A family Counsellor with Musasa Project, Sibongile Chidhakwa (55), is being accused by her estranged husband, Slyt Chidhakwa (65), of faking medical reports to ensure that he is imprisoned so that she could grab his property.
As reported by <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/who-will-counsel-family-counsellor-another-marriage-breaks-down-for-musasa-project-counsellor-estranged-husband-claims-she-faked-assault-medical-reports/">H-Metro</a>, the two are both divorcees and are now living separately as their four-year marriage teeters on the brink of collapse.
Slyt told H-Metro that Sibongile used her connections to fake medical reports and get him arrested with the sole intention of gaining sole possession of his property. He said:

I regret marrying Sibongile. I didn’t know that she was after my property.
We both came into this marriage with our own children and our own property.
We have no children together but Sibongile wanted to take all my property by sending me to prison.
She faked an assault and medical reports to get me arrested.
I slept in a police holding cell for two nights after she faked medical documents.
She was arrested for faking GBV, producing a fake medical report and stealing my valuables, including bank cards and trying to withdraw US$80 000.
She was arrested by Southerton police under CRB 2969/23 and 3044/23.
She connived with one of her brothers and took some of my property.
I question her integrity in counselling families when she fails to maintain her own marriage.

Sibongile, popularly known as Princess at Musasa Project, confirmed the differences between her and Slyt but declined to give more details. She said:

The issue is so sensitive that I need to sit down with you for details.
I also want one of my sons to be present since he is a lawyer.
I do not know where my husband is staying right now, maybe he disclosed his place to you.

Musasa Project is an organisation that focuses on promoting gender equality, and women’s rights, and combating gender-based violence.
It provides support services, advocacy, and empowerment programs for women and girls in Zimbabwe.

Musasa Project Family Counsellor Divorces, Again

Traditional and religious leaders have been challenged to play an active role in preventing Gender-Based Violence (GBV), such as child marriages.
Speaking on Sunday, 26 November during the national launch of the 16 Days of Activism against GBV at Hauna Growth Point in Mutasa District, Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Minister Monica Mutsvangwa, said those involved in child marriages should be exposed. She said:

As we mark the beginning of the commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, I want to appeal to our traditional leaders and religious leaders to play a pivotal role in the prevention of GBV and harmful practices.
As a society, we must be alert and expose such criminals who are robbing children of their future and ensure that they are brought before the law.
Our Constitution is very clear on who a child is and who can enter marriage, but despite that, we still have young girls who are taken into marriage where they are expected to assume adult roles as brides.

The Marriages Act Chapter 5:17 outlawed child marriages by setting the age of marriage at 18 and criminalising child marriages.
The minimum mandatory sentencing for convicted rape perpetrators has been set at 15 years.
The Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey of 2019 showed that 34 percent of girls in Zimbabwe are married before the age of 18,.5 percent are married before their 15th birthday and 2 percent of boys in Zimbabwe are married before their 18th birthday.
During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, Zimbabwe experienced a surge in teenage pregnancies and child marriages as a result of the prolonged closure of schools.

Traditional And Religious Leaders Challenged To Play Active Role In Preventing GBV

Pan African Parliament (PAP) president Chief Fortune Charumbira says they are committed to helping in the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Africa.
Charumbira made the comments after a South Africa-based pan-African anti-GBV lobby group Kwanele Foundation handed over a petition to PAP at its seat in Midrand.
Kwanele members peacefully marched near the PAP headquarters where they handed a petition to PAP’s fourth vice president Aango François Ndoutoume.
In the petition, which was handed over by Kwanele Foundation founder Sihle Sibisi, the organisation urged PAP to back its fight to end GBV on the African continent.
Kwanele demanded that PAP hosts a summit on combating GBV on the continent before the end of this year.
In response, Charumbira said PAP was concerned over the high prevalence of GBV on the continent and that the continental legislative body will support the fight to end the scourge. Charumbira said:

As PAP, we are sensitive and conscious of the fundamental issue of ending GBV, especially considering that cases of GBV remain rife across our continent.
The plight of women and the girl child is central to PAP’s agenda as we seek to propel Africa on the development trajectory.
Women and the girl child remain trapped in a cycle of poverty and exclusion in many spheres across Africa not least rights to equal opportunities and treatment in our society where cases of GBV are disproportionately high.

Ironically, last month Charumbira’s niece reported him to the police for allegedly sexually abusing her.
Charumbira was reported to the police in Masvingo for allegedly sexually abusing his 27-year-old married niece.
According to a leaked police memorandum, Charumbira allegedly sexually assaulted the complainant on two separate occasions.
He allegedly fondled the complainant’s breasts, kissed her without her consent, and groped her private parts.
The alleged assault took place at Rainbow Towers Hotel on 31 March this year and on 02 April at Crown Plaza Hotel, respectively.

Chief Charumbira Demands An End To Gender-Based Violence

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says it is committed to fighting all forms of Gender Based Violence (GBV).
Speaking on the sidelines of commemorations of 16 Days against GBV, Acting Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector, Fungai Ngawagare said:
<blockquote>
We cannot turn a blind eye to such an initiative (16 days) which is part of efforts in curbing crime.
In this regard, the Zimbabwe Republic Police is obliged to uphold the interests of children, women and men in the fight against all forms of Sexual Gender Based Violence.
Gender-Based Violence is violence involving men and women in which the female is usually the victim and is derived from unequal power relationships between men and women.
Violence is directed specifically against a woman because she is a woman, or affects women disproportionately.
It includes but is not limited to physical, sexual, and psychological harm. It includes that violence which is perpetuated or condoned by the state.

