A 51-year-old man employed by Zimsend Bulawayo as a driver, Bongani Matshazi, lost US$7 000 and ZAR10 000 to a traditional healer and then reported a case of robbery to the Police to cover the theft.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) alleges that on 29 February 2024, Matshazi, whose duties include delivering cash to Zimsend money transfer outlets, was instructed to deliver US$7 000 and ZAR10 000 to an outlet in Plumtree.
But before he left Bulawayo for Plumtree, Matshazi went to see his traditional healer, Dr Musa who had previously instructed him to bring money from his workplace for a ritual for him to get promoted.
Matshazi allegedly handed over US$7 000 and ZAR10 000 for the ritual. Musa wrapped the money in a black cloth and performed the ritual.
When Matshazi got home to perform the last part of the ritual he realized that Musa had swapped the money for ZWL$100 notes and paper cuttings.
He then reported a case of robbery to the Police to cover the theft. Matshazi claimed he was robbed at Khami Bridge on his way to Plumtree.
However, during investigations, the vehicle tracker revealed that he never stopped at Khami Bridge, instead he had stopped for a considerable time at the location where he met Musa. He had no choice but to come clean to the Police.
Matshazi was arraigned before the Plumtree Magistrates Court facing charges of making a false report to the Police.
He did not waste the court’s time and pleaded guilty to the charge wherein he was sentenced to a fine of US$200 or 5 months imprisonment.

Traditional Healer Steals US$7 000, ZAR10 000 From Client

A 47-year-old Harare woman who last week claimed to have lost over US$62 000 to three robbers has been arrested for making a false report.
The woman claimed robbers armed with a pistol raided while she was counting the money in her bedroom at a house in Glen Lorne, Harare at around 1.30 pm and stole the cash.
A Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) report seen by Pindula News on 10 November 2022 read:

The ZRP is investigating a robbery case where a woman aged 47 was robbed US$62 150 cash on November 9, 2022 at around 1.30pm in Glen Lorne, Harare by three unknown suspects.
The suspects, who were armed with an unidentified pistol pounced at the complainant’s residence and went to the bedroom where she was counting cash. They threatened her with a firearm before stealing the cash.

Police then appealed to anyone with information that might assist them with investigations to contact any nearest police station. 
Some members of the public were sceptical while some blamed the alleged robbery on the erosion of the public’s confidence in the banking sector. Said one commentator:

Following investigations, Police sources said the woman had since been arrested for making a false report.
It is alleged that the woman was owing a lot of people money and wanted to get relief or sympathy from these people.

Harare Woman Arrested For "Lying" That She Had Been Robbed Of US$62 000

A man from Luveve suburb in Bulawayo has appeared in court facing charges of making a false report to the police.
Elias Mamera (29) appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Busani Sibanda facing charges of deliberately supplying false information to a public authority as defined in Section 180 (1) (a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.
He was not asked to plead and was granted $20 000 bail.
It is alleged that Mamera made a false report of a purported theft to the police claiming Clinton Tarugamuchira Muregere, a mechanic, had sold his vehicle which he had left with him for repairs.
On 4 September 2022 and at around 6 PM, Mamera went to ZRP Bulawayo Central Police Station and reported that on 22 July 2022 he left his motor vehicle, a Honda CRV, to Muregere so that he could fix it.
Mamera went on to state that Muregere, after repairing the motor vehicle, sold it without his consent.
A case of theft of a motor vehicle was then opened and a docket was sent to CID Vehicle Theft Squad in Bulawayo for investigations.
However, following investigations, the police established that Mamera had actually sold the vehicle to Muregere and was paid part of the payment and Muregere was still owing him a balance of US$470.

Man In Court For Making False Criminal Report

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has sternly warned members of the public against making false reports to the police.
This comes after police in Bulawayo arrested Erica Musindo (40) for allegedly making a false report to the police, saying she had been robbed of US$5 100 and a car from her home. Police said through their Twitter page:

The ZRP warns the public against making false reports to the police. On 22/08/21, police in Bulawayo arrested Erica Musindo (40) for making a false robbery case to the Police at ZRP Pumula on 21/08/21.
The suspect reported that her family had been robbed of US$5 100 cash and a Mazda Axella motor vehicle.
Investigations by police revealed that the alleged stolen vehicle was being held at CID TFC Bulawayo as an exhibit in a case of theft from a car which occurred on 21/08/21 outside Highlanders Sports Club in Bulawayo.

Police said Adrian Morris Virima, the husband of the suspect, was allegedly using the alleged stolen vehicle as a getaway car in criminal escapades.
