FC Wangu Mazodze’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) aspirations are hanging by a thread after a 0-0 draw against Tenax CS over the weekend.
Affectionately known as The Kingdom Boys, FC Wangu Mazodze were once leading the ZIFA Eastern Region Soccer League (ERSL) with 14 points, but their position has since become precarious.
They are now just two points ahead of Triangle United and Tenax CS, who are in second and third place, respectively.
With 65 points from 29 games, FC Wangu Mazodze are closely followed by Triangle United, who also have 63 points from the same number of games.
Tenax CS, with one more game played, are tied on 63 points with Triangle United.
With only three games left in the season, Mazodze’s path to promotion to the Premier Soccer League is narrow, and they can afford little room for error.
In 2023, FC Wangu Mazodze missed out on promotion after drawing with Renco Mine FC on the final day.
Tenax FC also missed out on PSL promotion that year due to a board decision revealing they had fielded an unregistered player in their final match, which handed the promotion spot to Bikita Minerals FC instead.
Mazodze’s remaining fixtures include an away match against Mutare City Rovers and two crucial home games against St. Paul’s Musami FC and Surrey FC.

FC Wangu Mazodze's PSL Dreams On The Line

Richard Mazodze, owner of the Eastern Region Soccer League (ERSL) leaders FC Wangu Mazodze, has been sucked into a match-fixing scandal allegedly involving his club.
The businessman, who is based in the United States and has expressed his intention to run for the ZIFA presidency, is accused of violating rule 14.1.3 of the league’s regulations.
It is alleged that a phone number linked to Mazodze was used to contact players from Triangle United and Chiredzi Stars to influence the outcomes of matches between his team (FC Wangu Mazodze) and those two clubs.
According to the ERSL  charge sheet dated October 1, 2024, seen by <a href="https://www.soccer24.co.zw/2024/10/02/zifa-presidency-aspirant-richard-mazodze-sucked-in-match-fixing-scandal/">Soccer24</a>, FC Wangu Mazodze are set to appear before the league’s Disciplinary Committee this Saturday. Reads the charge sheet in part:

On 16 September 2024 the Eastern Region Soccer League received a letter of complaint, from Triangle United Football Club alleging that FC Wangu Mazodze though their, messengers Simbarashe Mukaro known as Wexman and Provide Murozvi also known as, Fox infiltrated Triangle United Football Club players in an attempt to influence the, outcome of the match between the two teams as stated in attached WhatsApp chats, posted by NYC using number +1 (646)…., the name and number used by the club owner and sponsor Mr. Richard Mazodze.
On Thursday 26th September 2024 other WhatsApp messages were brought to the attention of the Eastern Region Soccer League alleging that the same modus operandi, was used again when Football Club Wangu Mazodze played a soccer match against, Chiredzi Stars at Chishamiso Stadium.
In that match and at the end of the game the referee was assaulted by Chiredzi Stars officials and supporters for alleged match fixing. Football Club Wangu Mazodze chairman Mr Trevor Chateuka was mentioned in the attached WhatsApp messages circulated again by NYC WhatsApp number in question.
The conduct by Football Club Wangu Mazodze, its officials and or representatives and, the conduct of the club owner Mr Richard Mazodze and chairman Mr Trevor Chateuka, was in complete violation of principles of fair play, ERSL rules and regulations as well as, the laws of the game.
What is disturbing and surprising to the Complainant is that, Football Club Wangu Mazodze has not disassociated itself or condemned the circulating, messages despite having seen them.

FC Wangu Mazodze Owner Implicated In Match-Fixing Allegations

The ZIFA Central Region Soccer League executive has suspended FC Wangu Mazodze City after the Kwekwe-based team failed to fulfil three consecutive matches.
The club has been struggling financially since the withdrawal of sponsorship by US-based Richard Wangu Mazodze, who also owns FC Wangu Mazodze in the Eastern Region Soccer League.
To be clear, FC Wangu Mazodze City and FC Wangu Mazodze are two different clubs playing in two different Division One Leagues.
A letter advising FC Wangu Mazodze City’s suspension from the ZIFA Central Region Soccer League reads in part:

We refer to the above matter and advise that due to the club’s failure to fulfill three sanctioned matches, FC Wangu Mazodze City has been suspended with immediate effect.
Consequently, FC Wangu Mazodze City loses all its membership rights as defined in the ZIFA statutes with immediate effect.
The club is no longer entitled to take part in any league competitions effective 29 September 2024.

