High Court judge Justice Edith Mushore has ordered Zimbabwe Republic Police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga, Home Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe and Constable Rachid Siri to pay ZWL$4.3 million to the Choto family for the unlawful shooting of Kelvin Tinashe Choto in January 2019.
Choto, a young football player, was shot dead by a police officer near Makoni Shopping Centre in Chitungwiza in January 2019 during anti-government protests.
On Wednesday, 25 November 2020, Justice Mushore ruled that the Choto family is entitled to damages amounting to ZWL$4,3 million emanating from the shooting of the footballer.
The Choto family was represented by Fiona Iliff of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR).
In a post on their social media pages, the ZLHR said out of the ZWL$4.3 million, ZWL$2 million is compensation for loss of support for Kelvin’s minor child Anenyasha Janelle Choto while ZWL$2 million is for loss of support for the widow Varaidzo Chiyanike.
The other ZWL$168 000 is for nervous shock and trauma for Chiyanike while ZWL$168 000 is for nervous shock and trauma for Julius Choto, who is Kelvin’s father.
