while the government pays the balance.
In a statement, the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) said civil servants will struggle to raise the examination fees for their children. Reads part of the statement:

ZIMSEC pegged its registration fees to an equivalent of US$24 dollars per subject. This gives an average Ordinary Level candidate the cost burden of US$120 for a minimum of five subjects.
This is occurring in a context where the average civil servant is earning close to US$150 per month, hence making the examination fee way above their means.
It also means that the average learner will require more than four months to raise adequate funds to register for examinations while the Friday, April 14 deadline leaves students with less than six days to pay.

Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe president Takavafira Zhou concurred.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200010004/teachers-lament-inhumane-exorbitant-zimsec-fees">NewsDay</a>, Zhou said ZIMSEC should extend the registration deadline to give parents and guardians more time to raise the required examination fees. He said:

The shift by ZIMSEC from US$22 to US$24 will heap burning coals upon the heads of thousands of Zimbabwean parents.
It is prudent for ZIMSEC to realise that many pupils will drop out of school due to exorbitant school fees.
Government must, therefore, make an urgent intervention to ensure that pupils can register for examinations.
Above all, the period of registration is too short, and an extension until schools open will provide parents with a breathing space to hunt for examination fees.

Examination registration fees are pegged in USD and parents can make payments in ZWL, USD or ZAR.

ZIMSEC Examination Fees "Unhumane" - Teachers

The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) has announced the interbank rate to be used by candidates when paying examination fees for the 2023 public examinations.
In a public notice, ZIMSEC also announced the deadlines for the payment of the fees. It said:

[For] those who would like to make payments in the Interbank rate for Grade Seven, to be paid within the period of 3 March to 10 March 2023, the exchange rate to be applied for payments is $989 to US$1.
For June Ordinary and Advanced Level examinations, to be paid within the period 15 March 2023, the exchange rate to be applied for payments is $999 to US$1.
Payments for the examination fees should not be paid directly into ZIMSEC accounts.
Candidates/ Parents should make payments to the school or centre registration for forward remission to ZIMSEC.

Ordinary Level candidates in public schools will pay US$11 per subject with Government subsidizing the cost by US$24.
Private candidates in public schools will pay US$24, the same as private schools’ candidates.
Advanced Level candidates in public schools are expected to pay US$22.
A’ Level private candidates in public schools and candidates in private schools will pay US$48.

ZIMSEC Announces Interbank Rate For Examination Fees

The Zimbabwe Schools Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) has maintained the 2022 Grade Seven examination fees.
Parents and guardians will pay US$29 for all subjects while Government subsidizes the fees with US$36 for the US$65 fees.
The amount should be paid in either foreign or local currency based on the prevailing interbank rate on 03 March 2023. ZIMSEC said in a statement:

Please be advised that the examination fees for 2023 is US$65 for all subjects.
Government will contribute US$36 for candidates in public schools while parents and guardians will pay US$29.
Candidates from private schools and colleges will pay the full cost of US$65 as examination fees for the year.

ZIMSEC spokesperson Nicky Dlamini said the termly figure will be US$10 but parents can pay the whole amount which is US$29 between 3 March and 10 March. Said Dlamini:

We are basically using the same fees structure as that of last year. If a parent or guardian wants to pay the whole amount once, they will fork out US$29, between March 3 and March 10.
If one decides to pay in installments, one will pay US$10 per term.

ZIMSEC Grade 7 Examination Fees Unchanged

The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) will announce the Zimbabwe dollar rate for examination registration fees on 22 July 2022.
ZIMSEC delayed announcing examination fees in Zimbabwe dollars in order to cushion itself against inflation since the exchange rate changes every week.
Speaking in an interview with The Sunday News, ZIMSEC spokesperson Nichollete Dlamini said the rate will not change when schools register candidates from 22 July to 29 July.
She also warned schools against setting their own deadlines for payment of exam fees. Said Dlamini:

Since the interbank rate changes weekly, we will announce the rate that will be used. It will be a blanket rate that will apply to all schools.
From 22 July to 29 July, we will hold that rate and it will not change so as to allow all parents to pay in an equitable way.
We have also heard of schools setting their own deadlines for the payment of fees and we want to make it clear that it is not allowed.
Some schools might perhaps say they want to end payments on 25 or 26 July for administration purposes so they remit to ZIMSEC and that may be understandable, but they have a month to do that.
It is also important to note that registration is not the same as payment.
Schools have been allowed to register pupils while they wait for payment which is forthcoming.
Registration serves as a way of helping schools determine just how many pupils, they can expect payment from.

Dlamini said parents and guardians are allowed to make payments using any of the currencies in use in the country.
Initially, ZIMSEC had announced that examination fees can only be paid in Zimbabwe dollars but this is no longer the case since the government recently passed a law making foreign currencies legal tender.
According to ZIMSEC, Grade Seven examination fees will be US$30 for all the subjects.
Ordinary Level fees were pegged at US$11 per subject for candidates in public, local authorities-run, and non-profit making schools with the Government paying a subsidy of US$24 while those in private schools and colleges fork out US$24 per subject.
Advanced Level candidates in public and local authority-run schools will pay US$22 per subject with the Government contributing US$26 in subsidy.
Private schools and college candidates shall pay US$48 per subject.

ZIMSEC To Announce Zim Dollar Rate For Registration On 22 July

The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) says schools are not allowed to demand examination fees exclusively in foreign currency.
ZIMSEC spokesperson Nicky Dlamini told The Sunday News that parents and guardians are allowed to make payments using any of the currencies in use in the country (that is Zimbabwe dollars, US Dollars, Rands, Pula, etcetera).
Dlamini was responding to reports that some schools around the country have been demanding payment for examination fees exclusively in foreign currency. She said:
<blockquote>
Schools cannot force parents to pay in foreign currency. That is not allowed and therefore against the regulations.
We have received reports of schools doing this and they are being reprimanded accordingly.
This is where parents have to step up and play a watchdog role so they can alert us when schools are flouting the rules and asking them to pay in forex.
</blockquote>
Dlamini said ZIMSEC had initially given the green light to schools, particularly those around border towns, to receive payments in foreign currency for schools.
She said the schools had applied to ZIMSEC requesting a waiver allowing them to deal in forex.
The examinations body had previously announced that all examination fees must be paid in Zimbabwe dollars. Dlamini said:

After we made the announcement that parents can pay the examination fees at the interbank rate equivalent to the quoted USD amounts, we received a letter from schools in areas like Beitbridge and Lower Chiredzi asking for a waiver that would allow them to pay in hard currency.
This is because parents in those areas, use foreign currency on a daily basis and it would be a bit hard for them to get access to RTGS to pay the fees.
So, we have now resolved to allow parents to pay in whatever currency they have access to at that particular time.
If they have rands or RTGS they can pay the equivalent of the fee that was gazetted.
</blockquote>
Dlamini added that all schools across the country can collect the money in foreign currency as the Government has adopted a multi-currency system but those that receive payments in forex must also remit the same to the examination body. She said:
<blockquote>
So, schools can accept all currencies and we made this regulation in light of the monetary policy resolutions that have been announced by the Government recently.
However, it is important for schools to also note that, when they receive foreign currency, whether it’s USD or rands, they also have to receipt and also remit to ZIMSEC in that currency.
We will not allow a situation where schools accept foreign currency from parents but want to remit RTGS.
Schools that attempt to do that will be reprimanded and punished.
