The family of George Chigova, who died at the age of 32 on 15 November 2023 at his home in South Africa, has castigated the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), for allegedly failing to honour the former Dynamos and Warriors goalkeeper, reported <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/jojola-laid-to-rest/">The Herald</a>.
Chigova died from a suspected heart ailment and left behind widow Nokuthula Mangena and three daughters Nicole, Tino and Tanatswa.
He was buried on 24 November 2023 at Chivhu Cemetery, right next to his father and mother’s graves in Chikomba District, Mashonaland East Province.
Chigova had 32 national team caps and was part of the Warriors squad at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals hosted by Egypt. He also won the COSAFA Cup in 2017 and 2018.
Speaking at the late footballer’s funeral, family spokesperson, Lazarus Chigova, said that ZIFA did not do enough to show respect to Chigova’s contributions to the sport. He said:

We have always been playing football here in Chivhu but no one talks about that. It’s probably because it’s a small area but we are all here in Chivhu today for George, a boy from Chivhu who became a national team player.
We all agree he was a very good goalkeeper. He saved penalties and was a specialist in that area.
I want to say thank you to ZIFA for the small way you assisted us. We were looking forward to something significant from you, to be honest with you.
But you did not give us our respect, I don’t know why. Is it because we are Chivhu? But we have shown you one thing that as Chivhu we can do it.

Chigova’s widow, Nokuthula was emotional when delivering her last speech.
She said it was difficult to bury her husband so early and to take care of their three daughters alone. Said Nokuthula:

First of all, I would like to thank you all for the support you have given to the family from the start of this ordeal…
I also look at Dynamos and the whole Zimbabwe family, our friends, our families your love keeps us going.
I’m sure George is smiling wherever he is. You have shown him love but may you also do the same to those who have remained behind.
Don’t wait to show them love when they are gone. Give them flowers whilst they are still alive.
That’s all that George needed when he was still alive; your love, your support.

Chigova was a product of the Aces Youth Soccer Academy before playing for the Gunners Football Club in 2010 and 2011.
He then joined Dynamos Football Club where he won two league titles and a pair of Mbada Diamond Cup titles.
In 2014, Chigova joined South African club SuperSport United and stayed there for one season before joining Polokwane City Football Club where he featured in over 100 games for the club.
He sealed a move to Polokwane City on an initial three-year contract which was later extended by a further two years.
After Polokwane City was relegated, Chigova rejoined Supersport in 2020 and made his debut in their 0-1 loss to Golden Arrows on 21 April 2022 at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.
At the time of his death, Chigova was not attached to any club after he officially left SuperSport United in June 2023 due to health complications.

George Chigova's Family Castigates ZIFA

Former Warriors star <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Khama_Billiat">Khama Billiat</a> broke down in tears as he gave an emotional speech at the funeral service for his friend and ex-national teammate <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/George_Chigova">George Chigova</a> at Rufaro Stadium in Harare on Thursday.
Chigova, who played for Dynamos before continuing his career at South African clubs, died in his sleep at his home in the neighbouring country last week due to heart complications, reported <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/sport/article/200019953/when-billiat-broke-down">NewsDay</a>.
The former SuperSport United goalkeeper, who died at the age of 32, left behind wife Noku and three daughters.
Chigova’s body was flown into the country on Wednesday morning. Hundreds of people, including family members, relatives, former and current players, and other football officials were at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport to welcome the body.
Billiat who was Chigova’s close friend, having started their careers together at Aces Youth Academy when they were kids, was part of the crowd at Rufaro Stadium.
Billiat struggled with his emotions as he paid tribute to “Jojola” as Chigova was affectionately called by his teammates and football fans. He said:

I don’t have many words, but just to say rest in peace, George. I never thought that I would give a speech at George’s funeral… that I would bury George. Rest easy George and you must know that we will love you until we meet again.
</blockquote>
Supporters, family, friends, Chigova’s former colleagues, officials from Dynamos, Footballers Union of Zimbabwe, ZIFA and the Premier Soccer League (PSL) were at the stadium, where Chigova made his name before moving to South Africa, to pay their last respects.
Aces Youth Academy director Nigel Munyati described Chigova as “a gentle giant”.
Other speakers included former Warriors team manager Wellington Mpandare, Premier Soccer League CEO Kenny Ndebele, Footballers Union of Zimbabwe and Dynamos chief executive officer Jonathan Mashingaidze, and ZIFA Normalisation Committee member Rosemary Mugadza.
Chigova played for big clubs such as Dynamos, SuperSport United and Polokwane City.
He helped the Warriors win the COSAFA Cup in 2018 and was voted the best goalkeeper of the tournament.
He was also the Warriors’ first-choice keeper at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Egypt.
The “gentle giant” was set to be laid to rest this Friday in Chivhu, Mashonaland East Province.