She said ZRP was working with organisations that protect the rights of vulnerable people in society which include Msasa, One Stop Centre, Childline, Family Support Trust and Social Welfare.
Every year from 25 November to 10 December, the ZRP women’s network joins the Southern Africa Region Police Chiefs Co-operation Organization (SARPCCO) in commemorating 16 days of activism against GBV.

Police in Bulawayo have advised women who are involved in romantic relationships with men but are in the habit of flirting or worse, with other men to delete their WhatsApp chats from their phones before they get home to avoid being beaten up or killed by their partners.
Police say a majority of reported gender-based violence cases emanate from intercepted social media messages – particularly on WhatsApp.
Addressing residents over a loud hailer as female police officers marched through Bulawayo CBD on Wednesday to mark 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, ZRP spokesperson in Bulawayo Province, Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, said:

Women, if you have side deals, if you’ve some miscellaneous that you’re doing on the phone just delete before you get home.
We know you’ve rights to your phone and you’ve protection under the law but when you get home and you’re now two, and you’re being asked who Jack is, you already have conflict.
Our view as police is that prevention is better than cure. You’ll come to the police to report, but already you have been assaulted, or worse.

Recently, a 32-year-old man from Old Pumula suburb in Bulawayo was ordered to pay a ZWL$18 000 fine or spend three months in prison for assaulting his wife after she refused to give him her phone password.
The man, Nkosilathi Ngwenya, assaulted his wife, Samukeliso Ncube (28), on 26 October after she refused to give him her phone password.

Police Advise Women To Delete WhatsApp Chats To Prevent Gender-based Violence

A man from Bulawayo is on the run after he allegedly assaulted his wife with a machete following a misunderstanding over a phone call during the wee hours of the morning.
Police in Bulawayo have confirmed the incident but did not give the names of the suspect and his victim.
ZRP spokesperson in Bulawayo Province said the complainant, who is 25 years old, received a phone call from her younger sister from Esigodini at around 1 AM on Monday.
The husband suspected that the call was from another man and started accusing his wife of infidelity and an altercation arose.
The man allegedly took his wife’s phone and smashed it on the wall, then went outside and came back holding a machete.
He used the weapon to strike the complainant several times resulting in her sustaining several cuts on different parts of her body.
The wife managed to flee and sought refuge at a neighbour’s house who then phoned the police and made a report.
The wife was taken to the hospital for treatment. Asst Insp Msebele said:

Police in Bulawayo have raised concern over increasing cases of gender-based violence in the city.
Female police officers under the banner ZRP Bulawayo Province Women Network on Tuesday held a march in the city centre under the theme, ‘All lives matter! End gender-based violence now’.
The march was held in partnership with organisations such as Family Support Trust, Contact Family Counselling Centre and Justice for Children Trust.
Speaking at the event, Acting Bulawayo police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele urged parents to protect their children following the raping of an 18-month-old baby recently. Said Asst Insp Msebele:

We are commemorating 16 days of activism against gender-based violence as we have noticed that we have these cases within us.
We have noticed that women wake up in the morning to go to the market and leave their children unattended.
The youngest case we have in Bulawayo is of a 1 year and six months who was raped, just imagine this, where was the mother of the child? It is our responsibility to protect these children.

Chairperson of the ZRP Bulawayo Province Women Network, Chief Superintendent Lethiwe Mhandu also implored parents and guardians to protect their children. She said:

We have seen children from the age of five up to even 12 years old, they are being raped by their fathers, male relatives and their neighbours.
It is our responsibility as parents to protect these children, they are vulnerable members of the community.
As police, we urge communities to monitor and know the whereabouts of their children and report all sexual offences within 72 hours so as to obtain post-exposure prophylaxis as it also helps the police to gather evidence.

Policewomen March Against Gender-based Violence

Songstress Nomalanga Tshuma (Noma T) speaking about her song Ngenzeni that seeks to raise awareness against gender-based violence narrated her days when she used to be beaten every day before her marriage collapsed.
Speaking to the publication about her Amapiano beats song Noma said:
<blockquote>I used to be a punching bag day in day out for no good reason. I used to be beaten and left for dead and endured years of both physical and emotional abuse and had to attend court cases with a deformed face.
Gender-based violence is alive it exists, domestically and professionally. A girl-child has to go through a lot of abuse just because of her gender. I used to live a life of tears on a daily basis during my marriage life, sleeping outside, being harassed and beaten but I overcame.
Women should know their rights, it’s not proper for one to stay in an abusive relationship. There is no profit in being abused, in the end you will die in a painful way. No matter how rich or influential or powerful the man is, being abused is no reason for one not to move away. In short, there is no relationship worth dying for.
August is women’s month and I urge society to be gentle and protective to mothers, sisters and daughters in our communities and also ask people to refrain from gender- based violence and any other form of abuse.</blockquote>

Women Affairs Minister Urges Men To Take Part In The 16 Days Of Activism Against GBV

Concern has been raised over an upsurge in the number of cases of gender-based violence (GBV). Most of the victims are young women who are attacked in public spaces such as bus termini, public parks and public transport. The main culprits were identified as touts, kombi drivers, and unemployed youths.
This was revealed by Plan International country director Tendai Musonza. Musonza told Parliamentarians in Harare on Wednesday that
<blockquote>In the past few weeks we have noted an upsurge of violence and fatal attacks in Harare targeting young women looking for transport, especially at night.
Plan International is concerned about the issue and we need to bring this to an end so that our women and girls are able to live in safety. This needs the cooperation of stakeholders like the corporate sector, legislators, and others so that we build safe and inclusive cities for adolescent girls.
Sexual harassment was rated as a major form of GBV in public spaces (43%), and the major victims (34%) are young women aged 18 to 35 years, followed by girls aged 18 and below and young adult men that are under 18 years and below.</blockquote>
