The government is set to deploy ambulances along major highways and establish dedicated wards in hospitals and clinics specifically for accident victims this festive season.
The ambulances will be stationed at key tollgates across the country to ensure that every individual involved in a road accident receives immediate medical attention, increasing their chances of survival and recovery.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/ambulances-dedicated-wards-for-accident-victims/">The Herald</a>, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona said that the goal is to ensure that victims are transported to a nearby hospital within the “golden hour”—the crucial first hour after an accident when timely medical intervention can save lives.
Two departments, the Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (ZINARA), and the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) will play a key role in this strategy to save lives.
Mhona also revealed that the Government plans to establish a Road Accident Fund that will facilitate prompt rehabilitation and compensation for injured people and also offer personal insurance to victims and their families. He said:

This fund will alleviate the financial strain on victims and their families during their most challenging times. 
It will cover medical expenses, bereavement costs, and educational fees for dependants left behind after losing a breadwinner.
This initiative represents a monumental step forward in our commitment to support those affected by road accidents.

Mhona said through the Road Accident Fund, the Government will provide compulsory coverage for all road users in Zimbabwe, addressing injuries and fatalities resulting from motor vehicle accidents. He added:

I will soon present the Cabinet principles related to this fund, which will provide both indemnity insurance for those at fault and personal injury and death insurance for victims and their families.
This initiative is more than just a response to a crisis; it is a promise to the people of Zimbabwe that their safety and well-being are paramount.
Together, we can create a safer future on our roads and ensure that no one faces the aftermath of a road accident alone.

Over 130 deaths were recorded in road traffic accidents during the festive season in Zimbabwe, as reported by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP). The period covered was from 15th December 2023 to 8th January 2024. In a statement seen by Pindula News, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the police national spokesperson, stated that although the number of deaths decreased compared to the previous year’s festive season (15th December 2022 to 8th January 2023), there was an increase in the number of injuries this time around.
Accident statistics for 15 Dec 2023 – 08 Jan 2024 are as follows:

<li>Number of people killed 138</li>

The ZRP emphasised the importance of cautious driving, particularly when facing flooded rivers and bridges to prevent drowning incidents. The public was advised to report any instances of reckless driving to the nearest police station or through the provided contact numbers. The police assured that they would continue enforcing road rules and regulations without bias.
The final statistics for the 2023-2024 festive season accidents will be released on 16th January 2024.

Police Say Over 130 People Died In Festive Season Accidents

The Passenger Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) has urged the Government to protect travellers during holidays by enforcing regulated fare scales amid reports that some long-distance bus operators have doubled fares.
Zimbabwean public transporters are wont to hiking fares during the festive period thereby forcing people travelling to various destinations across the country, especially rural areas, to pay through the nose.
Reports suggest that there has been congestion at Mbare Bus Terminus in Harare since the 22nd of December as travellers seek transport to rural areas.
Investigations by <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200021391/transport-operators-fleece-travelling-public">NewsDay</a> established that both long-distance buses and local commuter omnibuses have hiked fares with a Harare-Mutare trip which usually costs US$10 now at US$20.
Those travelling from Harare to Bulawayo were also affected, with their bus fares having been increased from US$15 to between US$20 and US$30.
The trend was also observed for major routes across the country as bus operators took advantage of an increase in the number of travellers.
A bus driver plying the Harare-Masvingo route Clifford Dhlakama defended the fare hikes. He told NewsDay:

Fuel prices have gone up again. We need to cover our costs; especially with the extra trips we’re running to meet the holiday demand.
Maintenance costs are also high. Spare parts are expensive, and with more passengers crammed, the wear and tear is even worse.

However, PAZ president Tafadzwa Goliati said transport operators were taking advantage of desperate passengers who want to unite with families during holidays. Said Goliati:

These claims of increased costs are often exaggerated. Operators take advantage of the festive season rush to maximise profits at the expense of ordinary Zimbabweans who just want to be with their families.
Commuters are not ATMs [Automated Teller Machines]. They shouldn’t be penalised for wanting to travel during the holidays.

Bus fare hikes during holidays in Zimbabwe, especially Christmas and New Year, are almost inevitable and expected.
This, however, does not necessarily result in reduced travel but makes it difficult for people to pay for recurring expenses in the new year as a huge chunk of their earnings is gobbled up by transport costs.