"I Never Thought I Will Give A Speech At George's Funeral", Billiat Pays Tribute To Chigova

SuperSport United Football Club has expressed condolences to the family and friends of the late former Dynamos and Warriors goalkeeper George Chigova.
Chigova passed away on Wednesday, 15 November, after battling a heart ailment over the past several months.
In a statement released this Wednesday, SuperSport United also clarified that Chigova’s second stint at the club officially ended in June this year.
Reports suggest Chigova was diagnosed with a heart disease earlier this year which could have informed SuperSport United’s decision not to renew his contract and sign another Zimbabwean goalkeeper, Washington Arubi.
A statement released by Supersport United this Wednesday reads:

It is with great sadness that we have learnt of the passing of former SuperSport United player, George Chigova.
George had two stints with the club, having joined us in 2014 from Dynamos in Zimbabwe.
He rejoined SuperSport in 2020 after having played for Polokwane City from 2015.
While he just started seven games for the club, he formed a great backup and training partner for the likes of Ronwen Williams, Ricardo Goss and Boalefa Pule. 
He also represented his country, Zimbabwe, making 32 appearances.
George was a great club man, a gentle giant loved by current and former players and everyone at the club.
Even though his official time with SuperSport United ended in June 2023, he was a regular visitor to the training ground and stadium to support the team.
We convey our deepest condolences to his family and friends both in South Africa and Zimbabwe during this difficult and very sad time.
May his soul rest in peace.

SuperSport United Mourns George Chigova

SuperSport United and Warriors goalkeeper George Chigova has died.
Chigova reportedly collapsed and died at his home in South Africa where he was based.
Chigova was reported to have been diagnosed with a heart disease earlier this year.
In July this year, <a href="https://www.idiskitimes.co.za/local/chigova-unlikely-to-play-football-again-hunt-paints-dark-spell/">iDiskiTimes</a> reported that Chigova’s football career was hanging in the balance.
SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt was quoted as saying Chigova’s situation wasn’t looking positive at the time. He said:
<blockquote>
I have not been briefed on the diagnosis or the whole thing, I’m not a doctor.
But I know that there is a problem that we are attending to at this point in time and we will know in the next week or so.
He’s going to spend four weeks just being inactive and go from there.
But it doesn’t look positive, but we will give him all the support we can and stay behind him as best we can.

Chigova’s situation forced SuperSport to re-sign veteran goalie Washington Arubi for a second time in his career.

Warriors Goalkeeper, George Chigova, Dies

South African-based Warriors players Onismor Bhasera and George Chigova have implored the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) to consider the futures of young Zimbabwean footballers and ensure that the FIFA ban on the country is lifted.
FIFA suspended Zimbabwe from international football over a year ago after the SRC, a government body, suspended the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) board on allegations of corruption, mismanagement of funds, and sexual harassment.
FIFA says SRC should reinstate the Felton Kamambo-led ZIFA board for Zimbabwe to participate in international football tournaments again.
Speaking in an interview with FARPost, Bhasera, who plays for SuperSport United, said football authorities seem not to care about the future of Zimbabwean footballers. Said Bhasera:

I’ve been following the events back home. It’s unfortunate that no one is considering the future of these footballers.
Some of us already made the break, but there are many still waiting for that breakthrough. Those ones have mainly been disadvantaged by the suspension.
We have been deprived at the continental and regional levels. It’s unfortunate that even player movements have slowed down since these events.
It’s the players that have suffered the most while the high offices are in an argument.
We can only wait for common ground to be reached for the sake of progress.
For the sake of our future, there must be an amicable resolution. We can’t remain stagnant in one position like this. Like other nations, we must progress.

