Fidelity Printers and Refiners has reported a 21% increase in gold deliveries, with 2.9 tonnes delivered in May 2023, compared to April. 
Fidelity Printers and Refiners General Manager, Mr Peter Magaramombe said the rise in gold output has been attributed to improved conditions in mines following the rainy season. Magaramombe said:

Deliveries rose 21 percent to 2,9 tonnes compared to April and we expect this trend to continue. As you may recall that the small-scale miners are the largest providers of gold as shown by previous statistics, their operations are mainly affected by the rains. It is a boom for them when the rains subside as they recover that is why you see the recovery.
</blockquote>
According to <a href="https://zbcnews.co.zw/2023/06/08/gold-output-surges/">ZBC News</a>, the government’s prompt payments for deliveries have also contributed to the recovery of output.
Zimbabwe Miners Federation President, Ms. Henrietta Rushwaya, is optimistic about increased output and delivery of gold to the Fidelity Gold Refinery. She said hundreds of thousands of small-scale miners are now the biggest contributors to national gold output, with their involvement in mining driving rural industrialization.
Gold is a key revenue generator and contributor to the country’s economic growth. However, there have been concerns about gold leakages in Zimbabwe, with smuggling and illegal trading depriving the government of much-needed revenue. Early this year, Al Jazeera published the Gold Mafia, an investigation into illicit gold trade and money laundering alleging powerful individuals were involved.
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Tendai_Biti/">Tendai Biti</a>, a former Finance Minister, claims that Zimbabwe is losing approximately US$1 billion annually due to gold leakages. 
Zimbabwe’s abundant mineral deposits have not translated into economic development due to corruption and mismanagement by political elites, analysts say. The lack of transparency in resource management has enabled powerful individuals to exploit resources for personal gain, rather than the good of the country.

Fidelity Printers and Refiners: Gold Deliveries Increased By 21% In May

Armed robbers intercepted three security vehicles transporting gold from How Mine on Tuesday 04 October 2022, about 10 kilometres from the mine, and got away with 11 kgs of gold, <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/armed-robbers-hit-three-how-mine-cit-vehicles-escape-with-us450-000-worth-of-gold/">The Sunday News</a> reported. 
How Mine is located in Matebeleland-South province, about 30 kilometres southeast of Bulawayo in southern Zimbabwe.
Sources said there was a gunfight involving security officers from a cash-in-transit truck and the suspects whose vehicles were left riddled with bullet holes.
Eyewitnesses told the Sunday News that the armed robbers were using three vehicles, a Toyota GD 6, a Nissan March and Nissan Hard boy single cab. 
It is alleged, How Mine’s internal security manager (name withheld) was following the three cash-in-transit (CIT) vehicles using a Toyota Fortuner from a distance when the ambush took place. 
The security manager then pursued the three armed robbers’ vehicles. 
A shootout ensued and he managed to shoot the Nissan Hardbody which they then dumped while firing at the security manager. 
The manager then pursued the other two vehicles (Toyota GD6 and Nissan March) until Ekusileni Hospital (Hillside) towards the Bulawayo city centre, where the armed robbers managed to escape.

A revolver gun was recovered from the Nissan Hardbody which was abandoned.
Officials at the mine sent out a distress call warning nearby communities to be on the lookout for the two getaway vehicles.
The gold which was destined for Fidelity Printers is worth about US$581 555 on international markets as of Tuesday 04 October 2022.