Passengers' Association Makes Plea For Price Controls As Buses Hike Fares For Christmas Travel

Police in Bulawayo Metropolitan Province have advised residents to register their houses with them if they intend to travel during this festive period so that the police can constantly monitor the properties to reduce cases of housebreaking during their absence, reported <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/register-properties-if-intending-to-travel-police/">The Sunday News</a>.
Speaking at a Press conference on Thursday, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Bulawayo Province Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said residents can register their houses with the police for free. She said:

During the festive season many people will be travelling for holidays leaving their homes without anyone to look after or monitor them, we thus encourage the residents to come forward to the police station and register their houses to be guarded by the police during their absence.
The police will be patrolling at the location with the registered houses checking if there are no signs of a break-in.
The registration and patrolling are free and the residents need to register to curb incidents of theft while they are on vacation.
</blockquote>
Assistant Insp Msebele also advised those leaving their homes for the holidays to avoid announcing that they will be away on social media platforms as criminals can view the posts and take advantage of their absence. She said:
<blockquote>
Criminals can follow our lives on social media, let us desist from posting our whereabouts and as we go for the holidays, let’s alert our neighbours so that they are aware of our whereabouts and also look out for our homes on our behalf.
</blockquote>
However, the offer by the Police may find few takers as some citizens do not trust police officers, not because they are incompetent but because some of them have been involved in criminal activities.
In recent years, serving security officers have been arrested for violent crimes such as armed robbery and burglary.
For instance, Detective Constable Sinikiwe Ndlovu, a female police officer from the CID Stores in Bulawayo was arrested for her alleged involvement in a Nedbank heist.
The burglars broke into a Nedbank branch in Bulawayo, stealing more than US$270 000 and R2 million.
Ndlovu is suspected of assisting the thieves by providing guidance and communication during the crime.
She allegedly received a Honda Fit vehicle as a reward for her involvement. 
Ndlovu was charged with defeating and obstructing the course of justice.

Police Advise Residents To Register Properties If Intending To Travel

Prices of commodities in Zimbabwe have surged during the festive season, adding to the burden faced by citizens already struggling to make ends meet. Basic goods such as mealie-meal, sugar, cooking oil, rice, and soap have experienced significant price hikes, even when sold in United States dollars. Retailers have increased the cost of a 2-litre bottle of cooking oil from US$3 to US$4.50, while a 2kg pack of rice now costs US$3.50, up from US$2 according to a snap survey conducted by <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200020952/prices-go-haywire-during-festive-season">NewsDay.</a> Other items such as Mazoe Crush fruit drink and washing soap have also seen price increases. In addition to this, some schools have announced plans to raise fees by up to 100% in the coming year.
The government has stated that it will not impose price controls but instead engage in dialogue with businesses to understand the reasons behind these price hikes. Industry and Commerce Minister Sithembiso Nyoni clarified that the government’s role is not to control prices but to investigate the factors leading to these increases. She told NewsDay:

Government does not tame prices.
What we do is we discuss with the business and try to understand why they are hiking prices.
So, I will set up an office to look into that and then we will take the necessary dialogue steps to look into that.

Retailers, however, have warned that further price hikes may be on the horizon.
Price increases during the festive season are not unique to Zimbabwe. In many countries, including Zimbabwe, shop owners often take advantage of the increased shopping activity during this time to maximize their profits. The demand for goods and services tends to rise as people purchase items to celebrate and spend time with their families and friends.
However, what makes the current situation in Zimbabwe particularly challenging is the fact that these price increases are happening at a time when the majority of the population is already facing financial difficulties. The struggling economy, stagnant wages, and high unemployment rates have created a situation where many people are finding it increasingly difficult to make ends meet. The additional burden of inflated prices for essential commodities further exacerbates their financial strain.