Goalkeeper George Chigova, who also plays for SuperSport United, contends that Zimbabwe’s suspension by FIFA means that local footballers have no international platform on which to showcase their talents. Said Chigova:

I got an opportunity to play in South Africa after impressing during the 2013 Chan finals.
So, with the country suspended, it means no one is in a position to showcase themselves.
Many of us here in South Africa came via these tournaments. It’s the only possible breakthrough that footballers back home are waiting for.
Unfortunately, under these circumstances. It’s very hard to get such opportunities.
The future of Zimbabwean football is seriously under threat.

Warriors Duo Urge SRC And ZIFA To Let "Let Bygones Be Bygones"

Warriors goalminder, George Chigova was this Thursday officially unveiled at South African top-flight side Supersport following his move from relegated Polokwane City.
The former Dynamos keeper is among four players who were officially unveiled by Matsantsantsa this Thursday ahead of the new campaign in the South African topflight.
The Zimbabwean international is returning to Supersport after he was part of the team in the 2014/15 season before joining Polokwane City where he played just under 150 PSL games in his five-year spell at the club.
Supersport United have been quiet on the market, but have made their intentions clear, with the four new players who will bolster head coach and Zimbabwean Kaitano Tembo’s first-team options.
Among the unveiled new faces are former Bidvest Wits prospects Mpho Mathebula and Keanan Phillips, who starred in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge over the past two seasons before first-team breakthroughs under former coach Gavin Hunt.
Matsantsantsa finished 5th of the ABSA premier league table nine points behind winners, Mamelodi Sundowns.

George Chigova Finds New Club

Zimbabwean international goalkeeper George Chigova has announced his departure from South African club Polokwane City.
In a statement on Instagram, Chigova expressed his gratitude to the club’s chairman, Mogaladi and his former teammates for the five years he spent at the club. He wrote:
<blockquote>I would like to thank the Chairman of Polokwane City Football Club Mr Mogaladi for giving me an opportunity to be part of his team. I will forever be grateful thank you so much.
To all the coaches, technical team members, my fellow teammates, not forgetting our beloved supporters thank you so much, you guys pushed me and helped me to be a better player for that I will forever be grateful.  After 5 years, my time at the club has come to an end. Thank you for taking me in as 1 of your own.

Chigova will reportedly join Supersport United, under the stewardship of fellow countryman, Warriors legend Kaitano Tembo, next season.

Warriors Goalkeeper, George Chigova Leaves Polokwane City

Zimbabwe international goalkeeper George Chigova is set to play his 100th game in the South African Premier Soccer League.
The 28-year old has so far played 99 games. He is likely to reach 100 if he is selected to play against Black Leopards in the Limpopo derby on Sunday.
Speaking to Limpopo Sports Zone, Chigova said:
<blockquote>It’s good to be playing my 100th game. It’s been a long journey but I would like to thank the Almighty for giving me the strength all the time and to be able to reach this milestone.
So for now I cannot say I am happy, all I am happy for is that I am reaching 100 games. It’s not everyone who will be able to get there so for now let me just enjoy the moment.</blockquote>
Chigova joined Absa Premiership in 2014 with SuperSport. He is now in his fourth season in the Supa Disk. He has 30 clean sheets. He, however, conceded 119 goals.
His incredible form in the past few seasons effected his a national team bounce back.

Chigova To Play His 100th Game In ABSA

President Emmerson Mnangagwa praised Warriors goalkeeper George Chigova for completing five successive penalty saves in two shootouts at the new Peter Mokaba Stadium in South Africa propelling the national men’s soccer team to their second consecutive Cosafa Cup final.
On Wednesday Chigova made two straight saves in their 3-1 win over Lesotho in a penalty shootout after the two sides drew 0-0 in 90 minutes of the semi-final. This was three days after stopping three straight penalties in the first shootout in Sunday’s quarter-final against Botswana. Writing on Twitter, Mnangagwa said there was no doubt that Chigova is currently “the safest hands” the country has. Said Mnangagwa:
<blockquote>As we currently debate which candidate has the safest hands for Zimbabwe, we can all agree the answer is without a doubt George Chigova, the Warriors’ heroic goalkeeper who has saved five penalties this week to get the Warriors into the Cosafa Cup final.</blockquote>
Mnangagwa also congratulated the Mighty Warriors for beating Zambia 1-0 in the first-leg of the final qualifying round of the Africa Women Cup of Nations played at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka on Wednesday.
