ZERA has dismissed social media reports that fuel prices have been hiked. Social media is awash with a picture that says Diesel is now priced at $24.79, Petrol at $23.97.

In dismissing the picture as fake, ZERA wrote a statement which reads in part:
<blockquote>ZERA would like to advise its stakeholders, and members of the public to disregard a fake fuel price increase notification being corculated on some sections of the social media.
Stakeholders are further advised that the fuel price reveiw notices from the official regulators bears an official ZERA Stamp.</blockquote>

ZERA Dismisses Social Media Fuel Price Hike Reports

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Energy_Regulatory_Authority">ZERA</a> last night posted the new fuel prices on their social media platforms. Diesel will retail at 19.55 while Petrol will retail at 18.28 as shown in the stamped official memo below.

Former Finance Minister, Tendai Biti who is also the opposition MDC Deputy President has projected that the Zimbabwean economic which is already unbearable cannot last for a period of six months.
His remarks come when the inflation hit country is facing severe starvation, has a huge deficit in power, fuel, water, and medicines. Posting on Twitter this Friday, Biti said:
<blockquote>The wheels have literally come off and the fan has hit the roof. There has basically been no power for the last 24 hours in many hoods including Harare s CBD. There has hardly been any drop of fuel in gas stations. Prices are at war in shops. This situation can’t last for 6 months.</blockquote>
The opposition MDC and some analysts attribute the country’s crisis to <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/05/03/mnangagwa-told-to-resolve-the-legitimacy-first/">President “Emmerson  Mnangagwa’s illegitimacy”</a> and <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/08/23/poor-governance-not-legitimacy-is-at-the-heart-of-our-crisis-former-wto-employee/">mismanagement of the country’s resources</a>.
On the other hand, the government and its sympathisers blame sanctions, “economic saboteurs” such as <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/10/18/weve-warned-them-enough-ed-speaks-on-errant-business/">“errant businesses”</a>, the <a href="https://twitter.com/matigary/status/1185208063780782080">opposition MDC “which is throwing spanners in the government’s way”</a> and natural disasters caused by climate change.

"This Situation Cannot Last 6 Months," Former Finance Minister

The government on Tuesday directed service stations to continue selling fuel at the current prices announced last week by the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA).
The prices announced by ZERA were as follows, RTGS $4.89 for diesel and RTGS $4.97 for petrol.
Reports indicate that on Tuesday, service stations that had fuel in Harare were no longer selling the product, anticipating another price hike.
Some service stations were reportedly selling fuel at prices as high as RTGS $8.00 per litre.
Speaking during a post-cabinet media briefing on Tuesday in the capital, recently-appointed Minister of Energy and Power Development, Fortune Chasi warned fuel dealers who were selling fuel exclusively in US dollars. Said Chasi:
<blockquote>It is unacceptable for fuel players to insist on US dollar payments only. That is not compliant with their licences. Remedial action will be taken.</blockquote>
The Minister for Information and Publicity, Monica Mutsvangwa said that ZERA will be going after fuel dealers who are in the habit of increasing fuel prices willy-nilly. She said:
<blockquote>Cabinet has resolved that it is unacceptable to sell fuel at as high as $7 per litre. Minister Chasi has met players and warned them that this behaviour is not acceptable and ZERA will be out in full force enforcing the law.</blockquote>
Writing on Microblogging site Twitter on Tuesday, Finance permanent secretary George Guvamatanga said:
<blockquote>The Government has NOT increased the price of fuel. While a review of prices was done, the decision is that the current prices should be maintained. ZERA will be issuing a detailed statement.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, ZERA issued a statement late on Tuesday evening directing fuel retailers to sell fuel at the prices announced last week. The statement reads:
<blockquote>The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) would like to advise the public and stakeholders that the current fuel prices of RTGS $4.89 and RTGS $4.97 for diesel and blend respectively shall continue to prevail.
The position takes into account the funding arrangements of importation of fuel through Letters of Credit (LCs) which were established at the exchange rate of RTGS $4.6125.</blockquote>