Prices Of Commodities In Zimbabwe Have Surged During The Festive Season - Survey

Statement by the Minister of Industry and Commerce Sithembiso Nyoni after her meeting with business member organisations (BMOs) to discuss basic commodities prices and the market supply situation during the upcoming festive season: 15 December 2023.
<blockquote>
1. I have just concluded a meeting with the relevant Business Member Organizations (BMOs) to discuss the prices and market supply situation of basic commodities, ahead of the upcoming festive season.
2. As we all know, traditionally the holiday season is a period with hyper activities where businesses world over stock up with various goods, in anticipation of increased spending as consumers buy various gifts for their loved ones.
3. In attendance at the meeting were:
<ul>
<li>The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe;</li>
<li>The National Bakers Association;</li>
<li>The Oil Expressors Association of Zimbabwe;</li>
<li>The Zimbabwe Retailers Association;</li>
<li>The Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers;</li>
<li>Zimbabwe Sugar Sales; and</li>
<li>The Zimbabwe Sugar Association.</li>
</ul>
4. As a Ministry, we had observed an emerging trend, of increases in the prices of basic commodities during this week, wherein laundry soap has gone up 16%; cooking oil by 13%; bread by 12%; and mealie-meal by 9%. It was pleasing to note that the price of sugar has remained constant.
5. As the ministry responsible for commerce and Industry, we have the onus to get to the bottom of this and nip any negative developments in the bud. We have witnessed and enjoyed price stability for a very long time now, ever since the Treasury and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe instituted a tight Monetary Control Regime and this must be maintained, to promote consumer welfare.
6. By the same token, we also witnessed and enjoyed a normal supply of basic commodities on the market, with no shortages and crises, as previously happened in yesteryear. We are grateful to the business players that have joined hands with the ministry to ensure that we do not allow any price increases, particularly at this point, when families will be celebrating Christmas and the New Year, indeed a time when basic commodities should be not be found wanting on the market!
7. We also agreed that the business community should trade fairly and desist from profiteering and from creating artificial shortages.
8. I am very happy to report that I had a very fruitful dialogue with the BMOs’, to whom I am grateful for their quick response. Ever since I took office as Minister of Industry and Commerce, I have enjoyed a very good and progressive working relationship with the respective BMOs in both the industry and commerce sectors.
9. Let me assure the nation that industry has enough stocks of basic commodities and that business will immediately work on modalities to ensure that there will not be any sharp price increases.
Let me take this opportunity to wish the nation of Zimbabwe a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous 2024.

Industry And Commerce Minister Meets Business Member Organisations

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the Vehicle Inspectorate Department (VID) and the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) have launched an operation to “stop and search” vehicles on major highways during the festive season.
Speaking at the festive season road safety awareness campaign launch in Harare, ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said they want to minimise road traffic accidents. <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200020958/police-vid-tscz-launch-traffic-blitz">NewsDay</a> quoted Nyathi as saying:
<blockquote>
I want to reiterate, that we will take action. It is not about just driving. It is being safety conscious and responsible on the country’s roads.
We need our drivers to change their attitudes and realise that they play a key role in terms of the safety of Zimbabweans and visitors during the festive period.
</blockquote>
Transport and Infrastructural Development Deputy Minister Joshua Sacco urged the VID to enforce “all aspects of vehicle fitness, with particular emphasis on public transport”. Added Sacco:
<blockquote>
Law enforcers must do their work without fear or favour, and I expect that the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) will provide adequate resources to create a conducive environment for the festive season road safety awareness campaign.
It is for this reason that, within the context of the whole government approach the key players in road safety including, but not limited to the TSCZ, ZRP and VID, among others, will effective this weekend, deploy throughout the country and roll out a festive season road safety education and awareness campaign across all 10 provinces of the country.

Zimbabwe usually records an increase in road accidents during the festive period due to an increase in travel and traffic coupled with poorly maintained roads and rainy weather which reduces visibility.
Moreover, the celebration and merriment associated with Christmas may lead to irresponsible driving behaviours, such as speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Law enforcement agents have been accused of taking bribes from drivers of overloaded or unroadworthy vehicles resulting in accidents.

Police, VID And Traffic Safety Council Launch Traffic Blitz

Some shops have hiked prices on basic grocery items, making the festive season increasingly gloomy for most citizens already struggling to make ends meet.
According to a survey conducted by <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200020952/prices-go-haywire-during-festive-season">NewsDay</a>, shops have increased the prices of mealie-meal, sugar, cooking oil, rice and sugar, among others, even in United States dollars.
In some retail shops, a 2-litre bottle of cooking oil, which was selling at US$3, now costs US$4.50, while the price of a 2kg pack of rice rose to US$3.50 from US$2.
The price of a 2-litre bottle of Mazoe Crush rose to US$4,50 from $3, while a bar of washing soap now costs US$1.50 from US$1.
However, the Minister of Industry and Commerce Sithembiso Nyoni told NewsDay on Thursday that the Government will not impose price controls, but engage business over the price increases. She said:

Government does not tame prices. What we do is we discuss with the business and try to understand why they are hiking prices.
So, I will set up an office to look into that and then we will take the necessary dialogue steps to look into that.

Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers (CZR) president Denford Mutashu warned of further price hikes.
He blamed the price increases on proposals to increase taxes by Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister Mthuli Ncube in the 2024 budget. Said Mutashu:

There is a huge expectation of more price hikes before year-end and this has been triggered by the barrage of taxes on basic commodities contained in the 2024 budget.
The proposal to increase VAT [value-added tax] on basic commodities shocked the market because, since 1980, we have not had a hike on VAT on basic commodities.
The 1% wealth tax proposal has also resulted in property owners raising their rental fees.
So, business owners who rent property will increase the prices of the services and commodities.
</blockquote>
He said the daily power cuts have increased the cost of running business as businesses are forced to rely on generators as alternative power sources. Mutashu said:
<blockquote>
Big businesses are running on generators as a power source and it is not sustainable. It is not cost-effective, so all these cost drivers have piled pressure.
If there is no reversal of VAT on basic commodities and VAT on school fees, it is going to be a disaster because already schools have increased fees to cushion themselves from the VAT proposal.
</blockquote>
Some schools have reportedly announced intentions to increase fees by up to 100% next term.

Shops Hike Prices Ahead Of Christmas, Blame Mthuli Ncube's Tax Proposals

Musician Alick Macheso has urged people to act responsibly during the festive period and avoid the over-consumption of alcohol which may result in the unnecessary loss of life.
The 55-year-old humanitarian ambassador was quoted by <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/alcohol-will-be-there-after-you-warns-macheso/">H-Metro</a> as saying imbibers should remember that beer will be there long after they are dead. He said:

Firstly, I would like to warn people that December comes every year and we don’t need to lose lives.
People should know their limits and stop behaving like beer is a new thing.
Beer will always be there and what is important for drinkers is to be responsible and save lives.
Unfortunately, some people party to extremes, which has ended in tears most of the time.
It’s always advisable to stay away from the wheel when drunk. We can’t continue losing lives during this period when we are supposed to be enjoying ourselves with our loved ones.
</blockquote>
Macheso also advised parents and guardians to enjoy the end-of-year festivities with the future of their kids in mind. He said:
<blockquote>
We should always understand that there is life after the festive season.
School fees need to be paid once schools open and we should not be found wanting.
It’s sad to see kids being sent back home when their parents were busy overspending during the festive season.
We should always prioritise the future of our kids. It should not be affected by our habits.
We should not squander what we worked for.
Peer pressure should be avoided at all costs to ensure that we won’t regret our actions.

Beer Will Always Be There After You Die, Macheso Calls For Moderation During Festive Season

STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER OF TRANSPORT AND INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT, HONOURABLE F. T. MHONA (MP) URGING MOTORISTS AND ALL ROAD USERS TO EXERCISE CAUTION DURING THE YEAR 2023/2024 FESTIVE SEASON
Fellow Citizens,
The festive season is upon us! Unity Day is on Friday, 22 December 2023, Christmas falls on Monday, 25 December 2023 and New Year is on Monday, 1 January 2024.
I wish to thank all Zimbabweans and visitors to our country during the year 2023 for heeding our call to observe rules and regulations on our roads throughout the year. However, the year 2023 was not without unfortunate incidences on our roads.
Let me express our deep-seated condolences to the families of the deceased and those who got injured in road accidents during the year 2023.
While we have taken time as a Government to commiserate with the families of the deceased and those who got injured during the year, we continue to embolden the deceased families to remain strong during the difficult period of grief.
We however need to take stock of what happened in the year 2023 and avoid a replica of such unpleasant statistics in 2024.
The festive season is characterised by high levels of mobility. Our beloved compatriots from the neighbouring countries will be traversing the motherland, in and out of our borders.
The season is also associated with excessive excitement, as we celebrate the gift of life. Road traffic densities increase at a time when the rainy season is at its peak.
It is during this period that we witness an increase in road traffic deaths and injuries that are way above average.
This is so because of increased vehicular and pedestrian traffic. All these factors increase incidences of fatalities on our roads.
As we travel on our roads, let us avoid the following transgressions among others:
Overspeeding: remember that speed thrills but it klis; Overloading: Disregarding Road signs; multi-tasking, such as drinking or chatting on the cellphone whilst driving; and Driving under the influence of alcohol;
Driving vehicles with defects and worn-out tyres: Driving vehicles fitted with illegal additional headlights; Road rage, Attempting to go past flooded rivers and bridges even with an empty bus; Driving public service vehicles [Those with licenses to transport members of the public] without valid certificates of fitness and other requirements such as valid route authority in terms of the Road Motor Transportation Act [Chapter 13: 15] and prescriptions of the Road Traffic Act [Chapter 13:11]
My Ministry shall deploy multi-stakeholder teams comprising the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, ZRP and VID officials for a full-fledged awareness campaign on road safety.
Enforcement agencies are urged to arrest all transgressors of road traffic laws and refer them for prosecution without fear or favour.
May I remind all transporters who violate Traffic laws that relevant authorities will be ready to enforce the law and if need be, withdraw their operators’ licenses in terms of the law.
We are in the rainy season. Rains can reduce visibility, make our roads slippery and year in, and year out, we have heard of vehicles being swept away by flooded rivers.
We must not attempt to go through flooded rivers and bridges. Let us all take responsibility for our lives and those of others.
We have also observed worrisome behaviour on our roads where when rain commences, drivers start disregarding road rules.
In urban centres, for instance, transgressions such as additional lanes, road jams at intersections, disregarding traffic lights and driving towards on-coming traffic, and creating human-induced gridlocks, are rampant. Let us guard against such tendencies!
As you may be aware, the Government is implementing the ongoing Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme 2 in terms of 51 47 of 2021. A
s you drive, you will witness several detours along our roads including highways. Kindly drive carefully along the detours, as some may be slippery due to rain. Further, observe instructions by those waving flags.
My Ministry made legislative interventions, in the form of Statutory Instrument 118 of 2023, on Speed Limiting and Monitoring Devices Regulations.
I, therefore, call upon all stakeholders, the TSCZ, VID, RMT, Enforcement Agencies, Operators, Operators’ Associations and all relevant players to ensure successful implementation of the regulations and adherence to the timelines set therein.
I wish you all a Happy, accident-free Unity Day, Christmas Day and a Prosperous 2024.

Transport Minister Urges Caution On The Roads During Festive Season | Full Statement

Ninenty-two (92) people died in road accidents during the festive period, that is, from 15 December to 26 December 2022, police have revealed.
ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said that during the same period in 2021, 72 people died in road traffic accidents.
In 2021, police recorded 1 626 road traffic accidents, 62 fatal accidents, 72 deaths, and the number of people injured stood at 337.
In 2022, police recorded 1 285 road traffic accidents, 69 fatal accidents, 92 deaths and the number of people injured stood at 333. Added Asst Comm Nyathi:

On Unity Day, 22nd December 2022, a total of 107 road traffic accidents were recorded countrywide, and three (03) of the accidents were fatal, where three (03) people died while 27 others were injured. 
In 2021, 144 road traffic accidents were recorded, with seven (07) being fatal, killing 10 people while 26 others were injured.
On Christmas day, 25th December 2022, a total of 119 road traffic accidents were recorded countrywide, with 10 being fatal, killing 13 people and injuring 89, compared to 187 road traffic accidents recorded during the same period in 2021, with 10 fatal which killed 13 people and injured 35 others.
On Boxing Day, 26th December 2022, 88 road traffic accidents were recorded countrywide, 15 being fatal and 16 people were killed while 19 others were injured, compared to the year 2021 where 103 road traffic accidents were recorded, with five (5) being fatal, seven (07) people killed while 29 others injured.
Most of the road traffic accidents occurred on highways as a result of speeding, overtaking errors, inattention, misjudgment, following too close, and recklessness on the part of drivers, who in most of the accidents recorded were trying to overtake in situations which were not safe to do so, encroached onto the lane of oncoming traffic, straddled the centre lane, showed clear poor observation and control of the vehicles resulting in some hitting pedestrians who were walking on the side of the roads or standing at bus stops.
No major road accident involving public service vehicles has been recorded so far. However, the Police is concerned with the number of private vehicles involved in accidents during this holiday. 
Some of them will be overloaded while others are being used for purposes that are clearly not suitable for such use. 
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has so far impounded 2 159 vehicles for various defects.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges drivers to be cautious and promote road safety on the roads as the holiday continues. 
There is no need for one to be over-excited or reckless on the roads. The Police will continue with the current deployment level on the roads and communities till the 15th of January 2023.
We urge motorists to be responsible on the roads, to self-introspect and to be safety conscious.

