Argentina defeated France on penalties on Sunday 18 December 2022 to win the FIFA 2022 Qatar World Cup with Lionel Messi scoring a brace in that match.
It took penalties after an electric 3-3 draw, but Argentina won 4-2 in the shootout!
Messi and Di Maria scored the first-half goals for Argentina before Mbappe’s late brace took it to extra time.
Messi scored his second goal in extra time but Mbappe penned them back again, getting his hat trick from the spot.
In the shootout, Martinez made a huge save before Tchouameni missed. Argentina scored all of theirs, with Montiel scoring the winner.

Lionel Messi scored the first goal from the spot for Argentina in the 23rd minute before Ángel Di María doubled the lead in the 36th minute.
Kylian Mbappé pulled one for France from the spot in the 80th minute before equalising in the 81st minute.
Messi scored his second goal of the match in the 108th minute but Mbappe equalised fir the second time in the 118th minute.

Mbappe has become the second player to score a World Cup final hat-trick after Geoff Hurst for England v Germany in 1966. 
Argentina have won the World Cup for a third time (also 1978 and 1986).

Messi's Argentina Beat France To Lift The World Cup

Several France players have caught colds ahead of their World Cup final against Argentina on Sunday 18 December 2022.
Defenders Raphaël Varane and Ibrahima Konaté are said to be the latest to fall ill on Friday, France 24 reported citing the French Football Federation.
Varane, Konaté and striker Kingsley Coman were all sidelined as Les Bleus were preparing to take on Lionel Messi’s Argentina.
The development sparked further fears of a mystery virus in the French camp after two players – midfielder Adrien Rabiot and defender Dayot Upamecano – were ruled out of the semi-final win over Morocco.
Rabiot and Upamecano both returned to training on Friday. Manager Didier Deschamps refused to panic after Wednesday’s win and said they were being careful to ensure the illness did not spread. France 24’s Selina Sykes reported from Doha:

These are clearly not ideal circumstances, with so little time ahead of that big final against Argentina on Sunday. If there is a bit of a reassuring element to this so-called virus that is spreading within the French camp, it is that it only seems to last a few days.

France 24 sports journalist Romain Houeix said a lot of French journalists are in bad shape adding:

Should Konaté and Varane be out for the final, however, Deschamps would face a difficult selection decision, as he would be without two of his top three defenders.

Several France Players Sick Ahead Of Their World Cup Final Against Argentina

A serial entrant and winner of almost all competitions run by large retail outlets in Zimbabwe, has won a funded holiday trip to the ongoing World Cup 2022 in Qatar.
Clifton Mandla (38) of Mzari suburb in Chinhoyi, will fly out of Zimbabwe Monday.
He, together with Tafadzwa Manyonda of Chitungwiza, won the exclusive all-expenses paid trip to Qatar through a competition run by Cookmore and Raha, a vegetable oil brand manufactured in Harare.
Mandla, who originally hails from Simbe area, Gokwe South under Chief Njelele expressed delight at the once-in-a-lifetime chance to attend the World Cup tournament. Mandla told NewZimbabwe.com Sunday:

I am so delighted to be flying all the way to Qatar. This will be a memorable trip, which l am unfortunately going on my own. 
</blockquote>
Asked how he has managed the feat of scooping prizes in various competitions, the taxi driver said he was just a lucky man. He said:

I am just lucky and have become so popular for winning prizes almost every year since 2014. Some people have labelled me ‘juju man’ for having won so many times, actually, l have lost count of what l have won.

In 2014, Mandla won a cellphone worth US$100 from Coca-Cola as well as drinks and grocery hampers.
In 2015, Mandla won US$5 000 cash in a Delta Corporation competition, and also won a two plate full set gas stove through a cigarettes maker, Madison.
In 2015, he won various cash prizes in a Baker’s Inn promotion.
In 2016, he won ZW$5 000 in a competition in which his only son Clinton also won ZW$10 000 courtesy of TM Bargain Bonanza.
In 2017, he won ZW$10 000 in the Choppies Big Birthday Promotion and a fridge in the TM Bargain Bonanza.
In 2018, Mandla won a National Foods cash voucher, and a grand prize of a trip to South Africa but failed to go because he didn’t have a passport then.
In 2018 again, he won ZW$5 000 in the Choppies Big Birthday Bonanza and a television set.
In 2021, he won US$150 cash courtesy of a Mortein promotion and ZW $10 000 in a Jacobs promotion.
In 2022, Mandla won grocery vouchers worth US250 through Delta Corporation’s Castle Lager brand promotion.
Mandla is married to Rumbidzai, and the couple has a son, Clinton.
He is building a house in one of Chinhoyi’s high-density suburbs on a stand bought using proceeds from his many victories in competitions.
Mandla also has a taxi, which was also acquired using money gotten from his numerous lucky adventures.

Zimbabwean Serial Winner Wins A Funded Holiday Trip To Qatar World Cup

Former Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud scored France’s opening goal against Poland at the 2022 World Cup to become his nation’s all-time leading goalscorer.
Giroud, 36, has now scored 52 international goals in 116 appearances for France. The record was previously held by Thierry Henry, who scored 51 goals in 123 games.
Giroud had already scored twice in this tournament with his brace against Australia, which made his tally 51 goals – tied with fellow World Cup winner Henry. 
After the goals against the Socceroos, the 36-year-old forward said it means a lot to be alongside Thierry Henry as France’s top goalscorers. He told the media:

Personally, I feel blessed to have the opportunity to be next to Thierry now. It is an unbelievable feeling – and we couldn’t have hoped for a better start at the World Cup. But I aim to play football for as long as my body will allow me. I am a competitor. I am still very passionate and I still have all of my hunger. As long as I feel good I will do my best for the team to reach our target. I feel very good. Some of my friends have told me I’m like a fine wine.

At the last World Cup, Giroud played 546 minutes of football en route to France’s triumph without actually finding the net himself.
There was doubt over whether he would even make the squad for Qatar considering coach Didier Deschamps had left him out of his side for last summer’s European Championships.
However, a last-minute injury to Karim Benzema meant Giroud was reintegrated into the fold.

Croatia have progressed to the quarter-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup finals underway in Qatar after beating Japan 3 – 1 on penalties this Monday.
The match had ended 1 – 1 on regular time.
Both teams started the game with a lot of energy but as the minutes ticked by, Croatia began to control the game and dictate the pace, which was very slow. 
Perisic had Croatia’s best chance of the half but could not beat Gonda from close range following a mistake from Tomiyasu.
 Japan found some momentum at the end of the half and made it count after Maeda scored his first goal of the tournament. He reacted quickest to Yoshida’s knockdown to give Japan the lead in the 43rd minute. 
The only highlight in the second half was Perisic’s equaliser. 
Extra time was quiet and saw a lack of chances other than a deflected effort from Mitoma. 
Livakovic became the hero in the penalty shootout as he saved three of the four Japan penalties, with only Asano scoring. Pasalic scored the winning penalty with Croatia winning the shootout 3-1.
Croatia have progressed from all three of their appearances in the round of 16 at the World Cup, winning on penalties in each of the last two (also Denmark in 2018).
Croatia have won all three of their World Cup penalty shootouts (also vs Denmark and Russia in 2018), while the team going second has won the last seven penalty shootouts at the World Cup.
Japan have been eliminated from all four of their round of 16 appearances at the World Cup (D2 L2), while they’ve lost both of their penalty shootouts in the competition (also vs Paraguay in 2010).
Meanhile, Brazil play South Korea tonight in another Round of 16 match.
