A 33-year-old gold panner, Tafadzwa Nkonde, has been arrested for allegedly raping a woman in Chinhoyi and forcing her to drink poison after she rejected his sexual advances.
Nkonde appeared before the Chinhoyi Magistrates Court on Thursday, facing murder charges under Section 47 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act Chapter 9:23.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the incident occurred on August 30, 2024, when Nkonde approached the now-deceased Nokuthula Mazivisa as she was walking to her garden in the Dandadale area of Chinhoyi. He allegedly offered her US$5.00 for sexual services. Said the NPA:

The now-deceased refused to entertain the accused person, which did not go down well with him. He grabbed the now deceased’s neck from behind and dragged her into the bushes where he raped her once.
After raping the now-deceased, he took a bottle of pesticide that was in the complainant’s handbag and shoved the contents down her throat. He disappeared into a nearby bush.
Passersby heard the now-deceased groaning and went to investigate. The accused person reappeared on the scene and was positively identified by the now-deceased who narrated her ordeal to the witnesses.
The now deceased was rushed to hospital where she died upon admission.

The Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court remanded Nkonde in custody to the 18th of September 2024.

An illegal gold miner drowned in Mutare River while fleeing from police officers on Wednesday.
The now-deceased Tinashe Dukuta, 26, was in the company of two unidentified friends while panning for gold along Mutare River when police pounced on them.
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Manicaland_Province" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Manicaland province</a> deputy police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda confirmed the tragic incident. He said:
<blockquote>Police conducted a raid and the deceased and his friends escaped. They jumped into the river as an escape route.</blockquote>
The body was found floating in the river by one Byron Makunde, 17, of Premier Central, Penhalonga who had gone to install his water pump on Thursday morning.
He made a report at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Penhalonga" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Penhalonga</a> police station who attended the scene and ferried the body to <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mutare_Provincial_Hospital" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mutare Provincial Hospital</a> for a postmortem.

The parents of 21-year old Brian Bushe who was allegedly murdered by his fellow gold panners reportedly dumped his body at one of the suspect’s homes demanding 40 cattle. The parents only buried Brian, after one of the suspects gave them 7 cattle. The families of the suspects and Brian’s family are engaged in negotiations over how the balance of 33 cattle will be paid.
The suspects, Bothwell Moyo, 30, Omega Ziwa, 20, Godknows Sibanda, 22, Munashe Mtetwa, 22, and Alpha Shava, 21, all from Sikandiwa village in Mazvihwa, allegedly hacked Bushe to death with machetes at Sabi Gold Mine.