ZRP Releases 2022 Festive Season Accident Statistics

The Commissioner General of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Godwin_Matanga">Godwin Matanga</a>, has warned motorists against speeding to avoid loss of life during the festive season. In a statement seen by Pindula News, Matanga police officers will be on the roads enforcing the law. Reads the statement:

<h2>ZRP PRESS STATEMENT 16th DECEMBER 2022 COMMISSIONER GENERAL OF POLICE’S 2022 FESTIVE SEASON STATEMENT ON ZIMBABWE REPUBLIC POLICE STATE OF PREPAREDNESS FOR THE SECURITY AND SAFETY OF ZIMBABWEANS</h2>
The Zimbabwe Republic Police takes note that the forthcoming Unity Day, Christmas and New Year holidays are characterized by an increase in human and vehicular traffic movements as the public undertake various social and economic activities in a festive mood.
My office has observed that this period attracts a lot of attention as fatal and serious road traffic accidents are recorded on the country’s roads. Criminal acts are likely to increase as evidenced by recorded cases of armed robbery, murder, rape, drug abuse, stocktheft and unlawful entry and theft.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police will therefore deploy adequately to ensure police officers are visible so that peace prevails in communities, on the roads, public gatherings and any other place where the public has access. Stern action will be taken against pirate taxis (mushikashika operators) and motorists who drive recklessly with no regards for the rights of other road users.
I have directed Officers Commanding Police Provinces to ensure that sufficient visibility is maintained in communities and on the country’s major roads.
Police officers will also account for criminal elements who commit armed robberies, murder, rape, stocktheft and those who engage in illicit drug activities which are affecting the youths and elderly. 
May I implore the public not to keep large sums of money at home or business premises as this attracts criminals.
Above all, the public should not relax during the festive period but remain alert in terms of family security and their property. Suspicious criminal movements should be quickly reported to the police for swift action to be taken.
Companies should ensure that their security is beefed up with those entities conducting cash-in-transit activities urged to work closely with the Zimbabwe Republic Police to curb armed robbery cases.
Parents and guardians should monitor the activities undertaken by children this holiday to curb cases of child sexual abuse, drowning and drug abuse.
Police officers will conduct crime and road safety campaigns in partnership with other stakeholders who include Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ), Vehicle Examination Department (VED) and Zimbabwe National Road Authority (ZINARA).
The public is also urged to shun and report corrupt activities to any nearest Police station. Above all, they should cooperate with police officers deployed on patrols, road blocks and other duties to ensure that law and order is maintained during the holidays.
May I urge all drivers to be exemplary on the roads and promote road safety at all times. All unroadworth and plateless vehicles will be impounded by the police. 
Drivers should not speed or overload vehicles with passengers or goods. The mixing of goods and passengers will not be tolerated by the Police during this holiday as this contributes to road traffic accidents.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police will arrest all touts and unruly elements causing chaos at bus termini and ranks. No one should be forced to board a public service vehicle by anyone through force or threats. May I implore the travelling public to report any one who harasses them while trying to board public service vehicles en-route to various destinations.
At Beitbridge Border Post, the Zimbabwe Republic Police has arrested 863 touts popularly known as “cobras,” from Or October 2022 to date. They have since appeared in court.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police takes this opportunity to urge the various commuter omnibus operator associations to lead by example and promote road safety during this festive season. The operators must employ drivers who are above the age of 25 years as stipulated by the law and observe speed limits at all times.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police will be conducting an operation dubbed, “Lets Join Hands in Preventing Crime and Road Carnage,” which runs from 15th December 2022 to 15th January 2023 to ensure that all criminal activities in communities and reckless driving conduct on the roads are decisively dealt with.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police wishes to express gratitude to the generality of Zimbabweans who are law abiding and urge them to continue observing the law and working with the Police to fight crime.

