The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has issued a list of beneficiaries of foreign currency under the central bank’s forex auction system.
In a statement, the RBZ said:
<blockquote>This statement is being issued in line with the Bank’s commitment to regularly keep the public informed on developments under the Foreign Exchange Auction System.
In terms of the foregoing, the 1334 beneficiaries of the Main Foreign Exchange Auction over the period June 2020 to April 2021 are listed hereunder for public information. A list of the 1744 beneficiaries of the SMEs Foreign Exchange Auction during the same period is also attached.</blockquote>

The Zimbabwe dollar has firmed slightly against the greenback on the Foreign Exchange Auction conducted today, 19 January 2021.
The weighted average this week fell marginally from ZWL$82.0914 last week to ZWL$82.0833 this week.
US$2.8 million was allocated to the Small to Medium enterprises forex auction while US$32.4 was allocated to the main forex auction.
In total, US$35.3 million was allotted this week, with the bulk of the allotment (US$15.5 million) going to raw materials.
228 bids were received on the Small to Medium enterprises forex auction, with 219 accepted and 9 disqualified. On the main forex auction, a total of 289 bids were received, 260 were accepted while 29 were disqualified.
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) said bids that were disqualified were not eligible in terms of the Priority List.
Bids with overdue CDIs, outstanding Bills of Entry (BOEs), and those with sufficient FCA balances were also disqualified.
Some bids were allotted on a pro-rata basis to conform with the Import Priority List, the RBZ said.

Forex Auction Results: Zimbabwe Dollar In Marginal Gain, Now ZWL$82.0833

Forex auction results for 21 December 2020 are in and the Zimbabwe dollar has marginally lost against the greenback.
The weighted average this week marginally went up from ZWL$81.7368 last week to ZWL$ 81.7688
US$1.67 million was awarded to Small to Medium enterprises forex auction while US$27.91 was awarded to the main forex auction.
In total, US$29.82 million was allotted this week the bulk of the allotment (US$13.3 million) going to raw materials.
129 bids were received on the Small to Medium enterprises forex auction, with 120 accepted and 9 disqualified. On the main forex auction, a total of 237 bids were received, 227 were accepted while 10 were disqualified.

Parliament says the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) must hold foreign currency auctions daily rather than weekly and ensure that the supply of foreign currency to the auction is not interrupted in order to maintain the stability of the Zimbabwe dollar.
In its 2020 mid-year monetary policy review released last week, Parliament also urged the central bank against interfering with the market mechanism and monetary indiscipline as this will result in the total collapse of the auction system. It said:
<blockquote>The RBZ (Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe) can increase the frequency of auctions per week after successfully getting it off the ground.
Lessons can be drawn from Angola, which started with weekly auctions and gradually gravitated to three times a week before increasing to daily auctions.
Effective implementation is key to success. Supply-side interventions are now critical to ensure uninterrupted forex supply.
The mistakes of 2004, where the auction system degenerated into an allocation system, should be avoided.</blockquote>
Over the last three weeks, the Zimbabwe dollar has marginally appreciated against the United States dollar to US$1:$81,71.