Just over a week ago, FC Wangu Mazodze City head coach Isaac Nyabvure criticised the club’s administration following a 0-1 loss to Sheasham FC at Baghdad Stadium.
Nyabvure expressed concern about the players’ welfare, stating that the club’s financial difficulties hinder its ability to provide the necessary support for players to compete effectively. He said at the time (via <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/chinese-investors-wreak-havoc-in-zimbabwe-mountains-are-disappearing-whilst-the-countrys-economy-sinks-deeper-report/">The Mirror</a>):

The boys played well and according to our game plan, we managed to hold the fort for 80 minutes against a formidable side.
A lapse in concentration did cost us the game, our defenders failed to narrow the gap and our goalkeeper went down early. Our players are trying their best with the little resources we have.
Our greatest challenge as a club is the administration and welfare of players. We are struggling financially and we cannot train as a team. 
My greatest prayer is that our administration and welfare should improve so that our players produce positive results.

On August 15, 2024, the Dr RW Mazodze Family Trust terminated its sponsorship of FC Wangu Mazodze City, citing the club’s non-compliance with reporting requirements and failure to meet established targets.
A statement released by the family trust at the time reads:

After a thorough review of the current season, the Dr RW Mazodze Family Trust has decided to withdraw its sponsorship from FC Wangu Mazodze City due to non-compliance with reporting requirements and failure to meet set targets.
The Trust never owned the club but rather sponsored it out of passion for football at the request of a family member.
The Trust will now focus on its own team, FC Wangu Mazodze, which leads the Eastern Region Soccer League.
We wish FC Wangu Mazodze City well in their future endeavours and appreciate the time spent together.

Meanwhile, Mazodze, who has announced his intention to run for the ZIFA presidency, surprised the local football community on Friday by appointing his 8-year-old son, Richardell, as the club’s new Assistant Team Manager.
FC Wangu Mazodze is on the verge of earning promotion to the Premier Soccer League (PSL), currently leading the Eastern Region Division One league standings.

The team is struggling financially because their sponsor, Richard Wangu Mazodze, stopped supporting them. The coach said they can't train properly and their administration is bad. Another team owned by Mazodze, FC Wangu Mazodze, is doing well in a different league. The club’s sponsor’s family trust stopped supporting them too. Now, Mazodze's son is the club’s new Assistant Team Manager. They were close to moving up to the Premier Soccer League.

Masvingo-based Eastern Region Soccer League log leaders, FC Wangu Mazodze, have appointed 8-year-old Richardell Mazodze as Assistant Team Manager.
The club, affectionately known as Zhalala Zhululu by its supporters, announced the appointment in a statement released on Friday, 27 September. The club said:

FC Wangu Mazodze is sponsored by the Richard Wangu Mazodze Family Trust. On August 15, the Trust terminated its sponsorship deal with Central Region Soccer League club FC Wangu Mazodze City, citing the club’s non-compliance with reporting requirements and failure to meet set targets.
Mazodze, a United States-based businessman, recently expressed his desire to contest for the ZIFA Presidential post in the next election. In one of his “campaign” videos, he said:

I’m availing myself as an alternative. I strongly feel that there is a certain leadership approach that has not been explored in our local football.
In my quest to serve my country as the ZIFA president, it is my humble opinion that it shall be an opportunity for me to display my patriotism, my commitment and equally so, have an opportunity to give back to my country of birth.
We are trying to bring a new approach to the running of the institute of football. ZIFA is one of the richest and most modern institute in Zimbabwe.
I believe that we can’t continue doing the same thing and expecting different results, a change must be made.