Robbers Intercept How Mine Vehicles, Get Away With 11kg Of Gold

Fidelity Printers and Refiners (FPR) has this year disbursed at least $1,7 billion from the Gold Development Initiative Fund (GDIF) meant to assist miners to improve production.
This was said by FPR acting General Manager Mr Peter Magaramombe during a tour to assess the company’s operations by the Portfolio Committee on Mines and Energy.
FPR is a subsidiary of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe and is the country’s sole buyer and refiner of gold.
The GDIF was established by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe to capacitate gold miners through the provision of mining finance.
Mr Magaramombe said the money had been disbursed as of October 31. 
 Zimbabwe is endowed with over 60 minerals including Diamonds, Gold, Lithium, Platinum, Coal, Chrome, Copper among others. In the table 
In October 2019, the Zimbabwean government tabled an ambitious policy document that aims to turn the mining sector in the country into a US$12 billion industry by 2023.
Efforts to realise the vision are reportedly being hamstrung by a myriad of challenges affecting the operations of miners especially the small scale miners. 
These challenges experienced over the recent past include electricity supply, shortages of foreign currency, a general rise in the cost of inputs, shortage of capital, international market movements, perceived lack of recognition and consultation and lack of mechanised equipment.

Fidelity Printers Has Disbursed $1.7 Billion To Assist Miners

Gold deliveries to Fidelity Printers and Refineries (FPR) improved by 54.57% in March 2021 to 1.8 tonnes from February’s 1.17t as weather conditions improved. 
Mining activities across the country were affected by wet weather conditions that saw mining operations suspended after a number of mines collapsed killing miners.
It has also been argued that miners were <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/10/16/zimbabwes-gold-deliverirs-decline-by-73/">not delivering gold to FPR due to late payment and unattractive prices.</a>
According to Bloomberg Business, gold worth a staggering $1.5 billion is being smuggled out of the country every year.
Despite the rise in gold deliveries in March, cumulative deliveries for the quarter saw a 30.48% decline to 3.98t from the 5.72t achieved in the 2020 first quarter.
Gold is one of the major foreign currency earners for Zimbabwe, therefore, a decline is a cause for concern for the Southern African country.
Zimbabwe also gets foreign currency from diamond, platinum and agricultural products such as tobacco.
The tobacco selling season recently commenced with stakeholders expecting that <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/04/08/farmers-jubilant-as-contract-tobacco-sales-hit-us6-20-kg/">this year’s produce to bring more forex because of its high-quality grade.</a>

Zimbabwe Gold Deliveries Increase In March

Small-scale gold producers have implored Government to end the monopoly of Fidelity Printers and Refiners as Zimbabwe’s sole authorised gold buyer to improve bullion deliveries from the sector.
Deliveries to Fidelity Printers and Refiners dropped by about 10 percent in the first quarter of 2019 to 6,5 tonnes from 7,7 tonnes in the same period last year.
Henrietta Rushwaya, Zimbabwe Artisanal, and Small-Scale Miners Association president told a Chamber of Mines conference in Victoria Falls on Thursday that small-scale gold miners were not happy with the 55 percent forex retention threshold they were getting from Fidelity Printers. She said:
<blockquote>The miners are still not happy with the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe retention threshold, especially the 55 percent (forex) and 45 percent RTGS at the interbank rate of the day.
And consequently, this has resulted in less deliveries at Fidelity Printers and Refiners and our recommendations as a sector are that the monopoly by Fidelity Printers needs to be reviewed and gold trading liberalised.</blockquote>
Miss Rushwaya said that poor payment by Fidelity Printers and Refineries could be triggering gold smuggling and leakages. She said:
<blockquote>At the end of the day the 100 tonnes we are craving for can be achieved before 2023 because 70 percent of gold could be getting leaked through illicit means due to poor payment by Fidelity Printers and Refiners.</blockquote>

Gold Deliveries To Fidelity Printers & Refiners Dropped By 10 % Due To Suspected Leakages & Smuggling.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development, Munesu Munodawafa has called on small-scale gold miners to deliver their product to Fidelity Printers and Refineries (FPR). Th secretary said that gold is a major foreign currency exporter and highlighted that if all miners sell their gold through formal channels the country would be transformed. Speaking at the Minex Indaba in Kwekwe recently, Munodawafa said,

Gold is the major foreign currency earner in Zimbabwe, contributing $977 million in 2017 which translates to 39% of total national exports. The gold sub-sector has great potential considering the amount of gold which is unaccounted for and goes into the illegal market. If all players in the subsector become responsible and patriotic citizens delivering all gold to Fidelity Printers and Refineries, I can assure you that this country will not remain the same.</blockquote>
