Finance and Economic Development Minister Mthuli Ncube has said the establishment of the Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency (ZIDA) will enable the country to process foreign direct investment (FDI) approvals within a day.
Updating the nation on progress made in respect of measures being implemented to enhance the country’s economic performance, Ncube said ZIDA should be operational in the next few months.Said Ncube:
<blockquote>We are accelerating and deepening the ease and cost of doing business reforms to improve competitiveness. This includes the establishment of a one-stop shop investment centre, and legislation to establish a specific and dedicated institution – the Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency (ZIDA) — is now before Parliament. ZIDA is set to be fully operational in the coming months, and will enable the processing of investment approvals within a day, significantly improving the investment climate.</blockquote>

Zim Targets Processing Investment Approvals In Hours

Finance and Economic Development Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube yesterday said investors cannot invest in Zimbabwe if they cannot take their money out of the country.
He said this while addressing delegates at a “Road to Davos” townhall meeting held in Harare. Said Ncube:
<blockquote>The issue is shortage of forex with the corporates, the silver bullet is about currency reform, if we get that right the corporates can access foreign currency whenever they need it, the currency reform agenda is also impeding foreign investment, if investors cannot take their money out of the country then we cannot attract investors. A long term solution to the crisis is, currency reforms, currency reforms, and currency reforms; and ending arbitrage opportunities in the market, accepting the US dollar as the only legal tender is not currency reform, its submission. As a nation if we accept US dollar as our sole currency, then it means that we are afraid of currency reform and that’s capitulation.</blockquote>

Zim Cannot Attract Investment If Investors Cannot Take Their Money Out Of The Country- Mthuli Ncube

Speaking to The Herald on the side-lines of the inaugural Intra African Trade Fair here, Special Adviser to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister, Ambassador Stuart Comberbach said Zimbabwe has approved investment projects worth US$5,1 billion.
He said some of these projects will materialise in the early part of 2019. Said Comberbach:
<blockquote>What we cannot do at the moment is put value to the applications that are being assessed for approval but what I can confirm is that investment projects that have been approved have reached US$5,1 billion, so you should see some of these materialising in the early part of next year.</blockquote>

Zimbabwe Has Approved Investment Projects Worth US$5 Billion- Top Govt Official

Analysts have said that the $16 Billion investment commitments that President Emmerson Mnangagwa claims to have secured will take many years to come to Zimbabwe and that some of it may not come at all. Piers Pigou, a senior consultant at International Crisis Group said,
<blockquote>Calculation formulae are unknown and in the context of election hyperbole, it is not surprising they get talked up in this way. The reality is that this money has not come into the country and the vast bulk of it will not anytime soon, if at all. We have very little insight into these mega deals and the details thereof, so one hopes there will be greater transparency in terms of their component parts, the sequencing and timing of the various stages of the investments and the related costs and benefits. The figures bandied about on these mega deals need to be treated with considerable speculation.</blockquote>

Majority Of 16 Billion In Investment Commitments Will Not Be Coming Soon: Analysts

Japan’s ambassador to Zimbabwe, Toshiyuki Iwado has called on the government protect investments and to fix the foreign currency situation if it is to attract foreign direct investment. Speaking at the handover of classroom blocks, two teachers’ houses and furniture at Chemhondoro Secondary School Iwado said,
<blockquote>Sometimes our comments are very harsh, but that is the sense of friendship. If I avoid making harsh comments, I don’t think it’s sincere….Before leaving Tokyo, I met with Japanese business people and they have a couple of concerns. One of them is how Zimbabwe can protect their investments. The second is the currency issue. It is intermingled. I am a government official and I am okay with the slogans but unlike government officials, company people, business people are keen to know what action will be taken. It is okay that the politics have changed, the climate has changed and attitudes have changed. But for them this is not enough, they want to see more conducive circumstances because FDI (foreign direct investment) is not as simple as just buying shares… But it’s not enough I can say. Probably at the moment, I can say the biggest issue is that of foreign currency. Without enough reserves, how can foreign countries investing here be sure that their earnings would be secure?</blockquote>

Saying Zim Is Open For Business Is Not Enough, Forex Situation Must Be Fixed To Attract FDI: Japan

A delegation of German investors is in the country to seek business opportunities in energy saving projects as well as in Information Communication Technologies.
Last month, a delegation of Germany parliamentarians, was in the country for business investment opportunities. In an interview with NewZimbabwe.com in Harare, head of the private investment team, Jutta Peinze who is the marketing director for Sengled Europe, said they are studying the country’s tax regime with a “keen” interest in setting up businesses in Zimbabwe.
If satisfied with the business environment, Peinze said they have in mind some multi-million investment plans in energy saving digital projects. She said:
<blockquote>We have a wide range of products which we want to invent in Zimbabwe most of which promote the smart use of energy in homes, industries, private and public institutions also through the use of modern technologies. An example is the exciting project of energy-efficient LED with a wireless HD camera which can be used to light up homes, garden, garage or hallway and other industrial sites to enhance security.</blockquote>
