Renowned economist, Godfrey Kanyenze, said disunity among the country’s opposition political parties enabled President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ascendancy and left some western embassies with no option but to support him.
This was revealed in the economist’s latest book titled, “Leaving So Many Behind: The Link between Politics and the Economy.”
Kanyenze said Zimbabwe’s opposition movement has made some decisions that have separated it from its founding social base. Says the book in part:

A major development that signified the separation of the MDC-T from its social base was the decision by the National Constitutional Assembly, which had been part of the vibrant social movement of the late 1990s and played a role in the formation of the MDC, to transform itself into a political party on 28 September 2013.
Meanwhile, the post-election self-introspection within the main opposition party MDC-T created disunity within the party.
</blockquote>
The manuscript also mentions former Energy Minister Elton Mangoma’s advice to then MDC-T president Morgan Tsvangirai to step down and facilitate leadership renewal and his assault by party activists and eventual expulsion also weakened the opposition.
Then MDC-T Secretary General Tendai Biti condemned these developments and expressed his support for the issues raised by Mangoma.
Mangoma and Biti’s departure from MDC-T further weakened the party, and Kanyenze noted that the splinter groups which left MDC-T continued to be fragmented along the way. The book says:

By the time the 2018 elections were convened, Zimbabwe Elections Commission (ZEC) confirmed the existence of 75 political parties contesting elections up from 35, a scenario that reflects a fragmented opposition.
Given the developments in the opposition parties, some western embassies were quite happy to work with the opposing factions in the ruling party.
The thinking that then-vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa, working with the opposition and civil society, offered the best prospects for a stable transition out of the economic crisis was propagated by the influential British think-tank, Chatham House in its report entitled; ’The Domestic and External Implications of Zimbabwe’s Economic Reform and Re-engagement Agenda’, released in September 2016.
… While the report observed that Mnangagwa was not widely popular and had a difficult legacy associated with Gukurahundi, he however was considered as having strong liberation war credentials and had forged close links with the military and the War Veterans, who were now at loggerheads with their patron Mugabe.

Prominent Economist Blames Opposition Disunity For Enabling Mnangagwa's Rise

Economists have urged the government to swiftly apply holistic and long-term solutions to the currency crisis or risk have a recurrent issue.
Persistence Gwanyanya, Godfrey Kanyenze, John Robertson and Prosper Chitambara told New Zimbabwe in separate interviews that temporary solutions were not the panacea to the country’s woes.
Gwanyaynya observed that the move to <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/full-text-rbz-freezes-sakunda-access-finance-croco-motors-accounts/">freeze bank accounts of companies, including Sakunda Holdings</a>, alleged to have been involved in money laundering was not sustainable in the long run. He called for permanent solutions and ditching of the current short-term stopgap measures.
Kanyenze observed that since 2017, president Mnangagwa’s administration has been responsive rather than proactive. He observed that the government has, at an unhurried pace, also been implementing ill-planned and insufficient solutions.
Prosper Chitambara observed that the issues were entrenched in the social and economic set up of the country. He said:
<blockquote>When 95 % of the economy is informalised, it means that speculation and indiscipline is rife. There are a lot of underhand dealings in such a context and unless such problematic situation are addressed, government can never win the exchange rates war. Key economic fundamentals created through social dialogue must be urgently resolved in order to permanently solve the problems.</blockquote>
Robertson also queried why it had taken the government forever to deal with known culprits of money laundering.
Following the RBZ move to freeze bank accounts in question, <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/black-market-exchange-rates-slows-down-the-herald/">exchange rates tumbled. </a>
The scarcity of foreign currency worsened <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zim-dollar-tumble-a-result-of-the-end-of-tobacco-season-rbz/">when the tobacco market season came to an end.</a> With the local industry in a parlous state, demand for foreign currency will continue to soar.

"Until Then, Govt Can Never Win The Exchange Rates War" ECONOMISTS

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has denounced Zimbabwe’s austerity measures as they hurt the workers and the poor.
Speaking at a Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) organised workers day rally on May 1, Hopolang Phororo, ILO Zimbabwe country director said that austerity measures have poor results everywhere they were implemented. Phororo said:
<blockquote>As the ILO, we take note of the lessons learnt from other countries following the global recession of 2009.
The evidence is clear that austerity hurts the workers and the poor. Cutting back on workers’ rights and protectionism does not stimulate economic growth. We are convinced that through dialogue, workers, employers and government can chart a better, just and inclusive path towards economic growth and development.</blockquote>
She also observed that the Zimbabwean situation had deteriorated since last year. The ILO boss said that working conditions continue to deteriorate whilst workers’ salaries remain stagnant.
Her sentiments are in resonance with those of Godfrey Kanyenze who viewed the “recovering economy” rhetoric as a fantasy. Kanyenze recalled and likened the Economic Structural Adjustment Programme (ESAP) era to the current crisis.
