The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority has fired eight (8) top managers, demoted two and suspended three while the other is serving three months’ notice pending dismissal over malpractices picked up in the forensic audit published last year.
The Herald reports that those that have been fired are:

<li>ZPC finance director Mr Hubert Chiwara,</li>
<li>ZETDC managing director Engineer Julian Chinembiri,</li>

<li>Zesa Enterprises (Zent) managing director Mr Tererai Mutasa,</li>
<li>Zent manager Tichivangana</li>
<li>Zent manager Dafana.</li>
<li>ZPC general manager Mr Washington Mareya who has been given three months notice.</li>

Suspended are:

<li>Zesa head corporate services Mr Rufaro Pasipanodya,</li>
<li>Zesa public relations manager Mr Fullard Gwasira and</li>
<li>Mr Obson Matunja from the audit department,</li>

</blockquote>
They were all suspended pending investigations into possible personal use of Zesa vehicles or a potential fuel coupon scam involving $18 000.
Last week, more officials including section engineer metering Engineer Leonard Chitsina, and Mr Freeman Chikonzo, senior manager Information and Technology were suspended pending investigations on a potential fraud involving a local electrical company.
More bosses could be fired once other disciplinary hearings have been concluded while several survivors are said to have been “strongly warned”.
Engineer Ralph Katsande who has been ZETDC acting managing director and commercial manager since 2018 has been demoted following the forensic audit and appearance before a disciplinary hearing where it was recommended that he should be demoted.
He is likely to assume the general manager’s post for the Southern Region.

FULL LIST: ZESA Fires Eight Top Managers Following Forensic Audit

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Electricity_Supply_Authority_Holdings" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">ZESA</a> Holdings spokesperson Fullard Gwasira said that two units at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Hwange_Power_Station" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Hwange Thermal Power Station</a> have been restored to service.
Gwasira however, did not reveal when the other unit will start functioning again. Writing on Twitter on Monday morning, he said:
<blockquote>Two Units have now been restored to service, thereby improving the power supply situation.</blockquote>
Earlier on Sunday, the Zimbabwe Electricity and Distribution Company (ZETDC) announced that it was implementing load shedding at Stage 2.
The power utility said that three Generator Units had tripped at Hwange Power Station in the early hours of the morning leading to a loss of 251MW from the National Grid.

Hwange Restores 2 Units, Load Shedding Expected To Ease

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Energy_Distribution_and_Transmission_Company" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe Transmission Distribution Company (ZETDC)</a> experienced technical glitches to its prepaid vending platform countrywide, inconveniencing its customers as a result. Writing on Twitter, ZESA Holdings public relations manager, Fullard Gwasira said:
<blockquote>ZETDC would like to advise its valued customers countrywide that it is experiencing system challenges with its prepaid vending system.
We thank you for bearing with us during this inconveniencing but temporary situation and we regret the inconveniences being caused.
In the meantime, customers can revert to our banking halls countrywide to purchase electricity tokens whilst the situation is being addressed. Customers will be advised on the progress of full service restoration.

ZESA Prepaid Vending System Crashes

The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), a subsidiary of ZESA Holdings has warned its defaulting customers that they will be disconnected.
In a statement, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Electricity_Supply_Authority_Holdings" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">ZESA</a> Public Relations Manager Fullard Gwasira said the power utility will cut off power supplies to defaulters who have not made an effort to clear their debts or make payment plans with ZESA. He said:
<blockquote>The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) would like to advise all defaulting customers who are on the post-paid system to settle their electricity bills without any further delay to avoid the inconvenience associated with power being disconnected.
In the interest of quality service provision, ZETDC is implementing its full complement of credit control measures to defaulters who did not make an effort to clear their debts or engage the power utility for payment plans.</blockquote>
Gwasira called upon consumers to settle their bills to enable ZESA to efficiently provide service as the funds will be used to import power, pay for coal for local generation, and buy spares for network maintenance, among other uses.

ZESA Threatens To Disconnect Defaulters

The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) spokesperson, Fullard Gwasira revealed that the power utility is able to supply power to most of its customers during the night. He said:
<blockquote>The electricity supply situation is quite dire. Please use the available power very sparingly. We are able to supply most of our customers with power mostly during the night.</blockquote>
Gwasira added that the power supply situation will stabilise in March/April 2020 if high rainfall is received in the oncoming rainy season. He said:
<blockquote>If we get a good rainfall season, the impact of that will be felt around March/April 2020.</blockquote>
The country is importing electricity from neighbouring countries which costs US$15 million per month, a situation that is unsustainable, claimed Gwasira. He said:
<blockquote>Imports currently cost us about 15m USD per month. Raising this figure or expecting to import indefinitely is not sustainable in the environment of the forex crunch. Let alone the security of supply issues.</blockquote>