Police Commissioner Matanga Warns Motorists Against Speeding During Festive Season

Police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga has said officers will be heavily deployed on major highways, residential areas, industrial and Central Business Districts and conduct increased foot and motorised patrols on all major and feeder roads during the festive period.
In a statement on Monday, Comm-Gen Matanga warned that police will clamp down on errant drivers, murderers, rapists and those who engage in stock theft and unlawful entry. He said:
<blockquote>… It is sad to note that most road traffic accidents during the festive season are caused by speeding, drunken driving, misjudgment, overtaking errors, failure to observe traffic rules and regulations and mechanical faults.

Comm-Gen Matanga advised motorists to ensure that vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on journeys.
He also warned motorists that all defective vehicles and those not displaying number plates would be accounted for by police officers.

More Cops On The Streets During The Festive Season

The festive season is now upon us, the Zimbabwe Republic Police makes a passionate appeal to members of the public to observe the country’s laws as they conduct various activities during the period.
Firstly, we implore motorists to observe all traffic laws and regulations as they travel to different destinations.
Motorists are urged to plan their journeys and avoid travelling during the night. We also entreat public service operators to avoid over-burdening drivers by carrying out extra trips as fatigue will catch up with them leading to accidents.
Overloading and speeding are serious offences in terms of the law hence we implore drivers and operators to be exemplary by being responsible on the roads.
Drivers should avoid driving whilst drunk or driving under the influence of alcohol as this often leads to accidents.
Drivers should check the road-worthiness of their vehicles before embarking on journeys. Police will not hesitate to impound all defective and unroadworthy vehicles besides arresting all those who flout the rules of the road.
On the other hand, cases of unlawful entry and theft are likely to be on the increase during this period.
We urge members of the public to put in place measures to ensure that their homes and property are secured. If travelling, at least a trusted person should be left at home and the Police can be advised to put the house under supervision where possible.
Keeping of large sums of cash and other attractive items at home is discouraged as robbers may pounce on unsuspecting individuals.
As we are now in the rainy season, we discourage drivers from attempting to cross flooded rivers as they risk being swept away by heavy water tides.
Cases of drowning normally characterize this period hence parents and guardians should also monitor their children whenever they play near water bodies to avoid the imminent danger of drowning.
Even travelling whilst it raining is discouraged as lightning can strike at any time. The Zimbabwe Republic Police will deploy officers to enable a conducive environment before, during and after this period hence any suspicious activities should be reported promptly to the nearest Police Station or police officer on sight.

Police Statement On The 2019 Festive Period {Full Text}

The govt of Zimbabwe has promised to avail affordable transport during the festive season as local private transporters tend to hike fares during that season, the Chronicle reports.
This was revealed by the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_United_Passenger%E2%80%99s_Company_bribery_scandal">Zupco</a> CEO Mr Everisto Madangwa in a telephone interview with the publication. Madangwa said:
<blockquote>At the moment we have 516 buses and 410 <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Kombi">kombis</a> under the scheme countrywide. We are working on reaching our 1000 kombi target and so far the progress made shows that we are heading there. We aim to provide an uninterrupted commuter service during the festive season and affordable transport at a time when operators tend to hike fares drastically, prejudicing the travelling public.
We are working on modalities to introduce a pre-booking system for intercity routes for the convenience of travellers so that we decongest the system of acquiring tickets prior to boarding</blockquote>
The government in February introduced the subsidised transports scheme to help the public first in urban areas then later on to the rural areas.

Govt Promises Affordable Transportation During Festive Season

The government recently announced that there will be a huge police presence on the country’s roads during the festive season. This follows a spate of deadly road accidents which have claimed scores of lives in the past couple of weeks.
The Minister for Roads and Infrastructural Development Joel Biggie Matiza said that the Vehicle Inspectorate Department (VID) will target defective vehicles. Matiza had this to say
<blockquote>I would like, in particular, to appeal to operators of public service vehicles as well as private motorists, not to use defective and unroadworthy vehicles.
In this respect, I want to advise would-be-offenders that (the) Zimbabwe Republic Police and (the) Vehicle Inspectorate Department will be on the lookout for defective vehicles throughout the holiday period.</blockquote>
