The government has recommended that people with flu-like symptoms wear masks and seek early medical assistance.
Some organisations have made face masks mandatory while some individuals are choosing to do so voluntarily to protect themselves and others from the flu.
Face masks were mandatory at the height of the coronavirus crisis as the government sought to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care, Sleiman Kwidini, told the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/face-masks-are-backpublic-takes-measures-to-curb-flu-outbreak/">Chronicle</a> that the country is not experiencing a flu outbreak but those with flu-like symptoms should wear masks in public places. He said:
<blockquote>
We encourage those with flu-like symptoms to mask up in schools and at the workplace. It’s not like an outbreak, we are in winter and we expect such cases. Everything is under control and people should not be worried.
We also encourage people to stay hydrated by taking lots of fluids and taking over-the-counter common cold remedies.

Mpilo Central Hospital clinical director, Professor Solwayo Ngwenya, warned that as the country approaches the peak of the winter season, cases of flu will increase. He said:

It is good to note that people are responding well to this flu and most seem to be masking up willingly.
This is a great indicator that people remember the COVID-19 campaigns and are still adhering to them.
</blockquote>
The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) warned members of the public that chances of getting a cough, influenza or a cold increase during this transition period towards winter, hence people should dress warmly and ensure that vulnerable members of society are kept warm both early morning and late evening.

Government Recommends Mask-Wearing To Curb Flu Outbreak

The Government has said it is no longer mandatory for people to wear face masks indoors, a requirement that has been in place since 2020 to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
However, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education says learners should continue wearing masks and practising social distancing.
The lifting of the mask mandate comes after the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Friday declared that COVID-19 was no longer a public health emergency of international concern.
National COVID-19 task force coordinator Dr. Agnes Mahomva said people are still encouraged to wear face masks in poorly ventilated areas. <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/masks-no-longer-mandatory/">She said:</a>
<blockquote>
Cabinet specifically dropped the mandatory wearing of face masks but specifically recommended that we must still wear face masks if we are in a place that is at high risk of spreading COVID-19.
That is what Zimbabwe is doing and in line with the recommendations of WHO and in line with what we have learned in the country.
We must remain vigilant. Cabinet removed the mandatory aspect but strongly recommended that if you are at high risk, if you are in a crowded space, if you are in a poorly ventilated places, it recommends that you wear your masks in line with the new normal.
WHO announced that COOVID-19 is no longer a public emergency but if you go on the same statement, they go on to specifically to urge countries to remain vigilant as COVID-19 is not yet over.
Based on that, nations should remain vigilant and be vigilant in line with what we have seen and based on our experiences adopting a new normal.
New normal means we are not going back to where we were before COVID-19.
A new normal means institutionalising those best practices that we have been doing and successes that we have recommended and making sure that we remain vigilant.
</blockquote>
Before the latest development, it was mandatory for everyone to wear masks in public places, including shops, churches, markets, and public transportation.
Failure to comply with the mask mandate resulted in fines or other penalties.

COVID-19: Wearing Of Masks No Longer Mandatory - Govt

The government has gazetted Statutory Instrument 169 of 2022 making it mandatory to wear face masks in public places.
According to the regulations, which were announced by the Minister of Health and Childcare, members of the public are obliged to wear masks indoors at workplaces and places to which the public has access or in public conveyances (taxis and commuter omnibuses and passenger trains and aeroplanes).
As for outdoors, face masks are mandatory for people who have not been vaccinated for COVID-19 “at least twice”. Reads SI 169/22:

THE Minister of Health has, in terms of section 8(1) of the Public Health (COVID-19 Prevention, Containment and Treatment) Regulations, 2020 (published in Statutory Instrument 77 of 2020), made the following order:—
1. This order may be cited as the Public Health (COVID-19 Prevention, Containment and Treatment) (National Lockdown) (No. 2) (Amendment) Order, 2022 (No. 42).
2. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in the Public Health (COVID-19 Prevention, Containment and Treatment) (National Lockdown) (No. 2) Order, 2020), published in Statutory Instrument 200 of 2020, the Public Health (COVID-19 Prevention, Containment and Treatment) (National Lockdown) (No. 2) Order, 2022), published in Statutory Instrument 67 of 2022, is amended by the insertion of the following paragraph after paragraph (f)—
“(g) the wearing of face masks is mandatory —
(i) indoors at workplaces and places to which the public has access, or in public conveyances (taxis and commuter and other buses, goods, public service vehicles and trains and aeroplanes carrying passengers);
(ii) outdoors in public places, except for those individuals who are fully vaccinated (that is to say those who have been vaccinated at least twice against COVID-19).”.