ZESA To Supply Power To Households Only At Night

The power crisis in Zimbabwe could worsen after the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) revealed that power generation at Kariba Hydro Power Station is progressively dwindling.
In a statement, ZESA spokesperson, Fullard Gwasira disclosed that power generation at Kariba has fallen from a peak of 1 050MW to 360MW. He said:
<blockquote>Indeed we are getting power from Eskom up to 400MW. The major challenge is that the gap being left by Kariba is progressively getting bigger.
From 1050MW down to 360MW. It’s this difference in addition to plant breakdown which is driving load shedding.</blockquote>
Gwasira further revealed that load shedding is now at Stage 2 following a technical fault at Hwange Thermal Power Station. Said Gwasira:
<blockquote>Zesa is implementing stage 2 load shedding due to a technical fault at Hwange and the loss of one of the Stage 2 Units at 1700hrs. This lead to a loss of about 160MW. Load shedding hours and affected areas have extended beyond the publicized schedule.</blockquote>

Kariba Hydro Power Generation Falls From 1 050MW To 360MW

Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) spokesperson, Fullard Gwasira, on Wednesday disclosed that the power utility upgraded load shedding to Stage 2.
Gwasira said that the move was necessitated by a technical fault at the Hwange Thermal Power Station and the loss of one of the Stage 2 Units at 5 pm. He said:
<blockquote>Zesa is implementing stage 2 load shedding due to a technical fault at Hwange and the loss of one of the Stage 2 Units at 1700hrs. This led to a loss of about 160MW. Load shedding hours and affected areas have extended beyond the publicized schedule.</blockquote>
In response to a question on what Stage 2 Unit was, Gwasira explained how the Thermal Power Plant was built. He said:
<blockquote>Hwange power stage was built in stages. Stage 1 has 4 x120MW Units, stage 2 was built later and has 2 x220MW Units. Stage 3 is currently under construction and has 2 x 300MW units.</blockquote>
The country has been experiencing acute powers shortages since May, prompting the power utility to impose debilitating power cuts across the country.

ZESA Says Load Shedding Now At Stage 2

The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA), needs over US$40 million to replace more than 4 000 transformers, which have either been vandalised or have become obsolete across the country.
This was revealed by the power utility’s spokesperson, Fullard Gwasira. He also stated that over 1 000km of power lines have been destroyed by vandals.
Speaking to State media, Gwasira asserted that the mandatory prison term of 10 years for electricity infrastructure-related crimes is not enough. He said:
<blockquote>We need at least US$40 million to replace vandalised and obsolete transformers throughout the country.
However, this seems not deterrent enough as we continue losing a lot of equipment to thieves.
Out of over 4 000 transformers and 1 000km of our lines that we have lost, more than 70 per cent mislay is through vandalism and that is a cause of grave concern.
I, therefore, wish that the mandatory sentence be increased to at least 20 years.</blockquote>
Gwasira urged ZESA clients who are in debt to pay up to enable the company to cater for maintenance of its lines and transformers.

ZESA Requires US$40 Million For Transformers

The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) said that 160 MW of electricity will this week be added to the national grid following the successful refurbishment of Unit 5 at Hwange Power Station (HPS).
The addition of electricity from Unit 5 will take the total generation from HPS to 660MW.
This was revealed by ZESA spokesperson Mr Fullard Gwasira. He said:
<blockquote>Hwange Unit 5 is expected to be back in service during the course of this weekend and it will inject 160MW. Thus Hwange will generate an average of 500MW.
Unit 6, which has been out from March 2019 owing to the generator earth fault, requires up to £3,3 million to be fixed. The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe and the Ministry of Finance are making efforts to assist Zesa in raising this amount.</blockquote>
Gwasira, however, warned that generation at Kariba Power Station might be further reduced as the water level in Lake Kariba continues to recede. He said:
<blockquote>Owing to the drought experienced in the upstream of the Kariba reservoir, the lake levels are now about 27 per cent.
Kariba South Hydropower Station is expected to further reduce the plant’s current average output from 580MW to the recommended 358MW.
Failure to adhere to the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA)-recommended 358MW may result in the plant shutting down by October 2019.
This is a situation we have to avoid by taking the correct remedial action in line with the noble recommendations.</blockquote>

