Zimbabwe’s gold deliveries fell by 22 per cent in February to 1.85 tonnes compared to the 2.38 tonnes delivered in January mainly due to reduced output from small-scale producers.
The small-scale miners normally account for about 60 per cent of the country’s total gold output.
Large-scale producers delivered more to Fidelity Gold Refinery (FGR) last month compared to their small-scale counterparts.
According to FGR, large-scale producers delivered 988.7kg, which translates to 53 per cent of the total for the month under review.
The small miners accounted for the balance of 47 per cent of the yellow metal output at 864.3 kg, representing a 31.76 per cent decline from 1266.51 kg in January.
Mines and Mining Development Permanent Secretary, Pfungwa Kunaka told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/gold-deliveries-to-fidelity-refinery-decline-22pc/">The Herald</a> that said the shift in the FGR payment modalities for gold miners, who were no longer receiving 100 per cent USD, resulted in the shift by some producers to lithium, which negatively impacted gold production. Kunaka said:

The shift in FGR payment conditions deterred deliveries, in about three weeks we noticed significant declines in deliveries, but that is now sorted.
We have also witnessed a trend where small-scale miners are rushing to lithium mining, given that it is easier to extract, but the slump in lithium prices has seen them return to gold mining.

Young Miners Foundation (YMF) chief executive officer, Payne Kupfuwa, said:
<blockquote>
As you know Fidelity used to pay gold deliveries 100 per cent in United States Dollars, but they (FGR) had reverted to paying 75 per cent USD and the remaining in local currency, this could have affected gold deliveries in February.
The situation has since been corrected and miners are now receiving their 100 per cent payment in US dollars.
</blockquote>
Gold is Zimbabwe’s single largest export by value, followed by platinum, together they account for over half of the country’s export revenue.

Gold Deliveries To Fidelity Refinery Decline 22%

Gold production in Zimbabwe dropped by 26% to 3.79 tonnes in the first two months of this year from the 5.129 tonnes reported in the preceding comparative period.
The significant drop in gold output has been blamed on heavy rains received in most parts of the country.
Fidelity Gold Refiners (FGR) general manager, Peter Magaramombe, told <a href="https://businesstimes.co.zw/rains-wash-away-gold-output/">Business Times</a> that it was imperative to pump out water from mines to boost gold production. He said:

Our gold deliveries have gone down significantly as the artisanal and small-scale producers were significantly affected by the rains from mid-December 2022 to date.
(Gold miners) are failing to mine due to high water levels.
There are fears of possible mine collapse accidents hence production fell significantly.
</blockquote>
Magaramombe said large-scale producers delivered 1.69 tonnes to FGR in January and February 2023. Small-scale miners delivered 2.099 tonnes during the same period.
As a result, gold export receipts fell 24% to US$228.73 million during the first two months of this year from US$302.5 million earned in the previous comparative period.

Zimbabwe's Gold Output Drops 26% Due To Heavy Rains

State-owned gold buyer, Fidelity Gold Refinery (FGR), has projected gold deliveries to reach 40 tonnes in 2023 mainly due to new gold mining projects coming into production.
FGR general manager Peter Magaramombe told the <a href="https://www.theindependent.co.zw/local-news/article/200006940/gold-deliveries-to-hit-40t">Independent</a> that the company received 35 tonnes of gold in 2022, an increase of 18.9% from the same period in 2021. He said:
<blockquote>
We have projected the gold deliveries in 2023 to reach 40 000 kg, an increase of 4 700 kg or 13.4% on 2022 gold deliveries.
</blockquote>
Magaramombe said additional gold buying centres will be opened in active regions. He added:
<blockquote>
FGR will continue to provide a competitive pricing framework benchmarked to the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) prices at a discount of 5%.
</blockquote>
He also said the FGR will continue to offer United States dollar (USD) spot cash payments for gold lodgements.
This will be done to ensure that small-scale gold producers are not financially constrained.
Magaramombe said in 2021, gold miners delivered 29 664kg, increasing the deliveries in 2022 by 5 616kg with a total of 35 280kg delivered during the year. He said:

The highest gold receipts were experienced during the third quarter of 2022 (9 680kg) and the fourth quarter (9 618kg).
This and the general surge in gold receipts could be attributed to several factors.
The accessibility of working areas (shafts) by small-scale miners as the water table lowers during the third and fourth quarters.
The incidence of maturing projects for large-scale mines having the effect of new additional gold receipts by FGR.

Gold Deliveries Projected To Reach 40 Tonnes In 2023

Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) Governor John Mangudya has said gold deliveries to Fidelity Gold Refinery (Private) Limited rose by 55.5% in 2021 compared to deliveries made in 2020.
In a statement this Wednesday, Mangudya hailed both small-scale and large scale producers, as well as the Government for the Gold Incentive Scheme for the development. Said Mangudya:

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe wishes to express its appreciation and gratitude to the country’s small and large gold producers for having delivered a total of 29 629.61 kg of gold to Fidelity Gold Refinery (Private) Limited (FGR) in 2021, a 55.5% increase from the 19 052.65 kg delivered in 2020.
Large gold producers delivered 11 159.0 kg to FGR in 2021 whilst small-scale producers contributed 18 470.61 kg.
The Bank also commends the Government for the Gold Incentive Scheme introduced in May 2021, which scheme has had a significant positive impact on gold deliveries to FGR.
It is projected that the quantum of the country’s gold exports in 2021 will increase beyond the 29 629.61 kg when the gold component in the Platinum Group Metals is eventually included in the tally of gold deliveries to FGR.