COVID-19: Govt Announces New Regulations On Face Masks

Larry Moyo, a Zimbabwean journalist and the founding editor of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/H-Metro" title="H-Metro">H-Metro</a> tabloid newspaper has called for the removal of the wearing of face masks directive saying they have saved their purpose. 
Posting on Twitter Moyo said:

Face masks are now a public nuisance…August 1 they must fall <img alt="🙏" class="emoji" decoding="async" draggable="false" src="https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/72x72/1f64f.png" style="background-color: #ffffff;"/>
</blockquote>
Zimbabwe announced in 2020 that wearing face masks was one of the various measures that should be taken to stop the spread and transmission of the coronavirus.
The government made it a punishable offence with the Infomation, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Ministry’s permanent secretary Ndavaningi Mangwana saying one <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/05/04/watch-you-will-be-jailed-for-1-year-if-you-are-caught-in-public-without-wearing-a-mask/">can be imprisoned for one year if they were seen in a public place without a face mask.</a>
This was after the World Health Organisation (WHO) had recommended the use of face masks.
Moyo’s remarks come as some countries are relaxing or scrapping face mask requirements. <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/03/15/namibia-scraps-mandatory-wearing-of-face-masks/">Namibia removed the face mask requirement in March 2022.</a>
<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/05/15/rwanda-has-scrapped-a-requirement-for-face-masks/">Rwanda scrapped</a> the requirement in May while <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/06/22/south-africa-scraps-wearing-of-face-masks-covid-19-regulations-on-people-entering-sa-gatherings/">South Africa removed the measure in June.</a>
Cases of COVID-19 have also been going down in Zimbabwe in recent months. As of 30 July 2022, Zimbabwe had 256 378 confirmed cases after only 2 new cases had been recorded on the day.
These cases included 250 316 recoveries and 5 577 deaths. A total of 6 372 958 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19.
Proponents of the removal of the face mask requirement have been quoting Prof David Heymann, who chaired the WHO’s scientific and technical advisory group for infectious hazards, who said <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/04/07/who-insists-need-healthy-people-wear-masks/">wearing masks is for the protection of others, not oneself.</a> He said:

The findings, made in 2020, conflicted with advice from the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention, which urged the US public to wear masks in public places.

"Face Masks Are Now A Public Nuisance" - H-Metro Founding Editor

Kenya’s Ministry of Health has lifted the mandatory wearing of masks that was imposed on 3 April 2020 at the height of COVID-19 infections and hospitalisations in the country.
Announcing the development on Friday, Health Minister Mutahi Kagwe, said Kenyans should, however, maintain social distancing to ensure the risk of spreading the coronavirus is limited. Said Kagwe:

All Kenyans to continue to adhere to social measures, ensure frequent hand washing, sanitising and exercise personal responsibility.
There has been a lot of debate on facemasks. Wearing of facemasks in open places is now lifted.
</blockquote>
Kagwe called on his compatriots to continue observing other ministry of health protocols when in public spaces. He said:
<blockquote>
If you are going to eat in a meat joint, the standards must be high. The sanitation, washing of hands must be top-notch.
You must also respect the people eating in your joint. You must respect your customers and make sure the restaurant is clean. There will be penalties if that does not happen.
</blockquote>
Kenya has recorded 323 140 cases of COVID-19 and 5 644 deaths but vaccination rates remain low.
Only 28.5 per cent of the adult population was fully vaccinated as of March 10, 2022.

Kenya Lifts Mandatory Wearing Of Face Masks

The Zimbabwe Republic Police last week arrested thousands of people for not wearing face masks in violation of COVID-19 regulations.
Some members of the public lowered their guard following the relaxation of the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/01/01/zimbabwean-national-denied-entry-into-sa-for-not-wearing-a-mask/">national lockdown regulations</a> by President Emmerson Mnangagwa last Monday. In a statement, ZRP said:
<blockquote>The ZRP has noted with great concern an increase in the number of people being arrested for failure to wear face masks countrywide since the relaxation of strict lockdown measures by the government.
1 186 people were arrested on March 1, 1 965 on March 2 and 2 122 on March 3. Members of the public are advised to observe all health and safety protocols aimed at reducing the spread of the deadly Covid-19.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, health experts have warned against complacency saying the relaxation of lockdown protocols should not be a passport for citizens to behave irresponsibly.
They urge members of the public to observe recommendations by the World Health Organisation (WHO) which include wearing face masks, practicing social distancing, and washing of hands.
Zimbabwe experienced a second wave of the coronavirus towards the end of 2020 prompting the government to impose strict conditions to curb its spread.
Since December, a handful of senior government officials including the former Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Dr. Sibusiso Moyo, succumbed to COVID-19.
Of late, numbers of new cases and fatalities have been going down giving hope that the country was finally weathering the coronavirus storm.

Thousands Arrested For Not Wearing Masks

Zimbabwean freelance journalist Hopewell Chin’ono has offered 5 000 masks to local schools following the circulation of videos on social media of police officers slapping schoolchildren for not wearing masks.
In one of the videos, which multiple reports claim was recorded at Kwekwe High, a female police officer is seen slapping a girl on the cheek for not wearing a face mask. Chin’ono posted on Twitter:
<blockquote>This police-woman was slapping all school kids without masks at Kwekwe High.
These kids come from poor homes due to economic decadence caused by looting and plunder of Zim’s resources.
This is the result of corruption. I have 5000 masks, schools without masks inbox. 1st come basis.</blockquote>