160 MW Be Added To The National Grid This Weekend

The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has blamed unemployed technicians for the rampant theft of copper cables and vandalism of other electricity infrastructure.
ZESA spokesperson Fullard Gwasira revealed that the power utility has already lost property worth US$2 million this year. He said:
<blockquote>Zesa property is vandalised. Last year only, we lost Zesa property worth US$4,2 million and this year so far, we have lost property worth US$2 million.
We have qualified electricians who are roaming the streets and are jobless, so you will find that those are the people who vandalise Zesa property because they have electrical experience.</blockquote>
While residents have blamed ZESA employees of vandalising electricity infrastructure, Gwasira was quick to absolve ZESA personnel. Said Gwasira:
<blockquote>We have never had any member of our staff being arrested for stealing or conniving with copper thieves, but I can tell you that people who steal Zesa property are financially stable people because they go to an extent of buying vehicles like ours.
Not only that, but they also brand them ZETDC. They even get themselves branded uniforms. In that way, they come and steal property during broad daylight as people will just think it’s Zesa people doing their job.</blockquote>
In Bulawayo’s Lochview and Sunninghill areas, residents have reportedly formed groups who take turns to guard copper cables in the areas to prevent blackouts.

ZESA Blames Unemployed Technicians For Vandalism Of Electricity Infrastructure

The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) said that the debilitating power cuts experienced over the weekend were caused by a sharp drop in total power generation to below one thousand megawatts on Friday resulting in Stage 2 load shedding.
The power utility has however assured its customers that the load shedding schedule has since been downgraded to Stage 1 whereby power is cut for “only” 8 hours rather than the 16 hours experienced over the weekend.
ZETDC also revealed that it will do everything its power to provide electricity so that soccer lovers will be able to watch the Africa Cup of Nations which start this Friday in Egypt. It said in response to a consumer:
<blockquote>Load shedding is not deliberate. Its a function of demand and supply. Every EFFORT will be applied to make sure that we get to watch AFCON. However, plant breakdown/ failure and huge demand may hamper that effort. Saving energy is paramount.</blockquote>
ZESA claims that power shortages are worsened by the fact that its power stations were built in the 1940s and the equipment is now too old causing it to break down constantly.

Load Shedding Has Been Downgraded To Stage 1 - ZETDC

ZESA public relations manager, Fullard Gwasira disclosed to State media that the power utility can no longer import adequate power from regional suppliers because of delays in payment for previous imports.
Gwasira said that ZESA owes South Africa’s Eskom and Mozambique’s Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB) a combined US$80 million.
He said that ZESA has to come up with a payment plan to enable it to get increased supplies. Said Gwasira:
<blockquote>We have always been importing but our imports are largely from those with excess, which is Eskom of South Africa and HCB from Mozambique but unfortunately these imports have to be paid and we have not been paying per manner that has pleased our suppliers so we are now owing them about US$80 million between the two of them.
So these suppliers are now not comfortable to give us power on credit because the debt keeps going up especially now that they are aware we have foreign currency challenges.
We need to raise some money so that we start paying and make a payment plan just like we do to our customers whereby we make them come up with a payment plan to clear their debts . . .</blockquote>
The county is in the throes of crippling power cuts with demand for electricity at its peak while generation from the country hydro-electricity power plant has fallen due to low water levels at Kariba Dam.

ZESA Owes ESKOM, Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa US$80 Million

The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) has advised the public that they should brace for power outages this rainy season as cables and poles are affected usually by falling trees.
Zesa Holdings spokesperson Mr Fullard Gwasira said:
<blockquote>During the rainy season owing to heavy downpours countrywide, trees usually fall on power cables or even poles fall down resulting in power outages.
The power utility further advises that due to the heightened number of electrical outages, some faults may take longer to restore than is normally the case.
We are encouraging our valued customers to report the location of fallen trees on power lines to their nearest Customer Service Centre in order to expedite the restoration of supplies.
In the interest of public safety, consumers must not attempt to repair faults or interfere with electricity infrastructure as that may lead to deaths or serious injuries.</blockquote>

ZESA Warns Of More Power Outages This Rainy Season, Power Cables Affected By Falling Trees

National power utility, the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) is said to be losing on average up to three transformers to theft and vandalism every night.
This was revealed by ZESA public relations manager Fullard Gwasira in an interview with NewZimbabwe.com on Sunday. Said Gwasira,
<blockquote>Our records confirm that as of August 2018, vandalism had cost the power authority a total of $4.5 million and, measured daily, at least three transformers are stolen every night.
It’s time such thefts are declared a national disaster because they continue to derail huge investments made to avail electricity in the country.</blockquote>
Gwasira denied allegations that some ZESA employees were responsible for the vandalism on ZESA infrastructure:
<blockquote>We do not have evidence that ZESA employees are involved and these allegations just come without the required accompanying evidence.
The power authority has an internal code of conduct which speaks against such issues.
Those levelling the allegations must recall that knowledge of electricity is not limited to ZESA alone as there are a lot of companies which have retrenched qualified technicians and engineers.</blockquote>