WATCH: Police Officer Assaults Schoolchildren For Not Wearing Masks

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers deployed in the Harare Gardens are reportedly extorting money from citizens for allegedly not wearing face masks properly.
A woman who spoke to The Mirror said she was in a group of 15 people arrested and taken to a Police base in the gardens at around 9 am on Monday and were forced to pay US$5 in bribes.
She said they were detained for 2 hours inside a Police post on the pretext that a lorry would come and ferry them to Harare Central Police Station where they would pay fines.
However, no police truck came to take them and they were eventually called outside the Police post one by one and released on paying a bribe, the woman alleged.
National Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said a team has been dispatched to Harare Gardens to investigate the matter but said he suspected the victims were swindled by fake cops.
The victim further told The Mirror that she was supposedly arrested for violating coronavirus regulations, something which she claimed the police officers were also guilty of. She said:
<blockquote>I am so disgusted and shocked by the rogue behaviour of the Police that I am ready to identify the culprits if a professional parade is to be put together…
Those cops were so rude and menacing you don’t understand why they are so angry. A female cop said her speciality in the force is to torture and beat up suspects.
What surprised us is that the officers arrested us for allegedly violating Covid-19 regulations but the Police base where we were taken to had no sanitisers, the cops had no masks and there was no social distance.
When we asked them about those, they got angry.</blockquote>
Police and soldiers are paid far much more than other government employees such as teachers, nurses and doctors.

Harare Gardens Cops Extort Citizens Of US$5 Over Face Masks

Founder of Higherlife Foundation Strive Masiyiwa said that people should make it a habit to wear masks for the next twelve months in order to combat the spread of the deadly novel coronavirus. He wrote on his Facebook page:
<blockquote>By now it should be clear to everybody that the most powerful tool to fight coronavirus infection is the humble Mask.
We have to wear Masks for the next 12 months, every day, in much the same way, we wear clothes. They must become an essential part of our clothing, like underwear!
If you wear the same Mask every day, it will become smelly, and lose its real effectiveness. Every person should have at least three masks and change one every day.
An old bedsheet can make great masks. For children, old school uniforms are good mask materials.
Putting on a Mask is bigger than washing hands, but together, masks and regular washing of hands will stop the spread of Covid-19.</blockquote>
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has indicated that wearing masks in public places could provide “a barrier for potentially infectious droplets”.
While the wearing of face masks is not intended to protect the wearer, it helps to prevent the spread of the virus from the wearer to others.

'Masks Should Become An Essential Part Of Our Clothing, Like Underwear': Masiyiwa

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has warned members of the public of unscrupulous individuals who are collecting used face masks, washing, and then selling them.
The practice is dangerous as it undermines efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus.
Posting on their Twitter account, the Ministry of Health and Child Care called on people to cut up their masks whenever they wish to dispose of them. The Ministry said:
<blockquote>There are some people who are collecting used face masks, washing them and selling them to unsuspecting people. To avoid this, members of the public are being urged to cut up their used face masks before proper disposal.
Burning is another option that you can use.</blockquote>
According to the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) guidelines used gloves and face mask should be washed with water and soap for 20 seconds, and then be cut into small parts to prevent re-use.

Govt Warns Of Used Face Masks On The Market

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) will arrest all people leaving their homes without wearing masks starting tomorrow, Monday 4 May 2020, Sunday News reports.
This was revealed by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Nick Mangwana during an interview with the publication. The report says:
<blockquote> Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Mr Nick Mangwana told Sunday News that wearing face masks in public was now law, after a Statutory Instrument was gazetted by the President yesterday.</blockquote>
Deputy Information Minister Energy Mutodi added that members of the public who will venture into the Central Business District, shops or public places without masks will be arrested. He tweeted:
<blockquote>With effect from tomorrow, Monday 4 May, police will arrest anyone seen without putting on a mask in the CBD, entering shops or any public places.</blockquote>
In a special address to the nation on Friday, President Emmerson Mnangagwa announced that among other Level 2 guidelines, all people must wear face masks of any type, even home-made cloth ones, in all public spaces and when they are outside of their homes.
Under the new regulations, businesses are allowed to operate between 8 am and 3 pm and authorities will ensure that there is compliance.

ZRP To Arrest All People Leaving Their Homes Without Face Masks Starting Tomorrow

The price of surgical masks have reportedly shot up after President Mnangagwa’s Friday announcement that all citizens in public places are supposed to wear masks in an effort to curb spreading COVID-19, New Zimbabwe reports.
Pharmaceuticals and shop owners who spoke to the publication about the sudden surge is mask prices said;
<blockquote>I imported my surgical masks from South Africa and there is no way I can sell them in local currency. The masks are made from very expensive material and that is why they are pricy
I have been forced to raise my price from 40 bond to 82 because of the sudden high demand. I have already run out of stock</blockquote>
However, some informal traders are reportedly selling homemade cheap masks for as little as ZWL$30 according to Memory Kabasa who spoke to the publication and said:
<blockquote>I make the masks using my sewing machine at home. I can make 20 to 40 masks a day but my challenge is that I do not have enough raw material because most of the Indian shops which sell the raw material are closed due to COVID-19</blockquote>
